How to fix error code 17 on Hikvision devices

This article will explain how to fix the “Error code 17” that shows usually when you try to live view your Hikvision surveillance system or a single Hikvision IP camera.

Error code 17 shows up when you are trying to connect to a Hikvision device (IP camera, DVR, NVR) using the smartphone app iVMS-4500, or the Hikvision computer software iVMS-4200.

Usually, this error shows up randomly and suddenly, meaning without any modification of the configuration settings. Simply out of blue will display “error code 17”.

Based on HikVision’s official SDK explanation, Error Code 17 means: “NET_DVR_PARAMETER_ERROR: Parameter error. Input or output parameter in the SDK API is NULL”. In general, this “Error Code 17” means the internet connection with your CCTV system is having an issue.

The client, which is your smartphone, or computer, couldn’t communicate with the server, which is the IP Camera, or DVR, or NVR, due to a parameter error in the configuration. The recording is still working fine. You won’t lose any important video records because of this error code.

1. Make sure the DDNS service you’re using is working properly. Don’t leave the subnet mask empty, use the Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8 and Alternate DNS 8.8.4.4 (on the Settings > Network settings).

2. Restart (power cycle) your Hikvision NVR/DVR or IP camera. The reboot will refresh your IP address, which usually resolves the issue.

3. Sometimes this error shows up due to extra spaces in the IP address. When typing the IP address in the Hikvision iVMS-4500 phone app (or iVMS-4200 for the computer) make sure there’s no extra space in the IP address field, because that can be misinterpreted by the software.

Note in the picture above there’s an extra space after the number 457 which is causing the error code 17. Make sure to eliminate such unnecessary space.

The IP address must be continuous with numbers and dots without any spaces or other symbols. This kind of mistake is more likely to happen if you have the predictive text enabled on your smartphone. Always double-check the IP address after typing it.

4. Hikvision IP cameras and recorders (DVR, NVR) using old firmware can present issues related to the network connection. Make sure you to update your devices to the latest firmware.

5. Make sure the last version of the Hikvision iVMS-4500 smartphone app and iVMS-4200 software (for computers) is installed on your smartphone/computer.

Hikvision error code 17 indicates an error generated by a wrong IP configuration or a problem related to an incorrect name resolution. It usually happens when the wrong IP is entered in the iVMS-4500 App or when the DNS is not configured or working properly.

If the IP address is not correctly configured in the Hikvision iVMS-4500 App the error code 17 is displayed on the screen even in a local installation.

In the diagram, you can see a DVR connected to a router in a local network where the mobile phone has access via Wi-Fi.

You need to make sure the IP range is correctly configured on both devices (DVR and mobile) to guarantee the correct IP communication.

When entering the IP address in the Hikvision iVMS-4500 App make sure there’s no extra space in the field, because that can cause the error.

Note in the picture above that an extra space after the number 168 is the cause of the Error Code 17. Make sure to eliminate such space.

The IP address must be continuous with numbers and dots without spaces.

Some mobile phones have a problem with the predictive text that makes hard to type the IP address without having the extra space.

Hikvision Error Code 17 IP Address

Hikvision error code 17 indicates an error generated by a wrong IP configuration or a problem related to an incorrect name resolution. It usually happens when the wrong IP is entered in the iVMS-4500 App or when the DNS is not configured or working properly.

If the IP address is not correctly configured in the Hikvision iVMS-4500 App the error code 17 is displayed on the screen even in a local installation.

In the diagram, you can see a DVR connected to a router in a local network where the mobile phone has access via Wi-Fi. 

You need to make sure the IP range is correctly configured on both devices (DVR and mobile) to guarantee the correct IP communication.

Error due to the extra space in the  IP address

When entering the IP address in the Hikvision iVMS-4500 App make sure there’s no extra space in the field, because that can cause the error.

Note in the picture above that an extra space after the number 168 is the cause of the Error Code 17. Make sure to eliminate such space.

The IP address must be continuous with numbers and dots without spaces.

Some mobile phones have a problem with the predictive text that makes hard to type the IP address without having the extra space.

If that’s your case, just go to the mobile keyboard configuration settings and disable the Predictive text (see the pictures below).

Error due to a wrong IP address

The error code 17 can also be generated due to the use of a wrong IP address. Make sure you have entered the IP address correctly.

Note in the picture below that the IP address ends in 340 and that is not right because this IP Address does not exist according to the standards.

For this particular case, the IP address should be 192.168.2.140

Remember that you must follow the IP address universal standard and also make sure the IP camera or DVR/NVR has the correct configuration.

Sometimes the IP camera or the recorder is using the correct IP but has a wrong subnet mask. Double check the configuration on the device.

Reboot  your devices

After checking the configuration in both devices you can just reboot the IP camera or recorder and also the mobile phone just to make sure everything is fresh and can work properly.

A reboot can clean the cache memory and reload the services which make most of the systems work better. 

Name resolution (DDNS) problems

If you are trying to access your IP camera or recorder remotely through the Internet with a DDNs service (Hikvision HiDDNS) make sure everything is configured correctly on both sides.

You also need to make sure the last version of the Hikvision iVMS-4500 Apps installed on your mobile. Just open the Play Store or Apple Store and look for the App, if a new version is available you can update yours.

This article will explain how to fix the “Error code 17” that shows usually when you try to live view your Hikvision surveillance system or a single Hikvision IP camera.

Error code 17 shows up when you are trying to connect to a Hikvision device (IP camera, DVR, NVR) using the smartphone app iVMS-4500, or the Hikvision computer software iVMS-4200.

Usually, this error shows up randomly and suddenly, meaning without any modification of the configuration settings. Simply out of blue will display “error code 17”.

Based on HikVision’s official SDK explanation, Error Code 17 means: “NET_DVR_PARAMETER_ERROR: Parameter error. Input or output parameter in the SDK API is NULL”. In general, this “Error Code 17” means the internet connection with your CCTV system is having an issue.

The client, which is your smartphone, or computer, couldn’t communicate with the server, which is the IP Camera, or DVR, or NVR, due to a parameter error in the configuration. The recording is still working fine. You won’t lose any important video records because of this error code.

So what has caused the error?

In a little detail, “Error Code 17” often means the IP address of your CCTV devices (IP Camera, DVR, NVR) can’t be resolved correctly, for whatever possible reasons. Check if you have update for iVMS4500 software. Another thing:make sure you have port 554 forwarded in your router.

Strange… Do you have any problems if you use the latest iVMS4200 software for PC? How many cameras do you have in the network? Do you get the same error for all the cams?
Here are some other tips:
— Make sure you use the latest firmware for the cameras in case you use English firmware (Chinese version is a different story).
— For iVMS4500: try clearing app data and cache.
— I’m still thinking of port 554 might be the problem. In case you have more than one camera in your network, you should change port 554 for all the cams, preferably starting above 1024, like IP1 — 1024, IP2 — 1025, etc.
— Also try disabling UPnP in the NAT network settings for all the cams, then reboot. Sometimes that could mess up the things.
