Error in the System is the first English album by German singer Peter Schilling, and is the English counterpart to the German album Fehler im System. The English and German version have been combined and sold as a single box set in several parts of the world.[2][3][4]
Singles[edit]
The English version contains the song «Major Tom (Coming Home)», which reached the top 15 in New Zealand[5] and the US,[6] and the top 50 in the UK.[7] The German version includes the songs «Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst)», which reached number one in Germany, Austria and Switzerland[8][9][10] and number two on the Dutch Top 40,[11][12] as well as «Die Wüste lebt».[13] Because «Major Tom (Coming Home)» was his one and only entry into the top 40 on the US charts, he is generally considered a one-hit wonder in that country.[14]

Peter Schilling — Error In The System (2016) Пе́тер Ши́ллинг (нем. Peter Schilling, настоящее имя — Пьер Михаэль Шиллинг) — немецкий музыкант, исполняющий композиции на научно-фантастические темы (космические пришельцы, астронавты, ядерный апокалипсис). Его альбом Error in the System (1983) содержит международный хит-сингл «Major Tom (Coming Home)», текст которого является вольным пересказом сюжета классической песни Дэвида Боуи «Space Oddity». Композиция первоначально была записана на немецком языке, однако хитом стала в английском варианте. В том же году адаптацию этой песни на французском языке выпустил бельгийский исполнитель Пластик Бертран. В 1984 и 1985 годах вышли альбомы 120 Grad и его англоязычная версия Things to Come. Итогом обучения Петера Шиллинга стала профессия турагента. С детства он увлекался футболом и в возрасте 15 лет получил приглашение в команду «Штутгарт» в форме предварительного договора, однако он выбрал карьеру музыканта, хотя и остаётся большим любителем футбола. The reason to get this is to get Major Tom. Side one is interesting. Reminded me of some techno songs I wrote ages ago — which is — NOT good. But Major Tom — GREAT song.

The album is a great piece of work. Pet Shop Boys meet David Bowie via Kraftwerk… If you like ‘Major Tom’ you’ll love this album, as in the English version you have two tracks proceeding it which are a build up to that track, with themes both set in space and perhaps giving a reason as to why Major Tom ends up ‘floating in a tin can’.
Later on, this release messes the order on the German version of the album, but does include two 12″ mixes of the albums two singles.
If you are going to muddle up an albums running order (only on the German album that is), then you might as well have put the English language 12″ of ‘Major Tom’ with the rest of the English language version of the album, and stuck ‘Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht’ at the end of the German album.
It’s a pity this isn’t a double CD, and both albums were left intact, with perhaps the doublers (Major Tom II (an instrumental) & Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht left off the English Version if need be).
Missing are the English & German ‘edited’ versions of ‘Major Tom’ at around 4.00 minutes each (with uniquely one German phrase ‘Vollig Losgelost’ in the English ‘edited’ version at the end of that particular mix), also as well as those the German B-Side to the original ‘Major Tom’ German 12″ & CD single ( ‘.. dann trügt der Schein’) would have been great additions to this release and the album version of ‘Die Wüste Lebt’ would have been best left in situ rather than being replaced with the 12″. The instrumental version of ‘Major Tom’ should have been a casuality if a one disc version is only possible replaced with any of the above.
Nice short booklet with some 7″ & 12″ artwork but unfortunately no lyrics. Still highly recommend this album as every song has musical merit, if you are a fan of ‘eighties’ music that is, (although ‘Silent Night’ seems strangely out of place).
