Question
Issue: How to fix the “Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion” on Windows 10?
A couple of days ago, I installed Windows 10 update, which caused my WiFi adapter to stop working. At the moment, I receive this error message: “Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.” What should I do? Thanks in advance!
Solved Answer
The “Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion” error has been bugging people since the last decade, and troubles still persist. Most people reported that this error typically occurs after installing Windows updates.
The problem seems to be related to the dependency service and often happens to occur when trying to open Security Center, Microsoft Exchange, Print Spooler, Themes, or any other service. According to Windows experts, the Error 1075 might have been triggered by the latest Windows 10 update, which might have caused driver malfunction or removal of some system components for whatever reasons.
Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer.
Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.
The error message (above) is quite informative as it indicates the culprit so that it would be easier to address the issue. Evidently, it is related to the dependency service, so it’s important to find out what system components stopped from running properly leading to the crash of the dependent service and the emergence of the Error 1075.
Error 1075 typically appears after Windows updates
However, usually, it’s not possible to check the dependent services because the Dependencies tab on the Security Center window displays two empty boxes and provides zero explanation. Luckily, a simple registry modification should help you to fix “Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion,” so don’t wait any longer and try to perform the following steps.
TIP: Before you proceed with modifying the registry, we would like you to make sure that the malware is not causing errors on your Windows machine. For that, we suggest you download and install Reimage, and then perform a full system scan. If you have problems starting any of the Windows services and you get error 1075, Then there are problems with the dependant services. In my case, I was trying to log in on my computer in an Active Directory environment but I am unable to login because of the failure of Netlogon Service. This article will help you to solve the problem related to failure in any services. You have to follow the step by step process mentioned in this article about your failure window services, which generate Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion
Troubleshooting Steps
- Press Win + R Key to lunch RUN dialog box and type service.msc.
- Find the Netlogon services, right-click, and start. But you will find service was stopped and unable to start due to error code 1068
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start
- Now right-click on Netlogon service and click on Properties, check their Dependencies services, and that was Workstation service (LanmanWorkstation), and you are not able to start due to an same error 1075 mentioned below.
Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion
Service dependencies are the main issues for this error code, such as Workstation service, which depends on Browser Support Driver, Network Store Interface Services, SMB2.0 MiniReDirector. Other services, which depend on Workstation service such as Computer Browser, Netlogon, Remote Desktop Configuration. And now, due to their dependencies, you could not able to start any of these services.
In my example, I was unable to start the Netlogon Service, which has a further dependency on Workstation services. so now, we have to focus on resolving the problem of Workstation service.
Resolution Steps
- Press Win + R Key to lunch RUN dialog box and type REGEDIT and press Enter.
- If a UAC opens, click Yes to proceed.
- Use the left pane to navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesLanmanWorkstation
- Check the value of the “DependOnService” value data box if it should contain Browser, MRxSmb2.0, and NSI, verify it. If you found any other services are also included, double click to open it and remove them.
- Close Registry Editor and reboot your system.
- Repeat the same steps for Server service
It’s done, your problem will be resolved. Now you are able to start the workstation service and also other dependent services.
Note: In my example, we have resolved the error related to starting Workstation services, in your case, there could be a problem in other services like DHCP. So, you have to navigate the below registry and should verify DWORD DependOnService and check out the value data box to verify the DWORD value,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDHCP

Troubleshooting
Problem
This technote explains why installing IBM® Rational® ClearCase® or ClearQuest® from a remote release area on Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 or Windows 2008 R2 using Remote Desktop can cause «Error 1075 — the dependency does not exist or has been marked for deletion.» during startup.
Symptom
After installing ClearCase or ClearQuest from a remote Enterprise Deployment Release Area on Windows Server 2003 through Remote Desktop, the following error occurs while attempting to start ClearCase or ClearQuest:
Error 1075 — the dependency does not exist or has been marked for deletion.
Example configuration:
XP client using Remote Desktop —> 2003 Server —> Release area
Cause
Windows Terminal Service may be enabled on the server in Application Mode, thus causing the remote installation to fail.
See technote 1119359 for more information on this known problem with ClearCase.
Resolving The Problem
If you cannot apply the solution outlined in technote 1119359, then the following workaround may be deployed to complete the installation of ClearCase or ClearQuest.
WORKAROUND:
WTS requires all applications to be installed while at the console while Remote Desktop does not.
With Windows Server 2003 you can remove Windows Terminal Server and still remotely connect using the Remote Desktop feature. This feature will allow you to install ClearCase or ClearQuest remotely, and from a remote release area.
After setting up Remote Desktop and uninstalling WTS, you can proceed with installing ClearCase or ClearQuest. When the install has completed and the server has been restarted, you can reinstall WTS.
Note: You must be using a Windows operating system that supports Remote Desktop, such as XP.
You must enable Remote Desktop and verify that you will have login rights:
- Right-click My Computer > select Properties
- Select the Remote tab
- Under Remote Desktop, enable «Allow users to connect remotely to this computer»
- Click «Select Remote Users» to specify what user will need remote access
You can then use the following command to administrate the local server console:
- Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Client
or
- Start > Run and type: mstsc /v:<servername> /console
Directions for uninstalling or installing Windows Terminal Server:
- Click Start > (Settings) > Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs
- Click Add/Remove Windows Components from the left-hand pane
- In the Windows Components Wizard, uncheck Terminal Server (it’s checked by default)
- Click Next and then Finish

Windows 7 Pro laptop will not connect to corporate domain. Multiple identical twin laptops have no problem.
Best suggestion so far has been to leave the domain and rejoin it, BUT the relevant buttons are grayed out and the comment says «Note: The identification of the computer cannot be changed because:- The Workstation service is not running. Open the Services
snap-in (services.msc) to ensure it is running and set its Startup Type as «Automatic».»In services.msc the Workstation service is already set to Automatic but is not started. When I try to start it manually the response is «Windows could not start the Workstation service on Local Computer.» and then «Error 1075: The dependency service does
not exist or has been marked for deletion.»Rebooting gets me nowhere.
In all other respects that laptop appears fine and can connect to the Internet, but NOT to the network. I have brought it and a twin laptop home to try on my domestic network and get the same results.
Any ideas, please?

Thank you Brano Lukic, but that was talking about a different operating system.
I cannot wait any longer and hence I have taken an image from the working twin laptop and put that onto the problem machine. I then changed the Windows license key and the Computer Name to the correct ones.

We have already seen many issues regarding various services, when dependency service do not coordinate, the actual service failed to start as a consequence of this. Recently, we came around the similar problem for Security Center service. If you can’t start Security Center service, checkout this fix. After applying the same fix, one of my reader asked that he now gets different error and thus can’t start the service. This is what he received now:
Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer.
Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.
This error is not only bound to Security Center service, but you can get this with other services too, which have dependency on some other services. In such a case, when try to check Dependencies tab for the service, you’ll find that both the boxes (This service depends on the following system components and vice versa) are empty.
After doing a bit research on this error, we found that this hiccup can be tackled easily from registry manipulation. Also, you may want to give a try by running SFC /SCANNOW in administrative Command Prompt and see if it helps. Even if this not helps and you’re still getting Error 1075, no matter whichever the service is, try this general method by substituting your service name in successive steps:
FIX : The Dependency Service Does Not Exist Or Has Been Marked For Deletion In Windows 10/8
Registry Disclaimer: The further steps will involve registry manipulation. Making mistakes while manipulating registry could affect your system adversely. So be careful while editing registry entries and create a System Restore point first.
1. Press + R and put regedit in Run dialog box to open Registry Editor (if you’re not familiar with Registry Editor, then click here). Click OK.
2. In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServices<service name>
Here you need to identify the technical service name for which you’re facing issue and substitute into above mentioned location. To identify the service name, run services.msc command. In the Services window, double click the issue creating service. On the General tab, notice the Service name there, this is what you need to place in the registry location mentioned above. Thus, for example; if the Service name is wscsvc, registry location becomes HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServiceswscsvc.
3. Once arrived the correct registry location for the service with which you’re facing problem, highlight the Service name key and export it as backup. Now come to its right pane, you’ll find that there is multi-valued registry string named DependOnService. Simply right click on it and select Delete. Select Yes here:
Finally after deleting the string, you can close Registry Editor. Reboot the machine, and retry to start the service. This time the service will start as usual, without any error.
That’s it! Go here if you’re facing Error 1079 while starting services in Windows 8.1.

Windows could not start the Themes service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.
This article addresses other Theme service errors Fix for Themes Service Startup Problems in Windows 7 and Vista.
Cause
This issue has been reported by several users, primarily occurring in systems running Windows 7. And it appears like the problem is caused by an adware which registers a service named iThemes5 (powered by “iThemes.dll”), and adds itself as the dependency for the “Themes” service.
First, make sure you eliminate all the adware, PUA, and malware from the system. Use reputed anti-malware products like Malwarebytes AntiMalware, Adwcleaner, etc. and do a thorough checkup using your anti-virus software.
Then to fix the Themes service, use these steps.
Open an elevated or Admin Command Prompt window, and type:
sc config themes depend= ""
Press {ENTER}.
Note: You should see the message [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS. On the other hand, if you receive the following error, then it probably means you’re running it from a normal Command Prompt. You need to run it from an elevated or administrator Command Prompt. See how to open an elevated or admin Command Prompt.
[SC] OpenService FAILED 5:
Access is denied.
To confirm if dependencies for “Themes” are removed, run this command:
sc qc themes
The dependencies field should be empty, as shown above.
Then, start the Themes service by typing this:
net start themes
That fixes the Themes service. The instructions apply to all versions of Windows, including Windows 10.

I have a similar problem: I have to start manually this service once in a while. For those of you who have the same problem you can create a bat file and execute it when the service is not running (VMAuthdService service). This doesn’t solve the problem, it’s just a kind of workaround. The content of the file is the following:

>nul 2>&1 "%SYSTEMROOT%system32cacls.exe" "%SYSTEMROOT%system32configsystem"
REM --> If error flag set, we do not have admin.

echo UAC.ShellExecute "%~s0", "", "", "runas", 1 >> "%temp%getadmin.vbs"

exit /B

You can fix this by starting the service manually.
- Type
services
in the Windows search bar. - Open Services; scroll to the VMware Authorization Service (should be close to the bottom of the page)
- Double-click to open the Properties page of the service.
- Change the startup type to Automatic and then start the service. That way, the service will be started automatically every time you log in.
