SCCM,enable TPM w/HP Bios Configurator:Password is set,no password file provided

Original Bios v1.05
Upgrade Bios v1.08
Bios Configurator v.4.0.15.1
Windows 10 v1607
Laptop: EliteBook 1040 G3

I’m trying to setup SCCM to automate configuring a BIOS password, enabling the TPM and storing the details in AD. I’m worndering if anyone has this setup as I’m running in some issues.

Setup.
1. Created a BiosPassword.bin file from the password configurator — works
2. Created a package in SCCM with the required files
3. Created TS step to set password — BIOSConfigUtility64.exe /npwdfile:BiosPassword.bin — works
4. Created step to Enable TPM — BiosConfigUtility64.exe /SetConfig:EnTPM1040G3.REPSET /cpwdfile:BiosPassword.bin — fails

Failure message:

Failed to run the action: Enable TPM for HP EliteBook 1040 G3. The environment is incorrect. (Error: 0000000A; Source: Windows)

Testing: The TS complains about the password file yet it’s the same bin file used to set the password.
1. Created a joint step to set password and enable TPM but fails with the same error
— BiosConfigUtility64.exe /SetConfig:EnableTPM1040G3.REPSET /nspwdfile:BiosPassword.bin

2. Ran the file directly from a PC — file runs and the password is accepted but cannot change TPM activation policy so prompted for F1 on a manual reboot
TPM Activation Policy,
F1 to Boot
Allow user to reject
*No prompts

3. Upgraded the Bios but I get the same two failures.

4. Placed a restart computer step into the TS after the Enable of TPM but makes no difference as initial file fails to run.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Don’t know why I getting failed password response since the same bin file is being used. Also don’t want users to be prompted to enable TPM as this removes the zero touch deployment.

I’m using the HP BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU v. 4.0.13.1) to change BIOS configuration.

So I set up a new BIOS password with the HPQPswd tool.

Everything worked fine. Password is activated.

After that I tried to do some changes relating to the boot order.

But everytime, wether with a config file nor with the command «/setvalue:»», the following error message appears:

So I have to provide the password file, but how? Or is there any other mistake?

Thanks for your response!

Well, I think I found the problem:

BiosConfigUtility64.exe /set:»Filename.txt» /cspwdfile:»Filename.bin»

But now i receive a new error message:

So I hope somebody can explain me this message or help me with that.

BCU version is v. 4.0.13.1

Thanks for your response!

Error Code 10:
Valid password not provided. BCU was unable to find a valid password on the command line in the following cases:

  • When attempting to change the password, the correct password was not provided.
  • When attempting to change the password, the new password did not satisfy password requirements for the platform.
  • When attempting to change setting values, the correct password was not provided.

You are probably using the wrong password-file. Its probably not the file originally created to set the password.

Find the original file or log into the bios and set the password to blank.

Then use the new password file to set the password. (And dont lose it this time and make sure its backed up)

Now run the command again. At least you can verify you are using the wrong file this way. And if you are, i hope you dont have thousands of computers you need to do this on.

Also if the passwords were originally set with the old tools that used clear text passwords, you might be able to use the old versions of BCU to unlock the BIOS.

trying to change BIOS language using HP Bios Configuration Utility but get Error code 6 — Access Denied (failed due to BIOS permissions).

BIOS version is THI vA0.08.

I can read (get) successfully but cannot change any setting. tried to change other settings unsuccessfully.

What am I missing? Do I need to set a password first?

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you wish to change the BIOS language on your system to English from the current Dutch. I am happy to assist you with this.

Was Dutch the language that the BIOS was set to out of the box or was it later changed to Dutch?

If the systems’ original default was English, you could try looking at the motherboard guide for your system. HP and Compaq Desktop PCs — motherboard specifications, Thimphu. At the bottom of the page is an indicator for the Jumpers for the CMOS and BIOS password. If your default language was English you could use the jumper to clear the current CMOS settings, including the language.

Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

I should have mentioned.

language is currently Dutch and I would like to set it to English. I removed the * and placed in front of English. essentially following instructions in the manual so that is not the issue.

thanks in advance for your help

Firstly, thank you very much for your support.

The language was Dutch out of the box. I think the problem is that I can’t set the password.

I’ve tried the following:

I set the password in the BIOS to «dd».

HPQPswd64.exe /s /p»dd» /f»dd.bin»

. but that didn’t work.

Sorry . I should provided the error I get .

I’ve tried an easy password like «dd». I’ve also tried «abcd1234» as password but with same results.

I also cleared CMOS and password using jumpers on motherboard and tried all the above again.

I can access the BIOS at bootup with ESC without using a password.

Thank you for response.

I already did that but the language remained Dutch. BIOS version is latest A0.14 Rev.A.

I think the problem is that I can’t set the password. I am hoping that once I can set the password using BCU I will be able to use BCU to change the language.

I’ve tried the following:

I set the password in the BIOS to «dd».

HPQPswd64.exe /s /p»dd» /f»pwd.bin»

I got the following error:

Besides the easy password «dd» I also tried «abcd1234» as password but with same results.

I also cleared CMOS and password using jumpers on motherboard and tried all the above again.

I can access the BIOS at bootup — it currrently doesn’t have a password.

Is it possible that I am not using a valid passowrd format i.e. must have uppercase and lower case characters as well as numbers etc?

Could it be TPM 2.0 . not sure what this security device is but could that be blocking me from setting a password?

Found another way to change the BIOS language. Let’s try that.

  1. Open the installation directory of “BIOS configuration utility”. Path: C:Program Files (x86)Hewlett-PackardSSM
  2. Press Shift key+right mouse button and select “Open command window here”
  3. Type “BIOSConfigutility.exe/getconfig:config.txt” and hit “Enter”, this will create a dump file in the same directory.
  4. Open “config.txt”, scroll down till you find the Language option.
  5. The language with the “*” in front of it is the one that is enabled. In your case, remove the * from before Deutsch and add the * before English and save the file.
  6. Again Press Shift key+right mouse button and select “Open command window here”
  7. Type “BIOSConfigutility.exe/setconfig:config.txt” and hit “Enter”.

Restart the computer, access BIOS and see if the language has been changed.

Let me know how it goes

MDT Bios update with password

I’m trying to make a sequence to update the bios for our HP laptops. I have the needed bios update files etc, but the bios is protected with a password.
Is there a way to use the password in de sequence? Can I add it in a command line or script?
In this topic the anwser is to use command line and HP procedures, but I can’t find those.

Anyone who has experience with this?

In your sequence, can you run the hp software that update with a command line ? It would be the way to do it.

See there for a command line; HP BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU); https://ftp.ext.hp.com/pub/caps-softpaq/cmit/HP_BCU.html

HPBiosUpdRec [-s] [-pPasswordFile] [-fROMBINFile] [-a] [-h] [-?]

-s: Silent mode.
-p: Specify encrypted password file created with the HpqPswd utility.
-f: Specify ROM BIN file. Default is BIN file in same folder as exe.
-a: (Silent mode only) Always flash, ignore version comparison.
-h: Create HP_TOOLS partition if not present.
-?: Display usage.
-b: Suspend BitLocker if needed.
-r: Prevent autoreboot after the BIOS update.

And you need to run HPQPswd.exe to create the password file.

HpqPswd.exe /s /p»password123″ /f»password.bin»

I used the software to create a password file but the .bin file is not being used. Can I provide a log file for you?

I bought a used Probook 650G1. When I tried to reinstall Windows, it can not boot from USB. I think it was disabled, but I can not check, because BIOS request PW to enter but I can’t get it from the seller. What I tried before:

1) Disconnect BIOS battery (mian battery and power cord also disconnected)

2) Running HP BCU biosconfigutility.exe /newsetuppassword:»12345″

I got error message:

3)Use HP Bios Reset Utlty. USB drive created, but still not boot from it.

T hanks for your help.

BiosConfigUtility64.exe /SetConfig:lockmpm.txt

<ERROR msg="Could not change settings. Password is set, but no valid current admin password provded." />
<Warning msg="BCU return value" real="10" translated="10" />

lockmpm.txt:

Manufacture Mode <

Bios.
