NVIDIA Proprietary Driver: Troubleshooting
This page describes issues and workarounds relating to the NVIDIA proprietary display driver.
Secure Boot
Although Secure Boot is now supported by Debian, the NVIDIA driver requires DKMS, which requires additional setup to be used with Secure Boot.
If you don’t sign the generated modules, you will see the following in boot logs:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules See 'systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service' for details
systemd-modules-load logs will clearly show errors related to the nvidia module.
Another symptom of Nvidia module not loaded is nvidia-settings not starting:
$ nvidia-settings ERROR: NVIDIA driver is not loaded ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system
To sign Nvidia modules and make them work with Secure Boot, follow those instructions.
An easier alternative is to disable Secure Boot in your system’s BIOS.
Black screen after resume from suspend
I assume you have already a file named like 80-nvidia.conf placed in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ to edit and the package nvidia-settings installed. First you can check that correct monitor frequencies are detected: run nvidia-settings program choose the «X Server Display Configuration» tab then click the «Save To X Configuration File» button then click «Show previw…» in the view showed look for these two lines:

HorizSync 30.0 - 70.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 120.0
placed in the section «Monitor» DON’T USE THESE VALUES you must edit and set the horizontal and vertical frequencies reading/googling your monitor name and model specification datasheet! If the values are wrong set the right value in 80-nvidia.conf then you must also add this line:

Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
in the section «Device» then reboot in order the changes take effect. If these changes still don’t work try enforce monitor detection adding these lines to the «Device» section:

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" Screen 0
the accepted value for ConnectedMonitor are CRT, DFP and TV anything attached to a 15 pin VGA connector is regarded by the driver as a CRT. «DFP» should only be used to refer to digital flat panels connected via a DVI port, TV stands for television. Don’t forget to reboot in order the changes takes effect. For further information you can refer to this link. An exemple 80-nvidia.conf could be:

Screen tearing with KDE desktop
To avoid screen tearing when using the KDE desktop you need to enable triple buffering. You need to add this line:

Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
to the section «Device» of your NVIDIA configuration file placed into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory in order to enable triple buffering for the driver then run this command: sudo nano /etc/profile.d/local.sh then copy/paste the following text:

if [ $USER != root ] then export KWIN_TRIPLE_BUFFER=1 fi
save and exit the editor and reboot the system to the changes take effect, doing so you’ll enable triple buffering for all KDE users of your system. You can play this video to check if the problem has gone.
General
On some older machines, to compensate for a broken BIOS and/or older graphics cards, the following can improve use of an NVidia card significantly:

When encountering performance and stability issues, try adding one or more of the following boot parameters:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=4"

Adding enable_mtrr_cleanup as a boot parameter (e.g. GRUB, LILO) is critical on some systems.

In addition, adding mtrr_spare_reg_nr=4 (or a suitable number for your set-up) will show improvements, but be aware that this is hardware dependent value.

An important change could be setting the NVreg_EnableMSI=0 and/or NVreg_Mobile (mobile graphics cards only) options for the nvidia module. For example:
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-common-kernel.conf

NVreg_Mobile has options for various brands:
- 1 = Dell laptops
- 2 = Non-Compal Toshiba laptops
- 3 = All other laptops
- 4 = Compal Toshiba laptops
- 5 = Gateway laptop

Hi guys!
I did follow the wiki guide to the letter but as you can see the driver that installs is the wrong one…
I installed debian 11 uefi and used the non-free installation so I didn’t need to change anything in /etc/apt/sources.list
Now I am going to show the full installation plus the questions…

It is exactly for this kind of case that you should not install the Nvidia proprietary driver from the script provided on their website. You have created a FrankenDebian and you broke it.
The easiest and safest way to install the necessary packages and make use of CUDA capabilities of your GPU on Debian is to use the proprietary driver and the Nvidia toolkit that are in the official contrib
and non-free
repositories.
This seems a big drawback because you do not get the latest and up-to-date version (but you can mitigate that by using the backports
repository), but it does really makes sense when it comes to CUDA, especially on a headless server.
Therefore, in order to bring back your server up and running (not to mention more reliable), I would strongly suggest to uninstall the previous driver installed from Nvidia website and install the Nvidia driver and CUDA toolkit packaged by the Debian community.
1) Uninstall previous driver, CUDA and others linked Nvidia packages:
# apt purge nvidia-*
2) Add contrib
and non-free
Debian repository in your /etc/apt/sources.list
(if it is not already done), which should look like this:
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free deb-src
http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free

If you want to have a more up-to-date version and use the one in the backports
repository (currently, 375.66 and 390.48 versions respectively), use this command instead of the previous one:
# apt-get install -t stretch-backports nvidia-driver
5) Install the CUDA toolkit:
# apt-get install nvidia-cuda-dev nvidia-cuda-toolkit
Please, note that CUDA 8 only supports gcc 5.3.1
, which is not available for stretch
. To compile you need to add -ccbin clang-3.8
to the nvcc
command line.
If you want to use CUDA 9, you can use the version in the backports
repository, the same way I did before for installing the nvidia-driver
from it:
# apt-get install -t stretch-backports nvidia-cuda-dev nvidia-cuda-toolkit
You might want to take a look a the changelogs to see what improvements you could have when using the packages (either for the driver or the CUDA toolkit) from backports
.
6) Reboot your machine
At this point, everything should be working well, like before without any noticeable performance hit.

The problem I have (after installing Mint 19 and nvidia driver from the Driver Manager) is having no options in nvidia-settings, making me unable to modify anything. I’ve looked everywhere for the error string from the title, and the thread I linked was the closest thing I could find.
After doing the thread’s stuff, I am booting into a 640×480 screen resolution with no cinnamon crash reports, but In Driver Manager I have a new option I had never seen before that is selected: Continue using a manually installed driver

The options to select xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and nvidia-driver-390 are both grayed out, meaning I can’t edit them.
Any help would be appreciated. I had had the same problem with Mint 18. Its strange because a month or two ago I even downloaded CSGO and played on 144hz (a setting I could change when I had nvidia-settings ) for a while until I had to reinstall Mint (18 at the time, now on 19) to a different hard disk where I cant get nvidia to cooperate.

I have added the solution here so other users don’t have to read through all the posts. The solution was to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS.
However, I have recently (September, 2018) finished a guide for installing the Nvdiia driver with Secure Boot enabled. Go down to my second post on page 2 in this topic, under the section How to install the Nvidia driver with Secure Boot enabled; for drivers installed using Driver Manager, apt or Synaptic:

3. Since 2 didnt work, I ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-driver-390 plus all the other steps from this post
That left me with the «Continue using a manually installed driver» option.

Even though that installation failed, some files were installed and they need to be removed. I don’t think you need to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the tty1 virtual console again to do this. Open the File Manager and go to the folder where the .run file is. Right click in the open space and select Open in Terminal. Use the command you used to try installing the driver and add —uninstall to the end. For example:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-384.130.run --uninstall
Then reboot and check in Driver Manager if the Continue using a manually installed driver message is gone.

i wasn’t aware there you tried installing the nvidia.run package from the nvidia site. purging nvidia with my command would have no effect unless you also used the driver manager to install it from there also. naturally if you tried installing a driver IT has to be removed first in order to try another one
@roblm has your info on removing the nvidia.run then purge nvidia again if you installed it from driver manager each time REBOOT if you install or uninstall any drivers

My bad. I did not actually do this. I must have done it on the beta version of Tara. I know this because I have checked the home directory (where i placed the .run file) and the recycle bin, and the .run file is nowhere to be found. I also checked Chrome’s history to make sure I didn’t download it this install iteration.
Since I wasn’t going anywhere on the beta version, I figured that maybe a fresh install of a stable version of Tara would do the trick. My bad.
So, the steps I actually followed, from a fresh Mint install, were:
1. Download nvidia-driver-390 from Driver Manager, reboot
2. ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-driver-390 plus all the other steps from this post

I’ve never seen the Continue using a manually installed driver message unless the driver was download from Nvidia’s website, but looking at the picture in your second post, you’re not seeing that message now, is that correct?
I need to see more info. Use these commands and post the output:

Open the Terminal and expand it to full screen, or the complete output of one of these commands won’t show. Use these commands:

I get update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-20-generic
and thats it. A one liner.

The nouveau driver should not be loading because it is blacklisted in the /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf file, but that depends on the initramfs tool working. I wonder if that guide you used altered one of the files that tool depends on to work correctly. Use this command to reinstall it:
sudo apt install --reinstall initramfs-tools initramfs-tools-bin initramfs-tools-core
Reboot.

Ran the reinstall, rebooted, nvidia-settings returns same message.
Im guessing I should re-run the initramfs cmd. It returns the same one liner as before. After rebooting, nvidia driver still refusing to load.
Доброго времени суток! Недавно перешёл на Debian Linux после довольно долгого опыта с Linux Mint и мне безумно понравился этот дистрибутив. Всё работает отлично, но есть одна проблема: ни одна версия проприетарного драйвера Nvidia не хочет нормально работать, а некоторые и вовсе не встают и, следовательно, я не могу задействовать видеокарту нормально. Если верить сведениям от nvidia-detect, то моя видеокарта поддерживает последний видеодрайвер (440.100.2) (пакет nvidia-driver). В общем, устанавливаю я его — вроде бы всё хорошо, перезагружаюсь — не работает Nvidia X Server! Ну, думаю, ладно, может прокатит от sudo запустить его… Захожу в терминал, запускаю оттуда и мне он пишет следующее:

Собственно, я не могу войти в так называемую «панель управления», чтобы настроить параметры драйвера..
Пытаюсь это всё сделать на ноутбуке с гибридной графикой, по параметрам вот что:

И что бы я не делал — не получается решить проблему. Даже ставил Legacy-драйвер версии 390 — там уже Nvidia X Server открывался, но на что-то жаловался и в панели было доступно только два пункта. Подключал PPA-репозитории от Ubuntu (ppa:graphics-drivers) — оттуда пакеты качаются, но при установке пишет, что всё завершилось ошибкой и в итоге пакеты nvidia-driver-xxxx и nvidia-dkms-xxxx не устанавливаются. В общем, это я могу списать на то, что пакеты для Ubuntu не могут встать на Debian, т.к. дистрибутивы разные, хотя я могу быть неправ. Даже скачивал с официального сайта Nvidia пакет .run и пытался из-под него установить — оттуда вообще ставиться не хочет.
Вот, что пишет при попытке установить из run-пакета:

Вот такая беда… Уже несколько дней пытаюсь найти решение проблемы — никак не найду и никак не решу проблему. Например, в Linux Mint, на котором я сидел ранее, всё работало нормально — драйвер вставал, Nvidia X Server работал, правда, был тиринг, но я его решил быстро. А вот с Debian мне что-то не повезло…
Можно ли как-то решить эту проблему? Бог с ним, с этим run-пакетом, с репозиториев можно как-то нормально их поставить? Или нужно копать куда-то в другую сторону? Мне не хочется переходить на Mint обратно, мне Debian очень понравился и на нём отлично всё работает, за исключением проприетарного драйвера. Заранее спасибо!

После обновления, где-то в начале февраля, перестал работать драйвер nvidia. В nvidia-settings вообще пустота!!!

Оказалось драйвер nvidia можно и ручками выбрать sudo prime-select nvidia или on-demand.
Но после ручного выбора имею черный экран. Alt+F2 работает. Правил xorg.conf по вики, загрузился, но экран весь кривой.
Вылечил вот так:

Вот тоже подумываю откатить. Перестал работать выход из ждущего режима, нормально только при выборе интел. Нет профилей аудио.
PS Откатил до 450 версии — спокойствие вернулось !!! И видеовыход работает, появились аудиопрофили, да и ждущий режим работает!!!
