Try booting the MBP with the OPTION+D keys. It may work.
If you had the original install DVDs, you would not have this problem. Duplicates can be obtained from Apple Customer service.
Ciao.

Same here. MacBook Pro mid-2010. Having problems since Yosemite install a month or two ago. Nothing happens when I try to boot holding down the d key. The system just sits until I release the d key, at which time it reboots in normal mode. Option-d causes the error everyone else is getting here.

To use the internet for the apple hardware test, your Mac had to ship with at least Lion. Otherwise you have to have the install dvd that came with the Mac. Not a retail version, but the machine specific software. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

This is straight from someone at Apple, «That -3403D code actually means there was an issue with your Mac software configuration«
Feb 4, 2016 10:29 PM in response to Mammadmo
To all that get that code. It means your Mac cannot do the hardware test from the internet. You need the install disk that has the hardware test on it. Then you boot it and hold down D or Command D at startup.

my ginger’s solution is what worked for me. I can’t do internet recovery on my mac—it’s a bit too old. I used the dvd that came with the mac and that worked fine. Showed no hardware errors, but worked. The overall problem I was having was with the video card. Got that replaced and I’m back in business.

I first also had trouble. Funny thing was that with the power connected the led in the connector near the laptop was not green or range but not doing anything. Then I disconnected the connector to the white square block (with power still connected) and the led was again green. Very strange! Then the laptop booted and I could do the restore process (Created bootable El Capitan USB / Installed fresh version of El Capitan / Restored data with Time Machine ).

While this may be true, it is odd that the machine appears to attempt to load the hardware test (it goes through all the correct motions before bringing us to the -3404D error). Further, why not simply give a message like, «Sorry, hardware test via the internet is not supported on this Mac,» rather than some unhelpful, cryptic message?
Finally, determining if your computer supports loading Apple Hardware Diagnostics over the internet isn’t necessarily easy to do using the info from Apple. Quoted from their webpage, «Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion and later support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.«
Some? How helpful is that? Why don’t we throw in «may» and «possibly» and how about «we don’t really know» for good measure.
I have an early 2011 MBP 13 that does do the AHT over the internet, and a Mid 2010 that doesn’t, so for the 13s that appears to be the cutoff. How hard was that, Apple? FFS

2010 and older Mac’s that run Snow Leopard or older. Have to use the install disk for AHT. Some 2011 or newer with a smc and efi update can run the online diagnostics. Usually the update is part of a software update. If you have the original install disks, you don’t need internet diagnostics. This is because after Snow Leopard, all operating systems came by way of a download from apple, if not preinstalled. The reinstall and the utilities is on line. The early 2011 that came with Snow Leopard generally can’t use the online diagnostics. As a general rule. If your computer came with Lion or newer, you use the online diagnostics.

HI, I do have the original install disks for my iMac 27-mid 2010 but even so always get the same error message mentioned on this thread (3403D) when I try to run the ADT.

I have it too. Using an old (around 2010) and now problematic iMac.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
I think in my case, and maybe yours too, this paragraph pertains:
If you’re using OS X Lion v10.7 or earlier and you can’t get AHT to start, see if you have an OS X installation disc named “Applications Install Disc 2.” Insert the disc in your internal optical drive or external Apple SuperDrive before following the steps above. Or, if you’re using a MacBook Air (Late 2010), plug the MacBook Air Software Reinstall thumb drive into your USB port instead.
The problem with my iMac is that the internal optical drive broke very early after purchasing this iMac. Actually it broke in (or around) an earthquake back in 2011 It just won’t swallow any optical disc since.

Question: Q: Error code -3403D on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
This thing has been a terrific workhorse for nearly 7 years. Only thing I’ve had done was a new power supply in 2013 and had the hard drive replaced in an apple authorised store last year.
It’s not starting up, it gets nearly through the startup bar on the apple screen then comes up with the grey screen then restarts.
I have run disk first aid via firewire on my imac 27 and it says the hard drive is fine.
So I tried to run AHT but it won’t run off the cd. Tried to run it from the internet (Command D) but again no luck — except this time it gave me that error message -3403D. Does anybody know what it means? And what I should do about it — and about it not starting?
MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

Not sure, if you have done a NVRAM/PRAM reset or SMC reset give it a try and see if it makes a difference.
Also just to make sure the you have to press only «Option» key while booting from USB drive.

Thanks for sharing that. Unfortunately I’ve already tried that option too. I am trying to get AHT to run from cd but it just automatically connects to apple.com/support when pressing D or option D on startup. Is there any other way of running AHT from the cd at all?

Try booting into Safe Mode:
Is Filevault enabled on this laptop?
Jul 15, 2020 10:47 AM
After having tried the safe mode, it just hangs on the apple screen when the bar is loading.
I am not sure if Filevault is enabled. I think I probably wouldn’t have done this. Is there any way of disabling it on startup?
Jul 15, 2020 3:19 PM
When you boot the computer do you get the login prompt right away or do you have a progress bar before you see the login prompt? The reason I’m asking about Filevault is I’ve encountered an issue with missing user accounts and if a user account goes «missing» and Filevault is enabled, then you get the non-stop reboots when the progress bar gets near 100%.
Check the health of the hard drive. I don’t know if you can do this over Firewire, but you can try running DriveDx to see it can access the health information on the drive. Post the complete DriveDx report here using the «Additional Text» icon which looks like a piece of paper.
If you cannot access the drive’s health information over Firewire, then create a Knoppix Linux USB drive using Etcher (Mac/Windows/Linux). Option Boot the Knoppix USB drive and select the orange icon labeled «EFI». While Knoppix is booting the computer may appear frozen on the boot picker menu so give Knoppix lots of time to finish booting.
At the Knoppix desktop click on the «Start» menu icon on the lower left corner of the Taskbar and navigate the menus to «System Tools —> GSmartControl». Within the GSmartControl app double-click on the drive’s icon to access the drive’s health information. Post the complete health report here. GSmartControl also allows you to run the drive’s internal self diagnostics.
Another advantage to booting Knoppix is it can give you an idea if the hardware on the laptop is actually working.

I experience frequent crashes with » GPUPanic.cpp:127 » in the crash log. There is a problem related to switching between the internal Intel graphics and the Nvidia graphics. I have spoken to the local Apple retailer, which will repair the computer free of charge soon.
I do not know, however, whether this issue is related to the -340D error.

Your Macbook Pro came with OS X 10.6.x and to run Apple Hardware Test you can use bundled with your Macbook Pro Application Disc:
Your Macbook Pro probably was upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery as some of the Mac which came with 10.6.x did have that option. It seems like, some of the models might have problem to access Internet AHT:
Not sure what error -340D means but if you haven’t tried yet, i would suggest to turn OFF your router and after 2-3 mins turn ON again. Try with different network as very often issues with starting Mac in Internet Recovery are caused by network settings. This could be the same issue.

A User collected the ones Apple left out in the open and put them on a GitHub web site, along with instructions for making a stand-alone USB-stick (execute-only). Installation back in «the right place» on your boot drive is very complex, and too much trouble.

what model MacBook Pro?
older Macs, before about June 2013 do not use «Apple Diagnostics» so when you try to get the diagnostic via Internet Recovery, it cannot be found and you get an error.
On your older Mac, the Apple Hardware Test will be found on the original-Installer DVD. If you need help finding a copy on the Internet, please post back.

Do you see an image of a globe with a triangle containing an exclamation point?
That means it’s trying to either access MacOS Recovery or Apple Diagnostics through the internet and can’t connect. That would be a sign that the tool you’re trying to access is not present or is damaged on your drive.
Aug 15, 2019 8:43 AM
Hi, thank you for your quick response. my MacBook Pro is a mid 2010 unit so I’m guessing I don’t have the diagnostics tool!
Not it sure if I can remember where the install disc is, is there a copy on the net?
thank you once again!

In Internet Recovery, these low negative thousands error messages indicate that your provided Wi-Fi Network is inadequate in some fashion, and cannot be used (for this purpose) in its current state.
Common problems include:
required use of a proxy server to get Internet access
required use of a login page to get Internet access
Use of a login server or certificate to get Internet access
Use of PPPoE in the Mac to get Internet access (typically only applies to DSL)
Use of Fixed IP address rather than good old DHCP
Variance of the time by more than five minutes
Failure of Router to provide workable DNS server addresses, or providing 0.0.0.0 [may produce -2002f]
If you have an Ethernet port, you may in some cases be able to move your Mac close to the Router and connect to the Router using Ethernet.
The higher the number, the more obscure the problem.
Also, make certain the Date&Time and Time Zone are correct within 5 minutes.

Hi,
I’m currently trying to run an apple hardware test on a mid 2010 21.5″ iMac running osX Mavericks as the iMac is running very slowly so I suspect a HDD failure is imminent.. Upon pressing (option + D) on start-up i’m greated by the image of a globe with it trying to connect and download. then being displayed with the error code -3403d. I have already searched the forums for this error and no one has gotten a reply, so I thought i’d start a new thread and get it to the top of list. I have made sure i am connected to my network, i am using an ethernet cable to do this. I can boot into recovery mode with (command + option + R). I have tried running first aid on both the HDD itself and the partition that MacOS is installed on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think that error code means that AHT can’t be located. You need to run AHT from the 10.6 Applications Install Disc 2 that came with your iMac.
Here are some instructions:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Here are some step from the above link:
Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X v10.7 and earlier:
1. To start AHT on these computers make sure the Applications Install Disc 2 is inserted into the built-in optical drive
2. Shut down your computer. Then, press the power button to turn it back on.
3. Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears.
4. It takes a minute or so for AHT to start up and inspect your hardware configuration.
5. When the process is complete, select your language and click the right arrow. If you aren’t using a mouse, you can use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
6. The AHT console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the «T» key or the Return key.
To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the «Perform extended testing» checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
Note: Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.
7. To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.

Hi Coastal,
Thanks for your prompt reply. Unfortuantely for me I no longer have the discs that came with the iMac. Is there anywhere i can download the discs or a copy of the Apple Hardware test that can be ran standalone? I’m not sure if this exists. If worst comes to worst I’ll have to flatten and reinstall. It’s just annoying as I think there maybe an underlying issue with the hardware. I’m experciancing some serious stability issues. I have other diagnostics software for normal PC’s but unfortunately it doesn’t run on Mac’s.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I understand AHT can be downloaded from github. I have not done this or downloaded from them before so you are on your own, but it is the only download option that I know about.

Doesn’t work. That’s where the error message comes from. Pressing D only works if you have the install DVD in the drive, Option + D loads Internet Recovery and is supposed to work as long as you’re connected to a network. Using this option is what’s causing said error message.

MY MBP was working very well with yosemite (mid 2010 build) until it ‘updated’ last week. Now I can’t even use it without it crashing!! I’m so annoyed. I get the impression that the newer the software & the older the machine, the less likely these two will cooperate together! Are there any clever techies out there who can help diagnose the problem before I wipe the hard drive & re-install from a back up? I’m only glad I have an iPad to use while I’m stuck with this problem! 😠

Same here. MacBook Pro mid-2010. Having problems since Yosemite install a month or two ago. Nothing happens when I try to boot holding down the d key. The system just sits until I release the d key, at which time it reboots in normal mode. Option-d causes the error everyone else is getting here.

To all that get that code. It means your Mac cannot do the hardware test from the internet. You need the install disk that has the hardware test on it. Then you boot it and hold down D or Command D at startup.

I first also had trouble. Funny thing was that with the power connected the led in the connector near the laptop was not green or range but not doing anything. Then I disconnected the connector to the white square block (with power still connected) and the led was again green. Very strange! Then the laptop booted and I could do the restore process ( Created bootable El Capitan USB / Installed fresh version of El Capitan / Restored data with Time Machine ).

Finally, determining if your computer supports loading Apple Hardware Diagnostics over the internet isn’t necessarily easy to do using the info from Apple. Quoted from their webpage, » Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion and later support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT. «
FFS

Question: Q: Error code 3403D on iMac

This thing has been a terrific workhorse for nearly 7 years. Only thing I’ve had done was a new power supply in 2013.
It’s freezing intermittently — I can move the cursor but that’s all — it doesn’t activate anything. I have to restart.
So I tried to run AHT but it won’t run. Tried to run it from the internet (Command D) but again no luck — except this time it gave me that error message. Does anybody know what it means? And what I should do about it — and about the freezing?

While this may be true, it is odd that the machine appears to attempt to load the hardware test (it goes through all the correct motions before bringing us to the -3404D error). Further, why not simply give a message like, «Sorry, hardware test via the internet is not supported on this Mac,» rather than some unhelpful, cryptic message?
Finally, determining if your computer supports loading Apple Hardware Diagnostics over the internet isn’t necessarily easy to do using the info from Apple. Quoted from their webpage, » Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion and later support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. That is what I get when I attempt to access the Apple Hardware Test by holding down Option/D during boot. This came about because I was getting the dreaded periodic 3 klaxons and reboot. I recently upgraded my system RAM from 4GB to 8GB along with changing out the internal HDD.
OWC advised me to reset the PRAM, which I have done. Does anyone know what that code means? The computer is running great and OWC says that it is important to do a PRAM reset whenever RAM is changed or upgraded. Makes sense to me, but the error code is bugging me. Does not allow me to progress to the Hardware Test.
As always, thanx in advance for any advice from the experts.
Cheers and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.

Sounds like you have a model 2009/2010 6.2 MacBook Pro which suffered this problem with graphics. Have a read of this from Apple Discussions:-
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6852196?start=0&tstart=0
No sir. I saw that thread in my search of the error code. So far I have come up empty in explaining the issue on an iMac. Even OWC was stumped. I have a Mid 2010 iMac 11.2 upgraded to 10.11.2, 1 TB HDD and 8 GB of RAM.

Got it. Thank you. Well, at least it is good to know I am not the only one who misplaces their discs. When I locate them, I will run the test, but in the meantime I am confident the PRAM reset will stop that godawful klaxon alarm and reset.

Got the original disc which came with the iMac? If so run AHT from there. As your iMac was released prior to Lion OS X.7 the Option D will not work, only the original DVD:-
http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apple-hw-test-error-code-3403d.1939078/
Found the two discs. Oh, happy day! Which disc do I use? I assume it is the Application Install DVD? I hate to assume that is why I am asking.;D
