Windows

Windows

  2. Тип appwiz.cpl и нажмите Enter.

System Restore

Windows use requests and responses to enroll for a certificate from a certification authority (CA). The process can get interrupted by a series of problems. Hence, it can result in the Event ID 86: CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll in Windows.

Likewise, users complain about running into the Event ID 41 error on Windows 11.

What is Event ID 86?

The Event ID 86 is a process in the Windows event log that provides an in-depth record of events concerning the system. It indicates the Active Directory Certificate Services can’t use the provider stated in the registry for encryption keys.

Furthermore, Event ID 86 is logged into the Event Log by the Certificate Services Client and contains the details about the certificate request.

However, the Event ID 86: CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll in Windows 10 can occur for many reasons. Some are:

  • Issues with the certificate request or the Certificate Authority – If the Active Directory Certificate Services on your PC are faulty or not intact, it can cause its processes to run into issues.

It turns out, I already had been getting Event ID: 86 CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll errors long back before I started experiencing DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD. (other AMD users I know were also getting this error in Event Viewer, but they don’t experience crashing). Hence, why disabling the task in Task Scheduler, replacing it with someone else’s copy, and even deleting the task (I restored the task back via system restore) does not prevent the error.

This BSOD occurs even when using Safe mode with Networking.

So far what I did was use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and uninstall the AMD graphics driver. After restarting the computer, I noticed the wifi driver was back. After waiting for a couple of hours longer than when the BSOD would occur, the error did not occur so far. I decided to install the AMD graphics driver from Asus specific for my laptop, the version older than the most recent one because I still got the error with the latest version after the recent windows update.

Before I installed the AMD Graphic driver, I renamed the old folder destination. During the installation of this driver, the Wifi driver was removed. I did a network reset and after a while, I got an internet connection. I waited for several hours to see if it would crash again. I am still getting the Event ID: 86 CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll error though but so far it has not crashed yet.

*Edit:
After plugging the charger into the laptop,  the Wifi driver was removed, and a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD occurred. Checking the Event Viewer, there was the Event 86 error when the BSOD occurred.
Performing a network reset did not remove the hidden Wifi driver so I manually uninstalled the Wifi driver and reinstall the latest Wifi driver from Asus. However, the driver was unable to connect to the internet, and eventually, the driver was removed again. This time I installed the Wifi driver that is closer to the release date of the AMD graphics driver I installed, however, the same thing happened. Performing «netsh winsock reset», «netsh int ip reset», and «ipconfig /flushdns» didn’t help.
I turned the laptop off and waited for a couple of hours and turned it on again. The Wifi driver was back and there was an internet connection. I waited again for a while to see if the BSOD would occur again but so far it has not crashed yet.
I noticed in notifications that Microsoft Visual C++ 2012, 2013, and 2015 UWP Desktop Runtime Package and DirectX Runtime are starting but they won’t finish. I am not sure if this is a symptom because they usually would finish in a few seconds. So I ignored them and closed their notification.

If the Event ID 86: CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll keeps troubling you, then this post may be able to help you. When this error pops up, your device may shut down or freeze with a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION Blue Screen. A notification highlighting the log name, source, event ID, etc., will also appear with the error message. Fortunately, you can follow some simple steps to eliminate this error.

Event ID 86, CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll

What causes Event ID 86?

The Event ID 86 often appears when the Active Directory Certificate Services cannot use the provider specified in the registry for encryption keys. It is usually related to the TPM, BIOS, or corrupted Windows Updates or Drivers.

If the Event ID 86: CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll error keeps troubling you on your Windows computer, follow these suggestions to resolve the issue:

  1. Run or Roll back Windows Update/Upgrade
  2. Update Device Drivers
  3. Update BIOS/Firmware
  4. Check Minidump files
  5. System Restore to a point before the problem started
  6. Repair Windows OS using Installation Media

Now let us see these in detail.

1] Run or Roll back Windows Update/Upgrade

Uninstall Updates

First, update Windows manually and see if this helps. However, consider uninstalling the update if the issue occurs after Windows updates. To uninstall an update, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and hit Enter.
  3. In the Uninstall or view a program page click on View Installed Updates.
  4. Right-click on the recently installed update and select Uninstall.

2] Update Device Drivers

Update drivers

Outdated or corrupt device drivers are also known to cause Event ID 86 on Windows. Update your device drivers and check if the issue’s fixed.

Follow one of the methods below to update your device drivers:

  1. You may check for Driver & Optional Updates via Windows Update to update your drivers
  2. You may visit the manufacturer’s site to download the drivers.
  3. Use a free driver update software
  4. If you have the INF driver file already on your computer, then:
    • Open Device Manager.
    • Click the driver category to expand the menu.
    • Then choose the relevant driver and right-click on it.
    • Select Update Driver.
    • Follow the on-screen wizard to finish updating your drivers.

3] Update BIOS/Firmware

update bios windows 10

Updating BIOS can fix bugs related to specific hardware or add compatibility for new devices. BIOS is to make your PC run; updating it carries a huge risk. If anything goes wrong, it could stop your motherboard from working and stop your computer from starting as expected. Always follow the manufacturer’s BIOS updating process if you need to update your BIOS. Here’s how you can update your device’s BIOS.

4] Check Minidump files

Minidump files contain the most important memory regions of crashed processes. When a process crashes or a BSoD appears, a minidump file is written to the user’s disk and is later uploaded to Sentry. A minidump usually includes the runtime stack of every active thread during the time of the crash. You might want to check these log files to check for the causes.

5] System Restore to a point before the problem started

Restore your system uing System Restore

In case of an install failure or data corruption, performing a System Restore can make your device to its working condition without having to reinstalling the operating system. Doing so will repair the Windows environment by installing the files and settings saved in the restore point. Here’s how you can perform a System Restore. Note that this can be done only if you’ve created a System Restore Point earlier.

6] Repair Windows OS using Installation Media

If none of these methods were able to help you, repair the Windows OS using the Installation media. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Download Windows ISO and create a Bootable USB or DVD drive
  2. Boot from the media and choose Repair your computer.
  3. Under Advanced Troubleshooting, select Advanced Options > Troubleshoot.
  4. Now click on Startup Repair and follow the instructions on-screen.

If the Event ID does not cause any issues like a BSOD but just logs itself in the Logs, you may choose to ignore it.

Fix: Event ID 1108, The event logging service encountered an error

Hi, on all our workstations which are freshly imaged with Windows 10 LTSB with minimal apps (office 2016 and VLC) we are getting the following errors.

CertificateServicesClient-CertEnroll

SCEP Certificate enrollment initialization for DomainCOMPUTERNAME$ via

https://IFX-KeyId-9c7df5a91c3d49bbe7378d4aba12ff8e78a2d75c.microsoftaik.azure.net/templates/Aik/scep failed:

GetCACaps

Method: GET(5250ms)

Stage: GetCACaps

A connection with the server could not be established 0x80072efd (WinHttp: 12029 ERROR_WINHTTP_CANNOT_CONNECT)

I found some article here

https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/66581-scep-certificate-enrollment-initialization-failed-event-id-86-errors.html

Which also talks about the same problem, but I cannot seem to find a solution.

Has anyone else come across this ? or a way to stop the attempts being made for SCEP enrollment ?

What is the azure section of that error ? we use SCCM in our environment and zero interaction with azure or any kind of cloud services.

Thanks in advance !
