  • I’m getting this error from within VS whenever I add any command to the post-build event.

This started after my PC crashed when I was building the project.  I’m assuming there is some state or file left somewhere that is causing MSBuild to fail.

Here is ths complete error message.

C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Microsoft.Common.targets(3090,13): error MSB6003: The specified task executable could not be run. MSB5003: Failed to create a temporary file. Temporary files folder is full or its path is incorrect. The file exists.
    C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Microsoft.Common.targets(3090,13): error MSB6003:

  • This means Path.GetTempFileName() threw an IOException «The file exists.». Can you try deleting everything in your %temp% and %tmp% folders?

You need to define a User Macro in a property sheet for MKLProductDir, or create an environment variable MKLProductDir.

Let’s say this is the pathname to your installation of the Intel MKL:

C:Program Files (x86)IntelSWToolscompilers_and_librarieswindowsmkl

You need to either:

1. Create a new environment variable

right click start -> System -> Advanced System Settings
Environment variables

add a new environment variable:

MKLProductDir C:Program Files (x86)IntelSWToolscompilers_and_librarieswindows

2. Add a User Macro to a property sheet in Visual Studio (here, Visual Studio 2015)

Open your solution
In the Solution Explorer (right window), look at the bottom tabs - click on Property Manager

You should see properties for Debug | Win32 , Debug | x64 , Release | Win32 , Release x64. You could edit any of the property sheets in the items listed under each section. Consider creating a custom property sheet.

Open up a property sheet (right-click, Properties).
Left side - under Common Properties - you will see User Macros
Click on User Macros
Add Macro
MKLProductDir C:Program Files (x86)IntelSWToolscompilers_and_librarieswindows

Save your solution.

See this Intel Forum post, Intel Composer 2016 Update 3 + VS2015 for a little bit more information on the issue.

This works very fine now @sebastue here is an example of the project loaded, I only had to install two libraries with apt-get. We have made very significant changes and improvements since, please give our experience a try.

image

The demo described by @Necktwi also works fine with no issues, I assume you have targeted Windows? I expect this should work for Linux as well, just need to copy Demo1, or open workspace instead of CMakePsuedoSubDirDemo.

Here is the example of that:

MSB6003: The specified task executable «executable» could not be run

This error indicates that an executable that was part of the build process could not be executed. There is usually an additional error text that might give more information on the cause of the problem.

If you need more information to diagnose the error, first enable a diagnostic log (use the -verbosity:diag command-line switch), and check the MSBuild log file with the full diagnostics output. For bigger output logs on large projects, consider using the binary log ( -bl command-line switch) and the MSBuild Structured Log Viewer to view the output more easily.

You can also set the MSBuildDebugEngine environment variable to 1 to get all possible logs. See Building MSBuild for the .NET Framework — Logs.

If the task ran an executable, try running the executable separately with the same inputs and command line.

Examples of situations that cause this error:

File or folder not found

If the executable could not be found, or the path was incorrect, verify the spelling and check the installation location of the executable to verify it is correctly installed.

File is in use

If another program is running on the same machine that has a lock on a file that is needed for a build, it could cause this error. Shut down any other processes that might be using the same files.

Too many temporary files

If you’re running MSBuild on a build server and temporary files are never removed, you might eventually reach the maximum number of files allowed in a folder. The limit is specific to the filesystem. For FAT32 filesystem, it’s 65534. For NTFS, it’s 4,294,967,295. Upgrading from FAT32 to NTFS might help prevent this issue. On a Windows system, the temporary files folder is stored in the TMP or TEMP environment variable. On a Mac or Linux system, the environment variable TMPDIR tells where temporary files are stored. Check the temp folder and empty it, as needed. Also, consider adding a scheduled job to clean the temp folder, or steps to your build process to remove temp files that were created during a build.

The maximum number of files can also be exceeded on another folder. Also, check for any tools in your build system that could be generating extremely large numbers of files.

Path too long

If the issue is too long a path on Windows, rather than working around to create shorter paths, first consider updating a registry setting to enable long paths; see Maximum Path Length Limitation.

Question

When I try to compile a wpf user control library project then I get following error. This started happening suddenly.

C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319Microsoft.CSharp.targets(160,9): error MSB6003: The specified task executable «Csc.exe» could not be run. Access is denied

I am using Vs 2010 ultimate edition with SP1.

target .net framework : 3.5

I try to use msbuild command to compile then also i got same error. I re-installed vs2010 SP1 to repair but it did not help.

I have checked the access right. I have admin access rights on my machine.

Thanks Yi Feng Li,

I tried all the suggestions you have made but nothing worked.

I figured out that problem was coming only when I was login into my company domain, but not on local computer account.

So then I connected my machine to office network and after that everything started working, even when i disconnected my machine from the company network.

Thanks and Regards,

All replies

Please consider following suggestion:

1. Where is your project located? If we move the project to another working folder as D:, does it work?

2. If we create a new wpf project, does it work?

3. If we run the VS as Administrator or open the Command Line Prompt using Run As Adminstrator to build the application, does it work?

4. If we create a new Admin user account, does the project build ok?

5. It could also be a Visual Stduio issue, I suggest you remove all Visual Studio component and reinstall it may helps. Please use Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Uninstall Utility to remove the following products of Visual Studio 2010 release from your computer. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2010uninstall. You can use «Complete» option.

Error msb6003 the specified task executable

Question

My build fails with the follwing error message:

ProjectBuildMyName.Cpp.Cl.targets(155, 5) error MSB6003: The specified task executable «cl.exe» could not be run. The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.

I thought it’s probably an lock or a handle on a file. However, I experience the same issue even after a restart of the entire build-server.

Thanks for your post.

As you mentioned, it seems the compiled file is being used, but it can be other issues.

Could you please provide more information like a diagnostic build log,

or share the custom MyName.Cpp.Cl.targets file.

Looking forward to your reply.

Thank you for helping me. Where shall I send/upload my files?

I just tried to build again by using the diag-switch. This time I’ve got the error: error MSB6006: «mt.exe» exited with code 31.

Thanks for your post.

I think it is a known issue and I find a connect page:

Here are several additional workarounds you can try:

1. Change «Regional and Language Options» in control panel (Advance tab -> Language for non-Unicode programs) to English(US)

2. Under properties >> C/C++ >>Code Generation >> RunTime Library

Change Multi-threaded (/MT) (Release Build) and Multi-threaded Debug (/MTd) (Debug Build)

to Multi-threaded DLL (/MD) (Release build) and Multi-threaded Debug DLL (/MDd) (Debug build)

Hope my reply helps.

Thank you for your workarounds. However, I still get the errors. This time I’ve got the cl.exe and mt.exe error messages.

Could I use any other tools to log the process?

Thanks for your post.

As far as I know, the Mt.exe file is a tool that generates signed files and catalogs,

which tool do you use to log the process now?

what do you mean «log process» here?

Also you can send me your project file via tlef22 AT yahoo.com.cn

Looking forward to your reply.

we just made some progress! After disabling the virus scanner entirely we got our build running. I’ll monitor our builds the next few days. I’ll keep you updated about the case!

PS: By «log process» I meant monitoring the build process. I thought about using a tool like procmon.exe.

I had this error too and it was literally the file path that was too long. I post here for the case people encounter the same:

I had my project at:

C:UsersstevenvDocumentsVisual Studio 2015ProjectsUnity — Technologies — graphicsdemos — 43011994ae74Unity — Technologies — graphicsdemos — 43011994ae74NativeRenderingPluginPluginSourceprojectsVisualStudio2015

Moving it too a location with a shorter path solved it.

So in 2017 we still have to deal with these problems?

У меня есть небольшой проект C ++ в Visual Studio на основе кроссплатформенного шаблона OpenGLES2. У меня не было никаких проблем, пока я вдруг не начал получать эту ошибку компиляции:

MSB6003 The specified task executable "clang.exe" could not be run. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

It turned out to be Comodo Firewall that was silently blocking Visual Studio.

Hi,

I see some occasional deadlocks when starting multiple cmake processes for checking symbols simultaneously.

I have a lot of stuff to check (include files, functions, symbols etc.).
I’ve written a dispatcher which generates CMakeLists.txt files and starts cmake N processses. N — number of cores.

And 1-2 cmake processes (out of my 8 logical cores and therefore cmake processes) hangs.
Sometimes they work fine, sometimes not. One user reported that he has 100% repeatable deadlocks on his system.
On my system these deadlocks could unlock in 5-10 minutes while on the other systems could not.

I decided to catch the issue on my system. I’ve built cmake-3.7.0 rel with deb info build.
Once I was hit by deadlock I’ve attached to cmake process.

So, cmake is waiting for msbuild.exe to finish. I see main+4 threads. Background threads are hunting for stdout data and spinning somewhere in SourcekwsysProcessWin32.c - kwsysProcessPipeThreadReadPipe(). Main thread is waiting in G:devCMakeSourcecmSystemTools.cxx:614 - RunSingleCommand() and line 614while ((pipe = cmsysProcess_WaitForData(cp, &data, &length, CM_NULLPTR)) >.

I’ve gathered msbuild.exe output vars.

So, what does it mean? Who is responsible for deadlocks? msbuild? cmake? (maybe issues in reading from pipes)
Maybe you know what this error means. I googled it but nothing concrete.

Access is denied probably meansERROR_ACCESS_DENIED returned from GetLastError() but I wonder what causes this error.
