HP Printer gets “Device Communication error (5012)”
I have spent considerable time getting my HP Photosmart C6180 all-in-one (printer, fax, scanner, copier) working on Lucid. I have seen posts indicating that other people were having similar problems so I thought I would post the solution.
I discovered that the hp-setup (no parameters) GUI and hp-toolbox both set the printer URI to “hp:/net/Photosmart_C6100_series?zc=HP547597” rather than to “hp:/net/Photosmart_C6100_series?ip=192.168.0.31” as it should be. On Lucid you can go to Mainmenu>System>Administration>Printing (system-config-printing if you need to install it with Synaptic) and change this. Right click on the printer icon, select Properties and edit the URI box. For the printer (not for a printer/fax) you can also set the URI to «socket:// :9100» and it will work. However, if you have a printer/fax you need to use “hp:/net/Photosmart_C6100_series?zc=HP547597”. Also the fax device (the icon Properties) must have a Make/Model of “HP Fax hpcups”. This cannot be changed with system-config-printing. The only way I found to get the fax to work was to use
hp-setup -i 192.168.0.31
GUI. The toolbox sets the URI wrong, but it can be corrected in system-config-printing. The Model/Make parameters are set correctly by toolbox. Note that my printer URL is 192.168.0.31. Yours will be different.
I am about to try this same setup on Precise Pangolin 12.04.

[SOLVED] printer driver/ hplip problem
Dear friends,
I have an HP Photosmart 5520 printer which used to work, but then it didn’t anymore and I tried to figure out why and how to make it work again.
The printer works well from 3 Android Smartphones over WIFI.
The printer works over a browser entering 192.168.1.170 and successfully sending test page.
The printer works over an old Kubuntu version on the same computer sending a test page.
So I assume the printer itsself is intact and the cable is intact too.
The printer is directly connected with a USB cable to the computers USB port, no hub. But tested over a different USB port and over a hub, the problem stays the same.
I reinstalled the cups and hplip packets without success.
I can add the printer over the cups web interface without errors, but it’ll stuck, not sending the test page.
I can add the printer over KDE system settings, but it’ll not print, stuck at sending.
If I add the printer over the hplip interface including the hook «send test page to printer», it’ll give this error
If I add the printer over the hplip interface without the hook «send test page to printer», it’ll jump back to page 1 «no installed HP devices found».
If I use hp-setup over console, it’ll give no error, but just say done, but no printer was added.
lsusb gives this output:
lpinfo gives this output
hp-check gives this output:
I tried a lot of things to make this work and I’m out of ideas now, if you can see the problem or can help tp find out, please reply.

HPLIP 3.9.8 «Communication Error 5012
I have an HP Officejet 6500 E709n connected wirelessly to a Trendnet wireless router using a dynamic IP (all computers connect to the router dynamically) using the newest driver hplip 3.9.8.
It keeps getting a communication error 5012 when I open HP manager. Sometimes it will connect after a reboot of the computer, router and printer and will print a test page, but close HP Manager and the printer loses connection.
When I first installed the printer using CUPS it printed ok, but I admit I was determined to be able to use all functions using the HP gui, and that’s when it stopped working.
I have searched extensively on Google and several forums and have found that it is a known issue but doesn’t seem to have a definitive answer.
There is a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/309833.
This computer is a dual boot of jaunty and XP SP3. We have two other computers connected to the router, a wireless laptop (Vista) and a desktop rj45 (XP SP3) and of course all print fine in windows. Now I know that sooner or later this problem will be solved (evidently this is a new model of printer), so I will check in regularly to see if there is a solution, and if I ever find a solution, I will post back here.
Until then, it still is faster to boot into windows to print, than running upstairs and restarting everything.

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or —compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or —run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.

Working printer device communication error (5012)

Bug Description
My Deskjet 1000 series printer doesn’t print now. It used to, but HPLIP confirms a device communication error (5012). I’m using Ubuntu 14.4 LTS (upgrade) with AMD 64bit archetecture. It worked well up until about 2 weeks ago. I printed one page perfectly, but the second page failed. I then bought the newest model of same printer (HP 1010) thinking that the device was the problem. Same error.
Any help would surely be appreciated here.
Thanks in advance,
David Sprung
P.S. I’ve tried deleting HPLIP and trying it without: failed. Installed newest HPLIP: failed. Help! I’m beginning to think it’s a software issue, as my Dad’s printer (HP) failed on his machine about the same time

sudo hp-toolbox

just upgraded to 21 though this was probably a prob on 20.3.
I have HP laserjet P1606dn set to never auto power off. (USB)
when I boot into Mint (21) and try to use it I get communication error 5012.
If I unplug/replug USB connection — no change
If I power the printer off and power it on, 12 seconds later Mint HPLIP recognizes it and then prints to it.
Be nice if I could avoid that.
Thanks!

In the End, i think hplip is just not ready for mint 21 yet (and thus does it not list as compatible on their website: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag . ng/install ). The install-wrapper has trouble probing the OS for the release and version:

The exact same thing happened to me on mint21 with an ENVY 5548 (listed as «ENVY_5540_series»).

FWIW, zeus86, I do not think you have the same issue as Kris345. It would be better to open a separate report instead of tagging on to this one.

Hi Brian! Be well.
FWIW, I am «resolving» my problem by going to windows and changing the settings in the 1606 printer to «sleep after 5 min and off after 30min» (was off after NEVER).
This way, when I send something to the printer, I know it will be off and can just press the power button and wait 12 (edit
42) seconds. This is a good solution for me since I only print perhaps once a day.
I would have no way of knowing if the 2 problems are the same and will defer to Brian’s vast knowledge.

neither is mine, at least primarily. the envy-printer is connected via usb. not sure if it has wifi, but certainly not wired ethernet.
you seem to be right, that ippusbxd and ipp-usb are different packages, but in the end it doesn’t matter much, because they basically try to archieve the same goal (sort of): communicating like it’s done in IPP but over usb, which causes conflicts in this particular case and others. keeping this in mind, the experienced issue could be very well the same, regardless of which exact middleware tries to get in between. The key here is, that ipp-usb does cause problems (at least for what i can say by now) AND is installed by default, regardless of the printer model. beside that, the second software, ippusbxd is also known to cause (the same) problems, and was in older ubuntu (and most likely mint, too) releases installed by default.
so, yes, while this might be not the «same» error or problem, it is most likely similar enough, to cause the same problems. but in the end: most (home-) users won’t notice a difference when trying to remove ipp-usb, when they are using hp-usb-printers, so if one encounters this problem, tries this, and it works, what’s the point then? i do know, that the solution might not be technical spot-on in every point, but that was not my goal. as i initialy stated: i hate printers (and i know, many do so, too), if i want to get more in-depth with something, i’m using my primary notebook with arch installed (or worse: use rhel at work. ).

Re: (maybe solved) Mint 21 have to power off and power on printer else not recognize

I tried this on mine and it seems to work.
Though I still get occasional 5012 error messages, 99% of the time , if I send something to the printer, it works, unlike before when I had to power it off and then on. Only once it did not work and I had to again power the printer off and on.
I did set my printer to sleep after 5 min, power off = NEVER, so it is always is awake or in sleep mode, though when I initially tried this, it seemed to work okay when I had the printer set to power off = 30min(that is, booting when printer was off. So you will have to play with it. With my printer I have to boot to windows to change those settings, change them, and then send something to the printer to lock the settings in. Your printer will likely be different.

(Device communication error 5012).

BKegax

Printer
Disable Smart Install»

I have just updated my Ubuntu and set my printer back to factory settings, after which I reinstalled my printer (same way as before) but this time I’m getting a «Device Communication error (5012)».
I googled and found this solution and several referrals to it. The issue they mention seems to be exactly mine, only the way the solution is solved gives me questions.
Neither in hp-toolbox
nor hp-setup
do I find a field in which I can modify the
hp:/usb/HP_Color_LaserJet_MFP_M477fdw?serial=XXXXXXXXX
or
hpfax:/usb/HP_Color_LaserJet_MFP_M477fdw?serial=XXXXXXXXX
and change the serial=XXXXXXXX
to ip=192.168.0.xxx
.
Does anyone have any ideas about this? Maybe I can manually edit a file? Or, in the hp-setup
I did see the fields network identification/hostname
, but I didn’t want to mess with this as I’m not sure, as it also wouldn’t change the serial=
to ip=
, just the name to the number.
I just realised that when i plug in my usb cable the fax and printer under hp toolbox seem to be oke. the issue under hp-check still remains though but no Device Communication error (5012).
so to me it seems like the printer is not installed as wifi but as usb, maybe it is just that that is being fixed by changing the «serial=XXXXXXXX» to «ip=192.168.0.xxx»,i’m really not sure.

sorry i couldn’t get the bold in the code to work?

Oke..solved!!

HPLIP fails with the same hardware on Mint 20 and Kubuntu 20.04
It gives a Device Communication Error 5012.
I have posted an Bug Report on the HPLIP website.
They are working on a fix, but if you have an All-in-One printer,
you may need HPLIP-GUI, which means stick with Mint 19.3 or Kubuntu 19.10.
If you have a print only printer (no scanner), you can probably use it without HPLIP,
but you will be missing some features that HPLIP provides.

GUI. The toolbox sets the URI wrong, but it can be corrected in system-config-printing. The Model/Make parameters are set correctly by toolbox. Note that my printer URL is 192.168.0.31. Yours will be different.
I am about to try this same setup on Precise Pangolin 12.04.

HPLIP Error 5012
I used the HPLIP HP Linux Imaging and Printing ( http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html ) to detect and set up my HP 4100MFP (Multifunction Printer).
The printer was automatically detected in moments and set up took a few seconds. I attempted to print a test page and received a «communication error 5012).
Previous attempts to print using the Ubuntu printer set up would also set up the printer with the same results of not being able to print. Error box kept appearing suggesting the printer was not turned on (form of communication error, I suppose).
Printer does print test page OK.
I did Google search and have found some references to other printers with mention of permissions or setting something up in root. Not sure that anything like this applies.
OS: Ubuntu 8.10
Processor: AMD 64 Athlon 3200
Memory: 3 GB
Printer Networking: Ethernet
Printer address: Mfg default 192.0.0.192 (detected by HPLIP)
PPD/Driver: HP Laserjet 4100 MFP v.3010.107 Postscript (Recommended)
Printer self test = OK
Cat5 cable test = OK
HPLIP detects printer = OK
Print job successful = NO
Re: HPLIP Error 5012
Have you rebooted both the printer and the PC? Shut both down and star printer first. I had a similar problem until rebooting both devices. Hope it’s that simple for you to.
Re: HPLIP Error 5012
Is it connected by a LAN cable? If yes then try setting up a static IP address. Should work wonders!
Re: HPLIP Error 5012
You tried accessing and configuring the printer using localhost:631 in a browser? I use that to manage a networked HP printer, without using HPLIP, and it works great.
Re: HPLIP Error 5012
Yes, this is on an Ethernet connection.
Yes, I did the Local Host.
Yes, the printer’s IP address is static.
I’ll attempt to shut down both pretty soon and see if that has an effect.
Re: HPLIP Error 5012
Did the sequence recommended with same communication error 5012.
Powered down workstation
Powered down HP 4100
Restarted HP 4100
Hp 4100 completes self test and in online status (Green)
Power up workstation
Open HPLIP
Receive Communication error 5012

I tried a lot of things to make this work and I’m out of ideas now, if you can see the problem or can help tp find out, please reply.

hp:/usb/HP_Color_LaserJet_MFP_M477fdw?serial=XXXXXXXXX
или
hpfax:/usb/HP_Color_LaserJet_MFP_M477fdw?serial=XXXXXXXXX
и изменение serial=XXXXXXXX
кому: ip=192.168.0.xxx
.

Oke..
# sudo do-release-upgrade -d
# sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove hplip-gui
# sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove hplip
# eject -i 1
# cd desktop
# sh hplip-3.17.11.run
я действительно получаю a
