The trip odometer trigger switch is located in the left hand control module.
The switch signal is sent to the speedometer over the CAN bus.
If there is a problem with the CAN bus, the odometer self-diagnostic mode maynot function.
For a quick check of instrument function, perform a «WOW» test by entering odometer self-diagnostics.
Background lighting will illuminate, gauge needles will sweep their full range of motion and all indicator lamps
controlled by the CAN circuit will illuminate.
If the instrument fails «WOW» test, check for battery power and ground to the instrument.
If any feature in the speedometer is non-functional, see Description and Operation.

DISCLAIMER: this information is for reference only. Fuel Moto does not offer technical support for diagnostic trouble codes. The following procedure will instruct in retrieving and clearing ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes and TSM/TSSM codes through the Harley gauge cluster as well as a list of codes.
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold. For 2014 & newer touring models this will be the toggle switch on the left control mount.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release the odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word «diag» should then appear.
4 — Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu «PSSPt» with the first P flashing.
5 — Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM(Electronic Control Module)[EFI] /Ignition Control Module[Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 — To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word «none» will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.
7 — Record the codes.
8 — If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until ‘clear’ comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 — Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 — Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer «No Rsp» will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.
«No Rsp» (no response) will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

Oh no. We’ve all been there. The check engine light (CEL) on your dash illuminates, and your Harley-Davidson isn’t running right. Or, what might be even more confusing, the light comes on but the bike seems completely fine. What should you
do, what does it mean? Is this cause for a tow? Can the bike operate normally until you can get it into a shop?
These questions are very common when a Harley-Davidson check engine light stays on. Keep reading below for information about how to determine which trouble code is associated with the CEL.
What Does a Check Engine Light Mean?
An illuminated check engine light is an indication that the motorcycle’s onboard diagnostic system detects a current or historic trouble code, known as diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).
Once exclusive to the automotive industry, motorcycle manufacturers like Harley-Davidson rely on onboard diagnostics to assist owners and technicians when a fault occurs.
Prior to electronic fuel injection (EFI), motorcycles had few, if any, sensors or complicated electronic equipment. Over the years, manufacturers like Harley-Davidson transitioned to fuel injection for a variety of reasons, including reliability, simplicity,
fuel economy/emissions, and performance.
While this transition to EFI gave riders a simpler and more enjoyable ownership experience, it also made diagnostic work more challenging. Following the trend of automotive manufacturers, motorcycle manufacturers like Harley-Davidson adopted the standardized
SAE convention for identifying and labeling onboard faults.
If the vehicle’s electronic control module detects an error within the system, it “throws a code,” causing the check engine light to illuminate. A DTC is directional information for an owner or technician to begin diagnostic work. The
presence of a code doesn’t mean you should start replacing parts. A Harley-Davidson dealership service department or other qualified technician is your best bet if you are not comfortable or experienced with diagnosing electrical issues.
Harley trouble codes categories: (categories may vary based on model year and options)
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Body Control Module (BCM)
- Speedometer (SPDO)
- Radio (RAD)
- Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
- Turn Signal Security Module (TSSM)
All fuel-injected motorcycles have the ability to communicate trouble codes. However, some bikes require an external diagnostic tool. Luckily, H motorcycles have the ability to display Harley error codes right on the dash, no tool required!
To enter the diagnostic system and retrieve a trouble code, hold down the trip reset button while turning the ignition from off to on. This will allow you to cycle through the categories, and see which one indicates a code.
Harley Davidson Code List Categories
Trouble codes fall into one of three categories:
- Current
- Historic
- Pending
Current codes display when the system detects an active fault. Simply clearing the code won’t resolve the issue, as the code will return once enough drive cycles occur in which the system recognizes the fault again.
Historic codes remain saved until they are intentionally cleared or roughly 40 ignition cycles (on/off) without recurrence. Historic codes assist with intermittent issues or faults.
Pending codes record when the system detects a fault but the fault has not occurred during enough drive cycles to set at current. If the fault resolves itself, the code will become a historic code, skipping current status.
How to Display Trouble Codes
Using the trip reset button, a Harley-Davidson owner can cycle through codes in each of the code categories and note the DTC itself. Listed below are possible codes and their meanings. Please note that not all codes will apply to every model based on
year and options.
How to access codes without a diagnostic tool:
- Start with a known good battery and secure battery terminals
- Set run/stop switch to run position
- Hold down the trip reset button while turning the ignition to on position
- Click the trip button to cycle through modules and hold down trip button to display codes (displayed text will vary based on year and model)
Newer bikes display abbreviations to represent each module:
- ECM: Electronic Control Module
- BCM: Body Control Module
- SPDO: Speedometer
- RAD: Radio
Older bikes display letters to represent each module:
- P: ECM
- S: TSM/TSSM
- SP: Speedometer
- T: Tachometer
- B: ABS module
The onboard diagnostic system will also display a part number that corresponds to the trouble code, and it will allow you to clear the code. This part can be a bit tricky, since the part associated with the displayed number isn’t automatically bad.
Also, it’s possible to see multiple codes related to one issue.
Harley-Davidson uses abbreviations in their service manual, owner’s manual and for diagnostic work with trouble codes. We’ve listed common abbreviations and their meanings below:
- ABS: Anti-Lock Braking System
- ACR: Automatic Compression Release
- AFR: Air Fuel Ratio

- VE: Volume Efficiency
- VIN: Vehicle Identification Number
- VSS: Vehicle Speed Sensor
- WSS: Wheel Speed Sensor
These abbreviations, and the accompanying list of trouble codes, can be a great start when your Harley-Davidson check engine light comes on. As mentioned above, if you are not comfortable with electrical diagnostic work, a dealership or qualified technician
can offer assistance. Please keep in mind that even though you have the ability to clear a DTC using the onboard diagnostic feature, you shouldn’t clear the code prior to your service appointment. Let the technician view and clear the codes
as they troubleshoot the issue.

How Does This Apply to a Career in the Field?
Some Harley-Davidson owners perform their own service and repair, but most draw the line at electrical diagnostic work. Technicians who can quickly diagnose and repair electronic system faults are always in demand. Simply observing and identifying a code
isn’t enough to fix a motorcycle with an illuminated check engine light, nor is swapping out parts without a thorough understanding of the root cause of the failure. Like anything else, experience and practice will allow for an entry-level technician
to become a full diagnostic tech.

2000-2004
Enter diagnostic area by turning the ignition from OFF to ON while holding the reset switch in. The normal power-up sequence will occur before entering the diagnostic mode. Diagnostic codes set
during this power-up sequence will be stored as well.
Important Note: Be sure no diagnostic codes are indicated before reset is held in for more than 5 seconds or diagnostic information will be lost.
When in diagnostic mode the odometer will display the first diagnostic code. When the trip switch is pressed again the next code will be shown. If the trip switch is pressed for more than 5
seconds at any time while in the diagnostic mode, the diagnostic code displayed will be erased.
There are 7 different diagnostic codes available. They are as follows:
d01 — Speed sensor power output shorted low
d02 — Speed sensor power output shorted high or open
d03 — Not Used
d04 — Not Used
d05 — Speed sensor return shorted high
d06 — Speed sensor return shorted low
d07 — Not Used
d08 — Speedometer power over voltage
d09 — Speed output shorted high
d10 — Speed output shorted low or open
CAL XX — Speedometer application calibration number:
14 = Domestic
15 = HDI
When in the diagnostic mode, all codes are displayed in sequence from d01 to d10.
As a code appears in the display (for instance d02), it will read «d02Set» if set or «d02CLr» if clear.
The diagnostic mode is exited either by turning ignition from ON to OFF to ON again without depressing the reset switch or if a speed signal greater than 5 MPH is detected.
Diagnostics cannot be performed if system voltage is less than 9 VDC or greater than 16 VDC. The only exception is d08 which is set when system voltage is greater than 16 VDC.
After all the diagnostic codes are displayed, the speedometer calibration number is displayed (CAL 14 for example).
2005-2008
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run / Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security,
low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.
4 — Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu «PSSPt» with the first P flashing.
5 — Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer
reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM / ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM / TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 — To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will
appear if there are no DTC’s.
Release the
odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer «No Rsp» will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.
«No Rsp» will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

There are a few Harley Davidson fault codes that you may encounter. In 1982, the Harley Davidson Motor Company began using a standardized diagnostic system for their motorcycles. This system is known as DTCs, or Diagnostic Trouble Codes. DTCs are designated by a P,C,B or U. The letter denotes the system that the code is related to. For example, a P code is a Powertrain code, while a U code is a Utility code.
If your Harley Davidson experiences any of these faults, don’t panic! There are ways to troubleshoot and hopefully repair them. The first step is to research the code and see what it means. There are many online resources that can help with this, including Harley Davidson’s own website. Once you have an idea of what might be causing the problem, you can start troubleshooting.

One of the unique features of Harley-Davidson® motorcycle is the ability to display codes right on the dash, no tool required! This makes it easy to diagnose any problems that may arise. To enter the diagnostic system and retrieve a trouble code, hold down the trip reset button.
To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be shown on the display. The diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) can help with troubleshooting problems with your motorcycle. The Harley trouble codes will be displayed as a letter and a number. For Harley Davidson motorcycles, there are two types of codes- engine and ABS/DSC. To clear the codes, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release.
03-07 HD DTC Codes and Activation
The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC’s (diagnostic trouble codes).
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.
4 — Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu «PSSPt» with the first P flashing.
5 — Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted)
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 — To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s.
Also if the code set is a historic code (not a constant light) after 50 start and run cycles of at least 30 seconds each in duration, the light will extinguish itself as long as the error hasn’t occurred again.
If it were a current code, the light would remain lit while running.

————————
AFR – Air Fuel Ratio
ATS – Air Temperature Sensor
BAS – Bank Angle Sensor
CCM – Cruise Control Module
CKP – Crank Position Sensor. The CKP generates an “AC signal” which is sent to the ECM where it is used to reference engine position (TDC) and speed. Home position established by taking readings off the 22 teeth on the alternator rotor.
DTC – Diagnostic Trouble Codes
ECM – Electronic Control Module. (The Computer) Computes the spark advance for proper ignition timing and fuel control based on sensor inputs (from CKP, MAP & TP sensors) and controls the low-voltage circuits for the ignition coils and injectors. The dwell time for the ignition coil is also calculated in the microprocessor and is dependent upon battery voltage. The programmed dwell feature gives adequate spark at all speeds.
ECT – Engine Coolant Temperature. Sensor also controls the cooling fan relay that provides 12 Vdc to the fans.
EFI – Electronic Fuel Injection
EFP – Electronic Fuel Pump
ET – Engine Temperature sensor
FI – Fuel Injectors
FPR – Fuel Pressure regulator
IAC – Idle Air Control actuator
IAT – Intake Air Temperature sensor
ISS – Ion Sensing System…detonation detection
MAP – manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. The MAP sensor monitors the intake manifold pressure (vacuum) and sends the information to the ECM. The EMC then adjusts the spark and fuel-timing advance curves for optimum performance.
TP – Throttle Position Sensor
TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
VE – Volume Efficiency
VSS – Vehicle Speed Sensor. Used as an input for idle speed control

The odometer trigger switch is located in the left control box.
The switchingsignal is transmitted to the speedometer via the CANbus.
If there is a problem with the CANbus, the odometer self-diagnosis mode may not work.
To quickly check the operation of the device, perform the «W0W» test by entering the odometer self-diagnosis.
Background lighting will come on, the instrument needles will move in full range, and all indicators will light up.
controlled by the CANcircuit will light up.
If the instrument fails the «W0W» test, check battery power and instrument ground.
If any function of the speedometer does not work, please refer to Description and operation.
