You may have noticed, perhaps frustratedly so, that there is no option for adjusting game resolution in Age of Empires 2 HD settings. If you have a small screen, you may still be able to get a good experience playing this much-lauded HD version of the game, but given the generally larger screens that most gamers use today, the lack of a resolution setting is a real hurdle. There are, however, a few tricks that one can use to solve the problem.
-
1
Open Control Panel. The game’s resolution is directly mapped to the resolution you’re using for your Windows desktop, meaning that changing your Windows resolution also changes the game’s resolution. To begin, access your computer’s Control Panel.
-
2
Open the Screen Resolution settings page. Under “Appearance and Personalization,” click “Adjust Screen Resolution.” On the Resolution drop-down menu, click the resolution you want. This is the resolution both your AoE2HD game and Windows desktop will run in. The best resolution depends on the size of your screen. Here are a few popular screen sizes with their recommended resolutions:
- 14 CRT (aspect ratio 4:3): 1024×768
- 14 Notebook / 15.6 Laptop / 18.5 monitor (aspect ratio 16:9): 1366×768
- 19 monitor (aspect ratio 5:4): 1280×1024
- 21.5 monitor / 23 monitor / 1080p TV (aspect ratio 16:9): 1920×1080

Apply the changes. When you’ve selected the screen resolution you prefer, just click the “Apply” button at the bottom of the screen to accept the new resolution.
-
4
Start the game. The usual way to do this is to double-click the game’s icon on the desktop. The game will display in the resolution you set.
- You can also change the resolution settings in the Control Panel while playing the game. Just hit the Windows key on your keyboard to minimize the game and open the Start menu. Open the Control Panel, and change the resolution through the Screen Resolution settings page, and then return to the game by clicking the game’s icon on the Taskbar.

-
5
Select your preferred resolution. You screen will automatically change to the resolution you click. If you are unsure of the best resolution to use, keep clicking the available resolutions till you find a suitable one.
- To switch to the game to see how a resolution you selected affects it, press the combination Command+Tab till the game’s icon is highlighted and then release. To go back to the Display settings page, press the same combination again until the icon for Display settings is highlighted.
- Keep at it till you find the resolution that works best.

What if my maximum screen resolution is 1366768? Is it possible to change that?

Of course not. The «Tug of war» is Empire Earth II: The Art of Supremacy’s feature, so please start the game from file EE2X.exe instead of EE2.exe

when I try to run this patch it says that empire earth is not installed on my computer and suggests that I run it while trying to run the patch. Even when I do this I still get the error message. by the way my empire earth 2 game was downloaded online from gamefly (not sure if that changes anything). any suggestions?

Hi. UP1.4 installer doesn’t check if EE2 is installed or not. Maybe this error appears when you’re trying to install patch 1.2?
Start your EE2 and check if there: I.imgur.com is: «Version: 1.2». If it’s 1.2, then just install UP1.4 (the first or the second installation version) to the folder where your game is installed.

typo: is there any reason that running the patch 1.2 download would fail to recognize my fully installed empire earth II game?

Sometimes it happens, for example because of programs like: Ccleaner, etc. You will have to reinstall your game, then install patch 1.2, then 1.4

thanks for walking me through all of this. I’ve got version 1.4 up and running (lots of cool features, thanks) and I love the new levels of zoom but I ran into another problem. When I scroll up or down, it automatically goes to the extreme (very close up or very far away, I can’t stop it anywhere in between, my keyboard controls can’t operate because of this effect). this happens both with my laptop trackpad and an external mouse. I am running windows 8 by the way. And lastly, and less vital, is my screen resolution. I can run the game on my computers lowest setting (1024×768) but not any higher. I tried simply changing the game setting to my preferred resolution and matched it to my computer setting but had no luck. Any tips you could offer to run the game at a higher resolution?

Sorry for late reply — I’m not checking this site very often.
You can use: + and — keys on your keyboard to zoom-in or zoom-out.
If it doesn’t work — (just for test) run UP1.4 installer again, and select the installation version with «CAM FIX v. 1». But I think it’s more like a problem with the scrooling speed in your Windows settings. Try to fix it in the Control Panel.
There’s a problem with EE2 and Windows 8. UP1.4 has included Windows 8 FIX from this link:
Easywinclan.forummotion.com
Please read it for informations how to start and use the FIX.
What’s your laptop’s maximum possible screen resolution?
Is your screen resoultion supported by UP1.4? If it is not, then you can set your own screen resolution, please follow this tutorial:
Easywinclan.forummotion.com
I hope it helps.

Hey, I installed the patch on EE2 + AOS but there are no options to change the resolutions shown on the forum page you posted, the only ones showing up are the original 4. Before using the patch I used UniWS which let me change the resolution but when I try using it now it doesnt allow me to set the resolution and patch, it also crashes a few seconds after I click «Find it for me…». Thanks in advance!

Why? You don’t like it? Open file zips_ee2xEE2X_db_140.zipdbunitfile4.cfg with notepad and edit: «fighter4.ddf» to «fighter.ddf», «bomber4.ddf» to «bomber.ddf», etc. It will set to use unedited files.
