Vmware an error occurred while communicating with the remote host
I have a problem with my VC2.5 and ESX3.5.
50% of all actions results in «An error occurred while communicating with the remote host». The 2nd try mostly works, sometimes i have to do another try.
I start an action, the host disconnects and a few seconds later the host is back and i can give it another try. The error occures on every host i have.
Can anyone help me, please?

Yes, I did remove «Converter» through add/remove programs. I removed both the «Converter» and the «Converter Agent». I don’t recall if I rebooted the machine or not. I don’t think you need to. Anyway I hope this helps resolves your issue. Please let us know your results. Thanks for your support.

thanks for the information in this thread. I wrote to the vmware support but without solving this problem. I hope to fix the problem with the uninstallation of Converter and Update Manager. At the moment everything works fine. I’ll report too.

I have bad news. The Problem isn’t fixed. When I want to migrate on VM to another host the action stopped with teh An error occurred . message. When I then restart the Virtual Center Service on the VC host everything works fine. How long it will work? Its sporadically.

I was having this issue as well and here is ths steps I had to do to get it working.
1.logged into Vcenter and disconnected each of my cluster nodes
2. Removed each node after the disconnect completed
3. Logged into each cluster node seperately and ran to validate the vcenter agent was running service vmware-vpxa status
4. Stop the vcenter agent service vmware-vpxa stop
5. locate the vcenter agetn version and package to remove rpm -qa | grep -i vpxa
6. Remove teh vcenter agent rpm -e VMware-vpxa-4.0.0-208111
7. Restart the vmware management service service mgmt-vmware restart
8. Log into each ESX host by IP just to validate the management service came up and your able to view your VMs
9. Log into the Vcenter server and restart the VMware VirtualCenter Server windows service
10. Log into Vcenter from the Vsphere client and readd your nodes to the cluster
11. I had to renable HA on each node in order to clear all alarms after they were initially added
These steps fixed the issue for me

We are having the same issue here — vsphere 4.1 esxi hosts and vc4. All patches as of last week applied. System was upgraded from 3.x.
Problem include: connect host in to VC, power operations on VMs, and VM migrations.
Now not sure what triggered the issues — but two things happen 1) New version of Trend AV client installed onto the VC, and the SQL server hosting the VCDB when down (not clean shutdown).
I thought the problems was only limited to 4 hosts that were powered down for datacenter power work been done. All 4 hosts and hosts VMs powered down cleanly.
Then I found this is is effecting all hosts connected to the VC.
I can connect the VI client to the 4 hosts that was downed directly to start the critical VMs needed for Monday start of business.
I’ve opened a SR with VMWare yesterday — but need to wait until Monday as only have Basic support.

Host disconnecting from Vcenter while migrating kernal port to new switch
I’m just getting started with VMware and I’m running into a problem.
For reference I’m using the CBT Nuggets videos for Vsphere 5.5 to walk me through learning this.
The basic setup is this:
I have a Esxi 5.5 free host where I nested the following
Domain controller
VCenter Server
3 ESXI 5.5 Hosts
I’ve got the hosts added to Vceneter and it’s working pretty well up until this point.
The current video wants me to migrate the management kernel port from one standard switch to a newly created one.
Here’s a screenie:
However when I try I get an error stating that:
«An error occurred while communicating with the remote host
Network configuration change disconnected the host ‘esxi1.domain.local’ from the vcenter server and has been rolled back’
Cause: A change in network configuration disconnected the host ‘esxi1.domain.local’ from the Vcenter Server. The change has been rolled BACK
Does anyone have any idea how I can resolve this?

Is the physical NIC plugged into an appropriately configured switch port (correct VLAN etc)? What are the steps they are giving you to move it? You should be able to move it.
Brand Representative for VMware
I agree with Jfrapp in that you should be able to move it, there must be something in the switch port that you have that physical NIC plugged into.
Just a note as well, if I read this right, you are nesting ESXi within ESXi, right? That is never a best practice and I wouldn’t suggest doing anything like that in a production environment. For some learning, this can work OK, but you will run into issues that you will never run into in a regular production environment. Things can get complicated pretty quickly when you nest hypervisors.
Let us know how it turns out!
Yeah I figured it out, because of the nested environment (yes it’s just for testing and learning), I needed to enable promiscuous mode on everything. Basically anything going out was getting dropped, this also effected how VMs where connecting to the network and my ISCSI box.
The main host where everything was nested only had 2 physical nics, the five in each nested host where virtual so I’m sure that had a lot to do with it as well.
Everything is working well enough to get through the rest of the materials and labs I have left.
I have been running into a lot of issues that wouldn’t happen in production but at least it’s making me dig deeper into the software.
Thanks for the help.
Brand Representative for VMware
Glad you got it working Randy!
i had similliar instance ,my case was with 2 nics of diff network on dvswitch ,
actual issue with error is with nic not mapped to correct network or vlan ,
my case was we were connecting/attaching 2 nics of diff vlan on one dvswitch there by not able to migrate and also unable to ping the new vkernel created inside the dvswitch
(the reason we created a new dvswitch is to make that secondary and migrate , thinking that shoudl address the error it was reporting that management network will be lost, however creating new vmkernel for management did not help on dvswitch as it was not abel to communicate to outside )
later we noticed the 2 nics that was connected to dvswitch had isues where one of the vmnic which is vmnic 1 was on diff vlan , we connected the correct vlan holding nic which was vmnic 7 , post which we were able to migrate the vmk form vswitch

Vmware an error occurred while communicating with the remote host
I started a svmotion and part way through (about 48% according to vCenter Server) the vCenter server reported the above error. Yet it appears that the data transfer is still going on the ESXi host. The three pieces of evidence that it is still going are :
1. The storage array’s (source and destination) show i/o at a rate that is consistent with the start of the svmotion; 80MB/s read on the source and 160MB/s write on the destination,
2. The date/time stamps on the vmdk files on the destination datastore are still being updated,
3. The vmware.log file on the source datastore is being updated with these messages:
2012-08-27T17:31:31.661Z| Worker#0| Disk copy done for scsi0:8.
2012-08-28T00:10:38.773Z| Worker#0| Disk copy done for scsi0:6.
2012-08-28T01:57:21.622Z| Worker#0| Disk copy done for scsi0:5.
2012-08-28T07:45:58.863Z| Worker#0| Disk copy done for scsi0:4.
2012-08-28T14:16:53.699Z| Worker#0| Disk copy done for scsi0:3.
So the vCenter Server thinks the task is failed, but the ESXi host performing the task has not aborted/failed.
1. Is it possible to ‘reconnect’ the vCenter Server to the ongoing svmotion?
2. Is it possible to safely stop the svmotion on the ESXi host?
3. Are there connection timeout values that can be adjusted on the vCenter Server so this loss of comms does not happen again?
4. What happens if I do nothing and let the ESXi host complete the svmotion?
4.1 Can I delete the files on the destination datastore,
4.2 Can I delete the defunct duplicate vm guest entry in the vCenter Server inventory.
ESXi Enterprise Plus, v5.0U1, build 768111
vCenter Server 5.0 U1b, build 804277
Storage Array : Nexsan E60 on iscsi SAN
Storage HBA : Hardware independent Emulex OCE10102
Hosts : Dell PowerEdge R720, x2
I have opened an SR with vmware, but I am hoping that the collective intelligence here will come up with some answers faster than tech support.

you should be able to delete the desintaion files but a deplicate vm entry shouldnt have come up.

Well I’ll never get to find out the answers to my questions because the svmotion eventually failed at the ESXi host. From the vm’s vmware.log file:

This leaves the vCenter Server in a more-or-less normal state and with a correct(ish) view of the vm inventory. The only niggle was the duplicate entry in the inventory which turned into an ‘orphaned’ state. I simply removed it from inventory.
So I will be retrying this svmotion with two changes :
1. I will move the guest vm to a lightly loaded ESXi host to avoid the ‘out of memory’ error condition. The vmware kb states that this was a problem with ESX 4.x and was resolved in a patch. Looks like it has come back to ESXi 5.
2. I will move the vmdk files individually, one at a time, rather than the whole set at once.

Question

Hi all,
I have two environments running Windows Server 2008 Web Edition /w SP2, IIS 7 and .NET framework 3.5. One is a physical server and the other is a virtual machine under Hyper-V. They are running identical web applications. Sporadically throughout the day on the virtual machine environment photo uploads will hang after a few seconds of uploading and I will receive the error in the subject. Exception trace is as follows:
[COMException — Incorrect function. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070001)]

at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)Does anyone know what would cause my virtual environment to throw these errors while the physical machine won’t? Connection rates are very similar on successful photo uploads, and other than this error there is no way to tell from the client side which you are connected to. On the VM I’ve disabled the advanced features on the virtual NIC which are incompatible (receive window autotuning, TCP offloading and congestion provider) which seemed to reduce the amount of times the error occurs, but it is still happening 10-15 times a day (against 2000 or so requests). There are no other VMs on the host and very little load on it at any time.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

TCP Task Offloading options of the NIC driver should be set at the physicla NIC level (the nic of the host that the External virtual network is using).
Be sure that you are not disabling chimney and thinking that you are disabling Task Offloading.
In the settings of the driver are options with ‘offloading’ in the name — these are the options to turn off.
Disable Power managment on the phsycial NIC (some drivers turn this on).
Try a physical Intel NIC (the least problematic of all with Hyper-V)
Check that the ICs in the VM are equal to the host.
check for other issues with the VM such as resource spiking with CPU or disk IO or anything else that might cause a hang.

I’m getting this error on my web service:
An error occurred while communicating with the remote host. The error code is 0x80070001
The weird thing is that the CPU and memory usage on the server is not high.

More information
Inner Exception Message: The handle is invalid. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070006 (E_HANDLE))
Very Important
This is only happened with a web application, but if I used a web site, nothing happened (no error).
And after a lot of research I think this error is caused by the web.config file.
The logs of a web application running in IIS include an HttpException with an inner COMException and the message “An error occurred while communicating with the remote host. The error code is 0x80070032.” What’s going on and how can we fix it?
Before I go into the details, here’s some bad new: there could be many other causes of this error. You can see the symptoms of the error described in this article outlined below. Other symptoms may indicate a different cause for the same exceptions. For example, here, https://github.com/SignalR/SignalR/issues/1790 and https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5564862/the-remote-host-closed-the-connection-the-error-code-is-0x800704cd are other causes for this error.
Symptoms of error code 0x80070032
- The error occurs after each app pool recycle or server restart.
- Additionally and optionally: the error occurs periodically (e.g. each 21 minutes).
- The error comes after a request from 127.0.0.1 (additional logging must be added to see this).
- There are no corresponding IIS logs, i.e. there is no request logged at the time the error occurred.
- The application log contains this exception:

In my case, the error code 0x80070032 occurred every 21 minutes…
…which incidentally correlated to the idle time-out configured in the web app’s application pool:
So, what’s wrong?
Two things are happening here:
- Periodic exceptions in application log: The app pool is configured to time-out after 20 minutes, but also to be always on (see the setting called Start Mode, it’s set to AlwaysRunning). This causes IIS to make a request to the app each time it times out.
- Exceptions when recycling the app pool: The app pool’s Start Mode setting is set to AlwaysRunning which instructs IIS to make a request to the app as soon as it gets restarted.
In both cases IIS does not wait for any response from the app. Instead, the channel is closed and this is what causes the exception in the end.
And these are the possible fixes:
- Periodic exceptions in application log: If the app is always supposed to be running, then set the Idle time-out to 0 to deactivate it. Otherwise, allow to app to sleep without being woken up by setting the Start Mode to OnDemand.
- Exceptions when recycling the app pool: If it’s ok for the first user request to take a bit longer to wake up the app, just set the Start Mode setting to OnDemand. It’s a bit more complicated than that if the auto-start behavior is required. In this case, you must edit the application logger to actively ignore that error.

It was a bizarre situation with the vCenter High Availability feature deployment and my VCHA Deployment failed with NFS Datastore configuration. We have been working with many VCHA deployments and this issue appeared when there are NFS datastore configured and used to deploy the vCenter Server cluster. If you are not sure with the VMware VCHA deployment please read my previous article.
Symptoms Appeared In The Deployment
We used VCHA simple deployment method and it didn’t show us an error when we were running the wizard, but operation failed with the below error
An error occurred while communicating with the remote host
With my own experience there were few issues while the Simple deployment and we were able to fix them with the Advanced Deployment, which means cloning the vCenter server manually. Even this time it didn’t successful and below error appeared while it deleting the temporary snapshot and vCenter ended up with an unexpected reboot
What Was The Issue Behind This And How To Fix It
It was because of the NFS 3 datasore and this was intended behavior with this version.
If you are enabling VCHA feature with the NFS datastore you have to use NFS v4 as the datastore
NFS v3 has 40 seconds lock timeout and, it had been identified as the limitation for this VCHA configuration. But you can manually clone the vCenter Virtual Machine to the same host and it will eliminate the 40 seconds lock time out issue. However, NFS v3 is not the optimal configuration for VCHA and there can be many issues after the deployment. There for the recommendation is to use NFS v4
You can find the VMware documentation for this from here.
