Warning: An error occured while opening one or more files.

So recently I tried using Vegas Pro 17 with AVI files but it didn’t seem to work. I learned that I needed a codec pack for them to work, which I installed. Now, it works 50% of the times and when it doesn’t, I get an error message saying «Warning: An error occured while opening one or more files. The file is most likely corrupted or of an unknown format.» The problem is not with my computer since my computer reads it as an AVI file, but Vegas doesn’t for some reason. Does anyone know how to fix this? It’s getting really annoying, I have to re-shoot my video all over again for it to work.

You may have done less good than harm by installing an invasive codec pack on an editing machine. Suggest you roll it back to a saved system backup and start proper troubleshooting.

Now, please read this post thoroughly, including #12.

There are hundreds of different codecs possible in the AVI container, and that’s where we need to start. Thanks!

Alright, thanks! I removed my previous Codec and downloaded GoPro Quik Studio to get Cineform VFW (.avi) as specified in #4 of the second link you showed me. Now I don’t know how to put the Codec into Vegas, could you help me?

Hello, thank you for replying so quickly! Sadly, that’s not what I’m looking for! This tutorial helps for the rendering part of a video(when it’s done editing), but what I need is help for the part where I try to put my video into the project in order to edit it! Even though I installed Cineform Codec, I still get the error message! Thanks in advance!

Well, if you follow the tutorial, you would take the current file you have, follow the instructions, and «render out» to a new Cineform .avi file, able to be read by Vegas Pro or Vegas Movie Studio. Essentially, you are «Transcoding» the file, and enabling it to be used as an «Intermediate», or «new source» file.

Just because you have the Cineform codec (or others such as Grass Valley HQ/HQX, Avid DNxHD/DNxHR, Magic YUV, etc.), does not make what your file is. The camcorder, camera, PC Capture software, Capture Card, etc., would need to have the requisite Container and CODEC available to use with the file you have recorded.

Example: My Canon 80D «Records» in an .mov or .mp4 container. For the .mov, it captures the recording in an ALL-I (non-compressed) format per this MediaInfo:

Or, I can use a slightly higher compression .mp4 file. Same with GoPro Hero’s, or either of my Sony AX-33/53 cameras (uses XAVC-S, and I have bit rate set for 100 Mbps @3840×2160 29.970P what I typically shoot).

On the tutorial, he puts his video on Vegas before rendering it with cineform. My problem is that I can’t get it in Vegas at first! When I try to add the .avi file in Vegas, I just get that error message! Should I use another Video Editor?

«an error occured while opening one or more files»

I’m having a hard time importing various video-files in Movie Studio Platinum 15.0.

They are not uncommon formats as far as I understand; .avi and .mpeg4, and they play normally in vlc-player. I tried converting to different other types of common variations of avi and mpeg4 in Any Video Convertor. But I keep having problems. Is there some codec-pack that I can install to solve this?

Yes, avi and mp4 are common but they are containers and it’s the codecs used inside we need details of. Avoid installing TP codec packs as they can interfere with Vegas’s codecs.

Vegas pro ошибка an error occurred while opening one or more files

Various recording software may use a different encoding process / different codecs, and some may not be quite compatible with the Movie Maker software.

Some options you may try are;

* Convert the source video (I often use something like the HandBrake utility, which works well and is free: https://handbrake.fr/ ), for example, convert it from AVI into MP4 format (if the video is already in MP4, running it through a convertor utility still may work though), then try the converted video with the Movie Maker software and hopfully it will be compatible then.

Or, if I recall correctly, and as you mention about you use Litecam HD, I think that has an option to convert a video (you can access from the Preview mode) it makes from avi over into mp4 format (though I’m not sure if the Litecam convertor would make an mp4 compatible with the Movie Maker software — worth a try though).

* Find and install codecs which may help resolve the issue, but this is a hit-or-miss; installing codec packs might work, but then again it might not. If you want to give that a try, I might suggest to download and install the basic K-lite codec pack from here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

* Experiment with using different output settings / options with your recording software. This may or may not work though.

* Use a different recording software that will (hopefully) make videos compatible with the Movie Maker software.

I just got this same error also: The file is an unsupported format. I’ve been working on a documentary for 8 months, having started in Vegas 11, and upgrading to 17 mid-way through. I have over a dozen filename.veg files in my backup folder. The ones from earlier open up in 17.0 (they were likely the ones created in Vegas 11). But recent versions (and their corresponding veg.bak files) will not open in 17, altho they were created in 17. There are no updates for 17 currently (i’m on v17.0 Build 452) and I haven’t updated much on my PC, except for Windows 10 mandatory updates. I’m wondering if something occurred there……..I am currently screwed since weeks worth of work is inaccessible. Ugh.

I found my solution: I had recently changed a setting under INTERNAL PREFERENCES: I’d changed Enable So4 Compound Reader for AVC/M2TS from TRUE to FALSE, upon somebody’s rec. to help with crashing issues when rendering. I changed this back to the default TRUE and my most recent .veg opened up. Interesting. jmm

Please start a new thread and post the details requested above.

Sony Vegas Pro makes it easy to import and edit movies, images and music for creating your next video or audio masterpiece. However, it will be a frustrating thing if you have problems of importing video files to Sony Vegas, especially the video files are the so common MP4 files. Though MP4 is a listed supported format by Sony Vegas, many people are having problems of importing MP4 to Sony Vegas. The latest Sony Vegas 18 still won’t solve “Sony Vegas Won’t import/read/open/accept some MP4 files”.

Known issues when Sony Vegas dealing with MP4 files

  • Sony Vegas Pro does not accept .mp4 format recorded on JVC GY HM 700;
  • Sony Vegas doesn’t recognize the mp4 files outputs from GoPro HD Hero
  • When importing a .MP4 file recorded by Hauppauge HD PVR into Sony Vegas. Error message pops up: “Warning: An error occurred while one or more files. un unexpected error has occurred.”
  • Sony Vegas shows black screen when playing MP4 files muxed from H.264;
  • Audio and video are out of sync with MP4 playback in Sony Vegas.

How to Solve Sony Vegas can’t Import MP4 files

The headache issues with Sony Vegas dealing MP4 files may causes by hardware issue or codec issue. First make sure your computer is powerful enough and has enough disk space as Sony Vegas requires your computer be powerful enough and have enough disk space for video editing. That’s to say, if your source files are quite large and you won’t have enough space on the output folder, Sony Vegas will not import MP4 files.

If your computer is powerful enough and you have enough space on your hard drive, but still have problem of importing MP4 to Sony Vegas, the issues can be caused by the unsupported audio and video codecs packed in the MP4 container. you can follow the following methods to have your problem solved. The following methods can solve the issue of “Sony Vegas 18/1716/15/14/13/12/11 can’t open/support/add/read MP4 video/codec”.

Method 1: Install the latest QuickTime Player or install the K Lite Codec Pack

By installing QuickTime Player, you also install necessary MP4 codes which will allow you to import MP4 to Sony Vegas easily. If you do not want to install QuickTime Player, you can also install the K Lite Codec Pack for missing video codec. However, Installing K Lite Codec Pack also installs all kinds of codes and components which may brings unknown issues for your computer.

If Sony Vegas still cannot import MP4 files after you install QuickTime Player or K Lite Codec Pack or you have some concerns installing QuickTime Player or K Lite Codec Pack , you can refer to Method 2 to successfully import MP4 to Sony Vegas.

Note: Since several users reported issues after installing QuickTime Player or K Lite Codec Pack, TechiSky does not recommend this method. Updated on July 29, 2021.

Method 2: Convert MP4 to Sony Vegas supported video WMV, AVI, MP4, MPEG-2, DV

By converting the unsupported MP4 to Sony Vegas supported video WMV, AVI, MP4, MPEG-2 or DV, you can easily import MP4 to Sony Vegas for editing.

Make Preparation: Run Aiseesoft Video Converter Ultimate

Free download the powerful MP4 to Sony Vegas Converter – Aiseesoft Video Converter Ultimate. and run it.

Step 1 Load source files

Click “Add File” button to add MP4 filees to Aiseesoft MP4 to Sony Vegas Converter. Or you can also drag and drop your MP4 files directly to the main interface of this powerful MP4 to Sony Vegas Converter.

Convert MP4 to Sony Vegas Supported AVI, WMV, MP4 to import MP4 to Sony Vegas

Step 2 Set Sony Vegas supported video format

Click the “Profile” drop-down arrow to open the profile list, and find the category of “Adobe Prepiere/Sony Vegas”. The you can set Sony Vegas compatible video “WMV(VC-1) Video(*.wmv)” or MPEG-2 Video(*.mpg)” or “MOV(AVC) Video(*.mov)”

Set Sony Vegas supported video

To import high definition MP4 video like 1080p, 720p to Sony Vega, select WMV HD, AVI HD, or MPEG-4 HD from “HD Video” Category.

Step 3 Convert MP4 to Sony Vegas compatible video

Click “Convert” button to start and finish converting MP4 to Sony Vegas supported video WMV, MPEG-2, DV, MOV.

Step 4 Import to add MP4 to Sony Vegas

When the conversion is finished, simply click “Open Folder” to get the converted MP4 videos, and then drag them to the timeline of Sony Vegas Pro. It’s that easy to solve “Sony Vegas can’t import, read, open, recognize or accept MP4” issue.

Alright so I just recorded a bit of gameplay with my friend, I leave the game, and go to Sony Vegas. I tried uploading the video to SV and it says

«Warning: An error occurred while opening one or more files. An error occurred while opening a codec.»

My codec is Xvid? Problem?

Yeah go get the newest one from the website. It has all the options (and a new look apparently). Once you update there will be a «…» box next to the FPS and there is where you set it to be CFR.

I circled the area you need to look at. Also check to make sure your vegas is up to date, 14 and 15 has recent patches that fix codec issues.

Did you make sure to use CFR in the FPS settings? Otherwise Movie Studio Platinum and Vegas can’t read it.

Well just saying I fixed everything, but I cant record in MP4 because it never lets me open it in Sony Vegas, it forces it to these settings basically and doesnt let me change the codec

But what I do is just record with AVI and it works fine, with these settings
