Check the disk for errors
Symptoms
- You attempt to create Survival Kit on an external USB disk
-
Survival Kit creation fails with the following error:
A format/resize error.
File system error is found. Consider checking the disk using Check Disk Utility.
Cause
Disk contains errors and/or bad sectors.
Solution
Run Check Disk utility to fix errors on your disk:
- Go to Start -> Search -> type «cmd«; you should see Command Prompt in the results. Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
- Type following command: chkdsk <driveletter>: /f /r

Symptoms
You have a disk-level backup (of entire machine, individual disks or volumes) and try to restore this backup.
Restore fails with:
| Error 0x2160008: Format/Resize error.
| line: 0x70c3c482200869e7
| file: f:socr_etda_apicontext_disk.cpp:572

| file: f:socr_etresizerntfsfs_ntfs_filter.cpp:999
| function: resizer::NTFSProcessor::DeleteFilesFromIndex
| $module: tstfdisk_vsa64_s_1
Cause
These errors indicates that the file system in the image is corrupted and the file system errors interfere with volume mapping («resizing») during recovery.
Solution
To resolve this issue:
- Acronis Cyber Backup 12.5: if you are using Build 11010 or later, use regular Linux-based bootable media
Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud: if you are using Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud 7.7 or later, use regular Linux-based bootable media.
If you are using an older build — download this custom bootable media.
- Perform disk check with the Check Disk Tool:
- Attach the restored disk to another machine.
- Run the Disk Check Tool by issuing in the Command Prompt:
chkdsk /f
- Apply Acronis Universal Restore:
- Boot the machine with the bootable media.
- Select Apply Universal Restore and follow on-screen instructions.

Recovery Format/Resize Error
Unable to recover drive from backup. Tired recovering with default options as well as sector-by-sector and having the same issue. The backup and destination disks are the exactly the same.
Is there anything else I can try?
Swissbit 256GB CFast Card -SFCA256GH1AD4T0-I-HT-226-STD
I am a little confused; if you are recovering from a backup how can you switch to sector by sector, which suggest you are cloning.
The log file has a «Format/Resize error» near the start, there is also «error 0x29b138d: Input/output error», and «error 0xfff0: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.» There are some references to this second error in the Knowledge Base which suggests that there is a problem accessing the target drive (although it could be the other drive in this case.
There is also «Error 0x13c0005: Operation has completed with errors».
Unfortunately these error codes are only understood to Acronis engineers.
How are the drives connected to the computer — I gather they compact flash drives with a SATA interface. Are they connected to SATA ports on the motherboard or via a docking station. Have you tried other ports and replacing the cables, as they could be faulty.
Steve Smith who know a lot more about these things than I do may have additional suggestions.
EDIT: I have a dim recollection that the resize error can be caused by file system error or physical damage to the drive. Have you checked the drives for errors? What files system do they use?

[Resolved] OS recovery fails with resize / formatting error.
I completed a disk level save of a SATA 256GB SSD using Simple boot media (Windows based — UEFI) in ATI 2018. This drive was my C: drive and holds Win 10 OS to the machine. This backup was successful.
I am trying to restore to a SATA 512GB SSD using same boot media. I’ve tried restoring whole disk at once and also doing one partition at a time. The system reserved and recovery partition restore fine but the data part fails with «formatting // resizing» error, then says archive is corrupt and then the whole recovery fails.
I already formatted my old drive (needed it for another machine).
I’m working on creating win10 media to get into diskpart to try and create partitions manually. If that fails, I’ve also got some older backups on my NAS I can try. If none of that works I may see if I can just reinstall windows and then just restore the files over that. If all else fails I guess I will be reinstalling Windows from scratch.
I appreciate any suggestions in the meantime.
Chris, welcome to these User Forums.
Please see KB 60131: Acronis True Image 2018: how to restore your computer with WinPE-based or WinRE-based media for an overview of the process required here to perform a successful recovery.
Pay particular attention to step 2. in the above document where it says:
Arrange the boot order in BIOS so as to make your rescue media device (CD, DVD or USB stick) the first boot device. See Arranging boot order in BIOS or UEFI BIOS.
If you use an UEFI computer, please pay attention to the boot mode of the bootable media in UEFI BIOS. It is recommended that the boot mode matches the type of the system in the backup. If the backup contains a BIOS system, then boot the bootable media in BIOS mode; if the system is UEFI, then ensure that UEFI mode is set.
You wrote: ‘The system reserved and recovery partition restore fine‘ but also wrote: ‘Windows based — UEFI) in ATI 2018‘ for the context where your backup image was created.
If your computer boots to Windows 10 using UEFI where the BIOS Boot setting is for the ‘Windows Boot Manager’, then you should have an EFI partition instead of having a Microsoft System Reserved partition, where the latter is used by older, non-UEFI systems booting in Legacy mode and using MBR drives. If your drive is GPT partitioned then UEFI is required to support this.

Disk Cloning Error (Error 0x101f6: A format/resize error.»
I have a 1TB Toshiba HDD, and I recently bought a MX500 250 Gb SSD. I’m trying to clone the HDD but everytime I use the Clone Disk Tool, during the «Synchronizing with operating system process», it says «Disk cloning has failed. See log for details.» The logs says «Error 0x101f6: A format/resize error.» and «error 0x2160008: A format/resize error.». I’m using only 137 gigabytes in the HDD and the SSD have nothing in it.
Nicolas, welcome to these public User Forums.
Thank for the log file for this issue. What I am seeing here is that the clone tool is having an issue resizing your larger C: File system: NTFS Volume label: Size: 535;3 GB -> 152;5 GB
This can occur because there is unmovable data present within the partition.
I would suggest trying to reduce the size of your two large partition on the source 1TB drive to make these partitions small enough to fit on the new SSD with further resizing. You can try to do this using Windows Disk Management and taking the option to ‘Shrink’ the volumes — this will give you an immediate indication of how small Windows thinks the partition can go to.
The alternative method would be to use a partition tool such as the free MiniTool Partition Wizard to do any resizing of the partitions, which will have greater success in doing so than Disk Management.

William, from a quick look at the log messages, you are moving from a smaller disk to a larger one therefore there is no need to shrink the main C: OS partition.
How are you doing the clone here?
How are the source and target drives connected?
What type of computer is involved? If this is a laptop computer as suggested by the SSD make / model, then see the warning below:
Please see KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk — and review the step by step guide given there.
Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive — and has the following paragraph:
It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive, as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning.
I would strongly recommend making a full disk backup of your source HDD drive before doing any further clone attempts — this is your safety net in case of other problems arising.
You should also consider using Backup & Recovery instead of using Cloning as this can deal with these resizing issues with more flexibility than when using clone.
Note: you will need to use the ATI Rescue Media to follow the advice about.

Can you help me?
Juan, welcome to these public User Forums.
Please see my comments in the previous post to your one (#3), in particular the link describing how laptop / notebook drives need to be cloned in order to be bootable.
Your log shows that ATI hit an issue with resizing the old main C: OS partition from 446.4 GB to 930.8 GB and the associated error line: error 0x70025: Index corrupted shows that there is a file system error on the original Crucial 500 GB SSD that you need to fix before attempting to clone again.
You should run CHKDSK C: /F to check for the file system error and try to fix it.

Ok, thanks for your help!!
Steve, first I run CHKDSK C: /F and after that I run the Acronis in Manual mode «proportional» (both of them «as administrator») . Disk cloning finished successfully.
Thanks again for your help!
I also need some help please. I assume that I make a mistake that I can not see for lack of knowledge. I am trying to clone a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB to a 870 EVO 500GB to have more available storage. I am using a Benfei USB to SATAIII adapter to connect the new drive. I am using Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (standard), build 10173 Also getting the 0x101f6 error. Below the log, could not be uploaded sorry. If a translation from german to english is needed I will try my best to do so 🙂
Can anyone please tell me what I can do or what info is missing to help me?

Возьмите утилиту Victoria 4.47 for Windows.

Acronis True Image 2018
Acronis’ a,
I’ve got a server that hosts files (mostly video). It had 8x 2TB drives in it, and I just added two more 2TB drives bringing me up to 10. After reconfiguring the RAID array, I went to expand the drive size using the server 2008 R2 manager. I was told that the drive couldn’t be expanded because of my cluster size. After doing some research online, I was told that I need to use a 3rd party program to get this done.
Loaded up Acronis and chose the resize option. Told it to use the maximum size and it said that it would need to reboot. I went ahead with it and it said it was successful. Got back into windows, look in my computer, double click on the drive, and windows states that it needs to be formatted first. Starting to get a sick feeling in my stomach.
I fire back up acronis and the drive shows up fine, and when I use the file browse mode, I can see my files still on the drive. What do I need to do in order for this drive to be usable in windows again. I can’t loose this data.
Edit: This server is my home server that is used to store movies, music, TV shows etc. I’m not a rich man, so no, I don’t have a backup handy for 16TB. This is a risk and I understand that, but it’s not a workplace production server.
Edit 2: I was able to successfully shrink the partition back down to less than 15TB and I’m able to use it again in windows.
