Question

I have a very small SCCM site with one server that runs all SCCM services. 150 managed laptop/desktops on my network.
I recently updated to 1810.(skipped 1806) After I updated the server, all my clients updated to 5.00.8634.1814 and will not update further.
I installed all 3 of the available hot fixes, rebooting between each update.
All of my clients are reporting Inactive.
No new clients will deploy.
No software will deploy.
I cannot manually install the client.

When I look at Site StatusManagement Point I see the following error:
MP Control Manager detected management point is not responding to HTTP requests.
The HTTP status code and text is 500, Internal Server Error.

At the client I am getting error in the ccmsetup.log: (Included at bottom)

Checked IIS and if I «browse» from ServerSiteDefault web site «all listed nodes i get the following:
HTTP Error 500.19 — Internal Server Error
The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.

If I brows the path, C:Program FilesSMS_CCMCCM_STS There is nothing in the folder.

Just in case I am not online when you look at C:WindowsSystem32inetsrvconfig just open it in notepad and look for the lines

scheme name=”xpress” doStaticCompression=”false” doDynamicCompression=”true”
dll=”C:Windowssystem32inetsrvsuscomp.dll” staticCompressionLevel=”10″
dynamicCompressionLevel=”0″/>

If you find this The following command needs to be run to disable the suscomp.dll

%windir%system32inetsrvappcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /-[name=’xpress’ ]

If you need to re-enable this later just change it slightly and run this command.

%windir%system32inetsrvappcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /+[name=’xpress’,doStaticCompression=’false’,dll=’%windir%system32inetsrvsuscomp.dll’]

0x87d0027e = Bad HTTP status code

Have you check you MP/DP health to make sure it is ok. Have you look at the IIS logs to see what the IIS error is?

Thank you for your quick reply.

MP Control Manager detected management point is not responding to HTTP requests.

The HTTP status code and text is 500, Internal Server Error.

Check the MPSetup log to see if it the MP upgraded correctly. Understand that the MP and the Client share the same code. You can also see about removing the client from the server, restart and reinstall the client. While not supported I have seen in the mpsetup log that the mp didn’t upgrade and didn’t retry. The command line is there and you can run the mpsetup upgrade manually.

Based on your situation, could you please advise which version is upgraded to SCCM 1810?

To update to 1810, we should use version 1710, 1802, or 1806.

Best Regards
Tina Cao

Thank you Garth and Matt, I appropriate your help.

I see there were errors in the setup log but after I initiated a site refresh As Garth suggested it stated that every thing installed correctly. (Log pasted at bottom)

My clients are still listed as inactive.
I’m still getting the same errors.

If I brows any of the nodes listed in IIS they come up empty. The associated folders are empty. I don’t know IIS that well but it seems there should be something in there.?

Are they still inactive??

Clients still do not connect.

There is no Web.config file in C:Program FilesSMS_CCMCCM_STS
I cannot find any thing that says how to recreate the Web.config file.

Can you please share the mpcontrol.log and verify that whether all the Virtual directories are created or not while installing MP.

I see on the CCM_Client/ccmsetup.cab you are gatting 80004005.

Failed to get directory list from ‘HTTP://server.domain.local/CCM_Client’. Error 0x87d0027e ccmsetup

I am guessing when you go to HTTP://server.domain.local/CCM_Client in a browser you get 401 access denied?

check the IIS of the SCCM server — find where the CCM_Client sub-site is configured to point to chances are it is c:program filesMicrosoft Configuration ManagerCCM_client

Make sure no part of that path is missing and that the files the client is looking for are present on the SCCM server.

Thank you all for your help. I realy appriciate it.

All Virtual directories appear to be created. They are just empty.
I just remove/reinstalled the MP. Reboot between.

  • The accounts you are using in in both scenarios probably lack sufficient rights.

In the first scenario, regardless of you copying the binaries somewhere else the client needs access to \<Site Server Name>SMS_<Site Code>Client during the installation. Does the account which you use in the manual scenario have that?

Also, is the account used with Client Push have local administrative rights on the client?

In this post, let’s check how to fix SCCM Client CMG Communication Failure Error 0x87d0027e. Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) is the most talked-about feature these days as it became a full release feature from SCCM CB 1802 onwards.

If you are looking for the deployment steps, the CMG Client communication post is not the right post, and you can check the detailed tutorial by Anoop.

SCCM CMG – Problem Description

While working on deploying a Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) for one of the organizations, I came across a client communication failure issue. I thought of putting it as a blog so that others can benefit from it and don’t have to go through the same pain we had.

Patch My PC

We deployed Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) in Azure, which was successful, and then we tested the features on one of the client machines successfully.

When we moved on with the testing for a larger UAT group, the client communication failed for most of the laptops.

Troubleshooting – SCCM CMG Client Communication Failure

We started the troubleshooting via log files. I will explain how you can troubleshoot SCCM CMG Client communication Failure issues.

When you check the locationservices.log, it will show INF (Internet Facing) MP failed to communicate, and the MP switching happens between the INF MP and on-prem MP very frequently.

Deep Dive into Firewall, PKI, etc. – CMG Client Communication Failure

The first thing we checked here is the port 443 connectivity from this test machine to the CMG public IP using the port query UI tool. Port connectivity was fine, and it was listening for port 443 without any issue.

After hours of troubleshooting, we identified that the PKI infrastructure has multiple CAs. Below Picture will give an overview of how the PKI infrastructure is.

CMG Client Communication Failure - sccm client cmg communication failure ConfigMgr
PKI Infrastructure – sccm client cmg communication failure – ConfigMgr

In this scenario, the certificates on the server and a few devices were issued by Issuing CA 1. Hence, we have uploaded the RootCA, Intermediate CA, and Issuing CA 1 to Azure while installing CMG.

So whichever machines got a certificate enrolled from Issuing CA 1, the client communication was a success. For others, the client communication failed because they were missing the Certificate Chain.

So to rectify the problem, we have to upload all the certs so that their certificate chain is not broken.

For Example, In our case here below, is the list of certs that should be provided to Azure while installing the CMG.

  • Root CA
  • Intermediate CA
  • Issuing CA 1
  • Issuing CA 2
  • Issuing CA 3
  • Issuing CA 4

SCCM CMG –  Is there a limitation in Uploading Client Certs?

Note: Currently there is a restriction to upload only 6 (2 root CA and 4 Intermediate CA)certs while deploying a CMG. This may be changed in future releases.

BGB keep-alive data

One of the common issues of SCCM is that clients may show an icon with a question mark in SCCM console. As you know, it has to do with BGG channel. If there is a communication issue with BGB channel between the client the management point, the client will show offline.

To know more how BGB channel works, refer to Fast Channel for System Management – Client Notification in System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 – Microsoft Tech Community

BGB keep-alive data will be considered as invalid by the site server if the time difference between the timestamp of live data from the client computer and the timestamp of the site server.

You may see such messages in CcmNotificationAgent.log on the client –

BgbAgent 9340 (0x247c) [CCMHTTP] ERROR: URL=http://contoso.com/bgb/handler.ashx?RequestType=Continue, Port=80, Options=224, Code=0, Text=CCM_E_BAD_HTTP_STATUS_CODE

For example, suppose the timestamp of the live data message from the client is 2021-09-01 17:00 GMT+8, which is sent to its site server where, at that moment, the time is 2021-09-01 20:00 GMT+8. As you can see, the time difference between the live data message and the time of the site server when the live data message is received is 3 hours which is greater than 1 hour. In that case, the live data message will not be accepted as valid data by the site server and will not be processed.

You can find similar messages printed in BgbServer.log on the site server:

How to solve it? It is simple – you just need to make sure the client computer and the site server has a time difference less than 1 hour. If the client is domain-joined, it should have the same time as its domain controller. If not, check if the Windows Time service is running. You can run the following PowerShell command to verify. Make sure it is running.

Get-Service W32Time

Consulting Services

Need help with your SCCM infrastructure ? Consult our fixed price consulting plans to see our rates or contact us for a custom quote.

As an SCCM administrator, it’s important to learn the concept of troubleshooting a Configuration Manager client installation. By targeting the SCCM client installation error codes, you will have a better idea of what is happening during client installation. The error codes are not an exact science, they can defer depending on the situation. For a better understanding of ccmsetup error codes, read this great post from Jason Sandys.

Client installation troubleshooting is probably your first challenge after an SCCM Installation. A better SCCM client installation rate equals better overall management. You want your SCCM non-client count to be as low as possible.

These error codes appear in ccmsetup logs, located on the target machine – C:windowsccmsetuplogs. During the SCCM client installation process, monitor the ccmsetup.log using cmtrace.exe and locate each error code.

SCCM Client Installation Error Codes

There are other logs, to which the SCCM client installation relates. If you don’t find enough information in the ccmsetup.log, scan all related log files in c:windowsccmlogsUse the command line net helpmsg, for more information about your return error code.

SCCM Console

You can also add the Last Installation Error column in the SCCM console:

  • Open the SCCM console and navigate to Assets and ComplianceDevices
  • In the devices view, right-click on the header and select Last Installation Error

SCCM Client Installation Error Codes

There are chances that the last error code returns an empty value for a device. Important to understand: an SCCM Client error code of “0” is a success.

This post from Technet Forums (Thanks to Charlie Hawkins), has inspired us to prepare a list of all error codes, that can happen during the SCCM client installation. Some errors have been added based on our personal experiences.

Feel free to send us any new error codes, this list will be updated based on your comments.
