Error 1073807202 labview

When attempting to use NI-VISA to communicate with hardware in LabVIEW or NI-MAX, I get the following error: Error -1073807202 (Hex Code: 0xBFFF009E): A code library required by VISA could not be located. How can I troubleshoot this error?

Issue Details

When attempting to use NI-VISA to communicate with hardware in LabVIEW or NI-MAX, I get the following error:
 

 
Error -1073807202 (Hex Code: 0xBFFF009E): A code library required by VISA could not be located.

How can I troubleshoot this error?

Solution

You may be getting this error for one of the following reasons:

  • NI-VISA, NI-Serial, or NI-488.2 Driver not installed in Your System: 
    • Development: Verify that the driver(s) you need are installed and appears under My Systems >> Software in NI MAX.
      • Otherwise, download and install the correct driver(s) for your hardware (found under Supported Devices under the driver version readme)
    • Deployment: Verify that that the driver(s) you need are under Remote System >> [Your Target] >> Software. If it is not installed on the device, install them on your target.
  • Visa32.dll missing: 
    • Verify that this DLL is located at C:WindowsSystem32. Uninstalling and reinstalling or repairing I-VISA should install this DLL to the correct location.
  • NI-VISA is not Primary: When installed third party drivers, it’s important to confirm and set NI-VISA as primary . 
  • Internal Error in NI MAX: Fix or Reset the NI MAX Database File. 
    • Note: Resetting the MAX database will just delete all the scales, tasks and configurations of recognized devices on the Measurement and Automation Explorer itself, it will not impact the hardware in any
  • Driver Issue: Reinstall or repair the driver.

I’ve been working on my Sparkfun Inventor’s kit and have been running into all kind of problems in getting it set up.  My experience has deviated from the instructional videos they offer so I’ve had to solve a bunch of problems.  The latest is this error I get when I try running their Blink Example:

After typing in the Serial Port COM7 and clicking the green button, I get the error:

Error Text:

Error – 1073807202 occurred at VISA Close in LMH-LINX.lvlib:Device.lvlib:Close Device.vi->LMH-LINX.lvlib:Close.vi->LMH-LINX.lvlib:LINX – Blink (Simple).vi

I did some research and finally figured out that NI-VISA wasn’t installed at all on my computer.  You can check to see if it is installed by launching LabVIEW and then clicking on Tools > Measurement & Automation Explorer…

There is no NI-VISA installed!  I solved this problem and have the step-by-step solution for you too…

Hardware/Software:

  • MacBook Pro
  • OS 10.10.3 Yosemite
  • Oracle VM VirtualBox
  • Windows 7
  • SparkFun Inventor’s Kit for LabVIEW

I had followed all the instruction so I don’t know how that happened but here’s how to install it:

Step 1: Visit http://www.ni.com/downloads/drivers/

Step 2: Click on “NI VISA” in the Popular Drivers section or click here.

Click on “NI VISA” in the Popular Drivers Section

Step 3: Click on the driver for your operating system.

For me running Windows 7, it would be the driver circled below:

Step 4: Click on the full downloader link:

You can save it to your hard drive or run it from the location (which just downloads it to a temporary location).

Step 5: Run the NI Downloader.

You will first get a “Open File – Security Warning.”  Go ahead and click the “Run” button.

Step 6: Pick a location to save the installation executable.

I just saved it on the desktop:

Step 7: Run the file you just downloaded, NI-VISA 14.X.X.

It will then extract the files to your hard drive.  Click OK:

Step 8: Click the “Unzip” button to extract the installation files.

You can change the location if you want by clicking the “Browse…” button:

You’ll get this window when it is done.  Click ok:

You’ll then get a “User Account Control” message.  Click “Yes.”

Click Yes to allow the installer to run

Step 9: Go through the NI-VISA Installation.

At the NI-VISA installation window click “Next >>”

You can modify the Destination Directory or just click Next >>.  I would suggest just clicking Next unless you are installing software to a different drive:

Click Next to begin the installation

If you want to adjust the Features to install change them in this window and then click “Next >>”

NI-VISA Features

You will then get the option to unselect the “Search for important messages…” option, then click “Next >>”

Leave the check-box checked to receive product notifications–Click Next

You will then either find out any new product notifications or see that there are no notifications for your products like I did:

No product notifications– Click Next >>

Accept the 2 License Agreements and then click “Next >>”

Accept the 2 License Agreement(s) and click Next >>

Check the “Always trust software from National Instruments Corporation” checkbox and click Next >>

Check the box to always trust National Instruments Corporation and then click Next >>

Click Next to begin the installation of NI-VISA:

Click Next >> to begin the installation of NI-VISA

If everything goes well you’ll get the “Installation complete!” window.  Click Next >>

You’ll then be asked to Restart your computer.  Click the “Restart” button:

You can now relaunch the Measurement & Automation Explorer by selecting Tools > Measurement & Automation Explorer from the LabVIEW menu.  Then expand the Software section in the left column an see that it’s been installed:

Step 10: Open the Manual Blink .vi file Example and try it again.

You can find the Blink Example file on your hard drive in the following location: C:Program FilesNational InstrumentsLabVIEW 2014examplesMakerHubLINXLINX – Blink (Simple).vi

Step 11:  Manually enter the COM port and make sure Digital Output Channel is set to 13.

Step 12: Click the right-pointing Run arrow to run the program:

Step 13: Click the green circle to turn on the blue LED on the RedBoard.

The green circle will light up in the LabView window when the button has been clicked:

The green circle changes to a brighter shade of Green when the LED is on

And the LED on the RedBoard will come on (by pin 13):

The Blue LED light will come on

If your blue LED comes on you have installed NI-VISA correctly!

labview visa serial

I am using Labview 8.2 to communicate with a microcontroller using serial write/read (at least I am trying to…).

I open the example file «Basic_Serial_Write_and_Read.vi» and as soon as I press «Run» the following error appears:

«Error -1073807202 occurred at Property Node in VISA Configure Serial Port (Instr).vi-> Basic_Serial_Write_and_Read.vi

This error code is undefined. No one has provided a description for this code, or you might have wired a number that is not an error code to the error code input.»

The same thing happens with every example using VISA serial communication I try to open.

My OS is Windows XP SP2.

Any ideas as to what is wrong and how I can fix it?

The example file «Basic_Serial_Write_and_Read.vi» runs without problems in my computer. If you ask to LabVIEW to explain the error code -1073807202, you get the following explanation:

Error -1073807202 occurred at an unidentified location

Possible reason(s):

VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF009E) A code library required by VISA could not be located or loaded.

I think you must re-install LabVIEW.

serial write labview

Thanks to you all for taking the time to reply.

The problem was solved. I was using the student version which does not include the VISA drivers. So all I had to do after all was download and install the VISA software which was not included.

If someone else needs to download VISA drivers here is the link where all VISA versions can be found:

I am trying to set the baud rate on my COM port to 56.7K and I am getting the following error (copied from «explain error » box).

Error -1073807330 occurred at Property Node (arg 2) in

(Instr).vi->Change baud rate.vi

VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF001E) The specified state of the attribute is not valid, or is not supported as defined by the resource.

Now I have gone and changed the baud rate (by force) through Device Manager and the baud rate is supported (I am assuming, since it gave me that baud rate as an option). The only problem now if that when I try to configure my COM port for the parity and bit size with the Visa Cofnigure Serial Port , the default baud rate on that call is 9600. I am assuming that this will change that COM port’s baud rate to 9600, even though I have set it to 56.7K through Device Manager.

I have included the sample code where the error is being generated on my system.

Why am I getting this error ?

your error explanation is OK as I read it. It says:

Error -1073807330 occurred at Property Node (arg 2) in

(Instr).vi->Change baud rate.vi

This means that you call ‘Change baud rate.vi’, which calls ‘VISA Configure

(Instr).vi’, where a property node is executed. The second argument of this PropNode (.. at Property Node (arg 2).. ) causes the above mentioned error, because the stated value is not acceptabel for the PropNode.

I can’t tell the reason for this inacceptance, but being able to set this baud rate in device manager does not mean that all the participating code and devices can handle this. Espacially NI-VISA itself _may_ have a problem with this..
What to do?
1. Try to connect to the serial device using Hyperterminal with exactly the same parameters. If this succeeds than VISA is to blame. Contact NI support for help. Else find another baud rate.

2. Right-click to the PropNode and select ‘Ignore errors inside Node’. Test your code now. If it works this way you should safe ‘VISA Configure

(Instr).vi’ with a different name into your private project folder (for example as ‘ My VISA Configure

So, I played around with a new USB hub that has 4A of power which should be good since I am running 8 parts. I am still having the same trouble. When LabVIEW is up and running and I disconnect a USB, the program will no longer see the USB unless i shut down LabVIEW completely (not just the vi) and restart the program. Is this normal? The current setup that I am tryingt to replace has a PCI card for the 8-up port so it is not possible to unplug the part while LabVIEW is running. Is it possible for LabVIEW to see the port after replugging the port in while LabVIEW is running?

For troubleshooting purposes, nothing. On the production line it will be a PCB board

I just had a curious thought. The original error message says that there is an error while configuring the serial port. If you look inside that VI all that is there is one large property node. Now the error message says that the problem is specifically with arg8, or the 8th item in the property node (Serial Settings:Flow Control). The significance of this is that property nodes «execute» from top to bottom so LV had already set 7 other properties on the port without complaint.

First, put a property node before the serial port configuration that has all the same properties as the one in serial port configuration VI, but are all set to read. When the error is occurring, what are the properties that you are reading?

Second, try creating a copy of the existing serial port configuration VI that doesn’t have the last two properties (Flow control and whatever is after it). Do you still get errors?

PS: you will need to try these experiments because I have not been able to duplicate your problem on my computer.

Try to open the port using Windows Hyperterminal and see if you get an errror.

I get the message «Error -1073807202 occurred at Property Node in VISA Configure Serial Port», when try to use
the include examples of serial port read/write. or build my own.

DavidT, thank you for your interest.
I working in a full, fresh installation of LabView 7.1.
Also a have installed the 7.1.1 update, but it finnish with
lot’s of errors (i attached the log file).

No matters the update is installed or not, i got the same error.
My Windows XP Pro is a spanish version.

What David had in mind was that you uninstall/reinstall/upgrade NI-VISA, which is driver software that may not have been installed when you installed LabVIEW. Certainly, the 7.1.1 patch would not install this driver.

Your VI shows that the baud rate is being not set exactly to 125000 but instead it is being set to 128000 which is close enough to allow the communication to work.

I should be able to make the serial port communicate at 125000 using this new VI with the VISA serial VI.

Well the idea I had on how to make the VISA serial VI and the dll VI to work together, does not work as you can not open the dll while the VISA serial VI has an open session.

Is there a way we can make the VISA serial VI ignore the read back and leave the baud at 125k? Ignore Errors inside Node does not work.

Ok, the easiest solutions are usually right in front of your face.

Using the TestBaudRate I was able to determine that the actual baud rate that the serial port was going to was 128k. Since I know that this is close enough for communication, I set the baud rate for the VISA serial VI to 128k. The VISA serial VI is happy and my communication works.

My initial guess would be that you’re just misunderstanding the Advanced Serial Write and Read.vi example slightly. Notice that the example (which you’re using as a subVI) has a While loop inside it. When your code runs that VI as a subVI, the execution will get «stuck» in the subVI because that While loop will just keep running over and over. The read string won’t get passed out until that While loop stops. (You can check this by running your code, then opening the subVI’s front panel and clicking the Stop button in the lower left.)

If you’re looking for example code to edit for use in an application, I would advise you to take a look at the Basic Serial Write and Read.vi, as well. It executes once and exits, which is more likely to suit your purposes for a subVI.
