Issue:
When installing or launching AutoCAD the following message appears:
Autodesk AutoCAD
«Error 1324. The folder path ‘<path name>‘ contains an invalid character.»
Causes:
AutoCAD is unable to locate the default Windows «Shell» folders.
Solution:
To resolve the error, use the following process:
- If the shell folders do not exist, create the standard Windows My Document folders on the local machine:
- C:Users<userProfile>Desktop
- C:Users<userProfile>Music
- C:Users<userProfile>Pictures
- C:Users<userProfile>Videos
- C:Users<userProfile>Documents
- Confirm that the following folders exist:
- C:UsersPublicDesktop
- C:UsersPublicMusic
- C:UsersPublicPictures
- C:UsersPublicVideos
- C:UsersPublicDocuments
- Backup the following two registry folders located here to the desktop:
- [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders]
- [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders]
- Within the registry, change all redirected paths in the above two folders to point to the local paths created previously.
Note: The My Pictures and Personal registry values in the above two locations are crucial in this process.
If they are referencing either a mapped drive such as \<serverName><shareName> or a user profile like <userProfile>My Documents they should be changed to standard Windows paths: C:Users<userProfile>My Documents.
- Launch or Install AutoCAD.

‘Error 1324. The folder path ‘My Pictures’ contains an invalid character’ message is a huge problem with Windows 7. Anytime a user has folder redirection for document, pictures, music, ect… msi’s will give the following message when configuring or
installing. Not all MSI’s have a problem but some do and it makes deploying software a nightmare.Yes, I know there is the option of resetting your user shell folder paths back to default, but we need redirection and the msi packages do not like the
\servername in the users profile path. This needs to be fixed!!
The registry key causing problems is HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer User Shell Folders.

Hi Everyone,
I’m a little late to the party but I might have some useful info. I just ran into this same issue. Windows 7 Pro, Win2003 SBS server domain, My Documents being redirected through a Group Policy Setting. My Documents redirects to \SERVERUSERSUSERNAME.
Error message that My Documents contains an invalid character. Like TS7, if the user logged in was a Domain Admin, this error did not occur. The difference between a Domain Admin and a Domain User? In my case, The Domain Admin has rights to the USERS folder
I listed in the My Documents redirection path. A Domain User does not. A Domain User has full rights ONLY to their User Folder (The USERNAME) part. By giving the Domain Users READ access to the USERS folder (only that folder) the error went away. Apparently
even though the user had full rights to their user folder, the fact that they didn’t have any rights to the USERS folder in the path was causing the issue. (at least in my case). Hope this helps.-

It doesn’t have a virus or malware or whatever.. The paths are
\servernamehomedirmy pictures which is legit. Their documents and music have been redirected to the server. My guess is that you are a home user…For somebody else that has this problem, I fixed it by changing the redirection policy from «redirect to the users home directory» to «redirect to the following location». I then set the location to their home folder drive letter which is U:.
The result is a path that set to ‘U:my pictures’ instead of the two backslashes. Its more of a workaround then a fix but it works.

Problem
This technote explains why attempts to install IBM Rational products from a release area on Microsoft Windows results in the error, Error 1324 the path Program Files contains an invalid character, and provides steps to resolve the problem.
Cause
The location specified in sitedefs.dat file for the install directory tree is invalid.
In one scenario, the install directory defined in the sitedef.dat file was E:Program FilesRational

Одной из распространенных проблем при установке приложений является ошибка «Error 1324 The Folder Path Contains an Invalid Character». Обычно она возникает из-за недопустимых символов в профиле пользователя. Существует несколько способов решения этой проблемы:
Как установить под другим профилем

- CurrentVersion
- Explorer
- Папки-ракушки
- Затем нужно открыть «Personal» и проверить, что «Value data» находится на «C:Users<username>my documents» (вместо <username> должно быть ваше имя пользователя).
- Затем то же самое следует повторить для всех этих путей регистра:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer User Shell Folders
- KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE MicrosoftWindows CurrentVersion
- KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer Shell Folders
- KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer User Shell Folders
- После этого закройте окно и перезагрузите компьютер.
- Попробуйте установить программное обеспечение еще раз
Как удалить недопустимый символ из реестра

Are you trying to install new software into windows and receiving Error 1234? Generally this error occur while someone trying to install new software and the folder where the installer is going to make some change is having invalid path, you will receive any of the error message mentioned below:
- The folder path ‘program files (x86)’ contains an invalid character
- Error 1324 the path my documents or the volume is invalid
- Error 1324 the path my documents contains an invalid character
- Error 1324 the path my pictures contains an invalid character
Here the folder name will be different from My Documents to Temp, to Program files or anything with the invalid path and will issue Error 1234.
As Windows is one of the most popular operating system, chances are more people will see this error. Based upon our work functions, often we need to install an application on our desktops and laptops in Windows. This is when we encounter with the “Error 1324 saying The Folder Path is containing an Invalid Character“. This is generally triggered by an unacceptable character in the “User Profile”. Here are three ways to solve and overcome this error. Try them and save the charges to be paid to a person for fixing this it.
Method #1 – Install your software in the name of a Different Profile:
Logout from the current user profile you are using and try to install the software in different profile. Here is the brief process to follow if you want to install the software using different profile:
- Hold the Windows Key with pressing “R” on the keyboard to spew the Run dialog.
- Type “logoff”, and enter.
- Try logging in with another user (if accessible). In case you don’t have another account, strive to make another user profile.
- Try installing the software once more.
You can follow the same process by clicking on start menu and log off button. If you want to create new user, goto control penal and create one.
Method #2 – Repair Affected Folders Parth through Registry
- Hold the Windows Key with pressing “R” on the keyboard to spew the Run dialog.
- Type “regedit” and enter, you will be prompt to Registry Editor.
- Circumnavigate to the succeeding location in the Windows Registry:
- CurrentVersion
- Explorer
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- Microsoft
- Shell Folders
- Software
- Windows
- Assess the “Personal” value and validate that the Value data is set to “C:Users<username>Documents”. where it states<username> would be your real username. For instance, if you username is “UserName”, you would require the value to say “C:UsersusernameDocuments”
- Shut the Registry Editor, and then start over desktop/laptop.
- Try installing the software once more.
If you still having the same issue, try the below method which I personally tested and worked perfectly fine.
Way #3 – Eliminate Invalid Character from Registry
Microsoft offers a suggestion that states to eliminate the invalid character from the registry if you know what the invalid character is.
- Hold the Windows Key with pressing “R” on the keyboard to spew the Run dialog.
- Type “regedit” and enter, you will be prompt to Registry Editor.
- Choose “Edit” > “Find”.
- Input the invalid character in the “Find What” box, then pick “Find Next”.
- You will see the value where the invalid character is found. Mostly there will the path of the folder where you are installing the software. Edit the path with valid URL and save it.
- Hold F3 for carry onto another search
Once your search result doesn’t give any data, close RegEdit and restart your computer. Now you can install the software without facing an issue. Follow these ways and you would be through the problem. Share your comments and views in the comment box below. You are also open to suggest another ways to solve the problem.
Note: Please make sure to take backup of your registry file before you make any changes.

In Solution Explorer, select the setup project. In the property window that appears below (just make sure it is visible…) you get a way to change the Manufacturer, which by default is used in the default path of your application.
As an alternative, you may just open the setup project: the File System window appears. Get the properties of «Application Folder» and change «Default Location» so that it becomes «[ProgramFilesFolder][ProductName]»
This will make sure that Manufacturer is no longer part of the path.
