I’m having the following problem. Our backups are failing with the following error:

In the backup logs, I find:

In the event viewer, I find:

The backup operation that started at ‘?2010?-?05?-?24T21:51:56.331072200Z’ has failed with following error code ‘2155347997’ (The operation ended before completion.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

And on the command line, wbadmin returns:

This is very frustrating. The more I use Windows built-in backup the more fragile it seems to be. The D drive is a local drive and the path is valid. Running check disk finds no problems. The drive is mostly empty. I tried with and without the anti-virus software, same problem. There are no other server errors to indicate a problem with the drive or the path. I ran vssadmin list writers, and none of them returned any errors. Why would the backup return an invalid path error, for a path that is valid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,
James.

Apologies for the delay. Can you pl. collect the inbox backup traces under %windir%LogsWindowsServerBackup*.etl and send them across to:

(pl. remove -nospam phrase to get the mail ID).

Thanks for getting back to me!

I’ll try to mail them to you before the end of the week.

A quick question: if the backup failed to find and copy a single file or directory (for whatever reason), why does it abort the whole process? The file in question was not critical, so having it missing from the backup would only have been a minor inconvenience.

Obviously, you want to log such an event very clearly, but it does not make sense to me for it to kill the whole process. Will this be improved in future versions? I have to admit, I’ve not seen much backup software stop because of such a trivial error, except maybe «copy» from the command prompt.

I think the built-in Window Server 2008 R2 backup software is very promising, and overall, I like it better than the old NT Backup crud. However, f rom my limited use, it still seems rough around the edges; too many glitches and problems, something you don’t want to see from your backup software.

Addendum — git version 2.34.1.windows.1 & others(?)

Regrettably, git config core.protectNTFS false turned out not to be enough; the contents of the colon-carrying filenames are lost (filesize = 0).

Solution

TL;DR

git diff ec28c8ddd5f8c83d11604bcae69afb46d79b1029 > p.patch
patch -R -f -i p.patch
git add *
git commit

Elaboration

Turns out git config core.protectNTFS false does work, insofar as to not produce fatal errors on git checkout anymore.

However, git now will produce filenames clipped to the colon and with zero content.

E.g. Writing-Bops:-The-Bebop-Schema-Language.md (~9KB) —> Writing-Bops (0 KB)

To fix this, we need to get a copy of the original offending file(s)’ content another way, so we can restore it.

Conditions / Assumptions

  • This assumes you cannot or will not use a sparse clone for some reason.
  • Ditto on git apply-filter and other techniques to ‘permanently rewrite’ git history, f.e. when you are tracking a third-party git repo.
  • You’re running Windows, using NTFS storage, git-for-windows with bash as your shell and have a patch.exe available (patch --version should report something like «GNU patch 2.7.6»)

(In our case, we were messing about with a github wiki clone and ran into this issue of filenames containing colons. Of course, we wanted to fix this in place, without going the extra ‘sparse clone’ or WSL mile.)

Turns out we can get the missing content after we did

git config core.protectNTFS false
git checkout <hash>

by running patch. (BTW: TortoiseGit would hang forever if you tried to diff/compare these commits!)

Use this next command to get a patch file with all the missing changes. If you have multiple files with colons or other trouble, all the missing content will be listed in the patchfile: one patchfile to catch it all!

git diff ec28c8ddd5f8c83d11604bcae69afb46d79b1029 > p.patch
# ^^^^ reference the git hash with the offending original file(s)

Now that you have a patchfile, you can apply it to the current working directory: it must be applied in reverse (-R):

patch -R -f -i p.patch

If you forget -R, patch will ask (answer [y]es); if you do specify -R patch will yak even more, so -f (force) is in order to shut up patch and just do the job.

This should list one or more files being patched as a result, e.g.

$ patch -R -f -i p.patch
patching file Writing-Bops:-The-Bebop-Schema-Language.md

Note the colon in that filename: turns out GNU patch on windows (at least v2.7.6) uses a Unicode homoglyph to simulate a colon in a filename. See also further below.

You now have the original content of the colon-ed files in your working directory and you’re now ready to add these files to the git index and commit them as usual:

Warning: you’ll probably need to cleanup (delete) the empty clipped filenames produced by your earlier git checkout before proceeding!

Note: if you don’t like the homoglyphed filename patch -i assigned to the missing content, you can change it to anything you like before committing the result.

git add *
git commit

Verifying results

When you did everything right, that last commit should list the colon-ed file as renamed as you did not change the content and git commit should thus have detected the «file rename action» as-is.

Extra: replacing colon with a homoglyph

I found several Unicode homoglyphs that look more or less like a colon, but are considered legal in NTFS filenames.

After a bit of experimentation, I decided on using as I wanted to keep the github wiki page I was fiddling with intact as much as possible.

Generally, I would discard the colon entirely, or replace it with one or more hyphens, but in the case of wiki MarkDown pages, that decision can go the other way.

Are you currently seeing a “the system cannot find the path specified» error on your Windows computer? There are many other reasons you see this message, from simple mistakes such as typing a wrong path on your Command Prompt or a program installation failure.

However, it could also mean that there are registry problems in your system, such as invalid keys or, worse, a virus attack. That’s why if you see this error, don’t take it lightly. Here are eleven fixes you can do to solve this problem right away.

1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator

Windows utilities cannot access all files and folders available on your device. Administrative privileges are required to access specific system files. Thus, if you attempt to access a file or folder path that Command Prompt is not permitted to access, this error may occur. To rule out this possibility, you must grant Command Prompt exclusive access to restricted files.

To run Command Prompt as an administrator, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows Search, type «Command Prompt.»
  2. Right-click on the Command Prompt app and click Run as administrator.
Running Command Prompt as an Administrator on Windows

If the error persists after giving the administrator access to Command Prompt, apply the next fix.

2. Ensure the File Isn’t Password Protected

If the file you are trying to access through Command Prompt is password-protected, it may not be accessible. This may result in an error message saying, «the system cannot find the path specified.»

Therefore, you should check the file or folder to which the system cannot find the path. If the file is password-protected, remove the password, and the problem will be resolved. If you’re sure the file isn’t password-protected, skip this fix and go to the next.

3. Check Your System for Viruses

Virus attacks may not be the most common reason you see the «the system cannot find the path specified» error. But it’s best practice to check your system for viruses before you proceed with other fixes. This ensures that your computer is safe and free from threats before you begin tweaking system settings.

If you have a third-party antivirus program installed on your computer, you can run it to check for threats. However, if you don’t have one, you can use the built-in antivirus program on your program, called Windows Defender. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold Win + I keys to open Settings.
  2. Then, click Security & Update > Windows Security.
  3. Next, press Virus & threat protection.
    virus and threat protection
  4. Lastly, click Quick Scan.
    quick scan

The scan may take a while if you have a lot of files saved on your computer. Once it’s done and no threats are found, go to the following fixes. If it found some threats, quarantine the files and check if it fixed the problem.

4. Verify the File’s Path

If you’ve been getting this error message on the Command Prompt, check whether you’re typing the correct path or not. Most of the time, this is a human error where users are putting in the wrong path or name on the command line. So, go through your command again and ensure that the path is typed correctly.

If you’re getting this error when trying to download files to your system, check if your default download folder has been changed and ensure that the download location you have exists in your system.

5. Delete Special Characters From the Path

Special characters in a path may not be interpreted correctly by the Command Prompt; they may be interpreted as an operator or something else. Therefore, the interpreted path will differ from the one you originally wrote. Due to this, you may see an error stating that the path specified can’t be located since it’s been modified.

Check the path name you’ve specified in the Command Prompt. If the file’s name contains special characters, the best solution is to rename it and remove any special characters it currently contains. If the issue remains unsolved after applying this fix, continue with the next fix.

6. Make Sure the Code Is Correct

Although pretty obvious, running incorrect code can also result in the «the system cannot find the path specified» error. Once again, review the code you’re running and see if there are any errors in the paths you’ve added. If there is an error in the syntax or command lines, correct them, and you won’t see the error again.

7. Delete Any Invalid Paths in the Environment Variable

An environment variable contains data that can affect how running processes will behave in your system. So, if you run a program on your computer from the command line, the PATH environment variables play an integral role by saving the directory path that can be searched.

To understand how it works, imagine a computer with two different directories. If you are trying to run a program currently in a different directory, your system will search the directories recorded in the PATH variable. If the program is available in any directories, your system can run it without problems.

However, if you put in an invalid path variable, the process will be disrupted, causing the «the system cannot find the path specified» error. So, the best way to fix this problem is to delete the invalid paths from the Environment Variable.

Follow the instruction below to remove the paths:

  1. On your computer, open File Explorer.
  2. Then, look for This PC path on the left-side navigation, right-click on it and choose Properties.
    this PC properties
  3. In the new window, click the Advanced system settings link on the right-side section.
    advanced system settings
  4. From the Advanced tab on the System Properties window, click the Environment Variables button.
    environment variables
  5. Under the User variables section, check the Path variable by clicking on it and pressing the Edit button. This will display all the user variables.
    path user variables
  6. Next, check if the paths are correct and functioning. To do this, just copy the path and paste it on the address bar of the File Explorer. This will allow you to see if the File Explorer can find the path. If you can’t find it, the path is incorrect, and you have to Delete or Edit it. Do this on all the paths provided on the path variable. Once done, press OK.
    edit user path variables
  7. Then, under the System variables section, click the Path variable and press the Edit button.
    path system variables
  8. Repeat step six to check if all the paths are working.
    edit system path variables

You can all view all the path variables in the Command Prompt. Just type echo %PATH% and press Enter. However, it won’t tell you if the path is invalid or not.

8. Check for Incomplete Downloads

Ensure that the file or folder you are trying to access has been installed or downloaded correctly. Sometimes, the download process is interrupted while downloading a file or folder, resulting in an incomplete download. Thus, accessing such broken files using File Explorer or Windows Command Prompt can result in an error.

Therefore, go to the location of the file Command Prompt is unable to access and see if it was downloaded correctly. If a file was incorrectly installed or downloaded, reinstall or download it again. This will likely fix the problem. If that doesn’t work, try the next fix.

9. Check Your System’s Registry

If you have edited the AutoRun keys in the Registry Editor, it might be the reason why you’re getting a «the system cannot find the path specified» error. The AutoRun keys function by performing a command automatically when opened. If the information specified in the keys is wrong, errors may occur. Follow the instructions below to solve this issue.

  1. Press and hold Win + R keys to open Run. Then type Regedit and press Enter.
  2. On the Registry Editor, copy and paste the following path on the address bar:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftCommand Processor
    registry editor address bar
  3. Next, check if there is an AutoRun key. If there is, Delete or Modify the data.
    Autorun key
  4. Lastly, check if you’re still having the same issue.

10. Run an SFC Scan

If none of the methods above work, you can run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to look for corrupted files in your system and fix them automatically. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold Win + R keys to open Run. Then type cmd and press Enter.
    cmd
  2. On the Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    sfc scan now
  3. If SFC finds errors but can’t repair them, type this command after exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth and press Enter.
  4. Then, type exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and hit Enter.
  5. Restart your computer and see if it fixes the issue.

11. Update Your Operating System

The last thing you need to do to fix this error is to update your Windows system. While you shouldn’t run an outdated system, doing so can cause various issues to your system, including the «the system cannot find the path specified» error. Follow the steps below to upgrade your Windows:

  1. Open the Settings app on your system by pressing and holding Windows + I keys.
  2. From Settings, go to Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Then, click the Check for Updates button if there are any updates, download and install them.
    check for updates
  4. Restart your PC and check if you’re still experiencing the same error.

An Error-Free Windows Once More

Most of the time, the «the system cannot find the path specified» error is often caused by an invalid path or corrupted files in your system. After doing the fixes mentioned above, your system should run smoothly without errors. If you’re trying to run a program and getting this error, finding the correct install location of the software may help fix the problem.

Recently I was trying to run the Apache Tomcat server from the command prompt to test my Java web application on localhost, only to find the «The system cannot find the path specified» error in command prompt. I haven’t seen this error before so I was wondering whether tomcat is throwing or something is wrong with my system’s PATH environment variable.  In order to start the tomcat server, I was running the catalina.bat file as tomcat/bin/catalina.bat start and it wasn’t starting the Tomcat at all, instead, it was keep throwing «The system cannot find the path specified.» error as shown below:

C:apache-tomcat-7.0.73bin>catalina.bat start
The system cannot find the path specified.
The system cannot find the path specified.
The system cannot find the path specified.

This actually gives me hint that it’s not the Tomcat but something is really wrong with the PATH environment variable, but what could be wrong? What does this error mean? and most importantly how to solve this error?

Cause of «The system cannot find the path specified.» Error

It seems this error occurs when you have invalid paths in your PATH environment variable e.g. directories which don’t exist anymore. To find out if that’s the case just run following command in your DOS command prompt:

C:apache-tomcat-7.0.73bin>echo %PATH%
C:Windowssystem32;C:Windows;C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0;
The system cannot find the path specified.
The system cannot find the path specified.
The system cannot find the path specified.

You can see that after printing some paths, the command prompt is throwing «The system cannot find the path specified.» error again, which means it has nothing to do with Tomcat or Catalina but just with the PATH environment variable. There are some directories in the PATH which system is not able to resolve or find, hence it is throwing «The system cannot find the path specified.» error.

To be honest, the error message makes sense if you read it, but we are so used to panic when we see the error, we don’t try to understand the error message in first place. Now that, we have tried printing the value of PATH environment variable and seeing the message after few valid PATH, it suddenly starts making more sense.

This error is nothing to do with Tomcat, it can come while running any program/application from command prompt or even when a program trying to use the PATH environment variable.

The solution of «The system cannot find the path specified.» Error

Now that you know the cause of this error is invalid directories and path in the PATH environment variable, you can easily solve this problem by finding and removing those invalid path entries which system is not able to found.

Btw, finding invalid path can be a problem too if you have several directories listed in PATH environment variable. In order to check every path is correct, you need to split the whole PATH String by semicolon and check if they are correct by copying and opening a directory in command prompt. This could be troublesome but it is the sure short way to find all invalid path in your PATH environment variable.

Can we do better? is there a way to omit some of the valid paths? Well, if you have paid close attention to the output of echo %PATH% command, you see it printed a couple of directories before throwing the «The system cannot find the path specified.» error, which means they are valid, so we should start the search from the point point you see the error.

For example, in our case, the last valid path in the output above was «C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0;», so next path must be invalid. We can confirm that by copying that path and opening from the command prompt by just copy pasting it on run window and hitting enter.

If it opens a directory then it’s a valid path, otherwise, run window will tell it’s an invalid path. The next step is to correct or remove that path and run the echo %PATH% again. At this point, you will see the error when the system will hit the next invalid PATH, just repeat the process i.e. copy the invalid path by copying path after last valid path printed by echo %PATH% command and open that directory by using run command window or file explorer. If it’s valid then it will open a directory otherwise you see the error, something like path doesn’t exist.

Repeat the steps until the error completely goes aways, at this time, all the paths in your PATH environment variable is valid and you are ready to run your program from command prompt again e.g. Java, Tomcat, NetBeans or anything else.

Btw, if you are wondering how to see the value of PATH environment variable in Windows 8 or Windows 10, you can follow these steps to copy the PATH String and edit it to correct or remove invalid entries in PATH environment variables.

  1. From your desktop, rick-click «My Computer» and click «Properties»
  2. In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Advanced section, click the Environment Variables button.
  4. In the Environment Variables window, highlight the Path variable in the Systems Variable section and click the Edit button.

Here you can copy the value of PATH environment variable then you can search for last valid path e.g. «C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0;», then next path is your invalid PATH. Verify that by opening the directory using run command window or file explorer, if it’s valid either correct it or remove it and then save and open a new command prompt to try again by running echo %PATH%.

If it throws «The system cannot find the path specified.» error again means you have some more invalid paths in PATH environment variable. Just keep correcting or removing them until your PATH is printed completely by echo %PATH%. At this point, your PATH has only valid entries and you can tomcat or Java from the command line.

In my case, though the root cause was still invalid path in PATH environment variable, the reason of being invalid was quite interesting. My system PATH environment variable has sub-directories with an ampersand (&) character on it e.g. C:Program Files (x86)A & Bbin. When I copy pasted and open the directory from the file explorer or run window it was managed to open the directory but when I put the same path in PATH environment variable it was throwing the «The system cannot find the path specified.» error.

I tried to escape & with backslash it didn’t work then I tried to put single quote around A & B e.g. ‘A & B’, that didn’t work too, finally I removed the directory from PATH because it wasn’t really needed and boom the error «The system cannot find the path specified.» was gone. Now the full path is printed when I type the path or echo %PATH% in command prompt. So, that resolved my problem.

Just remember that every time you make a change on PATH or Path environment variable under System Properties section, you must open a new command prompt window, don’t run the PATH or echo %PATH% on old command prompt window because it will have old value of system properties. The new, updated value of PATH will only be available on new command prompt window.

Solution of "The system cannot find the path specified." Error in Command Prompt

Important points

1. The root cause of «The system cannot find the path specified.» is an invalid path in PATH environment variable.

2. The name of the PATH environment variable can be Path or path as well.

3. You should use the value of the PATH environment variable from System Properties Window in Advanced Settings, Environment Variables.

4. Watch out for & character in PATH, it’s invalid and cause «The system cannot find the path specified.», remove them from PATH.

5. To find the invalid path, just type the path or echo %PATH% in the command prompt and see where it is failing to display the directory path. That’s your invalid entry. Find out what is wrong and then correct it or remove it from PATH.

That’s all about how to solve «The system cannot find the path specified.» error while running the program from the command prompt. The root cause of this error is invalid directories, sub-directories in the PATH environment variable, just remove them and the error will be solved. When searching for invalid directories, look where the path is failing to display directory name, when you type the path or echo %PATH% in command prompt. Watch out for special characters like & in PATH, even though run window can open such path, it seems they are not valid for the PATH environment variable.

This article features error number Code 2630, commonly known as The specified path is invalid described as The specified path is [email protected]@@[email protected]@@1.

About Runtime Code 2630

Runtime Code 2630 happens when Microsoft Access fails or crashes whilst it’s running, hence its name. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the code was corrupt in some way, but just that it did not work during its run-time. This kind of error will appear as an annoying notification on your screen unless handled and corrected. Here are symptoms, causes and ways to troubleshoot the problem.

Definitions (Beta)

Here we list some definitions for the words contained in your error, in an attempt to help you understand your problem. This is a work in progress, so sometimes we might define the word incorrectly, so feel free to skip this section!

  • Path — A path, the general form of a file name or of a directory name, specifies a unique location in a file system

Symptoms of Code 2630 — The specified path is invalid

Runtime errors happen without warning. The error message can come up the screen anytime Microsoft Access is run. In fact, the error message or some other dialogue box can come up again and again if not addressed early on.

There may be instances of files deletion or new files appearing. Though this symptom is largely due to virus infection, it can be attributed as a symptom for runtime error, as virus infection is one of the causes for runtime error. User may also experience a sudden drop in internet connection speed, yet again, this is not always the case.

  • Question

  • Hi,

I’m trying to install a driver with INF file that has the following section:

    [SourceDisksFiles]

    myDriver.sys = 1,..s64

and I get an error says: «The specified path is invalid»

I looked at the INF log (setupapi.dev.log) and it seems that Windows installer does not like non-subdirectory the the relative path; means: when I remove the «..s64» installation goes fine if the files to copy resides in the root directory.

My question: is there any option to config the INF to copy files that are not subdirectory of the root folder?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hani;

Answers

  • Acutally, I would say that it means that s64 is somewhere in Never Never Land, since the first «» would tell me to start at the root of the working drive, then the .. would tell me  to go up one directory and look for s64 there. The problem
is that «» IS the TOP most and the «..64» might just as well say «Second star to the right and striaght on till morning.» Works great if you believe in fairies.

Are you sure you didn’t mean «\??\C:S64»? The «», might need to be escaped, though that shouldn’t be the case in an INF file.
