I have updated to the latest bios (A13) and when I boot from the Windows CD I receive a non-descript blue screen (driver library not listed) after the PE Environment loads but prior to the first installation screen. The error was 0x00000007

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That stop error code happens from a lot of situations. I found two clues searching tech net filtered for Vista.

If you had Vista previously installed on that drive with bit-locker encryption enabled it could cause that issue.
Wipe the drive and perform a clean install.

If the install disc is corrupted it could cause that error code.
When you burned the .iso file did you verify the written files after burning? Burn at a slower speed. Download a new .iso and burn the dvd again.

Enable all of the hardware in the BIOS before you try again. Verify that the hard drive shows. Use the ACHI SATA interface. You can leave the TPM disabled.

The only other information I can find related to this error has to do with somebody trying to install Windows 7 from a virtual drive. As you are not trying to do that, I’m inclined to think of driver issues. What model are your computer and DVD drive? Have you tried changing your SATA settings in the BIOS? -Alex

I was thinking of the TPM also. I’m going to try it tonight with TPM disabled. Will advise on how it goes. Thanks for everyone’s input. The m4300 does have alot of integrated hardware so backing down to a more plain configuration makes alot of sense.

Just as an FYI I did try both SATA settings with similar results. The BSOD occurs after it begins booting to the DVD at the Windows Startup screen prior to the install loading. The white bar for the PE environment completes then the logo screen appears for about 15-20 seconds then the BSOD. I never get into the installation process so I can’t load any additonal drivers or anything like that.

More info. tried it again and received the same blue screen (but no module information) 0x0000007e

I’m stumped. I ran diagnostics and everything (Memory, hard drive etc checks out.) Disabled TPM, internal modem, parallel port etc. Just bare bones. Any other ideas?

Does the hard appear in the BIOS? Iknow, I know. but I took a spare notebook SATA drive from a generic USB external enclosure to use for Win 7 RC in my M6300. I got the same wierd stuff, wouldn’t install and the BIOS showed no hard drive. I then put the drive back in the enclosure, deleted the partition, created a new partiton and formatted with NTFS. I put it back in M6300 and the BIOS saw it and Win 7 installed.

Win 7 seems to be particular about having clean drives and doing a clean installation.

Is that all the blue screen give you as far as hex values are concerned?

Those are good suggestions. I will wipe the drive with me PE boot disk and give it another try. What seems strange to me is that at this point in the installation process the only thing it should be accessing is the DVD and memory. I’m not even to the first installation screen where I would choose ‘Install’ and select my drive.

I’ll try tonight and see how it goes. I used this media for an installation on a Dell XPS 700 and had no problems. I would have thought that hardware would have been more problematic.

Wiping the drive seemed to help. I can get into the installation routine. I did have an issue expanding files but I’m suspecting that could be an issue with the DVD. I’ll burn again and cross my fingers.

Do I need to download any drivers or does Windows 7 have it all i need? If I need to download some drivers, where can i download them?
Are there any problems, which i need to know?
Would you recommend changing XP to Windows 7?

My Precision M4300 with Nvidia Quadro FX 360M driver from Nvidia.com runs smoothly on Windows 7 without any other additional drivers.

I suggest you check device manager in your current xp installation and print a system report for future reference. clau

Here is the link to Dell on the compatibility issue.

What you will need is the BIOS updated to A13. Be sure to update your optical and hardrive with the firmware updates before the installation of Win 7 if applicable from the Dell driver page for Vista.
You will need the Intel chipset and matrix storage manager for Win 7 here. You have the PM965.
For the other drivers, use the Vista version from Dell support here.
Specifically, I recommend the Quickset driver for button and battery functionality. Touchpad, bluetooth and audio are recommended too. If you have a Dell wireless card, you will need those also. If it’s Intel, use the most recent from Intel. Win 7 will find the others and update.
Use the most recent display adapter from nVidia if Win 7 doesn’t update it.

Clean install if you can.

All should go smoothly. Good Luck!

the device manager of my m4300 shows all devices correctly identified without installing any additional drivers besides the video driver. this is a windows 7 professional, but the ultimate edition runs just as well on another drive. no errors appear in device manager and everything is working.

driver installation should always be carefully considered. release notes and readme on the intel driver download page provide more information.
most important: check device manager — what you are looking for might already be there.
of course a bios update check and a clean install may make things easier. clau

after six months with the x32RC, I successfully installed Windows 7 Enterprise x64 on my Dell M43000 this week. BIOS A13, SATA op mode AHCI.

A few drivers have to be upgraded and I have still two unsolved issues.

Video driver ‘186.81_notebook_win7_winvista_64bit_international_whql’ from NVIDIA solved the non-aero problem. Sound worked, but only with internal speakers. Installing ‘R171788’ from Dell web site (Sigmatel Sound driver version for Vista x64 helped to use speakers connected to the docking station.

I still have two unresolved devices in HWMgr of type Data Interface. They seem to correspond to ‘Novatel Wireless HSDPA Modem’, but I’ve no idea where to find appropriate drivers. So far so good, who needs any longer?

The other problem is more important: Dell released a new BIOS flash A14 on january 13th, the day before yesterday. Download worked fine, but installation of M4300A14.EXE crashed. Appl error return 0x00000504.
Yes, I enabeled flash in BIOS and tried different compatibility modes. The other suggested method by Dell is to create a bootable DOS floppy disk with this file, is of no use. I’ve no floppy disk drive ‘n still no glue what tools to use on 7 to create a bootable DOS CD.
