  • Have a Dell Studio XPS 9100 computer with Windows 7 Prof installed. 

    After each bootup, in the event viewer, the Error Warning of : Error Code: 0x80000010,
    EventID: 24620, with the following information:

    «Encrypted volume check: Volume information on

    \?Volume{d3353cee-e448-11df-acd3-806e6f6e6963}
    cannot be read». 

    Error started to appear after May 2011 MS Security Updates. However I am not sure that the updates are the cause of this error. Since Windows 7 Prof does not have the BitLocker capability, it is strange that this error
    would appear. Any help in resolving this error, would be very much appreciated, Sam

  • Windows 7 is performing a check to see if the volume has been encrypted for use with BitLocker. During this check a read operation is sent to the drive. The drive returns an error indicating it has a bad block and the OS stops mounting the drive.

    From the System event log you will see entries such as:

    Event ID: 7
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Disk
    Event Description:  The device, DeviceHarddisk1DR2, has a bad block.

    Event ID: 24620
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Microsoft-Windows-BitLocker-Driver 
    Event Description: Encrypted volume check: Volume information on D:
    cannot be read.

    You said you ran chkdsk against the OS drive, but this may not be the OS drive —
    \?Volume{d3353cee-e448-11df-acd3-806e6f6e6963}

    Run mountvol from a command prompt with no switches to figure out which drive letter corresponds to that path. The mappings will be listed beneath
    Possible values for VolumeName along with current mount points are:
    in the mountvol (no switches) output.

    Once you know which drive it is complaining about, run chkdsk on that drive.

    The mappings are stored in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMMountedDevices, and Windows will leave entries there even if the device is no longer present on the system in case it is every present again in the future.

    You can run mountvol /r to remove stale entries for stuff that is no longer on the system. I would back up that MountedDevices registry key first just to cover yourself.

I get the following error in the event viewer log: Encrypted volume check: Volume information on cannot be read

Source of error is Bitlocker-driver

The above is the error, notice it doesn’t list a volume. I checked and bitlocker is not turned on for any drives, chkdsk shows no errors and everything is actually running fine, just happen to notice this error in event log. Don’t know how long I have been getting it, I only looked at event log as I cleared all event log entries.

Seems this link, M.S.is saying don’t worry about it? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976733

Malware and Webroot scans shows no problems.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Restart really didn’t make any difference, also cleared all Firefox cache and cookies. At first I thought reboot did stop the error, then it started up again so that wasn’t it

I did see bitlocker in services as manual startup type, so assume when plugging in usb thumb drive or external drive, something is asking to check for encrypted files. I have since disabled that bitlocker (BDESVC) service and all is running well and so far everything still working.

Has anyone seen this before, maybe I should do like the Microsoft link says, ignore it?

Yes, ignore it, it’s nothing more than BitLocker checking for an encrypted volume, not finding one and logging same. You’ll find that there are quite a few of these type messages show up in the logs.

Thanks, maybe I will put it back to manual in services? I sometimes get a little OCD on errors, guess that is from 36 years as a system software programmer. I like your signature, diving friend of mine was on sub when in Navy, will have to see if he knows that saying.

Just got off phone with him, he knew that saying.

The above is the error, notice it doesn’t list a volume.   • I have a Dell Studio XPS 9100 computer with Windows 7 Prof, SP1.

    About two days ago,a  BitLocker error began to appear in the event viewer.
    I have not used or accessed  BitLocker on my computer.  The following

    appears in the event viewer: Event ID: 24620; Locate ID: 1033; Event
    Source — Microsoft Windows BitLocker Driver; Encrypted Volume Check: Volume
    Information on \?Volume ID3353cee-e448-11df- —etc.

    I tried to find out how to turn on and off the BitLocker program but no
    luck.  I checked the control panel listings but did not see anything
    referencing BitLocker.  I also checked Start/All Programs but did not find
    anything related to BitLocker.  I even used Windows 7 Help and Support.  I

    did find the listing to Turn On and Turn Off BitLocker, but the highlighted
    entries did not work when clicking on them. 

    A check with Google, as best as I could determine,  indicates that BitLocker only is evailable with Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise. 

    I would very much appreciate any help in resolving the event viewer error
    problem for BitLocker.   Thanks, Sam.

  • Hi,

    You are correct that Bitlocker should only be activeavailable in the Ultimate and Enterprise versions of Windows 7.

    It may be easiest to perform a system restore to the point in time prior to the updates.

    Click Start->type system restore->and select it from the programs results. Follow the directions and select the point prior to the updates.

    Reboot when it completes.

    Then, re-run Windows update.

    Have you installed any applications that have an encryption utility?

    If the applications is installed before the Restore Point, you have no need to reinstall them.

    Also, if you find any other problem, you can easily use the System Restore to restore back.

  At first sight this could be the or possible a system restore to see if this cures it? I dont really wnat to do the whole «reinstall windows» thing, because, I had a quick look in Device Manager and MSN Messenger Plus!
