As mentioned, the 601 error code covers a multitude of sins with no one specific cause (it’s just a boilerplate response the Mogstation/SE Account Management System throws up when something is preventing a credit or debit card transaction from going through. The most common (but by no means only) causes are:
Incorrect card details (usually a mistake in the CVC number on the back of the card)
Internet browser blocking a security script from running that checks the card is valid (Firefox with ad block software or the ‘Noscript’ add on is notorious for this)
Either your bank or the vendor of the card (the credit card company whose logo is on the card, i.e. Mastercard or Visa) is falsely flagging the transaction as possibly fraudulent and blocking the transaction.
If you’re in a different country to where your card’s account is billed from to the country registered in SE account, the SE Account Management System might be blocking it as possibly fraudulent. It basically comes down to a process of elimination to discover the root cause of the issue sadly. There was a very big official thread on the subject with a lot of discussion and possible fixes for some of these causes, which can still be found here.
One final possibility, recently I had the 601 error appear myself when I tried to register a new Visa debit card to my SE Account (because the previous debit card I was using to pay my FFXI and FFXIV fees reached it’s expiry date), after having had no problems with billing since SE scrapped the stupid ClicknBuy system in 1.0, and the cause was ridiculously simple (and was not SE’s fault at all). It was basically my bank’s fault. When I activated the card with my bank, the teller forgot to remove a flag on my bank account that said the old card had expired and that a new one needed to be issued (which it already had), but the flag was not removed automatically and thus needed a teller to remove it manually. Hence it was interfering with online transactions, causing the card to show up as invalid.
A quick trip to my bank and after a few key presses from the teller later the issue was fixed, and when I tried registering my card on the SE Account Management System it worked fine. So although I don’t think your card has the same issue, it shows that often the problem might be on the bank’s end, so you may have to contact your bank directly and see if there is any issues with your card or bank account that might be causing this problem with the SE Account system.

Are you a fan of Final Fantasy XIV by Square Enix and you are getting an error code 601 when trying to make a payment on the mog station using your debit/credit card?
This appears to be a common issue reported by many game lovers quite often on different forums. It’s similar to the error code i2501 reported by users while making payments.
Why is my Square Enix confirmation code not working?
Error 601 usually appears during purchase. It means that your payment is rejected even before it reaches the Square Enix servers.
Some of the reasons why you may encounter Square Enix error 601 are:
- Insufficient funds in the account – You may encounter a payment error if there are not enough funds in the account.
- A temporary issue with your card or bank – Sometimes, payment errors may show up due to a temporary glitch with the debit/credit card or the bank.
- Recurring payments not allowed – If the card does not grant permission for recurring payments.
- If your account is temporarily blocked – Chances are, that your account is temporarily locked off, and hence, you see the error.
- Incorrect card details – If you entered the incorrect card details, mog station would decline your payment.
- Conflicts with the browser addons or extensions – It could be possible that the Square Enix error 601 shows up due to interference caused by the browser addons or extensions.
- If using VPN or proxy – If using a VPN or proxy on your system, it can interfere with the payment process.
How do I fix Square Enix error code 601?
Before you proceed with the primary troubleshooting methods, you may want to try a few preliminary checks to rule out other possibilities:
- Check if your internet connection is up and running.
- Remove any VPN or proxy service.
- Check if the payment details entered are correct.
- Use an alternate browser.
- Check for any server issues with the bank.
If the above steps do not help you fix the issue, here’s what to do.
1. Check for any issues with the debit/credit card
- Make sure your card/bank has enough funds to complete the transaction.
- Check if the card details entered are correct.
- If the card is expiring in the current month, then the FINAL FANTASY XIV game considers the card as expired.
Or, you can simply use another debit/credit card to complete the payment process for Final Fantasy 14.
2. Double-check for any browser issues
- Check if the browser is updated to the latest firmware version.
- Make sure to remove any add-ons or extensions and try again.
- If using Chrome, then disable any browser extensions in incognito mode, and then try making the purchase in incognito mode.
- Use alternate browsers like Firefox, Safari, Brave, etc.

3. Pay through a Steam account
- Go to the Square Enix website and then navigate to the add in-game time through your Steam account in the add game time option on the SE site.
- Here, pay through your Steam account on the steam website itself.
- The SE site will now redirect you to the payment page, and you can now pay using a debit/credit card as a one-time purchase.
You may also test your internet connection speed or use an alternate WiFi network, or a mobile hotspot.
Or, you can use alternative payment methods like buying Crysta through PayPal or using Game Time cards or Amazon Time cards for payment.

I got an e-mail today notifying me that subscription renewal failed. I logged into MogStation and tried the same credit card, as well as 2 other credit cards, resulting in Error 601.
An error has occurred. Please confirm the status of any relevant options and then try again. As repeated registration failure can lead to restrictions being placed on your account, we strongly recommend that you contact the Square Enix Support Center for guidance before attempting to register a Credit/Debit card again. If you are registering a payment method with a payment service provider, please contact them directly. (Error code: 601)
I assume there’s a problem with SE’s payment system. I contacted their e-mail support, but given past reports that getting ahold of support can take days or weeks, I’m not too hopeful. Meanwhile I’m locked out of my account.
Anyone else get this error within the last month?
Edit: I managed to renew my subscription (1-time, non-recurring) by adding Crysta via UltimatePay.

Credit Card Billing & Error Code: (601)
Today after trying and failing to log onto my FFXIV account I checked my email to find the following: Dear silvanesti, Thank you for using the Square Enix Account Management System. Due to a processing error with your payment method, all continuous options for the following service account have been cancelled. The details are as follows. Date: 02/05/2012 To reactivate automatically continuous options, please select «Reactivate» from the relevant service account’s Options List. I was previously using the click and buy system with no problems at all. However when the new payment option of debit/credit card came out about a week ago, I switched over to that. I didn’t experience any problems at the time of changing payment options until today. As the email instructed I followed the steps to reactivate my character. All works well up until the point where I enter my card details. I get a little processing animation like its checking my details then this : So now basically my account has been deactivated, I am unable to reactivate it with a credit card that I know is fine, I have no idea what error code 601 pertains to, and I have been unable to find anything about anyone from the S.E Support Center having fixed this issue. I know I am not the only person with this issue, so I am hoping that someone knows what is going on, and can shed some light on the situation. I would appreciate any information you guys can give me on the problem. Sil~ [+]

The best part is, when you go to the Square Enix Support Center and enter «Error 601», they have no concept what you are talking about. Someone, in another thread, said its because your bank refused a $0.01 charge that Squenix, or their agent, uses to set up the payments. Squenix does have phone support, M — F only.
I fumbled with the credit card thing for 2 hr the other day before giving up… Gonna try it again when it not suck anymore.
Does anyone have a link to a phone number to call square?
Tried registering a different credit card, but I get the same error. Also can’t log on to the Lodestone Forums today lol, yesterday was ok before I posted this same problem in the technical support forums. Anyone reading this check out here as well. It seems there is another thread with people experiencing the same problem but instead of error code 601 they get 105.
Just a little update from my ongoing saga. I received an email from S.E customer support telling me to unregister my credit card. then re-register it, checking to make sure that all the information is correct & that my billing address is correct. I setup everything shortly after the time the new credit card payment option was introduced. However when I went to unregistered my card it tells me that there is no card registered… When I try to enter my credit card details to register it again I get error code 601. It always pops up when trying to verify my credit card. So now there is apparently no card registered to my account & no way of registering it. lol I think if I can’t get this solved in 2 weeks I’ll end my FFXIV gaming life and try another MMORPG.
1. Try pay o IE w/o any lpugins that block sites 2. Verified by Visa .. doh every time you pay bank send message with code on your cellphone you should prove that is really you and then… profit!

(Went through all the same trouble last month, and hoped it’d be fixed this month.) Have you had any success, or heard of anyone who has?
I received a mail from SE about this error code. They told me that if your billing adress is different from you SE account adress OR is different from your bank’s country, this error can happen. (It’s my case since I don’t live in the same country I have my bank account) If it is the same case for you, they said there’s nothing to do except paying by crysta (paypal/click and buy etc)
Same issue to the T. error 601 after waiting for like.. 60 seconds for a option to add a CC comes up. then I get the error the ONLY way I can set this up is through click and buy who errors a lot too when I try it. Not to mention how shady it seems. It tells me to verify and yet everything on the actual site just redirects. I cant find a phone number to call and the forum it says I can fill out just redirects me to my main account page again. id rather pay them up forward. I dont trust CnB and when I tried Ultimate pay they kept sending me mail I was buying large ammounts of crysta that I wasnt and sending me transaction bills. This is kinda BS.. I looked forward to not having to use these companies and if not that use pay pal like the rest of the world.. Its FFXI and verified by visa/secure all over. I swear SE is out to piss the world off sometimes, this comming from a fan of SE…
MalPal said: » Does anyone have a link to a phone number to call square? Have to go to support, tell them your problem THEN fill out a online forum with security questions, THEN you will get a ID number and a phone number you can call. from there you have to call, wait to talk to someone and then give them your ID number to have some total douchebag cut you off, and talk very rudely to you all the while cutting off everything you tell them and pointing the finger at your bank, your CC company, your internet, firewalls but NOT them! haha. Good luck to you friend

HELP!!! Need help with this issue! Anyone that had this error code and fixed it? Called my CC company and they said that although it was approved, the company (playspan) didn’t charge it. Been looking all over the internet about this issue and absolutely NO ONE know what to do! Server: Hades Game: FFXI Posts: 367
Guys I FIXED MY PROBLEM WITH ERROR 601 BILLING ISSUES!!! YAY!! I always used UltimatePay via PayPal to pay for crysta. This month I tried, but got the error 601 instead. So I called my CC company and they said they had approved the charge, but the client (UltimatePay) didn’t take the money off me. So I called UltimatePay and a really helpful girl said that it was in their end, that it’s a security measure for preventing UltimatePay and SE from fraud. But that she checked my payment history and it was going to proccess payment. So I bought more crysta while I was with her on the phone and the payment went through! So whoever is having this error 601 when trying to use UltimatePay should give them a call: 1-877-703-6339 Original Post — Hide Today after trying and failing to log onto my FFXIV account I checked my email to find the following: Dear silvanesti, Thank you for using the Square Enix Account Management System.
