I’m a complete novice to Ubuntu and like it a lot from first impression but I haven’t gotten very far since getting it up and running several days ago. I loaded 12.10 on an old e-Machine that someone threw in the trash and everything seems to be running OK except when I go to install any software (whether CD or downloaded from the Internet) I get the following message:

An error occurred while loading the archive.

«An error occurred while loading the archive»

Hey all when I try to open a file that I have downloaded the Archive Manager window pops up and an error message states, «An error occurred while loading the archive.» Any ideas on how to fix this? Thank you very much!!

Re: «An error occurred while loading the archive»

Is the file indeed supposed to be an archive?

Do you mind if we use the terminal? The text interface is easier if we communicate in forum posts. Try

You can even type file in your terminal and drag the file into it. That should tell us what kind of file Ubuntu thinks it is.

The next step will be trying the terminal to unpack the file, but we have to know first what kind of file it is.

Re: «An error occurred while loading the archive»

I’m not sure how to write like I’m typing in the terminal, but I believe I’ve figured it out. I was trying to open a .exe file when I guess, for whatever reason, Linux uses those tar.gz files. Thank you!!

Re: «An error occurred while loading the archive»

.exe files are Windows executables that are useless on Linux – with a few exceptions. Sometimes you may have success running .exe files using wine, some .exe files are .NET stuff you can run using mono and some .exe files are auto-extracting zip archives and the archive manager can handle those. That’s why the archive manager popped up.

Error occurred while loading the archive

I had been running a dual boot windows XP & Ubuntu. Graboid worked in both systems. I have now got rid of windows, upgraded to 10.10
I installed wine, winetricks & dotnet20, but when I click on my downloaded Graboid.exe file I get the following error:
Command line output
Archive: /home/etsah57/.wine/GraboidVideoSetup-2.03b-Complete.exe
[/home/etsah57/.wine/GraboidVideoSetup-2.03b-Complete.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/etsah57/.wine/GraboidVideoSetup-2.03b-Complete.exe or
/home/etsah57/.wine/GraboidVideoSetup-2.03b-Complete.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/etsah57/.wine/GraboidVideoSetup-2.03b-Complete.exe.ZIP, period

I am at a loss as to what to do.

Re: Error occurred while loading the archive

its trying to open the .exe with the archive manager (wrong file association)

right click the exe > open with other application > use custom command «wine» (without quotes) >> and check ‘remember this application for. ‘

Re: Error occurred while loading the archive

Thanks, that worked, but now it does not recognise my download folder
In Graboid I have told it to download to:
c:Program FilesGraboidCompleted
I get the error message that the folder doesn’t exist, but it does.
Is this because the folder is in etsah57 .wine drive_c Program Files Graboid Completed
How do I tell Graboid this is the file?

Re: Error occurred while loading the archive

I have tried both of the following paths, and neither works
homeetsah57.winedrive_cProgram/FilesGraboidCompleted
/home/etsah57/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Graboid/Completed
How do I write a correct file path in Ubuntu

Re: Error occurred while loading the archive

according to the wine appdb, it looks like graboid would work.
‘garbage’ is the lowest rating an application gets. it means that «Application cannot be installed, does not start, or starts but has so many errors that it is nearly impossible to use it«

Re: Error occurred while loading the archive

I checked the site you quoted, it was for a much earlier version of the program. I have used the latest version of the program very successfully. I now have it installed and running in Ubuntu 10.10, but it doesn’t like the download path, and I’ve tried a number of different versions of a path but it still doesn’t recognise the path. Ubuntu doesn’t seem to like my c: drive or d: drive and that is what it seems Graboid is looking for. I was hoping for help in understanding how to write a download path

Re: Error occurred while loading the archive

I tried as you said. but it says «Error launching installer». What would I do now??

«An error occurred while loading the archive» when extracting Kali Linux.7z on Ubuntu

I’m downloading Kali Linux 2016.1 for Virtual Box, which only had a torrented .7z file available, but I’m not able to extract it with Archive manager or p7zip.

After installing sudo apt-get install p7zip-full I tried these two commands:

The error I get is:

The path of the file is Home/Downloads/Kali-Linux-2016.1-vbox-i686/Kali-Linux-2016.1-vbox-i686.7z

1 Answer 1

When you run a terminal command giving it a file as input, the file must exist. If the file is in your current directory, it is enough to give the file name ( command file ). If, however, the file is in another directory, you need to give its path ( command /path/to/file ).

In your case, you have saved the archive in $HOME/Downloads/Kali-Linux-2016.1-vbox-i686/Kali-Linux-2016.1-vbox-i686.7z , so you need to do one of:

Use the file’s path

Move into the directory before running the command:

This popped up on Archive Manager when I tried to run an .exe. Can anyone help me a little bit and explain to me how to fix this. I would like to get this install working.

Re: An error occurred while loading the archive

Firstly, you can’t run an exe file without wine or another «emulation» package to do so.

Secondly, it seems fromthe error that this .exe is possibly a self extracting zip file, and it may also possibly need another part of the total in order to work at all.

More info is needed about the file; where did it came from, what it is supposed to be, ie, what do you think it should end up doing, and lastly, do you fully trust it, or the producer of it?

OK, I see it is a windows game. Do you know if it will run in wine or another of the «emulators», eg crossover, cedega or other?

Question information

What does the app do? From the name it sounds like a CD burner app of which there are LOADS available in the repos.

What is the app for?

You are trying to run a Windows executable on Ubuntu/Linux.

If you want to run Windows programs on Linux there are several options available to you.

There is Wine, which might let you run the program as if it was a Linux program, and there are the various virtual machine options.
Google is your friend here.

Seeing that this program is called ISOBurner, you might like to know that burning ISOs is directly supported in Ubuntu — just right click the ISO file and select «Write to Disc. «.

I’ve always had difficulty doing things with WINE; and most of the time, not getting WINE to function at all (on Ubuntu). Maybe I’m just dumb. But what I have easily used to run windoze on Linux is VMware Player. I’ve had a fully functioning XP inside of Ubuntu and at one point (on a computer I no longer have), had Ubuntu, OPENsuse, and PCLinuxOS simultaneously installed on VMware Player 3.1.1 on a windoze 7 host.

A python-vm-builder package is available in Ubuntu Software Center and in Synaptic Package Manager that will build you a ready-to-use virtual machine specifically for Ubuntu. You’ll a more recent computer with plenty of ram, though.

Sure but running a Windows VM reuires running Windows aswell as Ubuntu which is even more bloated than just Windows. It also requires purchase of a Windows license and install media. All in all not worth it if there are open equivelants to the desired effect. Sure sometimes it’s needed but often there are simpler/ sleeker solutions.

If you still want to try running the program with Wine (I recommend using the normal, built-in tools though):

1. Open the Software Center
2. Type wine and install ‘wine’
3. Right click the executable (program) you want to run and select «Open With» and then «Wine Windows Program Loader»
4. Rejoice

Considering the file is called ISOBurner.exe. I am suspecting it is a CD burning app so banging on about Wine is ridiculouys as there are fine CD burning applications in the repositorys and Brasero is part of a standard desktop install. ISO is a defacto standard file so will be usable there.

Why are you banging on about Wine? Just because the user wants to run a windows app doesn’t mean you should instantly igently.suggest Wine. If you look at the file name and what is is intended to achieve then you can answer more intelli

actionparsnip, was this directed at me?
If so, please see my previous answer where I pretty much said what you repeated here — minus the Brasero info.
I mentioned Wine again because the answers turned to virtual machines and Wine, and for a user that still has Windows executables lying around that could be useful information.

Omar Jayag, in case you found the various answers confusing, just right click the ISO file and select «Write to Disc. » or open Brasero (Applications- >Sound & Video->Brasero) if you want to do more fancy disc burning.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Omar Jayag for more information if necessary.

As I don’t use GUI for archive extraction much, I don’t know since when this error I am getting:

An error occurred while loading the archive.

This error I get while trying to open an ordinary Zip and / or 7z archives, but I care only about Zip in this question.

I am able to open tar.bz2 and tar.gz files, though.

As a side note: This is particularly annoying as I started using Thunderbird for mail and so I intend to open all attachments in GUI.

OS and DE: Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 64-bit.

Version of Archive manager for GNOME:

/usr/bin/file-roller --version
file-roller 3.16.5, Copyright © 2001-2012 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Example:

A file downloaded from GitHub from this page as Zip: TrueColour.md

For convenience renamed to truecolor.zip.

file truecolor.zip

says it is an ordinary Zip archive:

truecolor.zip: Zip archive data, at least v1.0 to extract
file-roller truecolor.zip

run from terminal says the above error message with no output to the terminal.

Sure though, I am able to decompress it with:

unzip truecolor.zip

with output:

Archive: truecolor.zip
f8e6e08a0f0d3ad09e599a4f17edc010d38e4ec8
   creating: 8346728-f8e6e08a0f0d3ad09e599a4f17edc010d38e4ec8/
  inflating: 8346728-f8e6e08a0f0d3ad09e599a4f17edc010d38e4ec8/TrueColour.md

EDIT1:

I have managed to get some, possibly useful, debug info using:

strace -t -f file-roller truecolor.zip 2> fileroller-open-zip-strace

As it is rather lengthy, it won’t fit into Pastebin, so I have compressed it, SHA-256 hash follows:

4f09bc1f16c0e618cfd6937946db23a18be8e5e1fb1b8d4930ead49af5e77abb

You may download it from my hosting:

https://www.vlastimilburian.cz/fileroller-open-zip-strace.bz2

The above file has been deleted.

If someone knows what to look for in the strace‘s output, I am sure he / she would find the relevant part, but I sadly don’t know what to look for.

EDIT2:

Latest available version on GitHub, compiled:

./file-roller --version
file-roller 3.22.2, Copyright © 2001-2012 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

run from terminal:

./file-roller ~/Downloads/truecolor.zip

shows the very same error message:

An error occurred while loading the archive.

(xfce, KDE, cinnamon, mate) 4.

An error occurred while loading the archive.

Command line output: tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

Happened while I tried to install tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-1.1.4-dev-en-US.tar.gz.

Question information

Why not just install tor from the repository? It would be much much easier, and is the recommended way to do it.

If you are sure you don’t want to use the repo, then try the following:

Can you open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and cut and paste the following command (it may take a while to complete); this will tell us the type of file

find ./ -mount -name tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-1.1.4-dev-en-US.tar.gz -exec file {} ;
find ./ -mount -name tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-1.1.4-dev-en-US.tar.gz -exec md5sum {} ;

note each of those commands is on one line — just cut and paste the whole chunk.

I copied and pasted the commands as whole chunk into the terminal window, pressed enter, but nothing happened.

Did you save the file to your hard drive, or did you just «open» it? If you just opened it, try saving the file. I suspect that you are attempting to open a file that is not a proper archive

I downloaded it today again and was able to install it. Thank you.
