We were recently alerted by a customer that there is apparently a conflict with ANSYS installations if Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6 (RHEL 6.6) is installed. We have confirmed this here at PADT. This effects several versions of ANSYS, including 15.0.7, 14.5, and 14.0. The primary problem seems to be with meshing in the Mechanical or Meshing window.
The windows errors encountered can be: “A software execution error occurred inside the mesher. The process suffered an unhandled exception or ran out of usable memory.” or “an inter-process communication error occurred while communicating with the MESHER module.”
The error message popup can look like this:
or
Note that the Platform Support page on the ANSYS website does not list RHEL 6.6 as supported. RHEL is only supported up through 6.5 for ANSYS 15.0.
That all being said, there is a workaround that should allow you to continue using ANSYS Workbench with RHEL 6.6 if you encounter the error. It involves renaming a directory in the installation path:
In this directory:
/ansys_inc/v150/commonfiles/MainWin/linx64/mw/lib-amd64-linux/
Rename the folder ‘X11’ to ‘Old-X11’
After that change, you should be able to successfully complete meshes, etc,. in ANSYS Workbench. Keep in mind that RHEL 6.6 is not officially supported by ANSYS, Inc. and their recommendation is always to stick with supported levels of operating systems. These are always listed in the ANSYS Help for the particular version you are running as well as at the link shown above.
Since the renamed directory is contained within the ANSYS installation files, it is believed that this will not affect anything else other than ANSYS. Use at your own risk, however. Should you encounter one of more of the errors listed above, we hope this article has provided useful information to keep your ANSYS installations up and running.

I successfully installed ANSYS 12.1.1 on my SLES 10 SP 1 system (64bit Opteron).
I tested the workbench (design modeler (DM) and meshing application) with small test-cases like meshing a cube. It worked well. But then I tried to import a big model from a windows platform (about 10 million elements). The DM worked well but when i tried to mesh it with the meshing application it displayed the following message:
A software execution error occurred inside the mesher. The process suffered an unhandled exception or ran out of usable memory.
Actually, my machine has 64GB memory this should be more than enough
I am afraid the workbench cannot allocate the physical available memory for some reason. Maybe there is a hidden parameter which enables the workbench/mesher to allocate more memory?
Or is there any special procedure to convert workbench models from windows to linux which should be kept in mind? I just copied the files from one system to the other.
By the way, the mesher worked well on the windows platform with a coarse grid. However, for the fine grid i need the big linux machine.
Does anybody experience a similar problem? I appreciate any hint .

It can handle 64GB of RAM fine. You need to log a call with support to let them help you work out why it is not working.

ANSYS 19.1 installation on Linux
I have been trying to install ANSYS 19.1 on Linux for half day, and it remains at 89% of the installation for so long. It may be some errors because the administrator of the cluster have tried too and had the same problem.
It would be great if someone could help me to solve this problem.
Please provide the output of
Then, refer to the Linux Installation guide Chapter 2 : Platform Details . This Chapter would list all prerequisites for different OS level. Make sure that the prerequisites are installed.
Also, don’t install it on your home directory. Ask your cluster admin to install it in the directory that’s accessible by any users.
Here is the output
CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708 (Core)
PRETTY_NAME=»CentOS Linux 7 (Core)»
CPE_NAME=»cpe o:centos:centos:7″
CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708 (Core)
CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708 (Core)
Do I need install all the libraries indicated in CentOS 7.3 even if my version is 7.4.1708? I can’t use sudo; how could I install the libraries?
I am reading that chapter to check what I am missing, but at this moment I need to install in my home directory because the cluster admin spent a day trying to install in the directory that’s accessible by any users without any luck, and he is not willing to spend more time, so if this works in my home directory he will scale up.

How To run ANSYS Release 13.0 Workbench on 64-bit Linux
Getting ANSYS Workbench up and running on Linux at R13 is pretty simple. You just have to make sure that a few things are in place and some packages are loaded. Then it works great. Here is a quick HOW-TO on getting things going:
Pre-Install Tasks
- Install CentOS 5.3 or greater or RHEL5
- Download and install the latest graphics card drivers for your video card. Restart
- Download and install the latest graphics card drivers for your video card. Restart
- Next, Gnome Desktop Environment is required for optimum use.
- Next, Using the Linux Package Manager. Select the Development main group and then select the additional libraries all needed. (see images below)
- Select Optional packages and then select the additional MESA libraries (see below).
- Next, select the Base System main group, then X Window system, and Legacy Software Support. With Legacy software support still selected. Click Optional Packages and select the additional package – openmotif22 and click close.
Post ANSYS Install Setup Tasks
- Within your Terminal session. Type ProductConfig.sh
- Click Configure Products, then select the products to configure or reconfigure
- Pro/E Configuration GUI
- Unigraphics NX install Configuration GUI
- Click Continue and the product configuration script will run.
How to launching ANSYS Release 13.0 Workbench
- Open a Linux terminal session:
- Change your path to include /ansys_inc/v130/Framework/bin/Linux64
- Next, launch the program by typing ./runwb2 and press enter
- Basic opening up of a Design Modeler project

Hi everybody,
since I had a lot of issues installing Ansys on Ubuntu, I summarize here all the steps (some picked up inside this forum) that are required to have a running version. I suggest to use standard MESA driver instead of nvidia or AMD drivers because I also need to use xrdp 0.9.4 (to have remote access) and it does not work with those drivers.
The required packages from the installation guide (for RedHat/CentOS) are:
• libXp.x86_64
• xorg-x11-fonts-cyrillic.noarch
• xterm.x86_64
• openmotif.x86_64
• compat-libstdc++-33.x86_64
• libstdc++.x86_64
• libstdc++.i686
• gcc-c++.x86_64
• compat-libstdc++-33.i686
• libstdc++-devel.x86_64
• libstdc++-devel.i686
• compat-gcc-34.x86_64
• gtk2.i686
• libXxf86vm.i686
• libSM.i686
• libXt.i686
• xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-75dpi.noarch
• glibc-2.12-1.166.el6_7.1 (or greater)
1. Therefore I installed:
Then answer «No» to the question.
6. From DVD1 install Ansys, launch:

I thought it might be useful to share my experience installing Ansys 17.1 on Ubuntu 16.04.
I still had the issue with «Unable to resolve function glXMakeCurrent» after going through the recommended fixes too.
I managed to solve it by creating a link to the libGL library as ANSYS DesignModeller is expecting to find libGL.so.1 in /usr/lib/
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
You should use the libGL library specific to your computer. I found mine using:
Everything seems to work at the moment
Workbench has upgraded to workbench 2.0 after Ansys15.
If I may add my recent experience installing Ansys 18 on Opensuse Leap 42.1:
After the installation, I was facing errors of this type when starting fluent or other tools with a GUI:
The tips given here definitely helped ANSYS Workbench on «Uncertified» Linux Distros
But this way the Nvidia driver was not used which caused the programs to run extremely slow and choppy.
I figured out the only thing I needed to do instead was adding the library path to the Nividia driver. In my case this was:
Yes, I your solution is correct. I also added the following in «.bashrc» file for myself and it worked.
Mine is local installation (not root). Just to sum up here for others.
1. open bash file
$vim .bashrc
2. add the following lines at the end of file and set the path according to your installation
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/media/shoonya/Pacific/ANSYS171/ansys_inc/v171/Framework/bin/Linux64/Mesa
export FLUENT_ARCH=»lnamd64″
/media/shoonya/Pacific/ANSYS171/ansys_inc/v171/Framework/bin/Linux64/runwb2 -oglmesa
3. Source the .bashrc file (or logout)
$. .bashrc
4. run the following command (make changes according to your path of executable «runwb2»)
I’ve the same errors in ansys_inc/install.err , it seems that there is a small problem in an installation script. On my 32 bit ubuntu this does not prevent Design Modeller to work (but, as said before, Meshing does not).
For the «blank graphics screen» problem in Design Modeller on my 64 bit distro, I found a workaround : add the following two directories in LD_LIBRARY_PATH before calling runwb2:
ansys_inc/v121/Framework/bin/Mesa
ansys_inc/v121/Framework/bin
In fact the «mono» executable called by runwb2 (an horrible windows-like programming environment, but freeware, so don’t shout at it !), should pre-load openGL libraries (more exactly their «mesa» variant) because of an environment variable LD_PRELOAD set by runwb2. Seems that it doesn’t work. Maybe it’s not transmitted to windows executables running DM or Meshing? But with LD_LIBRARY_PATH, for me it works.
I use the following script called wb2, placed in /usr/local/bin (which is in my path), to run ansys, in place of runwb2:
Sorry to hijack this post, but this seems to be the best place to post questions regarding getting CFX to work on uncertified distros. As a first note, my distro is Ubuntu 16.04 and my Ansys version is 18.2. I have used Ansys 18.2 on UBuntu 16.04: Installation Guide in order to install Ansys on my desktop. Everything in general works perfectly fine, including running from workbench or standalone.
However, I run into an issue when I attempt to perform parallel calculations using the Intel MPI method (both local and distributed). Namely, the issue seems to be when writing results. The calculations are performed perfectly fine as I can view the residuals in the Solver Manager and they behave exactly as they do in serial. The issue is when it comes to writing the results file, the solver hangs indefinitely. Checking CPU usage shows that all designated processors are working at 100%, but nothing is being done. My guess is that the slave nodes are continuously sending signals to the master node (hence why all processors are working 100%), but either the master node is not listening or isn’t there.
I know this problem is to do with the set up as using the tutorials as a case study gives the exact same problem. Furthermore, it is not an issue with using the GUI as it behaves exactly the same way if I run it from command line or not. Unfortunately, I cannot use a different parallel method as the only available one is the IBM method, but when I attempt to use it, the solver complains about a missing library (libmport.so), which a quick Google turns up no results.
Has anyone experienced something similar or have any advice of how I may fix this problem? Thank you in advance.

Ошибка: «An error occurred inside the SOLVER module: general error.»
An error occurred inside the SOLVER module: general error.

An error occurred inside the solver module: general error
I’m setting up simulation with Ansys LS-Dyna in 19.2 version. However each time I try to solve the simulation it’s give me error massage
«An error occurred inside the solver module: general error»
How does overcome this. I’m really fed-up testing with simple to FEA setting and trying solved. No luck each time gave me this error massage.
This is most common error, and it’s most of the time happen due to
- Incorrectly define material data
- Incorrect mesh size or mesh pattern
- Involving in large deformation/Non-linear behavior
- Load -Boundary condition & time stepping
As common good practice do the following changes ang you get lucky enough to get solution.
Static Structural
- Simplify the model as much as possible and remove the unwanted section or features that are not affect to analysis.
- Check the material model. Whether material data correctly defined and all the require material data defined for the analysis type.
- For initial test analysis scale down the model or get the half or section depending on the symmetric and start getting result. Then you can expand the FEA setting for actual model/or section.
- Define the mesh size and element order based on solver, analysis type, model, Try to use Multizone meshing
- Check for the contacts/contacts types and evaluate the initial contact setting with «Contact Tools» correct them
- If the one body undergo a displacement, then split the analysis time to small interval and define the displacement for that particular time interval. (ex if the analysis time is 0.001 and displacement 10 mm, then split the time 0.0001, 0.0002,0.0003. 0.001 and displacement 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm. 10 mm)
- For non-linear simulation, it’s always better to have Finer mesh
- Set ON for Large Deflection
- Set the 0.0001s «End Time» and with result fine tune
- If the one section or body undergo a large deformation, and you are doing Static Structural Simulation define the, «Nonlinear Adaptive Region» Nonlinear Control -> Newton-Raphson Option ->Unsymmetrical & Nonlinear Control -> Stabilization -> ON
- Use the «Automatic Mass Scaling -> ON» and keep the total mass scaling less than 5% for accuracy
- Start with Program Controlled setting if you don’t know the really what setting need to set and expand the correct setting when evolve the solution
Sometimes some of the Explicitly Dynamic, LS-Dyna solution can be archive via Statics Structural method. But it’s always not easy.
Explicit Dynamic / Ansys LS-Dyna
- Simplify the model as much as possible and remove the unwanted section or features that not affect to analysis.
- Check the material model. Whether material data correctly defined and all the require material data defined for the analysis type. For LS-Dyna / or Explicit dynamic make sure failure criteria defined.
- Define the mesh size and element order based on solver, analysis type, model.
- For non-linear simulation, it’s always better to have Finer mesh
- coarse mesh used to to gain the insight
- Set the 0.01s «End Time» and with result fine tune
- If you are running Explicitly Solver, assign the element erode card
- Use the «Automatic Mass Scaling -> ON» and keep the total mass scaling less than 5% for accuracy

An error occurred while starting the solver module Ansys problem
An error occurred while starting the solver module Ansys problem
An error occurred while starting the solver module Ansys problem
I am using Ansys 18 on my PC and I was trying to rerun a simulation I had already solved. And I am getting the error «an error occurred while starting the solver module»
I tried everything I could but it is not running on my PC.
I completely reinstalled ANSYS (Deleted every file by going in safe mode) still the error is there. I can’t even run a simple problem such as a rectangular beam with an axial load.
I have around 40Gb space in C and 80 Gb in D drive (where files are saved).
I checked Virtual memory settings and they were as before, around 10Gb allotted.
I can run the same problem in another PC.
RE: An error occurred while starting the solver module Ansys problem
After searching online, it seems one of the following causes of error and possible solution but I am not sure. And yes this might be the error due to solver file issues which might be modified after system/version upgrade or corruption —
— For student version, node count greater than allowed might cause this error.
— Search help documentation -Mechanical Application => Mechanical User’s guide => Troubleshooting => Problem Situation. There is description about this problem. Check that.
— Make sure you have all the file names and folder names in English/as per naming rules
-Check out the solve.out file in solver directory (RMB click on the Solutions and open solver files directly) for any possible errors
-Formatting the installation drive and Ansys reinstallation (Which you already did, I guess)
-Renaming the C:Users AppDataRoamingAnsys vXX file to vXX.old
-check the name references for the loads and boundary conditions, named selection sets, sets which may be modified when you converted from previous version
-Start MAPDL. If you get any error wrt «libifcoremd.dll», then rename the the same file in c:WindowsSystem32 and c:WindowsSysWOW64 with .old extension. try running MAPDL and then mechanical.
— Go to Tools => Solve process settings=>Advanced=>tick off the distributed solver and GPU acceleration to None and then run the analysis
— Are you saving your project to a network drive or OneDrive folder? Try saving on local drive and then run.
If you still get the error, you may need to contact Ansys local support.

-Did you format the installation drive or do complete reinstall of windows OS?
-If the MAPDL is starting without any issue then try and run a simple problem in MAPDL first and then try another problem in Workbench. If MAPDL is working without any error then why there is «solver» error? It should work without any error cause Mechanical uses same MAPDL solver.
-Check if there is any license issue.
If nothing is working, you need to connect with Ansys support.

ANSYS Workbench Simulation Solver Error
ANSYS Workbench Simulation Solver Error
ANSYS Workbench Simulation Solver Error
Here’s the jist of the problem:
I modelled a solid O-ring. I fixed one face and applied pressure on another face. I clicked Solve, and it gave me an error. The window gave the message: «An Error Occurred While Starting the ANSYS Solver Module» and told me to check the ANSYS troubleshooting section in the manual. The manual suggests that I increase my virtual memory or move the temporary files to a new space where I will have enough disk space.
The thing is, I already have my virtual memory set at 8GB and my computer specs are as follows:
-2GB RamCPU Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe E6400 2.13GHz FSB 1066, 2MB CPU

It’s a gaming rig and I am pretty sure I have more than enough to run/store the files. All my ANSYS workbench settings are at default. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmmm that’d odd. How many DOF’s is your model? If you’re modeling an o-ring why don’t you make it axisymmetric? Your run time and file sizes will be many times smaller.

Can you run any of the Ansys test/demo jobs on your machine ? Maybe the error is not specific to your o-ring problem.
RE: ANSYS Workbench Simulation Solver Error
I can model parts with no problems, but when I modelled a solid cube or imported some part drawings from CATIA and tried to do some of the simulation tests (i.e. with a simple clamp + force), it still gave me the same errors.
When I try to generate a volume mesh in CFX on a simple part drawn in DesignModeler, it gives me 4 errors. They’re stated as follows:
1) The location F1604.2024,F1605.2024, etc. refers to # primitive regions that do not appear in the geometry. These regions are: F1621.2024, F1847.2024, etc.
2) There was a problem processing the location of the face spacing
Default Face Spacing
3)Because of the problems with the face spacing «Default Face Spacing»
it is being ignored.
4)Unable to identify the default body spacing «Default Face Spacing» referred to
in the «Default Face Spacing» parameter of the «Default/SPACING» spacing object.
So only my Designmodeler works. Simulation & CFX does not. Is it my settings?
