I just set up a quick test, and it failed immediately. I haven’t even been using Bridge today…
The computer runs CS5 on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I used to run CS3/CS4 on a different computer loaded with Windows XP Professional. I’m always up-to-date with OS/driver/application updates. Both systems exhibited the same problem.
The raw image 3-tier folder hierarcy is on a separate internal drive: P:Camera20118-15 Location, P:Camera20118-16 Location, etc.
The Bridge cache is on a separate internal drive: T:BridgeCS5, Camera Raw’s cache is in T:CameraRaw.
The images are mostly Nikon NEF (D300), and ACR saves settings to ‘sidecar’ files. Most of the images have settings, and many have crops.
I created a new Collection, and dragged the contents of 7 image folders into it — a total of 407 images. None of these files have had keywords applied, but most had been worked in Camera Raw already. After waiting for thumbnail/preview generation to finish, I selected the collection, created a new sub-keyword, selected all images in the collection, and ticked the new keyword (automatically ticking the parent keyword). Within a few seconds, I started getting the «Error writing metadata…» warnings, and had to OK 15 images.
The failed images were spread across 3 of the 7 selected directories. Trying the same thing 30 minutes later resulted in the same errors. Trying each failed image individually gave the same error (either as part of the collection, or from it’s own folder).
I opened one of the problem images in Camera Raw, and adjusted Blacks, clicking Done to save the settings. I then tried to apply the keywords again. This time it worked.
To answer your questions directly:
1. I have never experienced this problem keywording files individually (apart from after the errors, as mentioned above), but then I wouldn’t usually be selecting lots of images to keyword individual images.
2. Yes, I always wait for the spinning circles to disappear, sometimes even longer!
3. I just tried applying keywords to a single folder of 102 images, and 2 failed to update. So the answer is No, it fails at real locations too.
4. Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, running on Intel Core2 Duo and 4GB RAM. Same thing happened before on a Windows XP Professional PC, running on an Intel Pentium 4 and 2GB RAM and a single hard drive.
I hope that helps.
Just to concur on a couple of things: Bridge is a viewer with lots of capabilities. But when it’s looking at a file(s), and you assign various metadata to that file(s), when you leave that file and go onto the next, the data remains with that file(s). If Bridge crashed, it’s not going to go back and delete all of the things in the file(s) that it is no longer working with.
This is no different than if you opened a Word file, did something, left that file, went onto the next and then Word crashes. The contents of that first file are not affected. The only difference in my analogy is that you have to save the Word file but when you add metadata to a file, when you close that window the contents are self-saved.
If all of your changes were lost, something else happened, it wasn’t Bridge that lost those changes. It can’t have been.
Now, that doesn’t mean something didn’t happen, obviously something did. There are several things that I’d like you to try and maybe we can boil this down and find the issues. My guess is that something happened on your Mac that is causing the error message that you’re getting AND caused the loss of metadata.
One thought here before I provide you with a buch of maintenance tasks: you said you have some 20 K images on your main hard drive. Really? How big is your hard drive? And much more important, how much free space do you have left on your computer? Generally, you should always have at least 1/3 — 1/4 hard drive space left on your computer at all times so it can do what it needs to do. I wonder if this might be some (or all) of your problem. Please check this now and if your hard drive is almost full, get yourself two external drives and start moving your images onto one of the external drives (the 2nd one is to back up the first drive).
Otherwise, here are some self-maintenance things that you can do that will cost nothing but a little time.
1) Go Download Catalina Cache Cleaner. It’s free to download and you have a full use trial period. In the end, if you don’t like it, toss it but it has helped me a number of times. If you buy it the charge is nominal. It does a variety of things but the two you should try is the general maintenance operations, click on ALL and then click on Run. (These are things that are supposed to be self-run by the Mac OS while the computer is asleep but this just guarantees that they are done.) Then click on the Cache tab, select the Middle option and run in on all Caches. (Note: it will seem like nothing has happened but wait a few minutes and then you’ll have to restart your computer. Just be patient)
If that does not clear things up, then…
2) Go into Safe Mode. Restart your computer and when the screen goes black, press the Shift key until the progress bar is displaying for a minute or two. This startup will take a lot longer than you think it should and if it’s much much longer, that means that the Mac is doing a lot of repair on your system. Your Mac will run ridiculously slow after you start up and if you want to see if Bridge is crashing or not you can but I can’t say it will make much of a difference.
If that does not clear things up, then…
3) Go into Repair Mode: Restart your computer and when the screen goes black press the Option + Command + r keys. When you see a glob spinning, you can let go. This will take a long time, 5-20 minutes depending on your Internet speeds. During this you may or may not be asked to sign into your wifi (if you’re on wifi). [One option to get around this delay is if you have a partition with an operating system on your computer or a separate hard drive to boot up off of.] Now go into Disk First Aid and see this dropdown menu in upper left corner of the DFA and select Show All Devices:
(If you do not see this, restart into a normal startup and then repeat #3.) Once selected, you should see your hard drive displaying something like this. (It will be different because I took these screenshots running DFA while I’m writing this.)
Now, run this from top down. That is select a top offering, and run the process. If you see any errors, run it again. Then, once clean do the next one, etc. The last one is «(your hard drive)» — Data.» Once that one is running clean, restart.
Once these are done, then restart Bridge with your fingers on the Shift-Command-Option keys. This will bring up a window asking if you want to trash your Bridge’s preferences (or something like that). Click yes. See if that solves the error messages.

Error writing metadata to file in Adobe Bridge
When adding or changing keywords in Adobe Bridge 4.0.4.2 using the keyword panel I frequently receive the following message: «Error writing metadata to <File>». Sometimes it helps stopping Bridge and opening it again. It is very annoying especially if I want to add keywords to a lot of files. Has anyone ever experienced this and is there a way to avoid this?

Not something I’ve come across personally. If you repeat the operation of the same files, does it stop at the same file again?
Could some of the files be marked read-only? Have you tried flushing the cache?

Yes I already tried to purge (flush?) the cache, using Tools — Cache — Purge Cache for Folder* (*Name of the folder). Within a selection of different files some work fine, but others are not and the same files keep coming back. After closing Bridge a couple of times, or rebooting, it is OK.

I’ve found that Bridge 4.0.4.2 is very unreliable in saving additions to metadata, especially keywords. I didn’t get errors but the keywords would just disappear or not save. So much so I resorted to using PSE7 to do this.

After a Google search I have come to the conclusion that there is no real solution for this issue. Many other users are dealing with it as well. So it does not seems to be a typical malfunctioning of my system. Because in the end — after several attempts — I always realize adding my keywords to the metadata of particular «capricious» files I am not going to insist for further feed back regarding this matter. Thanks to all those who took the time reading my thread.

It’s certainly frustrating.
For what it’s worth, I have found Bridge to have a few «personality disorders» over the past 3 or so versions — I seem to be able to trip it up from time to time. Quite surprising actually, as Photoshop is an incredibly complex piece of software and for the most part it’s extremely stable.

I have a Toshiba Equium P300-16 t and it has developed an error starting on the screen, it says
System error writing Configuration data
F1 — F2 CV — Bios settings
When it appears that I can’t get the option of recovery for work the bios settings seem to be completely in-accessible.
This error appears just under the version number of the bios and the specifications of the RAM, just after the toshiba screen. The laptop is also a beep which I think is its length bios error code just two beeps very loud and even with a very short break inbetween
On the page that appears after F1 (curriculum vitae) is pressed it shows just an another two options that are
F2 — Setup F12 Multiboot Menu selection
None of these options no matter what and the system is just idle on this screen.
Obviously, without the bios menu there is not much I can do
Really research help solve this problem as im not very clued up on the configurations of the system
Oh and incase it allows… BIOS version — PhoenixBIOS 4.0 release 6.1

In the BIOS, you should see the HARD drive and HARD drive details
If it is not visible, then that would mean that the HARD drive is faulty and therefore the operating system cannot be started.
In this case, the HARD disk needs to be changed.

For the first question, try to go to start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup and that should clear of junk. Then click Start | Run and type msconfig and disable the startup items, that you don’t need, as many programs decide that they must run at startup and clutter the machine when they do not need to. Also perform a defragmentation of the disk (under system tools also). See if that helps with performance and other issues.

Assuming that there really may be a disk or file system error, try to perform a ‘chkdsk’ on your hard drive. Use the /R if running chkdsk or check both options if you use the GUI version.

Be forewarned that control the boot volume occurs at the next reboot after you set up, it runs before Windows starts perfectly, cannot be interrupted and can take more than a few hours to run according to the size of the disk and the amount of corruption, as appropriate. I got the exact same error today by updating to Itunes. I found the cause of my problem. I had a firewall is installed and configured to block the QTTask.exe to talk to his server. The firewall to put the file in a list of quarantine and blocked all access to the file.
The Itunes update went through after that I removed it from the list of firewall quarantine.

If DB_FILES is set to 2000 in your database, file id 2001 is the first TEMPFILE. file 2003 is the third TEMPFILE.

After I edit files through MicrostockSubmitter the metadata seems to be corrupt somehow. If I later try to edit the metadata through Adobe Bridge I get the error «There was an error writing the metadata to image ….»
If I open the image in photoshop I can edit the metadata there but it is a bit of a painful workaround if I want to edit several images.

So it there is any problem reading metadata after StockSubmitter wrote it to images, it should be some problem with Exiftool.
Also Adobe Bridge may be confused by different types of metadata in single image. StockSubmitter writes metadata in three formats — EXIF, IPTC, XMP — to make sure it is read correctly in any software.
Earlier there was no problems with reading metadata written by StockSubmitter in any program including Adobe Bridge. It is strange you have such problems now. When did you start to encounter this issue? Did you upgrade Adobe Bridge or something like that?

anyone know which fields among exif, iptc and xmp are actually used by agencies? i’ve asked varius support but none have responded
i had a problem with microsoft protools in that what it calls the title wasnt getting read by all agencies. with exiftoolgui i need to enter info for both iptc and xmp to satisfy all agencies

Если поставить галочку на изменение настроек Camera RAW в Bridge по двойному щелчку, то при двойном клике по миниатюре будет запускаться приложение Camera RAW, в противном случае запускается Photoshop. Если вы обрабатываете файлы в Camera RAW, тот галочку можно поставить, это позволит сэкономить время на загрузке фотографий. Миниатюры
На этой вкладке настраиваются параметры миниатюр. Можно установить максимальный размер файлов, для которых будут формироваться миниатюры (по умолчанию это 1000 Мб) и выбрать данные, которые будут показываться под миниатюрами. От размера обрабатываемых файлов зависит скорость работы программы, и здесь я советую оставить значение по умолчанию.
Что касается данных под миниатюрами, то все зависит от того, какие действия вы производите над своими фотографиями. Не советую выбирать много данных, поскольку это сильно перегружает окно и делает работу неудобной (попробуйте сами) но необходимый минимум нужных параметров часто бывает очень полезным.
Последний пункт – подсказки по инструментам – позволяет включить всплывающие подсказки на начальном этапе изучения работы программы.
Воспроизведение
Относится к аудио и видео файлам, а поскольку мы рассматриваем только обработку фотографий, то все оставляем по умолчанию.
Метаданные
Позволяет выбрать те метаданные, которые будут отображаться в соответствующих окнах программы. Настраиваются под конкретную задачу обработки.

Типы файлов
Специфический пункт, который лучше не трогать, поскольку при неправильных установках могут возникнуть сложности при открытии некоторых типов файлов. При случайных ошибках надо сразу восстановить умолчания («Восстановить сопоставления по умолчанию»).
Кэш
Это папка, в которой хранятся те миниатюры, которые создает Adobe Bridge. Программа создает свои собственные миниатюры, которые вы и видите в соответствующих окнах, а хранятся эти миниатюры в кэше.
Галочка в пункте «Сохранять в кэше изображения в исходном качестве» означает, что миниатюры сохраняются в кэше в исходном размере, ее рекомендую поставить.
Расположение кэша можно изменить, например, если на системном диске не хватает места. Можно также определить максимальное количество миниатюр в кэше, сжать или просто стереть его. Эти параметры зависят от характеристик вашего компьютера, но в общем случае их можно оставить по умолчанию.
Запуск сценариев
Все оставляем по умолчанию, поскольку некорректные изменения могут нарушить взаимодействие Adobe Bridge с другими приложениями.

Здесь все достаточно понятно благодаря комментариям. Можно порекомендовать отметить пункт «Запускать Bridge при входе в систему», это позволит несколько ускорить работу при запуске, поскольку программа уже будет находиться фоновом режиме и вызвать ее можно практически мгновенно. Но это в том случае, когда обработка фотографий – основная работа на вашем компьютере, поскольку открытие большого количества фоновых программ все таки перегружает операционную систему и в общем случае не рекомендуется.

Удаление файла настроек Adobe Bridge
Чтобы полностью удалить файл настроек Adobe Bridge, надо во время запуска программы удерживать сочетание клавиш CTRL+ALT и в открывшемся окне отметить обе галочки. Это приходится иногда делать, если вы что-то напутали в настройках, и программа стала работать некорректно.

Попробуйте выполнить следующие действия в указанном порядке.
1. Обновите Bridge до последней версии.
2. Сбросьте настройки, переопределите рабочую среду по умолчанию и очистите кэш.
Поврежденные установки или рабочие среды могут вызвать неожиданное поведение в Adobe Bridge. Очистка кэша может устранить проблему отображения при просмотре эскизов.
Запустите Adobe Bridge и немедленно нажмите Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) или Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) до тех пор, пока не появится диалоговое окно сброса настроек.
Выберите все 3 параметра — «Сброс установок», «Восстановление стандартных рабочих сред» и «Очистить кэш-память эскизов», а затем нажмите кнопку OK.

Найдите местоположение и запомните путь для папки кэша.
В проводнике (Windows) или в программе Finder перейдите к папке кэша.
Перетащите папку кэша в корзину в Windows или в Mac OS.
Примечание. При очистке кэша некоторые метки и оценки могут быть потеряны.

3. Отключите сценарии при запуске.
Приложение Adobe Bridge может не запуститься или в нем произойдет сбой в случае повреждения сценария запуска. Отключите все сценарии запуска и посмотрите, решит ли это проблему.
В приложении Adobe Bridge выберите пункт меню «Правка» > «Настройка» (Windows) или «Bridge » > «Установки» (Mac OS).
Если Adobe Bridge лучше работает при отключенных сценариях запуска, включайте сценарии по одному или в составе небольших групп, чтобы определить, какой сценарий вызывает проблему.

4. Временно отключите программы, которые сканируют диск или управляют его активностью.
Программы, которые проверяют активность диска или управляют ей, могут конфликтовать с Bridge при записи файлов кэша или подключении к Интернету. Временно отключите эти программы и Adobe Bridge, чтобы посмотреть, по-прежнему ли будут возникать сбои или производительность улучшится.

7. Настройка Adobe Bridge для обработки файлов меньшего размера.
Приложение Adobe Bridge может работать медленнее при обработке файлов большого размера. По умолчанию Adobe Bridge автоматически обрабатывает эскизы размером до 1000 Мбайт. Размер файла можно уменьшить в диалоговом окне «Настройка».

Метаданные — это набор следующих стандартизированных сведений о файле: имя автора, разрешение, цветовое пространство, авторские права и ключевые слова. Например, большинство цифровых фотоаппаратов дописывает в файл изображения некоторые основные сведения, например высоту и ширину изображения, формат файла и время снимка. Метаданные можно использовать для ускорения рабочего процесса, а также для систематизации файлов.
Сведения о стандарте XMP
Метаданные сохраняются по стандарту расширяемой платформы метаданных (XMP), на котором построены приложения Adobe Bridge, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign и Adobe Photoshop. Изменения, внесенные в изображения с помощью приложения Photoshop Camera Raw, сохраняются как метаданные XMP. Стандарт XMP основан на языке XML, в большинстве случаев метаданные хранятся в файле. Если хранить информацию в файле невозможно, то метаданные сохраняются в отдельном файле, который называется сопроводительным файлом. Стандарт XMP упрощает обмен метаданными между приложениями Adobe, а также между различными рабочими процессами при публикации. Например, можно сохранить метаданные одного файла как шаблон, чтобы затем импортировать эти метаданные в другие файлы.
Метаданные, которые хранятся в других форматах (Exif, IPTC (IIM), GPS или TIFF), синхронизируются и описываются с помощью формата XMP, что упрощает их просмотр и управление этими метаданными. Если вы являетесь разработчиком C++ или Java, используйте пакет XMP Toolkit SDK для настройки обработки метаданных и обмена ими. В зависимости от выбранного файла могут отображаться следующие типы метаданных.

IPTC (IIM, устарела)
Отображает метаданные доступные для редактирования, например, информация об авторских правах и описание. Этот набор метаданных скрыт по умолчанию, поскольку он замещается набором IPTC Core . Однако отобразить метаданные IPTC (IIM, устаревшие) можно, выбрав их в разделе установок «Метаданные».
Отображает доступные для редактирования метаданные о файле. Спецификации IPTC Core были разработаны Международным Советом по печати и телекоммуникациям (IPTC) для профессиональной фотографии, в частности для новостей и архивов готовых фотографий.

Данные фотокамеры (Exif)

Любая информация, вводимая в поле, заменяет собой существующие метаданные и применяет новые значения ко всем выбранным файлам.
