The error
I installed Elasticsearch on CentOS using rpm
and am encountering this error when I try to start it via systemctl start elasticsearch
:
Feb 20 21:08:34 server.cberdata.org systemd[1]: Started Elasticsearch.
Feb 20 21:08:34 server.cberdata.org elasticsearch[4226]: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM warning: Cannot open file /var/log/elasticsearch/gc.log due to Permission denied
Feb 20 21:08:51 server.cberdata.org systemd[1]: elasticsearch.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=78/n/a
Feb 20 21:08:51 server.cberdata.org systemd[1]: Unit elasticsearch.service entered failed state.
Feb 20 21:08:51 server.cberdata.org systemd[1]: elasticsearch.service failed.

(which I manually created to see if that would help, but doing so had no effect on the error):
-rwxrwxrwx 1 elasticsearch elasticsearch 0 Feb 20 20:56 gc.log
Setting /var/log
permissions to drwxrwxrwx
appears to fix the problem, but I’m hesitant to do that because it seems insecure and it results in these new errors:
/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: skipping "/var/log/exim_mainlog" because parent directory has insecure permissions (It's world writable or writable by group which is not "root") Set "su" directive in config file to tell logrotate which user/group should be used for rotation.
Am I correct that systemctl
/ systemd
is running this service as the elasticsearch
user? If it’s doing that, how can the owner of the file and its directory, with apparent read/write/execute permissions, not have permission to open that file?
If I comment out the UpdateLogFile line from /etc/clamav/freshclam.conf
like so…
#UpdateLogFile /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
…then I am able to run sudo freshclam no problem:
/etc/clamav$ sudo freshclam ClamAV update process started at Mon Feb
6 00:17:07 2017 main.cvd is up to date (version: 57, sigs: 4218790,

date (version: 290, sigs: 55, f-level: 63, builder: neo)
However, if I uncomment the UpdateLogFile line in freshclam.conf and run sudo freshclam, I get this:
/etc/clamav$ sudo freshclam
ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!).

-rw-r----- 1 clamav adm 0 Feb 5 22:18 freshclam.log
I spent all day trying solutions mentioned in various forums with no luck.
Here is the version of Ubuntu server I am running:
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
And the engine version of clamav:
Engine version: 0.99.2
Could someone help me?
Stopping the clamav-daemon does not help:
/var/log$ sudo /etc/init.d/clamav-daemon stop
* Stopping ClamAV daemon clamd
[ OK ] /var/log$ sudo freshclam
ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log in append mode (check
permissions!). ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile =
/var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).
The output of sudo lsof | grep clam
is nothing:
/var/log$ sudo lsof | grep clam
/var/log$
It appears that nothing has a lock on /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
Here is the output of sudo service --status-all | grep clamav
, not including the lines that had question marks and were unrelated to clamav:
$ sudo service --status-all | grep clamav
[ - ] clamav-daemon
[ - ] clamav-freshclam
$
Same Can't open /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!)
error when I try to run clamav-daemon:
$ sudo service clamav-daemon start
* Starting ClamAV daemon clamd
ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav/clamav.log in append mode (check permissions!).
ERROR: Can't initialize the internal logger
$
UPDATE: purging and reinstalling clamav
, clamav-freshclam
and clamav-daemon
did not resolve the issue. I still get the same error:
$ sudo freshclam
ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!).
ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile = /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).
$
UPDATE 2: I did a sudo reboot
, stopped clamav-freshclam
, made sure sudo lsof | grep clam
returned nothing and that the output of sudo service --status-all | grep clamav
still only had minus symbols next to clamav
and clamav-daemon
. Ran sudo freshclam
again, and same error as above (again).
/etc/cron.daily/freshclam:
ERROR: Problem with internal logger
(UpdateLogFile = /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).ERROR: Can’t open
/var/log/clamav/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!).
/var/log/clamav/
/var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
/var/lib/clamav/
chown clam.clam «$LOG_FILE»
#!/bin/sh
### A simple update script for the clamav virus database.
### This could as well be replaced by a SysV script.### fix log file if needed
LOG_FILE=»/var/log/clamav/freshclam.log»
if [ ! -f «$LOG_FILE» ]; then
touch «$LOG_FILE»
chmod 644 «$LOG_FILE»
chown clam.clam «$LOG_FILE»
fi/usr/bin/freshclam
—quiet
—datadir=»/var/lib/clamav»
—log=»$LOG_FILE»
Изменить в файле /etc/freshclam.conf строку
DatabaseOwner clamav
на
DatabaseOwner clam
Изменить /etc/cron.daily/freshclam, добавив в него строку:
—datadir=»/var/lib/clamav»
….
….
….
/usr/bin/freshclam
—quiet
—user=clam
—datadir=»/var/lib/clamav»
—log=»$LOG_FILE»

Joomla 3.

public $log_path
public $tmp_path

старые пути /home/u385377/ИМЯ_САЙТА/www/logs’
/var/www/alco/data/www/ИМЯ_САЙТА/logs

ERROR
Invalid login
Joomla_3.4.8-Stable-Update_Package.zip
I have a simple LAMP stack on CentOS setup. Apache is setup with vhosts and each developer has their web files inside their user folder. The directory structure is like so (for the user test
):
/home/test
|_ apache
|_ domain1.com
|_ backups
|_ conf
|_ vhost.conf
|_ logs
|_ errors.log
|_ images.log
|_ web.log
|_ private
|_ public
The vhost config is in the vhost.conf file. The log files in logs don’t exist when the config is first setup, and this throws an error with apache when I run service httpd restart
:
(13)Permission denied: httpd: could not open error log file /home/test/apache/domain1.com/logs/error.log.
Unable to open logs
I tried running httpd -X
as root and it created the log files (with root ownership/group). I thought it would be a case of making sure that the files are there, with group set as apache
and writeable (so I don’t have to make the whole directory belong to apache
group and writeable), but this confuses me:
[root@dev logs]# ls -al
total 16
drwxr-xr-x. 2 test developers 4096 Apr 18 21:02 .
drwxr-xr-x. 8 test developers 4096 Apr 18 20:25 ..
-rw-r--r--. 1 test developers 1818 Apr 18 21:02 error.log
-rw-r--r--. 1 test developers 14 Apr 18 20:25 .gitignore
-rw-r--r--. 1 test developers 0 Apr 18 20:54 image.log
[root@dev logs]# service httpd restart
Stopping httpd: [ OK ]
Starting httpd: [FAILED]
[root@dev logs]# touch web.log
[root@dev logs]# chown test:developers web.log
[root@dev logs]# service httpd restart
Stopping httpd: [FAILED]
Starting httpd: [ OK ]
I’m confused because apache runs as user apache
and shouldn’t have write access on the logs, should it? In fact, I can even do this:
[root@dev logs]# rm -f ./*.log
[root@dev logs]# touch {error.log,image.log,web.log}
[root@dev logs]# ls -al
total 12
drwxr-xr-x. 2 test developers 4096 Apr 18 21:10 .
drwxr-xr-x. 8 test developers 4096 Apr 18 20:25 ..
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 0 Apr 18 21:10 error.log
-rw-r--r--. 1 test developers 14 Apr 18 20:25 .gitignore
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 0 Apr 18 21:10 image.log
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 0 Apr 18 21:10 web.log
[root@dev logs]# service httpd restart
Stopping httpd: [ OK ]
Starting httpd: [ OK ]
I now have log files owned by root and it still starts up — and it writes to them too — if I tail web.log and browse to that page the logs start showing up.
I’m obviously not quite grasping something here, so what am I missing? I would prefer not to have to create the log files manually and allow apache to do that itself, but regardless, I’d just like to understand why this is happening — especially when I get round to allowing PHP to mess with files.
Update
As requested, here is what I see in audit.log
when I try start apache when the logfiles don’t exist:
type=AVC msg=audit(1397906748.752:49390): avc: denied { write } for pid=19433 comm="httpd" name="logs" dev=md2 ino=7210204 scontext=unconfined_u:system_r:httpd_t:s0 tcontext=unconfined_u:object_r:user_home_t:s0 tclass=dir
type=SYSCALL msg=audit(1397906748.752:49390): arch=c000003e syscall=2 success=no exit=-13 a0=7f9bb740e598 a1=80441 a2=1b6 a3=752e6f632e74756f items=0 ppid=19432 pid=19433 auid=0 uid=0 gid=0 euid=0 suid=0 fsuid=0 egid=0 sgid=0 fsgid=0 tty=pts1 ses=128 comm="httpd" exe="/usr/sbin/httpd" subj=unconfined_u:system_r:httpd_t:s0 key=(null)
When running with the logs existing nothing else is added to the log. The Permission denied: httpd: could not ...
error was from the general log.
As any geek knows, one of the first things that you do when troubleshooting a Windows problem is look into Event Viewer’s Application or System logs, which typically are rich with information on what the problem is. But what if the event log itself is corrupted?
I came across this exact situation the other day, where I was getting the error “Event Viewer cannot open the event log or custom view. Verify that Event Log service is running. The data is invalid (13)”… but the error only happened when trying to open the System log, while the Application log was working just fine, and restarting Event Log or rebooting didn’t help.
What you can do in this situation is clear the system log, saving it to a file in the process. This will usually “reset” the log so that future events will be viewable.
Clearing the System Log
Here’s an example of the error message that I’ve been getting:
You can right-click on any of the logs and choose “Clear Log” from the menu.
You’ll want to choose “Save and Clear” when prompted just in case you need to access those events.
Give the logfile a useful name, and then click the Save button to continue. Note that you probably won’t be able to open the log with Event Viewer, but you could open it in a text editor and try and find some information in it.
Now that I’ve cleared the log, you can see that I’m able to view the events in the System log again.
Extra Note: The problem I was encountering ended up being because I had 9 USB devices plugged into a machine with a very pathetic power supply. Moving the devices onto a Powered USB hub fixed the problem, and I’ve since upgraded the power supply.
