I have problem with Cisco VPN Client. After installing it when booting Win7 shows blue screen. Cisco VPN client version: 5.0.04.0300-k9

There doesn’t seem to be a complete 100% fix for everyone every time, but I’ve collected some possible solutions on a blog post I made here.

I did an inplace upgrade to a Windows Vista Ultimate machine to Windows 7 Ultimate — took approx 4 hours.

When trying the CISCO VPN client (was working on Vista pre upgrade) I would get an error 440 — Driver Failer

I uninstalled this product — rebooted, and then installed the product again.

The actual install goes fine but at the end it wants a reboot.

During the reboot it Blue Screens

Microsoft — When you have configured an automatic reboot (default settings) why do you not at least give the user the ability to read the message? If your machine is rebooting allowing 10-30 seconds to read the message would not make a difference? 0 Seconds is pointless since no one can actually read the BSOD messages.

One would think that Microsoft would work with VPN providers to make sure VPN software products work from Pre-Beta to Release — but no!

I tried the compatibility mode of VISTA — makes no difference.

The Cisco VPN tends to have compatibility issues in Windows 8 & 8.1. You need to apply a small workaround as explained below –

1. Open Registry editor by typing regedit in Run prompt

2. Browse to the Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CVirtA

3. Select the DisplayName to modify, and remove the leading characters from the value data upto «%;» i.e.

— For x86, change the value data from something like «@oem8.inf,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter” to «Cisco Systems VPN Adapter”

— For x64, change the value data from something like «@oem8.inf,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows” to «Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows”

Method 2 — Update / Reinstall Conflicting Programs

Using Control Panel

  • For Windows 7, click the Start Button, then click Control panel, then Uninstall a program
  • For Windows 8, click the Start Button, then scroll down and click More Settings, then click Control panel > Uninstall a program.
  • For Windows 10, just type Control Panel on the search box and click the result, then click Uninstall a program
  • Once inside Programs and Features, click the problem program and click Update or Uninstall.
  • If you chose to update, then you will just need to follow the prompt to complete the process, however if you chose to Uninstall, you will follow the prompt to uninstall and then re-download or use the application’s installation disk to reinstall the program.

Using Other Methods

  • For Windows 7, you may find the list of all installed programs when you click Start and scroll your mouse over the list that appear on the tab. You may see on that list utility for uninstalling the program. You may go ahead and uninstall using utilities available in this tab.
  • For Windows 10, you may click Start, then Settings, then choose Apps.
  • Scroll down to see the list of Apps and features installed in your computer.
  • Click the Program which is causing the runtime error, then you may choose to uninstall or click Advanced options to reset the application.

Method 1 — Close Conflicting Programs

When you get a runtime error, keep in mind that it is happening due to programs that are conflicting with each other. The first thing you can do to resolve the problem is to stop these conflicting programs.

  • Open Task Manager by clicking Ctrl-Alt-Del at the same time. This will let you see the list of programs currently running.
  • Go to the Processes tab and stop the programs one by one by highlighting each program and clicking the End Process buttom.
  • You will need to observe if the error message will reoccur each time you stop a process.
  • Once you get to identify which program is causing the error, you may go ahead with the next troubleshooting step, reinstalling the application.

Method 3 — Update your Virus protection program or download and install the latest Windows Update

Virus infection causing runtime error on your computer must immediately be prevented, quarantined or deleted. Make sure you update your virus program and run a thorough scan of the computer or, run Windows update so you can get the latest virus definition and fix.

Method 4 — Re-install Runtime Libraries

You might be getting the error because of an update, like the MS Visual C++ package which might not be installed properly or completely. What you can do then is to uninstall the current package and install a fresh copy.

  • Uninstall the package by going to Programs and Features, find and highlight the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package.
  • Click Uninstall on top of the list, and when it is done, reboot your computer.
  • Download the latest redistributable package from Microsoft then install it.

Method 5 — Run Disk Cleanup

You might also be experiencing runtime error because of a very low free space on your computer.

  • You should consider backing up your files and freeing up space on your hard drive
  • You can also clear your cache and reboot your computer
  • You can also run Disk Cleanup, open your explorer window and right click your main directory (this is usually C: )
  • Click Properties and then click Disk Cleanup

Method 6 — Reinstall Your Graphics Driver

If the error is related to a bad graphics driver, then you may do the following:

  • Open your Device Manager, locate the graphics driver
  • Right click the video card driver then click uninstall, then restart your computer

Method 7 — IE related Runtime Error

If the error you are getting is related to the Internet Explorer, you may do the following:

  1. Reset your browser.
    • For Windows 7, you may click Start, go to Control Panel, then click Internet Options on the left side. Then you can click Advanced tab then click the Reset button.
    • For Windows 8 and 10, you may click search and type Internet Options, then go to Advanced tab and click Reset.
  2. Disable script debugging and error notifications.
    • On the same Internet Options window, you may go to Advanced tab and look for Disable script debugging
    • Put a check mark on the radio button
    • At the same time, uncheck the «Display a Notification about every Script Error» item and then click Apply and OK, then reboot your computer.

If these quick fixes do not work, you can always backup files and run repair reinstall on your computer. However, you can do that later when the solutions listed here did not do the job.

  • I have spent hours looking for a solution to this. 

    I have tied

    — to uinstall and reinstall,

    — fix the install,

    — looked at the Network entry and installed the DNE service.

    — Tried older versions of the VPN — 4 and now trying version 5.0.07.0290.  Still not working.

    It seems to install without any errors, however when I run the client and try to connect it comes up with that error.

    The error log shows this error over and over even when I am not connected  Function CreateFile failed wiTh an error code of 0x00000002[DRVIFACE:772] 

    The errors that show when I try and connect are:

    Warning CVPND …Function StartService :CVPNDRVA failed with an error code of 1f DRVIFACE:849

    Critical CM… Failed to initialize the ipsec driver:  Returned 1

    Anyone have any suggestions about how to resolve this and get Cisco VPN working on Server 2003.

    Thank you for your post.

    The error means VPN client need to create log file but system don’t allow.
    I suggest you uninstall the VPN client, grant user account admin rights to logon, disabled firewall and AV software, install VPN client with MSI version.

DO NOT UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL — DOES NOT WORK

I have seen so many people go through this ridiculous process of uninstalling and Reinstalling the VPN Client. Follow these and your life will be made a lot easier.

Description
During the install or upgrade process, the uninstaller is not able to remove the old Cisco VPn LAN and thus creates a new one.

Solution 1.
1. Goto Start —> Settings —> Network Connections —> View Network Connections
2. On the listed Connections, you will fine two Cisco Local Area Connections. The first will have a disabled Status, the second one will have a connected status.
3. Select the Cisco VPN LAN connection that has a connected status and disable it by right clicking and select disable
4. That is all you need to do

Solution 2.
1. Open Device Manager
2. Select Network Adapters
3. Uninstall the Cisco Adapter without the Disabled Icon (Red Top Left icon)
4 Thats it

Now as a side note, there also instances where you do not have any Local Area connections in your Network Connections for Cisco. To correct this, locate the msi file, and right click on it and run a repair. This will create a new VPN Local Area Connection Entry.

Итак, дано: VPN, построенный на оборудовании Cisco и необходимость подключаться к нему под 64-битной Windows 8 Professional. Для начала устанавливаем последнюю доступную версию Cisco VPN Client 5.0.07.0440. Установка происходит без каких-то осложнений. Импортируем свой любимый .pcf с настройками подключения и пробуем подключиться. Дальше имеем проблемы:

Проблема номер один: ошибка «Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter»

Решается эта проблема исправлением значения ключа в реестре, для этого:

  1. Открываем редактор реестра (набираем «regedit» в строке поиска, запускаем найденное приложение);
  2. Находим ветку HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesCVirtA;
  3. Находим параметр DisplayName;
  4. Значение этого параметра содержит что-то вроде «oem4.inf,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows». Необходимо изменить это значение, оставив только «Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows».

После корректировки реестра перезагрузка не требуется. Итак, виртуальный адаптер теперь благополучно находится, и, если аутентификация осуществляется по Shared Key (не требует сертификата клиента), проблемы на этом исчерпаны.

Если же аутентификация осуществляется по сертификату, имеем следующее:

Проблема номер два: «Reason 403: Unable to contact security gateway»

Подразумевается, что сертификат (не требующий private key на отдельном устройстве типа eToken) по обыкновению загружен в пользовательское хранилище сертификатов (User Storage). При этом в логе клиента имеем следующее сообщение: «Could not load certificate [описание сертификата] from store Microsoft User Certificate. Reason: store empty». То есть, несмотря на наличие сертификата в хранилище, VPN Client его не видит.

Нашлось два пути решения этой проблемы:

  1. Переместить сертификат из User Store в Local Computer Store;
  2. Изменить настройки службы «Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service» на закладке «Log On», заставив службу запускаться под пользовательским аккаунтом (тем же самым аккаунтом, под которым вошли в систему сами и пытаемся подключиться).

Переходим на следующий уровень: теперь у нас аутентификация по ключу с использованием e-token (Alladin). Имеем программу, поставляемую с ключом (eToken PKI Client), которая при подключении USB-токена к машине автоматически помещает находящийся на токене сертификат в пользовательское хранилище сертификатов (именно поэтому проблему номер два я решил вторым методом). При попытке подключения к VPN в такой конфигурации получаем следующую ошибку:

Проблема номер три (не решенная): «Reason 401: An unrecognized error occured while establishing the VPN connection»

В логе клиента можно увидеть сообщение «Failed to generate signature: signature generation failed» и прочие еще менее информативные формулировки. Здесь, к сожалению, тупик: сообщения лога не проливают свет на суть проблемы, в какую сторону копать дальше — не известно.

Надеюсь, не одинок в этом вопросе и кто-то окажется более сообразителен и удачлив.

UPD: В качестве альтернативного варианта для подключения можно использовать Shrew Soft VPN Client, который не имеет проблем при запуске в Windows 8 (статья про установку и настройку этой программы уже проскакивала на хабре). У программы один минус — не умеет работать с сертификатами из хранилищ сертификатов Windows (сертификаты нужно загружать из файла при настройке соединения), что для случая с ключом на eToken тоже не подходит.

НЕ УДАЛЯЙТЕ И УСТАНАВЛИВАЙТЕ — НЕ РАБОТАЕТ

Я видел, как многие люди проходят через этот нелепый процесс удаления и переустановки VPN-клиента. Следуйте им, и ваша жизнь станет намного проще.

Описание В процессе установки или обновления деинсталлятор не может удалить старую локальную сеть Cisco VPn и, таким образом, создает новую.

Решение 1. 1. Перейдите в Пуск -> Настройки -> Сетевые подключения -> Просмотр сетевых подключений. 2. В списке «Соединения» вы найдете два локальных подключения Cisco. Первый будет иметь статус « отключен» , второй — « подключен» . 3. Выберите соединение Cisco VPN LAN, которое имеет подключенное состояние, и отключите его, щелкнув правой кнопкой мыши и выбрав отключить
4. Это все, что вам нужно сделать

Решение 2. 1. Откройте Диспетчер устройств 2. Выберите Сетевые адаптеры 3. Удалите адаптер Cisco без значка «Отключено» (красный значок вверху слева) 4 Вот и все

Теперь, как примечание, есть также случаи, когда у вас нет локальных подключений в сетевых подключениях для Cisco. Чтобы исправить это, найдите файл msi, щелкните его правой кнопкой мыши и запустите восстановление. Это создаст новую запись подключения к локальной сети VPN.
