Fix: DirectX function “GPU hang detected” failed

DirectX errors are really annoying. They usually indicate your GPU is unable to run the game you’re trying to launch. One of the most common DirectX errors that gamers encounter is this one: Directx function “GPU HANG DETECTED” Failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG (the GPU will not respond to more commands).

This error usually occurs when you load the game or wait in the start menu. It can also pop up when you go to settings to customize your character, weapons, and so on.

Let’s jump right in and explore how you can fix this annoying error that causes your games to crash unexpectedly.

How to fix GPU hang detected

Check your graphics driver

Make sure your graphics driver is not the culprit. There are three main things you can do to ensure your graphics driver is working properly: update it, roll back to a previous version or reinstall it.

Update your graphics driver

  1. Launch the Device Manager.
  2. Click on Display adapters and expand the list.
  3. Right-click on your graphics driver.
  4. Select Update driver.

Wait until your computer installs the latest GPU driver updates. Then, restart your machine, launch the problematic game again, and check if you’re still getting the same “GPU hang detected” error.

Uninstall and reinstall your graphics driver

If the issue persists, reinstall your graphics driver.

  1. Launch the Device Manager again.
  2. Expand the list of Display adapters.
  3. Right-click on your graphics driver.
  4. Select Uninstall device.

Wait until the computer uninstalls your driver, and then restart it. Your machine will automatically reinstall the latest graphics driver version upon restart.

Roll back to a previous graphics driver version

If updating and reinstalling your graphics driver didn’t solve the problem, try rolling back to a previous driver version.

  1. Launch the Device Manager.
  2. Click on Display adapters.
  3. Right-click on your graphics driver.
  4. Click on Properties.
  5. Select the Driver tab.
  6. Hit the Roll Back Driver button.
  7. Follow the on-screen steps to downgrade to an older driver version.

Disable DirectX 12

Try turning off DirectX 12 and check if this solution solves your problem.

  1. Navigate to Documents.
  2. Select your game.
  3. Open the main game folder.
  4. Locate and open the Settings folder.
  5. Open your user profile file with Notepad.
  6. Locate the Dx12 line.
  7. Edit the settings, and disable DirectX 12 either by changing the entry value to zero or replacing Direct X with Direct X 11.

The steps to follow are different depending on the game you’re playing. For example, Battlefield players need to open the PROFSAVE_profile file. Then, you need to change the GstRender.Dx12Enabled entry from 1 to zero to disable DirectX 12.

If you’re playing Borderlands, you need to go to %userprofile%DocumentsMy GamesBorderlands 3SavedConfigWindowsNoEditorGameUserSettings.ini. Then, change PreferredGraphicsAPI=DX12 to PreferredGraphicsAPI=DX11.

For specific step-by-step instructions, go to your game developer’s official support page.

Additional solutions

  • Disable XMP in BIOS. Maybe the game doesn’t like your RAM configuration.
  • Run the game with admin privileges.
  • Launch the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
  • Be sure to close all the other background programs before launching the game.
  • Lower GPU overclocking and voltage or disable overclocking software altogether.

Conclusion

To fix the “GPU hang detected” error, update your graphics driver to the latest version. If the issue persists, reinstall the GPU driver or roll back to a previous driver version. Additionally, edit your game settings and disable DirectX 12. Then, run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7 or 8.1, and force-stop all background programs, including overclocking software.

Error hung gpu detected

played game yesterday/day before yesterday and had 0 issues, no game update, no driver change, all of the sudden i get directX funtion «gpu hang detected» DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, once after a few seconds of running after a round start and then next game launch it happened when i got to the main menu

fixes that dont work: driver reinstall, driver rollback, default driver settings, changing dx version in settings, running game as admin, 1+year gpu undervolt/underclock, default gpu clocks

Are you overclocking your gpu? maybe its unstable and dx error pops up randomly from time to time? HAd somethign like that for me.

Open command prompt as admin
Type sfc /scannow
Restart pc if found any and fixed
May or may not help but easy and quick to do

for me it was the release version that worked without problems. then the first update came and since then the same dx errors. makes it unplayable for me

I also get crashes with that error message. It’s the only game i ever get crashes.

I played with standard clocks, Overclocked and Underclocked, nothing helps.

But somehow i only get the error while loading into a map, or back into the main menu, never while actually playing.

I won’t reinstall driver or try other things, because i know my rig is not the problem. I can play other games up to 14 hours straight without any errors, it doesn’t matter if DX11, DX12 or Vulkan.

Rig: Windows 11 Pro, R9 5950x (PBO), RTX 3080 (10 GB V-RAM), 32 GB 3800 MHZ RAM (Dual Channel), installed on a NVMe M2 drive. Detailed info about my rig can be found on my profile page.

Yes. I played a little bit yesterday and it did not happen. I left a a comment on the NVIDIA forums also. I think it is a glitchy NVIDIA driver so hopefully it will get sorted out with the next drivers. Thank you for the reply.

Hey, I’ve been having this issue with my RTX 4080 also. Dropping the settings down will give you a temporary fix, so I was running everything on HIGH not ULTRA. However in busy situations it would still crash. After experimenting a bit more I’ve found it to be voltage regulation on my 4080. I’ve used Afterburner to set my voltage max to 1.0 with a clock speed of 2800mhz (I have an Asus TUF 4080 that at stock will fluctuate around 1v to 1.05 and boost clocks up to 2850mhz.

So far this is stable for me — I’m not undervolting it really, just trying to stabalize voltage. I’m able to set everything to max settings in BF2042 and no crashes so far.

Hi @AjlaaSS and @Tom5051 . Thanks for your answers. I think the problem is due to the riser, but I’m not able to replace them soon, so I need to find a way to ignore the problematic GPU when the issue happens.

I’m not sure what role the watchdog plays here. Could you please elaborate a little bit? Thank you!

The watchdog makes the software shut down «if setup also restart as well» so a power PUMP pull of MAX voltage to ALL gpus does not happen, that is bad for expensive hardware and once a normal homes socket aka wall outlet has a calll higher than 999 watts that socket will be fried out «maybe» due to now the PSU WILL say no no no you will give me 220 volts «this is in the US btw idk about EU , Asia, and else where. Outlet fry is a good thing, fuse in PSU good thing, fire in PSU and wall outlet with that 1000 watt plus pull VERY VERY BADDDDD and it has a chance to do it at any second if anyone so reading this has a rig plugged into a normal house outlet , 25 years in tech and it happens to often but that chance is to great to risk even that low chance, you know, fire damaged GPU rig GONE, or worse your house becomes ashes while your at the gym…… do not turn off watch dog in short guys and gals
EDIT: First slot on riserless boards and corner slots on 4-6 card riser boards will pull more power and give less hash, adjust power and overclocks to meet that demand, volt meter to riser slot or volt meter to molex if your using SATA to power a riser, well WHATS WRONG WITH YOU? yeah just because that idiot seller on ebay or amazon sent it with it does not mean to use what will melt and catch on fire aka a sata to any power higher than 40 watts, try to run MAX power through SATA to power plug over that and you will have a bad bad day perhaps some investment loss on a few gpus the whole rig if your not home, TOSS those sata to power plugs out and stop playing teenage I hope no surge happens, 1 surge is a 90% chance of a shit storm none of us miners and our families ever want to see happen, I was not being a jerk, these things newbies do not know and do not check on, they just go, that is how mistakes and fires happen fellow miners we all know the newbies I speak of
