Re: [solved] gparted error

You need a polkit authentication agent running. Something like lxpolkit, polkit-kde, polkit-gnome, etc

Re: [solved] gparted error

I found the issue:

polkit-gnome executes policykit agent only in a gnome session
because the .desktop file contains

now I installed (beside polkit-gnome) lxpolkit

result: now gparted_polkit asks the password but when I type it, return another error:

[mattia@arch-dekstop ~]$ gparted_polkit
Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

how can I solve it?

sure, this is the way I used since I installed gparted: open a terminal and launch gparted with sudo
that is slower than click on the menu icon

Re: [solved] gparted error

You can have only one of the two packages installed. Using both they will block each other.
On XFCE I stayed with polkit-gnome and created the dektopfile in /.config/autostart.
Polkit-Gnome.desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=0.9.4
Type=Application
Name=Polkit-Gnome
Comment=
Exec=/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
OnlyShowIn=XFCE;
StartupNotify=false
Terminal=false
Hidden=false

Maybe it works also with your DE or WM.

Re: [solved] gparted error

No problems here. I can run gparted_polkit just fine using polkit-gnome under bspwm. This is how I start it in my .xinitrc:
/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

What wm are you using and how do you start lxpolkit?

Re: [solved] gparted error

sure! I summarize:
even though I had a policykit agent installed (polkit-gnome)
gparted_polkit hasn’t work
the problem was that polkit-gnome starts the agent at startup ONLY in a GNOME environment
so, I that use openbox, I didn’t have any agent
the solution for polkit-gnome and consequently gparted_polkit problem is to start manually the policykit agent, how do it has no importance.
personally I already use the autostart file of openbox for other thing, so it was easy add the line

/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

in it

Pednick, please do not «necrobump» old threads, especially solved ones.  Also I don’t see the vaguest connection between your issue and the one in this thread.  Please start a new thread if you want help with your issue.

[SOLVED] gparted won’t start (polkit problem)

When I try to execute the command from gparted desktop file in terminal, I get this output.

I do have polkit installed and tried to run «/usr/libexec/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1», but that didn’t help.

WM: i3

It’s not that big of a deal. I can always run ‘sudo gparted’ from the terminal.
But ‘gparted_polkit’ should use polkit to ask for root password, right?

Authentication agent on XRDP

I’m trying to set up a headless server on which I need to connect remotely to the server and virtual machines (host and client running Arch) using XRDP(server) and Windows Remote Desktop(client), everything is good until I need to run software than need authentication agents, ie: gparted, virt-manager and/or gnome keyring ie: github desktop, I need to know if there is a way I have 3 days trying it everything I found on Internet, until today I’ve tried on Gnome, KDE Plasma, LXqt, XFCE, Openbox, I3, no matter what I do on my .xinitrc I currently have:

#!/bin/bash
.
/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &
exec dbus-run-session startxfce4

When I run Gpard on terminal this is the output:
Error executing command as another user: No authentication agent found.

If I try to manually run gnome polkit agent from /usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 I got:
polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:2125): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **: 17:59:07.470: Unable to determine the session we are in: No session for pid 2125.

Hope you could give me some advice, before throwing my server through the window.

No polkit authentication agent found since 9.0.0 #105

sudo-prompt exec fails with «no polkit authentication agent found» on 9.0.0 but succeeds on 8.2.0.

Steps to Reproduce:

This is occurring on a Chromebook but you may be able to repro on any Debian container with the same packages. Installed packages. Passwordless sudo is enabled for all users.

See https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=995175 for some more context, exact Chrome OS version and platform, and other details.

The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:

Thanks @feileacan for the detailed report.

Please would you try rebooting your system and then running the test script for 9.0.0 before doing anything else?

This might have something to do with these issues:

In addition to rebooting and running the test script (Option 1 above), please would you also try the following:

Option 1: Same issue
Option 2: Prompts for password. Pressing enter then results in auth failure:

The account has no password:

The account is locked by default, but I see the same error for unlocked: :: or :*:

If I set a password I get a different error:

There’s no graphical agent installed so pkexec failing when using —disable-internal-agent is expected, but not sure what changed between 8.2.0 and 9.0.0 that it’s no longer able to auth.

Thanks @feileacan, option 2 is almost exactly what 8.2.0 does, except that 8.2.0 first tries to execute the command with sudo -n :

Also, given that «passwordless sudo is enabled for all users» as you say, pkexec shouldn’t be failing for you like it did in option 2 with Error executing command as another user: Not authorized .

I think then that this commit is what caused the issue in pkexec with passwordless sudo environments to be exposed: 8c1a302

It’s not a bug in sudo-prompt, but an interaction between passwordless sudo being allowed and pkexec. I will see how we can workaround this.

The change in 8c1a302 was necessary to fix a serious idempotency issue.

You might want to take this up in the Chromium issue. This should never fail for a valid password:

Ah, not running via sudo would do it.

As far as I can tell policykit uses its own rules so pkexec doesn’t care whether the user has sudo access or not, it still requires auth: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/polkit/polkit/blob/master/actions/org.freedesktop.policykit.policy.in#L13

Adding a rule for policykit.exec means users are no longer prompted which gets things working again.

As regards the pkexec «No session for cookie» issue, looks like the same problem discussed in NixOS/nixpkgs#18012, using a separate pkttyagent works.

[SOLVED] I am not administrator in KDE!

Hi,
I just installed arch linux with KDE.
At the time of writing this, I do not have a monitor, but did have a TV. I tested the installation on the TV, but I cannot work on the TV. So I setup chrome-remote-desktop to work with my laptop and the newly installed arch linux computer with the TV.
It seems to be working, without the TV.

I began customising KDE in system settings, then noticed that I cannot customising the login screen.
System Settings -> Startup and Shutdown -> Login Screen (SDDM)
Under the heading Login Screen, I see » You are not allowed to «You are not allowed to save the configuration».
Why is this the case?

Another Observation:
I tried to connect to wifi, (was using cable before) but see this notification: «org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.network-control request failed: not authorized»

But when I got to System Settings -> Account Details -> User Manger -> : I see that «Enable administrator privileges for this user» is checked.
Is this because I have Chrome Remote Desktop running?
Thanks

You need a polkit authentication agent running. Something like lxpolkit, polkit-kde, polkit-gnome, etc

Re: [solved] gparted error

I found the issue:

polkit-gnome executes policykit agent only in a gnome session
because the .desktop file contains

now I installed (beside polkit-gnome) lxpolkit

result: now gparted_polkit asks the password but when I type it, return another error:

how can I solve it?

Re: [solved] gparted error

sure, this is the way I used since I installed gparted: open a terminal and launch gparted with sudo
that is slower than click on the menu icon
. now I want to fix it.

Re: [solved] gparted error

You can have only one of the two packages installed. Using both they will block each other.
On XFCE I stayed with polkit-gnome and created the dektopfile in /.config/autostart.
Polkit-Gnome.desktop:

Pednick, please do not «necrobump» old threads, especially solved ones. Also I don’t see the vaguest connection between your issue and the one in this thread. Please start a new thread if you want help with your issue.

No authentication agent found

#1

Post

If I try to use pkexec:

Code: Select all

==== AUTHENTICATING FOR org.freedesktop.policykit.exec ===
Authentication is needed to run `/usr/bin/env' as the super user
Authenticating as: root
Password:
polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie
==== AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===
Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

This incident has been reported.

If I try to use an app that requires privileges:

Code: Select all

gparted
Error executing command as another user: No authentication agent found.

I have lxpolkit, libpolkit-agent-1-0, and ibpolkit-gobject-1-0 installed.
I installed gnome polkit but didn’t work and I removed it.

What packages do I need?

Beyond the required packages you need to actually configure it all.

Look into /etc/polkit-1/…
With Root you create the permission pkla file in /localauthority

The directories there are in priority, add where you like…
*users.pkla

Code: Select all

[User Permissions]
Identity=unix-user:Scorpian;
Action=org.gnome.gparted;
ResultActive=yes

*users should be ##-something.pkla, like 50-me.pkla
as user to see what you can add to the list
pkaction -l

Do I need to configure all apps manually? And what about pkexec?

Yes, all in one line

Code: Select all

Action=org.gnome.gparted;something;something-else;and-so-on;

pkexec is part of this, usage not perfectly consistent. Some things are called by others, some things have an executable for the user that calls it. pkexec is not used like sudo, but similar. Most packages are configured to use it already and only user configuration for permission is needed, when using provided menu entries graphically. cli use of pkexec ‘something’ isn’t really necessary.

When you configure it like I showed it will not ask for a password, you can configure it to.

Can I install something that configure all automatically?

Not that I know of, no.

I have typed before that a polkit configuration should be included in an install step similar to whatever root/no root sudo auto add thing, but I’m not an install expert. I suppose it could be some preseed of some kind. I know it can be configured via image while not running using guestfs.

With this I can use gparted and pkexec without having to authenticate, did I enable all as I wanted to?

This allow me to use pkexec:

Code: Select all

Action=org.freedesktop.policykit.exec;

Also for curiosity can I make it ask for password?
Can I add more users in the same file?

That doesn’t work:

Code: Select all

gparted
Error executing command as another user: No authentication agent found.

No way to get the lxpolkit prompt so, good thing that was just for testing.

root can use pkexec without an entry in the pkla file (/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/50-users.pkla in my case).

Option 1: Same issue
Option 2: Prompts for password. Pressing enter then results in auth failure:

aryanonametyrell@penguin:~$ "/usr/bin/pkexec" /bin/bash -c "echo SUDOPROMPT; echo hello"
==== AUTHENTICATING FOR org.freedesktop.policykit.exec ===
Authentication is needed to run `/bin/bash' as the super user
Authenticating as: aryanonametyrell
Password:

polkit-agent-helper-1: pam_authenticate failed: Authentication failure
==== AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===
Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

This incident has been reported.

The account has no password:

aryanonametyrell@penguin:~$ sudo grep $USER /etc/shadow
aryanonametyrell:!:18150:0:99999:7:::

The account is locked by default, but I see the same error for unlocked: :: or :*:

If I set a password I get a different error:

aryanonametyrell@penguin:~$ "/usr/bin/pkexec" /bin/bash -c "echo SUDOPROMPT; echo hello"
==== AUTHENTICATING FOR org.freedesktop.policykit.exec ===
Authentication is needed to run `/bin/bash' as the super user
Authenticating as: aryanonametyrell
Password:
polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie
==== AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===
Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

This incident has been reported.

Option 3:

aryanonametyrell@penguin:~$ "/usr/bin/pkexec" --disable-internal-agent /bin/bash -c "echo SUDOPROMPT; echo hello"
Error executing command as another user: No authentication agent found.

Option 4:

aryanonametyrell@penguin:~$ export SUDO_PROMPT_TEST_ENV="hello"
aryanonametyrell@penguin:~$ "/usr/bin/pkexec" --disable-internal-agent /bin/bash -c "echo SUDOPROMPT; echo "$SUDO_PROMPT_TEST_ENV""
Error executing command as another user: No authentication agent found.

There’s no graphical agent installed so pkexec failing when using —disable-internal-agent is expected, but not sure what changed between 8.2.0 and 9.0.0 that it’s no longer able to auth.

Using CentOS Release 6.4 x86 when I go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software and try to add software or refresh the package list, I immediately get the following error:

Authorization Failed

Authorization Failed

You have failed to provide correct authentication. Please check any passwords or account settings.

Failed to obtain authentication

However the reason I failed to provide authentication is because I was never asked for a password at all. I’m running as a normal user who is a member of the wheel group and can run commands via sudo. I also can su to root. I am able to install software via yum.

How can I fix the issue where Add/Remove Software never asks for a password?

UPDATE: The issue appears to be with PolicyKit. Specifically, I have no authentication agent running and trying to start it results in the error

I have an Ubuntu 16.04 headless system that I recently installed xfce4 and vnc4server onto. I can connect via VNC and see the desktop, but trying to launch privileged apps such as Synaptic silently fails.

Checking the synaptic.desktop entry shows use of synaptic-pkexec, which is just a small wrapper script for using pkexec.

Running the desktop entry directly shows the issue:

$ pkexec --disable-internal-agent "/usr/sbin/synaptic" "$@"
Error executing command as another user: No authentication agent found.

Question is — how do I resolve this? I’m new to PolicyKit, and I’m a bit surprised that apt install xfce4 apparently did not setup an authentication agent. Or perhaps I’m not automatically starting the desktop properly — here’s my startup script:

~$ cat .vnc/xstartup
#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
# x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
x-window-manager &
startxfce4 &

Why do I get this service error: «error executing command as another user: no authentication agent found» when registering MATLAB Web Apps service

Carlos

Hi. I am trying to install MATLAB Web App Server in an Azure Linux Virtual Machine. These are the steps I followed:

1- Installed MATLAB Run Time

2- Copied MATLABWebAppServer.zip from a Linux machine that had MATLAB Compiler product installed and unzip it.

3- After that, I ran the server application by typing run_MATLABWebAppServer.sh <MATLAB_Runtime_Location> in the shell prompt.

4- Once the server application launches I tried to Register the web apps service using a default account, but I get this service error:

error executing command as another user: no authentication agent found

Can you please help me? Thanks

Souvik Das

Try using ‘sudo’ while running the script
