I just upgraded to the newest version of VM using VS2017RC and getting a similar error message on a new project with no code added (I get this error message on all my older projects as well) C++ projects without VM compile as expected:

Compiling ‘Sketch7’ for ‘Arduino Nano w/ ATmega328’

  cc1.exe*: error: -fno-fat-lto-objects are supported only with linker plugin
Error compiling core
Build failed for project ‘Sketch7’

Did all the updates for VS and ReSharper C++ and still get the same error. Is this a bug or what’s the fix if not?

Hi,

I have split your post into its own thread because that’s the easiest way to ask questions and communicate. 

Did you also upgrade the arduino ide? 

For compile errors please switch on vmicro>compiler>verbose and «show build properties». then build. Copy the output into a new .txt file and emaill to info[at]visualmicro.com with a link to this post or post it here.

Hi Tim,

If you mean update Visual Micro through the VS extension manager, yes. I even uninstalled and reinstalled it. It is currently running V1702.18.0 if that helps.

I think the problem is that you have installedthe latest avr 1.6.12 avr package in board manager. However you are using a really old version of the arduino ide which doesn’t really support the board manager.

Open board manager and click the avr package, select yes to remove/uninstall. Then click rescan and it should be okay.

we can see arduino in:-
c:Program Files (x86)Arduinohardwaretoolsavr/bin/avr-gcc

is version 1.6.5 (-DARDUINO=10605)

and that you have installed arduino 1.6.13 avr tool chain

C:UsersMikeAppDataRoamingarduino15packagesarduinohardwareavr1.6.13

Interestingly with board manager the need for a link to the arduino has been removed. In fact you can see it’s now just something else to upgade and think about. Normally you would not have to think about it but because you have one of the few older arduino 1.6 versions that supports old or different board system it’s going to confuse.

The next release of visual micro optionally allows you to work without an arduino ide which would have avoided the confusion.

Thanks for your quick response, Tim. I used Visual Micro for a few years now and love it. It’s a good product. 

The problem was with the Arduino IDE. When I opened it from Windows it ran v1.6.1 so I updated it and got a new error. VM wasn’t able to find the «arduino.h» and «pins_arduino.h» files. Long story short, I was able to track down that there were three different Adriano IDEs on the hard drive. I suppose over the years I installed them in different locations for one reason or another. The version in the Programs folder in the Arduino folder in the Documents folder were both 1.8.1 and were installed last fall. 

The setup window in VM Explorer pointed to the one in the Program folder. So I uninstalled VM and the Arduino IDE and used a registry cleaner. I moved the 3rd party libraries to a safe place and deleted the Arduino folders. 

After that, VS refused to start and hung after complaining it couldn’t find VM and that VM was installed — go figure that one. so I repaired VS and once running, closed it and installed a fresh copy of the Arduino IDE and VM downloaded from your site and not from the the Extension Manager (if that even made a difference). 

And now it works just fine. The code compiles and VS seems to be working a bit faster — but that might be in my imagination… lol. 

Please consider the problem fixed and I am happy to hear that VM won’t depend on the Arduino IDE in the future. Again, this is a great product. Thanks.

Great well done. Yes that was confusing. Unfortunately arduino 1.6.0 anf 1.6.1 were really offshoots of Arduino v1.5x. 

If anyone reading this wants to stick with 1.6.0 or 1.6.1 then use the Arduino 1.5.x app in Visual Micro.

Fortunately Arduino 1.6.2 introduced a new format which is more flexible and hopefully won’t change again soon.

Enabling LTO causes compiler error in Arduino IDE 1.8.2 #128

If the LTO option is enabled I get a compiler error where it says that «-fno-fat-lto-objects are supported only with linker plugin».

This error can be reproduced on my machine with the BareMinimum sketch and with all of the ATtiny boards.

You’ve either previously installed an old version of the Arduino AVR board package using board manager prior to installing 1.8.2 and not updated the Arduino AVR board package since upgrading to 1.8.2, or you have used board manager to downgrade the Arduino AVR board package. This core uses the compiler from the official Arduino AVR boards package (there are a number of good reasons for this — this is the typical solution used for the compiler on third party AVR board packages like this).

Thus, the AVR boards package must be at least 1.6.14 (which is what came with 1.6.12 of the IDE), which is when they updated it from 4.8.1 (which doesn’t have LTO) to 4.9.2 (which does). So all you need to do is update the official AVR board package through board manager (I recommend to the latest version, which would be the one paired with the 1.8.2 release), and LTO should work normally.

You are right. There was installed an older version of the compiler tools from the Digispark AVR Core with its corresponding package file.

At the moment a quick fix is to uninstall the Digispark AVR Boards from within the Board Manager.

P.S.:
I had installed also Watterott AVR Boards but for some reason that package had chosen the right compiler tools (=Arduino built-in tools) with its «Standard Arduino» Core menu setting.
Also the built-in Arduino boards select the original Arduino compiler tools and not the Digispark tools.

So maybe it’s only a question of modifying the settings in the platform or package files!?

so, I have attiny85 working with core. But there is problem with tiny graphics sketch: are you shure that attiny can read OLED GDDRAM? There is some note from datasheet:

To read data from the GDDRAM, select HIGH for both the R/W# (WR#) pin and the D/C# pin for 6800-series parallel mode and select LOW for the E (RD#) pin and HIGH for the D/C# pin for 8080-series parallel mode. No data read is provided in serial mode operation.

The serial interface mode is always in write mode.

So I have a very strange operation of your tiny graphics program. Maybe I have a bad Chinese copy? Driver is SSD1306.

As it says at the start of the article, that will only work with I2C OLED displays based on the SH1106 driver chip, for the reason you have highlighted in the datasheet. Sorry it’s not clear from the listing — I’ll add a note to clarify that.

I thought that ssd1306 is the same as ssh1106, because you will find ssd1306 by searching ssh1106 on AliExpress 🙂
Yes thanks, I’ve seen all your oled related programs, and plotter works.. only for horizontal lines. So I have solved my problem by buffering 2×2 pixels block on 128×32 display, so it’s resolution is 64×16 now, with 255 byte buffer 😀 thank you for your codes, really helpful. Will try to buy SSH for future experiments

    I’m trying to build a library that I’ve successfully built many times on other platforms, but I have issues building it for raspberry.
    I get these errors,

    cc1plus.exe: error: LTO support has not been enabled in this configuration
    cc1plus.exe: error: -fno-fat-lto-objects are supported only with linker plugin

    I’ve been using qmake from raspberrypi3toolchainsysrootsi686-pokysdk-mingw32 and it seems to work fine.
    Then when running make I got the errors with both the make in the sysroot bin dir, and the make versions I’ve used to compile the same lib for other platforms before..

    So I wonder, is this something that must be enabled in Make/gcc itself, or can I do it through conf files?
    Or will switching to linux make a difference?

  • removed every -flto and fno-fat-lto-objects from the makefiles and it worked ok.. also it left my libs in a src folder instead of the normal libs, which is odd.. but anyways, this is solved..

  • Well, did exactly the same as the other times I’ve built this. But it will not load the library just shows undefined references.. Though every file is where it should be and it loads the library when setting QT += ftp and I can add include <QFtp> without issues..

  • Regarding QFtp..

    I’ve been wanting to use it because I hate using time/money on something that already is provided.
    In total with learning how to build it, and building it for several platforms and failing on some, I guess I have used about 30 hours of work time plus..

    Today I just got to fed up with not getting it right for the raspberry platform and decided to give writing my own a shot, since I’ve already built a few other protocols from RFC.. And very glad I did, as I’ve already got the connections up and running with both control and datachannel.

    Just 4 hours in, I can do everything I wanted to do with QFtp xD Guess wanting to be the most effective made me very uneffective in this case :p

    Hey guys,

    I’m just getting into Arduino and I’ve been having issues with my Metro from Adafruit. I have a Trinket M0 as well, which shows up as a device when it’s plugged in, but the Metro doesn’t. I recently installed this driver and tried a new Metro since I thought it might be that I got a faulty one. The indicator lights all seem to function as normal when it’s plugged in, but it still isn’t displaying :/ any thoughts on what else I should try?

    I think you have to add the Adafruit in the IDE. If you go to the Adafruit support page for their product it should walk you through what you need to add in for the board.

    Just in case you did not know: if you have any product from Adafruit or Sparkfun, the best resource is usually their own message boards.

    It’s not wrong to ask here also and I’m not telling anyone they cant or shouldn’t—but someone from both those companies usually checks the message boards at least once a day for any user problems. They both make a lot of items that are specific to them, and they are most familiar with the issues with them.

    I had looked through their message boards before to see if anyone had a similar problem, but I never actually posted (I already had a reddit account so I thought I’d try my luck here). But you’re right, they’d probably know best! Thank you for the reminder, I’ll ask there as well.
