About Runtime Code 3163
Runtime Code 3163 happens when Microsoft Access fails or crashes whilst it’s running, hence its name. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the code was corrupt in some way, but just that it did not work during its run-time. This kind of error will appear as an annoying notification on your screen unless handled and corrected. Here are symptoms, causes and ways to troubleshoot the problem.
Definitions (Beta)
Here we list some definitions for the words contained in your error, in an attempt to help you understand your problem. This is a work in progress, so sometimes we might define the word incorrectly, so feel free to skip this section!
- Add — Addition is a mathematical operation that represents combining collections of objects together into a larger collection
- Field — In computer science a field is a smaller piece of data from a larger collection.
Symptoms of Code 3163 — The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add
Runtime errors happen without warning. The error message can come up the screen anytime Microsoft Access is run. In fact, the error message or some other dialogue box can come up again and again if not addressed early on.
There may be instances of files deletion or new files appearing. Though this symptom is largely due to virus infection, it can be attributed as a symptom for runtime error, as virus infection is one of the causes for runtime error. User may also experience a sudden drop in internet connection speed, yet again, this is not always the case.

Causes of The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add — Code 3163
During software design, programmers code anticipating the occurrence of errors. However, there are no perfect designs, as errors can be expected even with the best program design. Glitches can happen during runtime if a certain error is not experienced and addressed during design and testing.
Runtime errors are generally caused by incompatible programs running at the same time. It may also occur because of memory problem, a bad graphics driver or virus infection. Whatever the case may be, the problem must be resolved immediately to avoid further problems. Here are ways to remedy the error.

‘On Error Resume Next
Dim db As DAO.Database
Dim rs As DAO.RecordsetSet db = OpenDatabase(BackEnd, False, False, «MS Access;pwd=» & DBPSW)
Set rs = db.OpenRecordset(«TableNameStr», dbOpenDynaset)
Dim Pdate As Date
Pdate = Date + 6
Luser = LocalUser()
rs.AddNewrs!CDAmt = AmtVar
rs!Code = CodeVar
rs!CDDate = cdDateVar
rs!ExpRDV = ExpVar
rs!DayDiff = 6
rs!SysDate = Date
rs!DateToPay = Pdate
rs!An = AnVar

I get the error message «The field is too small to accept the amount of data you are trying to add. try inserting or pasting less data.» I’m not attempting to run an insert or update query.
Access Help lives up to expectations by just repeating the error message, and the posts I can find on the forum which mention this error all seem to include something about a maximum of 254 characters in a field. None of mine are anywhere near that amount.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
I’ve got a database that’s been in production for two years. This issue has never come up before. I have made no changes to any code or tables affected by any of this.
In code I have the following:
strSql = «INSERT INTO TblMemoRecipient (ActionID, » _
& «EmployeeID, DiscrepancyID, CC, MemoCycle) » _
& «VALUES (» & lngActionID & «, » & rst2!EmployeeID & «, »
& lngDiscrepancyID & «, » & rst2!CC _
& «, » & intMemoCycle & «)»
debug.print strSql
Call db.Execute(strSql, dbFailOnError)
The results of the debug are this:
INSERT INTO TblMemoRecipient (ActionID, EmployeeID, DiscrepancyID, CC, MemoCycle) VALUES (93301, 2, 44561, False, 1)
The execute give me this error:
Error 3163: The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data.
Here’s a description of tblMemoRecipient:
FieldName Type Size
ActionID Long Integer 4
EmployeeID Long Integer 4
DiscrepancyID Long Integer 4
CC Yes/No 1
MemoCycle Long Integer 4
If I copy the SQL into the SQL view of a new query, I get the same error.
If I create a new record I can use values much bigger than those in the SQL statement in each of the Long Integer fields without a problem.
I have compacted and repaired the back end.
I have checked through archives here and at comp.databases.ms-access and found nothing that directly applies to this situation—all of the examples I saw involved the fields actually being too small.
Help files tell me I should be able to get numbers over 2 billion in these fields.
Any help would be very welcome.
Jeremy
PS: Maybe size is an issue, and I’ve just been deluding myself. I certainly would be happy to be wrong about this.

Question
Why can’t I import my data from Pro-Timer? I keep getting the error:
Error 3163 — The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data.
Answer
Remove all special characters from the name specified in the error message.
The Issue
When the import function comes across a special character (any character on the top number line of the keyboard), the process will have difficulty continuing and will issue an error message such as this one.
Removing the special characters will avoid this error.
Workaround
Remove items with special characters from your Pro-timer export file (an IIF format file). (Hosted users should move this file to their local PC)
-
In Windows/File Explorer, open the TimerExport.iif file with Excel;
-
Find the item specified in the error message, take down details of the transaction (or copy to another file);
-
Delete this item from the file;
-
Remove other items that use special characters;
-
Save the file, keeping its IIF format;
-
Import the file again into your Reckon Accounts.
-
Enter manually the transaction/s removed;
-
In Reckon Accounts, modify the name of the item and remove all special characters;
If a customer or supplier name is involved, remove special characters from the address and ship to fields as well.
-
Export new lists to Pro-Timer.
