Im getting this on my 64bit gentoo box, any idea how to solve it?
I also get the same thing even with vpncmd running as root

TUN/TAP needs to be enabled to create Virtual Network Adapter to do so

excuse me, how do you solve this problem finally? I met this problem before, but I haven’t found a solution yet.

@Eric7Coding depends on your Linux distro, but as @gulbuhar mentioned, you might need to enable tun/tap in the kernel and recompile and install the kernel

For what it’s worth, I ran into this issue using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and solved it via…

sudo modprobe -v tunnel4
sudo modprobe -v ip_tunnel
sudo /usr/local/vpnclient/vpnclient stop
sudo /usr/local/vpnclient/vpnclient start
/usr/local/vpnclient/vpncmd

NOTE: this change is only temporary and after a reboot these kernel modules will be removed again. You can auto-load them on every reboot by adding them permanently to /etc/modules via:

echo -e "tunnel4nip_tunnel" | sudo tee -a /etc/modules

For someone using WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), this does not entirely work. What could be some other workaround? Creating a virtual NIC in windows and somehow mapping it into the VPN client?

Sorry, I can’t help you out here. The way I see it you have two options here:

Use the Windows Client
Run Linux in a VM (on VirtualBox, Hyper-V, or the like)

The Ubuntu 16.04 solution did not work for me on Ubuntu 18.04. Did anyone manage to run the vpnclient on Bionic?

Ubuntu 20.04 here, everything is working.

Make sure to use sudo, i.e. sudo ./vpnclient start.
(Didn’t need to modprobe anything).

I’ve resolved error with adding Virtual Network adapter by loading Universal TUN/TAP device driver.

Network Adapter Code 31 error in Device Manager may occur in a Windows based computer (Windows 10, 8, 7 or Vista) if the appropriate driver for the Network (Ethernet/LAN) controller is not installed properly or is corrupted. The full description of the «code 31» error in «Device status» information box is:

«This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)«.

When the Code 31 error occurs in one (or more) device(s), then the corresponding device appears with a yellow exclamation mark sign, next to it, in Device Manager.

In several cases the Ethernet «Code 31» error, can occur despite the fact that the correct driver of the Ethernet controller is already installed. At these cases you have to perform some additional steps to resolve the error code 31 in your Network Adapter.

This tutorial contains detailed steps and instructions on how to resolve Ethernet Controller Code 31 error in Device Manager.

How to Fix the Network Controller Code 31 error in Device Manager.

Solution 1. Install the latest driver for Network Controller to fix the Network Adapter Code 31 error.

Step 1. Download the latest Network Adapter Drivers.

1. From another computer, navigate to your computer’s manufacturer support site (if you own a branded PC or laptop) or to the motherboard’s support site (for onboard network adapters) and download the latest driver version for the Network Controller. After the download, copy the driver to a USB drive and then transfer the downloaded driver to the problematic computer.

Step 2. Install Ethernet Adapter Drivers.

1. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the downloaded Ethernet adapter driver on your computer.

2. Check if your Ethernet Controller is working properly. If Code 31 error is still displayed in Device Manager, then proceed to Solution 2.

Solution 2. Remove Invalid Registry keys & re-install LAN Adapter drivers to resolve the Code 31 error in Network Adapter.

Step 1. Open Registry Editor & Backup Registry.

Open Registry editor. To do that:

1. Simultaneously press the “Win” + “R” keys to load the Run dialog box.

2. Type regedit and press Enter to open Registry Editor.

IMPORTANT: Before you continue, first take a backup of your registry. To do that:

From the main menu, go to File & select Export.

Specify a destination location (e.g. your Desktop), give a filename to the exported registry file (e.g. “RegistryUntouched”), select at Export range: All and press Save.

Step 2. Delete invalid registry keys.

1. After you have backed up your registry, navigate (from the left pane) to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlNetwork

2. Now look at the right pane to find and delete the following (REG_BINARY) value:

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlNetworkConfig)

3. Close Registry Editor.

Step 2. Uninstall the Network Adapter from Device Manager.

1. Open Device Manager. To do that:

Press “Windows” + “R” keys to load the Run dialog box.
Type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter.

2. Expand Network Adapters.

3. Right-Click at the yellow-marked Ethernet Adapter and select Uninstall. *

* Note: If asked, do not remove the driver files from the system. It is not necessary.

4. Restart you computer and let Windows install the Ethernet drivers automatically. *

* Note: If Windows cannot find the appropriate driver for the Ethernet Controller or if you have deleted the driver during uninstall then you have to download and install the latest driver version for your Network Adapter from the manufacturer’s support site.

Question
Have an issue with one virtual server running Windows 2003 R2 (spk 2) after installation of 2008 spk 2 on the host. When trying to install a network adapter on the VM, the installation fails reporting a file missing. Viewing device manager reveals the adapter with the yellow exclamation symbol. The device status originally was Code 1, but after an attempted repair of integrated services its now at Code 31 «the device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device».

If I try and install a legacy NIC it appears to be ok, but when the properties are opened no clients or protocols are listed. Attempting to add a protocol fails as none are available.

Has anyone any idea how to fix this issue?

Answers

You have created a VMbus layer mismatch by updating the host — and therefore updating the VMBus of the host, but not the corresponding Integration Components in the VM.

After applying any update to a host that affects Hyper-V — the Integrations Components within each VM will need to be updated.
Networking is simply the first layer (most sensative) that shows the symptom.

This is why the Legacy Adapter is working — it is emulated and does not require integration witht he VMBus layer — it simply sits on top of it — it does not try to directly access it.

If the ICs won’t upgrade properly in the VM, then you will need to try uninstalling them, canceling the new device dialogs and re-installing the ICs.

Просмотрел ихние форумы, фаирвол я не ставил, все делаю под рутом, под линусом вируалка адптера у шефа поставилась, а тут не хочет((

Tun/Tap подгружены

в конфиге есть параметр отвечающий за уровень логирования?

Предскажем будущее hw по логам и дампу, снимем сглаз и порчу с рута, поможем придумать пароль(С)

Нет, я даже подключение создать не могу, все упирается в начало — создать виртуальный адаптер .а потом оно пишет что драйверов не находит ну или как то так.

А логи я везде перерыл, не нашел, в /var/log их нету, куда он их пишет, черт его знает, а без него никуда, т.к. на сервере такая муть стоит((

Во FreeBSD не поддерживается работа клиента, всё ответы в мануале SoftEther.

А может быть проблема из-за того что tun грузится с ядра, а tap отдельно?

Знаете, покупала vpn на этом сайте _https://finevpn.org.
Конечно, нет бесплатной тестировочной недели ,как в avast, но так ка мне самой трудно было б это сделать,то знающие специалисты без проблем помогли)

Не морочьте голову — пользуйтесь проверенным PureVPN. Тем более сейчас они за годовой абонемент ещё год бесплатно дают.
Это при 5 логинах и сотнях серверов по миру.
Сам под ними третий год всей семьёй.
