VISSIM in VMWare: USB Passthrough Timeout with WiBu CodeMeter

Starting with VISSIM v8, the CodeMeter dongle stores more licensing data in its flash RAM than earlier VISSIM versions. This may result in an issue called USB pass-through timeout, particularly, when running VISSIM from within a VMWare virtual machine.

In this article, let’s address this issue, and present a documented fix.

In a previous post, we have discussed how to run VISSIM in a VMWare Workstation virtual environment:

This should be working fine until recently when PTV released VISSIM 8.0. It is a great upgrade from v7 with a lot of enhancements, especially the mesoscopic traffic simulation, to name just the most note-worthy.

For existing users of VISSIM v7, the upgrade to V8 requires one unusual step, i.e., to update the contents of the CodeMeter key flash. Vissim V8 now apparently has more licensing-related data to enter the dongle than old Vissim versions. As a result, after upgrading to VISSIM v8 with the “re-flushed” CodeMeter key, you might have problem launching VISSIM in a VMWare virtual machine.

The symptom is something like this – first the code meter icon shows up in a yellowish-green color different than the normal color , and then VISSIM complains “CmContainer entry not find Error 200”:

It is even more perplexing that there will be no problem running VISSIM with the same CodeMeter dongle, but on a direct physical computer. The virtual machine that you might encounter this issue includes: Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 10 x64 Pro. However, Windows 7 x64 virtual machine has no problem.

The problem is really caused by USB timeouts when reading a large quantity of licenses. This happens when CmStick uses the VMWare USB pass-through communication mode between CodeMeter Run-time Server (that is running inside the virtual machine) and CM-Stick (that is plugged via the host physical computer’s USB port). That is why I believe that PTV has added a lot more license items into the CmStick than earlier versions, since this didn’t happen before. The solution (thanks to the heads up from Mr. John Battista from WiBu USA) is to use the “File I/O” communication mode (UseUmsDA = 0) :

CodeMeter communication mode (on the virtual machine) can be changed as follows:

1. In the virtual machine Guest OS, open the windows registry using regedit.exe

2. Go To: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWIBU-SYSTEMSCodeMeterServerCurrentVersion

3. Set the “UseUmsDA” variable to 0

4. Restart CodeMeter Service, or restart the virtual machine directly

Then everything is working again. Have fun!

Yesterday I installed AC 25 INT on a Mac 10.15.7 Catalina and Codemeter stopped working for all versions. After an hour or two of checking with the local dealer, reinstalling Codemeter and License Manager, and restarts, things started working again. Today I installed AC 25 USA and the same story, only that I haven’t yet managed to make it work.

When I insert the Codemeter key, the light blinks intermittently green-orange for a few seconds and then goes off. Google is not helping with interpreting.

I’ve occasionally had this problem with AC24 and Mac OS10.14 Mojave when moving the dongle between computers. Removing the dongle, then reinserting, so the light only blinks once, solves it. I think I saw the dongle show up on the desktop as a drive with the multiple light blinking, so I guessed it was being seen as a storage device.

Thank you very much for your report and I am very sorry to hear about the issue!

Starting with Codemeter 7.20, it no longer accepts Hardware keys configured as KEXT. The keys need to be converted into HID. Yesterday, we just solved this same issue with another client: Hardware keys no longer work after installing Archicad 25. After we converted the key to HID, it can now work properly. Please have a look at the article here and please find the converter here.

I’m not sure whether this is the same issue as what you experienced? If that’s the case, please make sure to convert the key to HID, as Apple will no longer accept the older interface starting from Big Sur.

Hello All,

I’m getting a CodeMeter error when I try to open SBPro the text of the error is:

“CodeMeter error: Please ensure your CM stick is securely in a USB port”

Everything was fine this afternoon but this evening this error appeared.

I did some research in this forum and found some post similar but not exactly the same. It looks like there is no license information on the CM stick.

Any help would be much appreciated since I can’t run SBPro.

I installed Java, and the updater gives me the screenshot at the bottom, which I don’t know whether it means that it can’t find the key or that the key is already HID.

The OS does see the key.

Just in case it means anything related, I am pasting below the contents of the WIBU page Events tab. The Container tab says “Warning There was no CmContainer found” and the License Monitoring page says “ERROR 221 CmError 221: No network license information available, Error 221”.

Anybody having problems getting into the Propellerhead/Reason Studios server for Reason authorizations, downloads, etc? Not able to access… looks like it’s down or super slow and everything times out. Bummer, since I need to do some work in Reason and can’t authorize my license online via their server. Any ideas?

Yes same problem here when using the plugin. I went on to their website it was down, then came up, I logged in, but then it went down again…

I’m pretty sure you can actually authorize your computer — something I only realized now after prodding around in my account on Reason Studios’ website. At least I hope that’s the case because I have long DESPISED the requirement to authorize when I have shelled out how much money in their store lol..

aaaaaah a very good point indeed… Reason Studios needs a better system then lol.. I have spent far too much to get that kind of treatment. The fact I can’t use software I’ve paid for is ridiculous!

I finally got into my Reason account, and to the Authorization page. But now it’s ‘Waiting for Authorizer to start’ and spinning endlessly. Already tried disabling Privacy settings, allowing popups, etc. in my browser, but still spinning. Frustrating…..

Authorised land feels pretty good. However trying to load up my email and Gmail isn’t loading. Sounds like too many humans are online right now.

Yep, I was worried about computer failures but it’s looking like the chances of server disruption are much higher. I got into the authorization page as well, but Authorizer can’t access the licensing server. Looks like we’re screwed til they get it back up.

Servers can be down for any company at any time. Reason offers computer authorization and you should use it. I could understand if it was online only, but it is not. Don’t wait for an outage to authorize—you probably will not have the best luck during that time, quite naturally. Sorry you’re having trouble.

64Bit — это поддержка многопоточности и этим все сказано.Все 8 или сколько там у Вас(?) виртуальных ядер работают и взьебывают аналоговый маршрутизатор сигналов на аналоговой схеме. Хз,как он там называется наверно тоже что то типа проца или биоса.

16, 32, 64 и 128 — это количество бит которые могут быть обработаны за один такт, а количество потоков зависит от архитектуры процессора (CISC, RISC).

Тема достаточно путанная, и я начну издалека.

Как я замучился бороться с тормозом. Я переустанавливал ризон, проблема исчезала всего на несколько включений. Чистил темп папки и менял их. Перестает тормозить на несколько включений. Последующая переустановка и чистка не приносят уже быстрого открывания и закрывания…

ах да, проблема. Она в том, что открытие 5-7 мин. И закрытие, чуть редактированного проекта 5-7 мин. Семь или даже десять.

И что, недавно открываю кодеметр и вижу, чем он там занят во время открытия ризона:

это огромный лист и он все время растет. Ризон работает 3 минуты, а этот полоумный уже 777 сообщений выдал.

Что значит это злодейство?

У меня роутер раздает ipv4 и ipv6

Возможно у тебя просто ipv4, вот он и ругается. Хотя по сути это на работу не должно влиять.

Про долгое открытие. Что у тебя стоит в настройках запуска? Какой дефолтный рэк? Поди что-то свое,с кучей готовых приборов, отдельные части которых лежат в разных местах жесткого диска? Если так — поставь дэфолтным пустой рэк и проверь разницу.

рэк с одним флавор метром… да он вообще-то летает по хорошему-то. Не производительность, а именно открытие и закрытие.

Причем даже большой проект но не редактированный закрывается мгновенно. А стоит один инструмент удалить и будет закрываться уже очень долго.

И что такое IPV4. То, что ругается вообще не очень, а все остальное я уже проверял.

Кодметр — это вообще менеджер лицензий и никакого отношения к быстродействию Ризона он не имеет. А имеют именно настройки дефолтного рэка + местонахождение используемых «инструментов».

40s, ты же любишь кучу приборов самодельных использовать? Так вот, каждый такой прибор при открытии ищет себя и всё с собой связанное на твоем жестком диске. Чем дальше раскидано это всё и чем старее, дефрагментированнее, разбросаннее жесткий диск и файлы на нем, тем открытия/закрытия/сохранения и прочее будут дольше.

Варианты уйти от этого есть. Самый банальный — новый жесткий диск исключительно под ризон и как можно меньше каталогов/подкатологов на нем. Рефилы и прочую лабудень хранить в как можно более компактном и легко досягаемом состоянии. Избегать каталогов с большим их количеством.

Upd. IPV4 — интернет протокол четвертой версии — не надо в эту сторону капать — лишнее. Если тормоза появляются после удаления чего-либо из трека, то скорее всего это всё таки жесткий диск. В совокупности с методом его использования ризоном. Со всем тем, что написал выше сталкивался на собственном опыте. Тормоза при удалении, однако, замечены не были.

В настройках у меня нет папок с большими приборами. Есть одна папка, но это точно ерунда. Там ограниченное количество комбинаторов.

Ок, ограниченное количество комбинаторов. А в каждом комбинаторе неограниченное количество приборов, а в каждом приборе свой патч и т.д. Поэтому поводу лично я не люблю комбинаторы. Еще с момента их появления. Тогда отчетливо было видно, что с ними в нашу жизнь приходят тормоза.

у меня абсолютно пустой стандартный запуск тормозит, а должен работать быстро, т.к ризон работает как обычно, как всегда работал, а комбинаторы я и в пятерке делал очень много и большие.
Но пятерка и сейчас-то моментально открывается.

Тогда не знаю. Честно говоря пропустил все версии после 3,5 и вернулся сразу в седьмую. Ты не пробовал искать в пропеллеровской техподдержке? Может есть у них что-то подобное касаемо именно этой версии.
