I was helping a friend recently update his Exchange servers. When we launched the cumulative update we ran into this error.

Exchange CU Fails Unable to remove product. Error code is 1603. Error code is 2330.

Last error reported by the MSI package is 'The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2330.'

According to this reference guide from DesktopEngineer.com Error Code 2330 translates to ‘Error getting file attributes’.

Ruh-roh! That sounds like file corruption.

When exploring the Application Log we discovered a number of 10005 MSIINSTALLER errors.

Product: Microsoft Exchange Server -- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2330. The arguments are: 1392, E:Program FilesMicrosoftExchange ServerV15ClientAccessOwaprem15.0.913.22resourcesthemesbaseimages

When we attempted to navigate to this folder we were unable to list its contents. We were, however, able to rename the parent folder. Rerunning the Cumulative Update failed again with the same error. This time Event Viewer indicated a new folder.

Ultimately, the fix was running CHKDSK /R against the volume where Exchange was installed. Once we did this we were able to successfully upgrade to Cumulative Update 8.

Not finished yet

If you do run into this problem (and hopefully this fixes it) there is still one important question to ask; what caused your corruption in the first place?

For us, it was an issue with the virtual environment. But any time you encounter any kind of corruption it’s always best to perform a root cause analysis. Check your logs. Use the tools from your hardware vendor. Be sure to find the cause before it becomes a much bigger problem — like data loss.

I have attempted to install the latest PBI Desktop (x64) release, but get the error code 2330.

PBI error code 2330

According to the Error message explanations this means there is an error getting file attributes. Moreover, it must be an issue with the previous installation, because uninstalling (via Add or remove programs) of the old version leads to exactly the same error. Renaming the old «Microsoft Power BI Desktop» folder does not help; installation in a new folder does not work either. So, my guess is, that there is something in the registry that prevents the install/uninstall of PBI. Any ideas?

There are two methods for you uninstalling previous Power BI Desktop.

1. Install Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on your machine, then use it to remove all the directories related to Power BI.
2. Manually delete all the files in C:Program FilesMicrosoft Power BI Desktopbin Directory. Open regedit and go to following keys one by one, then look for every Power BI Desktop entry and delete them.

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWARE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE
HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTSOFTWARE

After uninstalling previous Power BI Desktop, reboot your machine and reintall Power BI Desktop.

There are two methods for you uninstalling previous Power BI Desktop.

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWARE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE
HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTSOFTWARE

After uninstalling previous Power BI Desktop, reboot your machine and reintall Power BI Desktop.

Thanks for the reply. I figured that might be the case. As this is a PC I use for school work, it is an extensive rework for the issue at hand. (Though, I am curious what it might stem from…)

I will probably just reinstall Windows 7 and rebuild the environment; I have an initial backup image to use to alleviate that portion of the headache. LOL

Ironically, somewhere along the line when the developmental tools had been loaded, this PC broke the homegroup connection. All the PCs can see each other, but this one locks them out.

In the future, I’ll separate things out to another PC for this reason. I didn’t expect to hammer on the Studio like I did this time around.

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply

ask a new question.

I can’t install or uninstall the program without getting this error. It won’t open either. Computer got an error while restoring an iPod and then switched off. The iPod is currently fine, just the iTunes has a problems.

The exact message is:

The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2330

Any solutions?
