If I try to run snap under a gitlab-CI pipeline, installing the most simple package, it fails with: $ snap install hello-world error: cannot communicate with server: Post http://localhost...

If I try to run snap under a gitlab-CI pipeline, installing the most simple package, it fails with:

$ snap install hello-world

error: cannot communicate with server: Post

The gitlab-ci yml configuration file is the simplest ever:

In my case it is solved by starting the snapd service:

systemctl start snapd.service

Unfortunately, snaps use many of the underlying security tech used by docker, and they don’t play very nicely. Installing a snap also requires snapd to be running, which it’s not in docker (hence the error). I’m afraid you simply cannot reliably install snaps in docker containers today.

Note that there are other non-docker-based CI systems. You can, with a little custom work, use LXD as the backend for your GitLab CI runner, which handle snaps fine. You can also use GitHub Actions, which seem so be based on a Azure VM, which also handles snaps fine.

Seems GithubActionsCI doesn’t use Docker so I’m using this now instead of GitLabCI, to build and test snap packages.

Just note:

  • You need sudo to install snap with apt-get, and also to install any snap package with the snap command.
  • If you want to run the snapcraft (to build packages, not just test them), getting it via apt-get works, but gives a version that is a bit old (e.g. it doesn’t support layouts). If you want a newer version, you can install it via snap with snap install snapcraft but you need some workarounds to make it run, such as sudo chown root:root / and to pass the --destructive-mode flag (see https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/permissions-problem-using-snapcraft-in-azure-pipelines/13258/16).

If after installing the SNAPD on Ubuntu, Kali, or other Linux you will get an error:

solve error: cannot communicate with server: Post "http://localhost/v2/snaps/": dial unix /run/snapd.socket: connect: no such file or directory

Then this is because, after installation, the Daemon of SNAP is have not started yet and needs to start and enable manually by the user.

Therefore to resolve such an issue perform the below steps after installing snapd.

First, check the status of SNAPD service

systemctl status snapd.service

If you get the following output then the service is not yet started.

Start SNAPD service on Kali or Ubuntu Linux

In case still the error hasn’t solved yet, then run the below command. However, it will remove any existing installed application via snap.

sudo apt purge snapd
sudo apt install snapd

Обновился на 20.04 с 18.04. После обновления обнаружил, что 11 пакетов программ не обновились. Все относились к snap, среди прочих — gimp.

Одновременно с этим, пропал ярлык приложения Телеграмма и пришлось запускать его через «менеджер приложений Ubuntu». Запустился.

Через стандартные средства обновления пытался дообновиться. Загрузились какие-то обновления. Заметил, что у меня недоступен Livepatch. При попытках его запуска через терминал, получал сообщени про несоответствия кода устройства. Точного текста уже не восстановлю, спустя два дня попыток.

Обновил всё что было возможно через:

$ sudo apt update
В результате:

— Пропал менеджер приложений.

В общем, решил попробовать перезапустить snapd, команда stop прошла. С тех пор его запустить не получается.

В ответ на запрос:

sudo snap services или

sudo snap services lxd Service

Выдаёт ответ:

ошибка: cannot communicate with server: Get http://localhost/v2/apps?select=service: dial unix /run/snapd.socket: connect: connection refused

Посмотрите, существует ли файл /var/lib/snapd/state.json и какие у него права:

sudo ls -l /var/lib/snapd/state.jsonВладелец должен быть root и права тоже только у него.

И что бы проверить структуру файла установите обработчик JSON

sudo apt install jq
Потом выведите ключи у JSON файла /var/lib/snapd/state.json

sudo cat /var/lib/snapd/state.json | jq keys
Должно выйти, что-то типа такого

Если ошибок не было, то файл не поврежден.

Проблему решил, частично.

Провёл вот эту серию команд:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock
sudo apt purge snapd
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt install snapd

И переустановил lxd. Кстати стали не все пакеты, но …

snap заработал, приложения устанавливаются. Вручную вернул менеджер приложений:

sudo apt install gnome-software-plugin-snap
Ещё добавил магазин альтернативный:

sudo snap install snap-store
Из незавершенного — только доустановить все пакеты в lxd, не могу придумать команду для обновления/усовершенствования.

Даже Livepatch запустился.

Вообще, внешне, всё запускается.

ГИМП я ставил БЕЗ ВСЯКОГО идиотского снапа. и, о чудо!!, она работает!!
Снап я поставил, что бы установить телегу. Снес и телегу и снапд по бессмысленностью. А снапд ещё — за безмерное загаживание дискового пространства

So, I was trying to install VS Code:

sudo snap install code --classic

But I got the following error:

error: cannot communicate with server: Post
http://localhost/v2/snaps/code: dial unix /run/snapd.socket: connect:
no such file or directory

I have no idea what to do, I even deleted and reinstalled snap, but the error still appears…

I did:

sudo apt autoremove --purge snapd

and then:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install snapd

It doesn’t work!

Then I tried:

sudo service snapd start

The output:

snapd: unrecognized service

If I do:

snapd services

With the command:

I get the following, my system is with sysvinit:
