Aesmservice platform services initialization failed due to dal error

My current project is stymied because SGX is not initializing properly.

On the notebook in question (details below), it occurred exactly ONCE (out of 1,758 events) in the Event Viewer, SGX/Admin event log that a “Critical” error happened described as “AESMService: SGX is Disabled at AESM Service startup”. Since this only happened once, I don’t see it as highly significant.

However, there are frequent “Warning”s to the effect that “ AESMService: Platform Services initialization failed due to DAL error ”. Most log entries say, “AESMService: Platform Services initializing” OR “AESM Service started”. Unfortunately, it appears to be the case that the most recent entry in the event list is always an initialization failure warning … so SGX seems to be perpetually in a non-operative state, even though the service is listed as running,

Another rare error is this one: “AESMService: White List update failed due to network error”. I expect that could happened when I am offline; if it were a problem when I was connected, I would expect to see this error frequently.

Intel SGX is enabled in the BIOS and set to allocate 128 MB (I notice in the Task Manager that the Intel SGX Application Enclave Services Manager is using between 0.3 MB & 2.5 MB depending on when I look). [No running process has allocated to itself 128 MB of RAM (although arguably SGX RAM isn’t listed here).]

The Windows Device Manager, under “System devices” lists the ‘Intel Software Guard Extensions Device’ (driver 2.5.100.2 dated 9/19/2019) – there are no flags; the device is working properly.

Prior to an Intel driver update, the “Intel SGX Application Enclave Service (AESM)” was shown to be running.

Currently, the “Intel SGX AESM” service is listed as running.

According to the Event Viewer’s SGX/Diagnostic informational entries, the AESM Service PSW vs. is 2.5.101.3 (this is Intel’s latest release, dated 11/22/2019).

Troublesome machine is a Dell XPS 15 9570 (2018) notebook computer with a 59 Hz UHD IPS @ 3840 x 2160 monitor, BIOS 1.15.0 dated 25Dec2019, released 14Jan2020, 32GB DDR4.

The CPU is an 8th gen. Intel Core i7 8750H @ 2.20+ GHz, Coffee Lake chipset, Intel UHD Graphics 630 [driver vs. 25.20.100.7262].

The machine is also equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with Max-Q board, but Intel is the default GPU.

OS: Windows 10 10.0.18362.628 (18362.19h1_release.190318-1202)

[I gather that this = the May 2019 Update, “Version 1903”]

I approached Microsoft about this issue and they were worse than useless. I hope an Intel services expert can guide me towards a solution.

Aesmservice platform services initialization failed due to dal error

You asked two questions in a two-part sentence:

The first question was:

«Could you perhaps share an explanation as to how one would verify whether or not these stacks might be installed»

I answered this by guiding you to System Information, where you verified that the DAL, SGX AESM, and ME driver were indeed installed and running.

Your second question was:

«and also what ‘other’ Intel software the guide is referring to that typically would have pre-installed these stacks?»

I answered this by pointing to you to the full software package for the ME stack. The Intel SGX AESM gets installed by Windows Update.

I still don’t understand what you are trying to resolve. It seems that all of the components are installed and running. You received a critical event notification while the ME software was being updated, which is understandable. After the upgrade, everything was back up and running. Please explain what issue you are having with SGX.

It isn’t clear whether you still have a problem. You wrote that these messages appeared after the initial error message:

AESM Service started. PSW Version: 2.7.100.2

SGX is Enabled at AESM Service startup

White List update requested

White list update request successful from Server, Version: 70.

These messages above make it seem like the problem has resolved itself.

@JesusG_Intel
To date, there hasn’t been a new problem.

In your reply you said:
«These messages above make it seem like the problem has resolved itself».

One point that I omitted in my OP was that the Intel ME driver was seen as an available Windows Update BEFORE I installed the driver from my OEM’s support site. This availability was what tipped me off about an urgent update.
Going forward in the future as new Intel ME drivers become available, what would help prevent this problem from occurring again ?
I did not notice anything about the ME chipset installation package when the ME installer was unbundled that distinguished itself as being a customized DELL driver. Also, the ‘Intel’ ME driver that was previously seen as available in Windows Update had never yet downloaded on my system, so that couldn’t have been a reason for the errors reported from a re-start after installing the driver from the OEM site.

To use Intel® SGX platform service, you need to install a full set of Intel® Management Engine (Intel® ME) software components, which includes Intel® Dynamic Application Loader Host Interface Service (Intel® DAL Host Interface Service). If you install Intel® ME driver only, Intel® SGX platform service is not available.

Typically, the Intel DAL stack and Intel ME stack are pre-installed with other Intel software on a platform. However, if you receive an error that Intel SGX platform service is unavailable, install the appropriate Intel DAL stack and/or Intel ME stack.

Unfortunately, since this is a Dell platform and Dell’s drivers you must go to Dell for further diagnosis if the problem persists. I know that all the component names start with «Intel,» but there is nothing Intel can do. Dell controls the platform and the drivers.

As for the Additional Dependencies that you cited from the Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX) SDK for Windows* OS Installation Guide, I opened a ticket with Dell’s internal software team. They’re investigating my inquiry on whether the Dell package for the Intel Management Engine Driver includes a full set of Intel® Management Engine (Intel® ME) software components, specifically, the Intel® Dynamic Application Loader Host Interface Service (Intel® DAL Host Interface Service).

To paraphrase from the installation guide, it stated that in order to “use” Intel SGX services, the full set of Intel ME software components (which include the DAL Stack, and the Intel ME stack) must be installed. It also says that typically they (the DAL stack and ME stack) are both pre-installed with “other” Intel software on a platform. Could you perhaps share an explanation as to how one would verify whether or not these stacks might be installed, and also what “other” Intel software the guide is referring to that typically would have pre-installed these stacks?

My platform performed the Online Installation. The BIOS was configured to “enabled” for SGX. It was previously factory set as «Software Controlled». This setting change to enable SGX last year in August had prompted Windows Update to install the SGX PSW and SGX base driver automatically.

This is basically why I changed the SGX setting in the BIOS to enabled. The Intel architecture aims to provide confidentiality to security sensitive computation and protecting against subverted or a malicious OS by leveraging Intel hardware and establishing a secure ‘container’ e.g., enclave.

The Intel Software Guard Extensions(Intel SGX) SDK for Windows* OS Release Notes provides system requirement and fixes but does not offer additional information to debug problems.

As for contacting my OEM, I will tell you and I’m speaking on behalf of many users who have personal computers with various Dell models. I contacted Dell’s technical support last year in 2019 when I enabled the setting in the BIOS. I had a paid account for technical support with their top resolution experts. Not a single person possessed enough knowledge about SGX where they were able to offer any support. They admittedly said that within Dell, training on Software Guard Extensions was non- existent. I spoke with three technicians over the phone who referred me to Intel. Before I hear back regarding the full set of software components for the ME package, I’m not exactly going to get my hopes up high.

  2. Windows 10 – Intel SGX AESM Platform Services initialization fails due to DAL error on XPS 15 9570

May have worked when the notebook came out of the box; unfortunately I have never had occasion to inspect SGX activity or the Intel Management Engine before.

The file vs. of LMS.exe is 1928.12.0.1287, dated 8/5/2019. It is reasonable that this would be a recent version, as I recently installed Dell’s Intel Management Engine package vs. 1932.12.0.1298_A04.

I wish I could inspect some other Windows 10 machines to see if they have
“AESMService: Platform Services initialization failed due to DAL error”
    events.

Thanks for looking into this for me.

  3. Windows 10 – Intel SGX AESM Platform Services initialization fails due to DAL error on XPS 15 9570

When I run the “CyberLink Ultra HD Blu-ray Advisor” vs. 2.0.3201.0 I receive error # 21205: “The required Intel SGX … wasn’t started.” This renders Ultra HD Blu-ray discs unplayable.

    I have a Dell XPS 15 9570 (2018) notebook computer with a 59 Hz UHD IPS @ 3840 x 2160 monitor, BIOS 1.15.0 dated 25Dec2019, released 14Jan2020, 32GB DDR4.

Intel SGX is enabled in the BIOS and set to allocate 128 MB
(I notice in the Task Manager that the Intel SGX Application Enclave Services Manager is using between 0.3 MB & 2.5 MB depending on when I look).

SERVICE STATUS – On this notebook, it occurred exactly ONCE (out of 1,758 events) in the Event Viewer, SGX/Admin event log that a “Critical” error happened described
as “AESMService: SGX is Disabled at AESM Service startup”. Since this only happened once, I don’t see it as highly significant.

However, there are frequent “Warning”s to the effect that “AESMService: Platform Services initialization failed due to DAL
    error
    ”. {DAL = Dynamic Application Loader
(the DAL HIS is installed by the Intel Management Engine installer)}Most
log entries say, “AESMService: Platform Services initializing”
    OR “AESM Service started”.
Unfortunately, it appears to be the case that the most recent entryin the event list is
typically an initialization failure warning …
so I seem to be perpetually in a non-operative state, even though the service is listed as running,

ACTIONS – I went to the BIOS and disabled SGX, restarted, tested, went back to the BIOS, re-enabled SGX, retested, all to no avail.

I keep my system updated and nothing appears to be amiss with the Intel Management Engine. Nevertheless, I downloaded and did a repair installation of Dell’s package “Intel Management Engine Components Installer” vs. 1932.12.0.1298 (A04) dated 9Aug19.
The “CyberLink Ultra HD Blu-ray Advisor” still fails with error # 21205 and I still get
“AESMService: Platform Services initialization failed due to DAL error”
    events.

As this point, I am aware of no additional steps I can take. I would have expected that by 2018 issues with Intel SGX (and DAL HIS) would have been sorted.

I notice from the forum that when Windows 10 build 17083 was released, suddenly SGX was no longer operable for many users. Naturally, I wonder if my problem is a Windows issue as well.

I purchased this painfully top-dollar Microsoft-based Ultra HD notebook with every expectation that I would be able to play Ultra HD video on it, but I am stymied.

    What should I do now?

  4. AESMService: Platform Services initialization failed due to DAL error

Windows 10 – Intel SGX AESM Platform Services initialization fails due to DAL error on XPS 15 9570

I believe you could go ahead and install the Intel Software Guard Extensions Platform Software driver from Dell without uninstalling anything.

I don’t have a contact at Microsoft for this but I might suggest to post on the Intel SGX forum as the issue involves that platform:

    https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-s…

As I mentioned before the issue could be something blocking, for instance a network issue as suggested by this warning in the Event Application Log:

AESMService — AESMService: White List update failed due to network error

This link mentions the network requirements:

    https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-s…

In the following link from Cyberlink for Error 21205 states

«4. Ensure PowerDVD is not blocked/redirected by antivirus/firewall software protection, and allow PowerDVD to access Internet connection for Intel SGX online verification/activation.»

    https://www.cyberlink.com/support/faq-content.d…

Consider temporarily uninstalling Avast (use Windows built-in security software) or check that Avast in not blocking SGX.

Недавно решил обновить комплектующие компьютера. Но к сожалению, критует систему и перезагружается компьютер.

Kernel Power 41 / AESMService 108

I have updated Windows for the latest version 1709 (17763.1). After the first run, I saw a critical error in the Event Viewer. In Services, AESMService is shown as running.
Please see attached screens.
My mainboard: MSI B250M MORTAR, CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz, VGA: NVIDIA GeForce 1050 Ti.
I was trying to reinstall the drivers Intel Chipset Driver 10.1.1.45, Intel Management Engine Driver 1.9.100.41172, Intel Software Guard Extensions 1.9.100.41172, but the error still persists.
Can you please help me? Thank you.

Both your CPU and your motherboard support SGX (per the MSI web site), so it appears you have not enabled SGX in the BIOS yet. First, make sure you have the latest BIOS installed for your motherboard ( https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B250M-MORTAR#down-bios) and then see the manual for how to enable SGX (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B250M-MORTAR#down-manual)

Here is what I understand is going on, can you please confirm:

1) When SGX is set in BIOS to «SW Controlled», then you get the two screenshots you attached in the first post.

If so, this is expected. You will need to use an SGX App that requests the service to enable SGX, then reboot. When the systems reboots, BIOS will enable SGX.

Or, you can reboot into BIOS and set it to enabled.

2) If you choose to enable it yourself in BIOS, then Windows 1809 will bluescreen (please confirm as you said Oct 2018 1709, but it should be 1809, right?)

I have not seen reports of bluescreens for 1809, but it’s possible something changed in the OS that would cause this.

When you said you solved it with a clean installation of Windows, which version of Windows10 were you installing? 1803? 1709?

After you saw the bluescreen, were you able to save the crashdump?

Did you build your PC yourself or is it from an OEM?

@fqiu1 Happy New Year!

I am going to try some debug tool (like mitmproxy), but just for curiosity and just wondering if tcpdump will give some insights to the protocol when calling sgx_ra_get_msg1. From the packet capture below, it seems there’s no problem when we are communicating with the service: ps.sgx.trustedservices.intel.com. Also, there seems to be an Expect: 100-continue that did not continue further at the end of the packet capture. There seems to be a handshake towards the end where our server machine did not reply to. I hope this can give some insight to the issue.

Thanks a lot!

Kind Regards,
Rodel
