I have been using a noscript tag to show a warning when users have JavaScript disabled or are using script blocking plugins like Noscript. The website will not function properly if JavaScript is disabled and users may not figure out why it is not working without the warning.

After the latest Google algorithm shuffle, I have seen the daily traffic drop to about 1/3 of what it was in the previous months. I have also seen pages that were ranking #1 or #2 in the SERPS drop out of the results. After doing some investigating in webmaster tools, I noticed that «JavaScript» is listed as #16 in the keywords section. This makes no sense because the site has nothing to do with JavaScript and the only place that word appears is in the text between the noscript tags.

It seems that Google is now including and indexing the content between the noscript tags. I don’t believe that this was happening before. The warning is three sentences. I’d imagine that having the same three sentences appearing at the top of every single page on the site could have a damaging effect on the SEO.

Do you think this could be causing a problem with SEO? And, is there any other method to provide a warning to users who have JavaScript disabled in a way that won’t be indexed or read by search engines?

Put the <noscript> content at the end of your HTML, and then use CSS to position it at the top of the browser window. Google will no longer consider it important.

Stack Overflow itself uses this technique — do a View Source on this page and you’ll see a «works best with JavaScript» warning near the end of the HTML, which appears at the top of the page when you switch off JavaScript.

<noscript> is not meant for meaningless warnings like:

<noscript>
Oh, no! You don’t have JavaScript enabled! If you don’t enable JS, you’re doomed. [Long explanation about how to enable JS in every browser ever made]
</noscript>

It’s meant for you to provide as much content as you can, along with a polite mention that enabling JS will provide access to certain extra features. You’ll find that basically every popular site follows this guideline.

I don’t think using <noscript> is a good idea. I’ve heard that it is ineffective when the client is behind a JavaScript-blocking firewall — if the client’s browser has JavaScript enabled the <noscript> tag won’t activate, because, as far as the browser’s concerned, JavaScript is fully operable within the document…

A better method IMO, is to have all would-be ‘noscript’ content hidden by JavaScript.

Here’s a very basic example:

Somebody on another forum mentioned using an image for the warning. The way I see it, this would have three benefits:

There wouldn’t be any irrelevant text for search engines to index.
The code to display a single image is less bulky than a text warning (which gets loaded on every page).
Tracking could be implemented to determine how many times the image is called, to give an idea of how many visitors have JavaScript disabled or blocked.

If you combine this with something like the non-noscript technique mentioned by J-P, it seems to be the best possible solution.

Just wanted to post an interesting tidbit related to this. For a site of mine I have ended up doing something similar to what stack overflow uses, but with the addition of a «find out more» link as my users are not as technical as this site.

The interesting part is that following advice of people aboce, my solution ditched the noscript tag, instead opting to hide the message divs with javascript. But I found that if firefox is waiting for its master password, this hiding of the message is interupted, so I think I will go back to noscript.

Hi JohnDohe, a lot of time, when a function doesn’t work, the site assumes it is a problem with JavaScript being disabled. If JavaScript is disabled, half of the web will tell you right away, so that’s usually not the issue. Instead, it’s usually something more selective, like Firefox’s Content Blocking feature, or an add-on, which knocks out a script or two.

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are standard suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox’s Content Blocking feature and extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

(A) Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the address bar, near the lock icon? More info on managing the Tracking Protection feature in this article: Content blocking.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what’s going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: You’ve covered this one, you can skip to the next section. When you have a problem with one particular site, a good «first thing to try» is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox’s Cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site’s cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > «Clear Cookies and Site Data»
(menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > «Clear Cookies and Site Data»
click the padlock or «i» icon in the address bar, then the «>» button, then More Information, and finally the «Clear Cookies and Site Data» button

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site’s cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox’s Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

«3-bar» menu button > «?» Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
(menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click «Start in Safe Mode» (not Refresh).

Поэтому чтобы интернет-страницы работали нормально, необходимо активировать JavaScript. Мы расскажем, как это сделать.

Если у вас отключён JS, содержание или функциональность веб-страницы будет страдать. Используя настройки своего браузера, вы можете активировать этот язык программирования. Давайте посмотрим, как это сделать на примере наиболее популярных веб-обозревателей.

Mozilla Firefox

В адресную строку веб-обозревателя введите указанный ниже запрос и нажмите «Enter» для перехода к соответствующему разделу.

Для того чтобы активировать JavaScript для произвольного веб-сайта, выполните следующее:

Нажмите по значку с изображением замка, расположенному справа от адресной строки.

В появившемся меню выберите пункт «Настройки сайтов».

Пролистайте открывшуюся страницу немного вниз, найдите на ней пункт JavaScript и выберите в выпадающем списке один из двух подходящих вариантов – «Разрешать (по умолчанию)» или «Разрешить».

На этом задача считается решенной, вкладку «Настройки» можно закрыть.

Вариант 2: Все сайты
Включить JavaScript для всех сайтов, посещаемых через Google Chrome, можно в его параметрах.

Вызовите меню браузера и откройте «Настройки».

Пролистайте страницу вниз, вплоть до блока «Конфиденциальность и безопасность»

и перейдите в «Настройки сайта».

Прокрутите следующую страницу до раздела «Контент» и нажмите в нем на «JavaScript».

Переведите в активное положение переключатель, расположенный напротив пункта «Разрешено (рекомендуется)».

Дополнительно имеется возможность «Добавить» исключения – сайты, работа JavaScript для которых будет запрещена (вариант «Блокировать») или разрешена («Разрешить»).

Для этого нажмите кнопку «Добавить» напротив соответствующего пункта, введите в появившемся окошке URL-адрес нужного веб-ресурса, после чего снова нажмите «Добавить».

It’s expected. The Preview panel will try to render HTML but it does not run JavaScript so it only shows the content of the <noscript> tag.

I had mine resolved. It was due to a CORS policy setting. You may want to check your server’s CORS policy setting. For Django, it needs following to be set in the settings.py if CORs module is installed.
CORS_ALLOW_ALL_ORIGINS = True

For Apache httpd, it maybe setup in the .htaccess like such:
Header always set Access-Control-Allow-Origin *

Other servers may have different syntax or configurations.

Thank you for your solution to this problem. Your method worked in my case which was using Django as backend and Vue.js as frontend.
