    cl.exe is Visual Studio compiler. So it should be in your Visual Studio installation directory such as C:/Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 10.0VCcebin.

    If there is not a cl.exe in your directory, please try to reinstall your VS.

    If the file is in your directory, you can repair VS.

    In addition, can you tell some other detail about your issue? For example, which version of Visual Studio and Windows have you used? Have your installed
    two different kinds of Visual Studio?

It looks like you’re using node-gyp v3.6.0, which added VS2017 support, so that’s a good start.

KeyError: '2017' suggests node-gyp can’t detect the version of Visual Studio. Perhaps try forcing it using:

npm config set msvs_version 2017

@lovell i did every thing because i run the npm config set msvs_version 2017 command thats why it showing KeyError: '2017' if i remove it it will show another error
MSBUILD : error MSB3428: Could not load the Visual C++ component "VCBuild.exe". To fix this, 1) install the .NET Framew ork 2.0 SDK, 2) install Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 3) add the location of the component to the system path if it i s installed elsewhere. and if i run it with npm config set msvs_version 2015 if will show a another error

error MSB4019: The imported proj ect "C:Microsoft.Cpp.Default.props" was not found. Confirm that the path in the <Import> declaration is correct, and t hat the file exists on disk.

i install all the component needed to run like here it says
nodejs/node-gyp#1144

but still not working in this pc

I want to install bcrypt on a windows 10 machine with visual studio community 2015, Python v2.7.3 installed but i get the following error.

node version v4.2.1 node-gyp v3.0.3

I had the same problem with another module.

  • Install visual studio community 2013
  • Run npm config set msvs_version 2013 —global
  • Run npm install bcrypt

Easily, I fixed this issue by simply creating C++ project in VS2015.

Basically, when u choose to create a c++ project, VS2015 will ask you to install a certain component, you just let it install. The issue will get fixed. (BTW, I am using VS2015 on Win10)

I had a problem installing karma (npm module). I installed Visual c++ from visual studio 2015 install and it worked.

I had a similar problem while building a typical hello_world.c console application. The reason was that I decided to install VS2015 to «C:program files (x86)msvc14», but the installer installed cl.exe to the default «c:program files (x86)Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0» path. Which is obviously a serious bug in the setup program.

I merged all the content of «Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0» into the «msvc14» directory, and now all works fine.

Putting this here in case someone has the same issue:

I already had the C++ libraries installed.

Updating Node worked for me.

I assume the older version of node just didn’t support my VS2017.

Just gonna drop this here in case someone needs this to work with VS 2017 and ethereum web3.js. I faced this problem when installing web3.js

  1. Update Node.js to 8.11.1
  2. Create a Visual C++ Project in VS 2017, and make sure it built succesfully

Set the config msvs_version

npm config set msvs_version 2017 —global

then npm install web3 -g —save

I’m using Windows 8.1. I installed Visual Studio 2015 community edition. When I run npm install -g generator-keystone, I get the error at the bottom. I tried running the following commands, but I’m still getting the same results.

I went into Visual Studio and created a Visual C++ project, which installed several libraries. npm install worked after that.

I went to Users[my-user].windows-build-tools — an install file for VS Build-tools was there (for 2017 it’s vs_BuildTools.exe), I ran and installed it.

After that I ran npm install --global --production windows-build-tools
(«Option 1» from here).

Then it worked.

If your project is very old, try a different platform. In one case I changed Project -> Properties -> Platform Toolset from Windows XP to a newer platform, then picked Rebuild Solution.

Since I don’t have 50 reputation I can’t comment to a couple of the questions on here.

  1. The bin folder that one of the posters is referring to is «C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual Studio2019CommunityMSBuildCurrentBin» this could be different for other users based on what version of Visual Studio you have installed on your system. Guessing that they are just putting msbuild on the PATH without more information.

  2. Another poster put that they changed 140 to 142 and it worked. They are talking about the «PlatformToolset» version in the vcxproj file. The reason this fix worked for them is that they have Visual Studio 2019 and the vcxproj file was set up to build on Visual Studio 2015. If they are working with other people and push their project the next person to pull it could have the same issue if they are using a different version of Visual Studio than 2019.

I use visual basic 2019 latest version. Couldn’t run a project with toolset 140. Insted it pops the message TRK0005: Failed to locate: CL.exe. I change it to 142 and it works.

I’m using Windows 8.1. I installed Visual Studio 2015 community edition. When I run npm install -g generator-keystone, I get the error at the bottom. I tried running the following commands, but I’m still getting the same results.

I went into Visual Studio and created a Visual C++ project, which installed several libraries. npm install worked after that.

I went to Users[my-user].windows-build-tools — an install file for VS Build-tools was there (for 2017 it’s vs_BuildTools.exe), I ran and installed it.

After that I ran npm install --global --production windows-build-tools
(«Option 1» from here).

Then it worked.

If your project is very old, try a different platform. In one case I changed Project -> Properties -> Platform Toolset from Windows XP to a newer platform, then picked Rebuild Solution.

    cl.exe is Visual Studio compiler. So it should be in your Visual Studio installation directory such as C:/Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 10.0VCcebin.

    If there is not a cl.exe in your directory, please try to reinstall your VS.

    If the file is in your directory, you can repair VS.

    In addition, can you tell some other detail about your issue? For example, which version of Visual Studio and Windows have you used? Have your installed
    two different kinds of Visual Studio?

I’m trying to execute the following command in a Node.js project on Windows 8:

npm install web3@1.0.0-beta.24

But I’m gettig an error that I have node idea how to deal with.

This packages seems to be requiring native compiling. You need to install Visual Studio C++ Build Tools for the same. You can download the same from below link

Also after that you need to make sure that CL.exe is available in your path. It would be on a path like C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 10.0VCcebin. This would change based on the version of build tools you have installed.

You will need to make sure to update your Windows PATH environment variable if the setup doesn’t do that for you.

Also if npm still fails, you can always try using yarn

yarn add web3@1.0.0-beta.24

ERR! Failed at the scrypt@6.0.3 install script.

The error is caused by the scrypt package because node-gyp is unable to rebuild,

try running cmd as administrator and run npm install scrypt@6.0.3 , if it doesn’t work try node-gyp rebuild or reinstall it

if you fix your issue with node-gyp you should have Cl.exe at the right place in the process of installing node-gyp

I was on the same boat and most of the answers found online couldn’t help (or not 100% workable)with this rebuild error. After trying on several different methods, I found this way works on my machine (Windows 10 Pro). Now, I’m able to install web3 with no issue. (Or other packages related to node-gyp issues, such as «truffle unbox react»)

The steps I concluded is as below:

  1. Install NodeJS, Git
  2. Download Windows Visual Studio 2015

  3. Open Visual Studio 2015 and create «new project…»

    • Select «Create new C++ project»
    • You should see a menu that VS requested to install «Common Tools for Visual C++ 2015» and «Windows 8.1 SDK and Universal CRT SDK» (some processes in scrypt required tools from this Windows 8.1 SDK files)
    • Select both and install

  4. Install/link python through npm command

    • npm --add-python-to-path="true" --debug install --global windows-build-tools
  5. Set msvs_version to 2015
    • npm config set msvs_version 2015 --global
  6. Install web3
    • npm install web3

For the reference:
My npm version : 5.6.0
My node version: 8.9.4

Убедитесь, что для параметра «Набор инструментов платформы» в разделе «Свойства проекта»> «Общие параметры» выбрана правильная версия Visual Studio, которую вы используете.

В моем случае, я скачал проект с GitHub, который был установлен на Visual Studio 2015, и я использую VS 2017. После изменения он работал.

cl.exe это компиль для студии. иногда помогает переустановка, но более вероятная причина: антивирус блокировал либо вирусом заразился. как вариант можно найти человека у которого такая же сборка студии и перекинуть исполняемый файл в папку студии(…..VCcebin).

Если не хочешь мучатся, то удаляешь студию, прогоняешь все антивирусом, удаляешь антивирус(если стоял), и ставишь пакет MVS в дефолте

It looks like you’re using node-gyp v3.6.0, which added VS2017 support, so that’s a good start.

KeyError: '2017' suggests node-gyp can’t detect the version of Visual Studio. Perhaps try forcing it using:

npm config set msvs_version 2017

@lovell i did every thing because i run the npm config set msvs_version 2017 command thats why it showing KeyError: '2017' if i remove it it will show another error
MSBUILD : error MSB3428: Could not load the Visual C++ component "VCBuild.exe". To fix this, 1) install the .NET Framew ork 2.0 SDK, 2) install Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 3) add the location of the component to the system path if it i s installed elsewhere. error MSB4019: The imported proj ect "C:Microsoft.Cpp.Default.props" was not found. Confirm that the path in the <Import> declaration is correct, and t hat the file exists on disk.

i install all the component needed to run like here it says
