Error 1722 Installing «Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client»

Helping one of our students trying to use our Cisco VPN with the Windwos VPN AnyConnect Client I found the installer running then failling and logging the following error in the Windows Application log.

Looking around the net I found a link to expert-exchange about the problem but the solution was hidden from public view. Always frustrating.

As little later in put it together that the machine had had a virus completely remove the Windows Firewall service from the machine. Not just turned off but completely removed. Then when the Cisco AnyConnect Installer went to what I guess is register with the Windows Firewall, it fails and doesn’t know how to handle it and rolls back the installation of AnyConnect VPN Client.

No good solution at that point, I might try to work out how to reregister the firewall like it did for NetBT when a virus removed it similarly. But most likely the only thing you can do is reinstall the operating system.

it’s true it’s related to windows firewall entries in register missing. The registry entries missing probably because of virus so be sure that you pc is clean.

Hi, I had the same error when installing AnyConnect and my computer had been attacked in the past by a vicious zeroaccess/rootkit virus that wiped out my Windows firewall service. I followed the link posted by Anonymous on 3/14/12 and ran the services repair tool by ESET as suggested in the thread. It repaired my missing services and AnyConnect installed without any problems.

Just wanted to confirm the fix and say thanks for great information. +1 for freely accessible information!

I hope this works. I have been searching for a solution for two days on some of our corporate machines. I will post back the results.

I fixed my AnyConnect problem by going to the technet article mentioned in the first post above. I used the suggested services fix posted by user narenxp, which restored my Windows Firewall and hence made my AnyConnect installation work properly. Cisco AnyConnect – Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.

Problem

Error 1722 is a pretty ‘generic’ windows installer package error. When attempting to install the AnyConnect client software this happened;

Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action VACon_Install, location: C:Program FilesCiscoCisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility ClientVACon.exe, command: -install “C:Program FilesCiscoCisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Clientvpnva.inf” VPNVA

On closer inspection of the log file at C:Windowsinfsetupapi.dev.log yielded the following;

Class installer: failed(0xe000020b)!

Solution

This is usually caused by either a corrupt network connection entry, or too many interfaces entries in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlNetwork registry key.

Thankfully Microsoft have identified this as a problem and have a tool for fixing it, download the ifcleanup tool. (There is an x86 and an x64 bit version in that zip file run the one appropriate for the affected system).

Open a command window (run as administrator) and run the ifcleanup executable.

2. Then retry to install the AnyConnect client.

Cisco anyconnect secure mobility client error 1722

Relating to this Cisco forum topic:

Yesterday Windows 10 1607 and Cisco VPN 4.5.01044. Re-install was successfull.

Today same machine with Windows 10 1703 and Cisco VPN 4.5.01044: Re-installation fails. Installation hangs on error:

And no, nothing suggested on the Cisco forum helps. Cisco supports says that on 1607 some cumulative update has helped on this issue and that seems to be true. So they will not do anything because it is MS issue.

Please disable all of your antivirus and Windows Firewall to reinstall your Cisco software again.

Does not seem to work or I don’t know how to use this software. If there is no Cisco installed on machine how can I tell that wizard that this is the program which does not install.

Ran it anyway both uninstall and install and no help, it gets stuck installing Anyconnect service.

That part of log is here, full log was over your 60000 char limit so could not post it.

This issue might actually be fixed in the 4.10.02086. Microsoft has deprecated some SHA1 certificates that are used for code signing the AnyConnect driver. Please try the latest available release on Cisco.com

Vadims Podāns, [12/13/2022 12:12] В двух словах, механизм проверки подписи документа (не серта), вскрывает подпись и извлекает хэш документа при помощи открытого ключа серта подписи и сравнивает с хэшем, который он сам посчитал. Если больше подписей нету, то проверяет валидность серта на текущий момент. Если серт протух, подпись невалидна Если есть временной штамп, механизм проверки подписи извлекает этот штамп и хэш документа из второй подписи (она ещё называется counter signature). Если все три хэша совпали, проверяет сам временной штамп. И оригинальный серт подписи должен быть валиден на ту отметку. Вот там [на картинке] есть и время создания подписи. И серт подписи должен быть валиден на этот момент. И у меня там в конце статьи есть полезная табличка, которая описывает разные сценарии в различные моменты времени Т.е. даже можно отозвать серт подписи (только не с key compromise) и всё равно пройти валидацию подписи, если отзыв случился после создания подписи. В CRL все серийники отозванных сертов содержат время начала отзыва (третья снизу строчка). И только благодаря этим временным штампам цифровые подписи более-менее жизнеспособны. Иначе это был бы ад. Или иметь серты подписи с валидностью по 20 лет и с проблемами отзыва и каждый раз переподписывать абсолютно всё по новой при замене серта.

Yesterday I posted about potentially reimaging my disk to resolve this, but I’m going to take a step back from that until I’ve tried everything else first.

Within the last month I’ve run into a problem when trying to reinstall Cisco AnyConnect 4.6.04056 on my PC. I had a previous installation where I used the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to uninstall before attempting a fresh install. When running the installer this time the progress bar almost reaches the end before I receive «There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.»

I looked in the event viewer and the error code is 1722 followed by this message:

What I’ve tried so far without success:

• Using the Windows Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to try to uninstall AnyConnect by product code, as AnyConnect is no longer listed in the Control Panel software uninstall list

• Reverting to a Windows restore point from before the AnyConnect uninstall, then using the Windows Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to uninstall AnyConnect

• Using Revo Uninstaller to locate and remove any leftover files and registry keys associated with AnyConnect

• Running the ifcleanup tool as described on this page

• The instructions on this thread from the Cisco forums

• Disabling Windows Defender firewall and trying to install

• Looking for any leftover Cisco drivers with DriverStoreExplorer (there were not any that I could find)

• Trying to install a newer version of AnyConnect

• Installing new Windows updates before running the AnyConnect installer

• A repair install (unable to do this as Windows does not show a current AnyConnect installation)

Aside from Windows Defender I do not have any other AVs running. I have Malwarebytes free but as far as I know that should not affect the install.

My OS is Windows 10 Pro 1909

Has anyone encountered this kind of error, or know of a possible fix?
