I hope I am posting to the right forum but I have a mystery on my hands. I am running a scheduled task successfully. It is set to run when the user is either logged on or off. It set to run with the highest privileges. The account it runs as is in the administrators group. The account is also set to run as a batch job and to run as a service. This account is used in multiple tasks 3 running daily and 1 running every 15 minutes. When the Job starts I get these errors:

Event ID 706. Task Compatibility module failed to update task «Insert job name here” to the required status 0. Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942405.

Event ID 709. Task Compatibility module failed to update task «Insert job name here”. Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942405.

I have tried changing the times of the task, permissions on the xml file it creates to no avail. I even verified the account password many times.

What is the mystery part is the job runs successfully. According to some sites, Error Value: 2147942405 is a permissions issue, but I can see no issues within the job log of the job that is run that it is failing or in the task manager history.

Question

I have a one-site SCCM 2012 installation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 server with 16 GB of RAM.

I am currently upgradering our MS Forefront to MS Endpoint, and during this process I install the SCCM agent on all our servers.

On many servers (>50) there has been no problems, but on a few I get the error: «Last Installation Error: 2147942405» in the SCCM console.

It is on Windows server 2008 R2 standard, 2003 standard SP2 and even on a XP Pro SP3 computer I get the error.

All servers/workstations are joined to the domain and I have added the SCCM installation account to the local administrator group on each server.

Our Active Directory schema has been succesfull extended with the SCCM attributes.

The eventlog does not say anything on the failed servers/computers.

The only thing I can find on the error number is http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/2011/10/27/sccm-client-install-error-codes/ and the windows firewall is disabled on all the failed servers/computers.

I have been through the http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh427342.aspx#BKMK_ClientInstallLog site, but I cannot find any logfiles than can help me locate the error more precisely from the SCCM server.

Can you help me?

Answers

Have you tried to install cm12 client on the server manually?

Scheduled Tasks — Server 2008 R2

I have an issue with scheduled tasks running on Server 2008 R2. We have several tasks setup on several servers, some do the same thing, others are different. These tasks are set to run «whether the user is logged in or not» with a known good username and password.

These tasks will run great for about two weeks. Then they start failing (not doing the entire task) with no error message. If I then change it to run only when the user is logged on, they work fine. I can only set it to run «whether the user is logged in or not» after I restart the server.

Popular Topics in Windows Server

When you say no error messages are you referring to the event logs or to possible errors which will show from the application that is scheduled to run? Are they standard Server 2008 items that are scheduled or from applications outside of Microsoft?

Have you tried making an admin level service account to run the task

Have you tried making an admin level service account to run the task

Running with a domain admin account at the moment. The account has ‘log on as a service’ rights.

No error message ont the task in task scheduler. If I look at the history, everything says it ran fine. But the batch script didn’t run.

Does your script reference a mapped drive letter? You can try logging your batch file output by adding ‘>> c:pathlog.txt’ to the end of your commands.

Silly question — but has the password changed or the account got locked?

I’m not sure from the thread whether this is the case or not. But this is often the case if a scheduled task stops working

In task scheduler, what code does it list under Last Run?

No script references a mapped letter, only UNC full paths (if any.) Some scripts do reference other scripts on the local storage. I have logging on almost all of the scripts. Some of them start, then just stop. Some of them don’t even start.

Not the case. Password set to never expire, user cannot reset, and I use it to log onto the system sometimes.

In task scheduler, what code does it list under Last Run?

The task says it completed successfully. 0x0. This is when it runs correctly, and when it starts to act up after about two weeks. It seems to be something with task scheduler. It is almost as if the task starts on the schedule, then it skips the script, then it ends the task. Then, after I restart the server, everything works fine without intervention (for about two more weeks.)

And, I have nothing scheduled to run every two weeks, that I know of. All of my tasks run once daily, or every X minutes daily.

Strange. 0x0 is the code for a successful run. What happens if you try run it manually during the times it’s playing up?

If I run the task manually, nothing changes. It still does not run correctly, but says it does. If I then run the batch file from the command line, the batch file runs perfectly.

I had these things running on Server 2003 and they always ran great, never had problems. New servers with Server 2008 and I get problems. I thought I had all bases covered before reaching out to the community. Just hoping someone had the same issue and figured it out.

Does the account you’re running the task under have permissions to the script/executables. etc.?

Does your script use the full path to the executable(s)? For example telling the script to run just «program.exe» may not work if the path isn’t defined properly. If the program(s) are in a specific folder you can set the «Start In» value for the Action to the path of the program(s).

Yes for all. As I have said, they work perfectly for almost exactly two weeks, then stop working, but they still say they are working. Thank you for your efforts though.

Maybe it’s a RATH error? Have you tried recreating the task?

RATH, I dont understand. I have recreated the tasks before, issue persists. I am thinking it is a MS problem, as it seems that Task Scheduler is actually the problem, not the tasks. But, looks like I can’t restart Task Scheduler in services.msc

That’s very odd. One last question — how did you create the task?

Haha, never heard about RATH. Tasks were created using task scheduler. They run .cmd and .bat files.

If you run it manually, it fails too, yes? Trigger & see what’s captured in the Event Monitor.

If you run it manually, it fails too, yes? Trigger & see what’s captured in the Event Monitor.

If it is failing to run automatically, it will also fail if I go into task scheduler and manually run. But, if I go to the command line and initiate the script that the task does, the script runs correctly. Right now, things are running fine. I still have a few days before it typically acts up.

Where is the batch file located? Is it in a deep folder structure? If so try moving it to something like c:temp.

I’m thinking the event log might be our best clue to why it’s failing.

Alright, not working today. The task history, in Task Scheduler, looks perfectly consistant with when it works. But, there are some errors in Event Viewer. See below:

Task Scheduler failed to start «faxout» task for user «PCGR-DOMAdministrator». Additional Data: Error Value 2147750687.

Task Scheduler failed to start Task Engine «» process due to an error occurring in «LUAIsElevatedToken» . Command=»taskeng.exe» . Additional Data: Error Value: 2147943645.

Task Compatibility module failed to update task «EMRSQL Assure Scanned Doc Transfer.job» to the required status 0. Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942405.

But, even though we get these errors, I still get success on other tasks that arent performing:

Task Scheduler launched «» instance of task «faxout» for user «Administrator» .

Task Engine «S-1-5-21-1844237615-1229272821-839522115-500:PCGR-DOMAdministrator:Password:» received a message from Task Scheduler service requesting to launch task «faxout» .

* Reboot on-prem agent after job completion (#11359)

* Reboot on-prem Mac agent at the end of a test run

* Use agent-rebooter template capable of targeting the xamarin org

* Simplify agent-rebooter condition to only include the agent pool check

* Diagnostics: Show agent agentPool parameter setting

* Powershell block step

* Diagnostics: Single line echo statement

* Test: Simplify output to not include parameter setting

* Pass through the agent pool name rather than the pool object

* Show agent pool at the beginning of the job

* Remove agentPoolName parameter and condition

The agent-rebooter template will only take action when the agent is in an on-prem pool. It will not attempt to reboot an agent in a hosted pool

* Try placing group Xamarin-Secrets after the variables template

* Xamarin-Secrets is already included in the variables template

* Directly use the Xamarin public pool access token keyvault value

* Capture the agent pool access token in a variable

* Move AgentPoolAccessToken definition into device-tests

* Updated rebooter template eliminates need for organization and project parameters

* Temporarily remove all steps except the rebooter

* Restore the original steps

* Focus testing on the rebooter

* Restore all steps

* Comment noting that the rebooter template must always be the last step in the job

* Agent-rebooter capability was released to production and so target in yaml-templates main

Fixes #11685

Specifying the ForegroundScale with a dot caused an issue on systems
with commas as decimal separators. The image got upscaled instead of
downscaled on those systems because the ForegroundScale was parsed
without passing InvariantCulture as culture info. Because of this,
it only worked on systems with a dot as a decimal separator.

* Fix test for release disabled button

* Add empty PointerOver states to Buttons to reduce confusion (#11842)

We've had multiple users run into issues with the Pressed VisualState on Buttons (see #9715 and #8309) - they set up a Pressed state, and then are confused when the state remains after releasing the Button. This is happening* because the Button is moving into the PointerOver state, which does not exist in their VisualState lists. Since the target state is not found, the Pressed state remains in effect until the user leaves the PointerOver state.

This is similar to the behavior of a Pressed state with no PointerOver state defined in UWP/WinUI. The solution is to define a PointerOver state. To reduce confusion, we should just add a PointerOver state to our default templates.

* At the time these bugs were originally opened, the problem was likely the Focused state, because PointerOver didn't exist yet. But in the most recent release, PointerOver replaces Focused as the source of the problem; the Focused issue is dealt with by #11840.

* [xamlc] remove `LoadInSeparateAppDomain` and `static` state (#11982)

Fixes: https://github.com/dotnet/maui/issues/11885

Looking at the JITStats report in PerfView (for MSBuild.exe):

| Name                                    | JitTime (ms) |
| ---                                     |          --: |
| Microsoft.Maui.Controls.Build.Tasks.dll |        214.0 |
| Mono.Cecil                              |        119.0 |

It appears that `Microsoft.Maui.Controls.Build.Tasks.dll` spends a lot
of time in the JIT. What is confusing, is this was an incremental
build where everything should already be loaded. The JIT's work should
be done already? I don't see the same behavior for Android MSBuild
tasks or Windows App SDK tasks.

The cause appears to be usage of `[LoadInSeparateAppDomain]` in .NET MAUI.

However, we can't just *remove this* as there would be complications...

`[LoadInSeparateAppDomain]` also conveniently resets all `static`
state when `<XamlCTask/>` runs again. Meaning that future incremental
builds would potentially use old (garbage) values. There are several
places that cache Mono.Cecil objects for performance reasons. Really
weird bugs would result if we didn't address this.

To make things correct *and* remove `[LoadInSeparateAppDomain]`:

* Move all `static` state to a `XamlCache` class as instance values.

* Each `ILContext` has an instance of `XamlCache`.

* Any child `ILContext`'s such as with `DataTemplate` are passed the
  parent's `XamlCache`.

* Various `static` extension methods now require a `XamlCache` to be
  passed in. This allows unit tests to do this as well.

* Other `*Visitor` or `*Converter` types have an instance of
  `ILContext`, so they can access `ILContext.Cache` as needed.

Unfortunately, I had to make small changes to lots of lines for this.

Testing these changes inside Visual Studio with a `dotnet new maui`
project template:

    Before:
    XamlCTask = 743 ms
    XamlCTask = 706 ms
    XamlCTask = 692 ms
    After:
    XamlCTask = 128 ms
    XamlCTask = 134 ms
    XamlCTask = 117 ms

This saves about ~587ms on incremental builds on all platforms, an 82%
improvement. This will help even more on large solutions with multiple
.NET MAUI projects, where `<XamlCTask/>` runs multiple times.

* [android] remove Xamarin.AndroidX.Legacy.Support.V4 (#12232)

In reviewing:

https://github.com/dotnet/maui/issues/10901#issuecomment-1354975448

I found `Xamarin.AndroidX.Legacy.Support.V4` triggers the warning:

    R8 : warning : Missing class androidx.window.extensions.WindowExtensions

`AndroidX.Legacy.Support.V4` is a package for supporting *really* old
Android API levels like 7, 11, etc.

Details here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/59484158

The Android workload in .NET 6/7 only supports API 21+. That made me
think, why is .NET MAUI using `AndroidX.Legacy.Support.V4` at all?
Turns out, it's not!

I tried directly removing the package, and got:

    srcCoresrcPlatformAndroidMauiSwipeRefreshLayout.cs(10,16): error CS0234: The type or namespace name 'SwipeRefreshLayout' does not exist in
the namespace 'AndroidX' (are you missing an assembly reference?)

It looks like this is just a dependency of
`Xamarin.AndroidX.Legacy.Support.V4`. Instead we can just use this
package directly instead:

    <PackageReference Include="Xamarin.AndroidX.SwipeRefreshLayout" Version="1.1.0.10" />

The end result, is we just removed Android packages that are not used
at all. We still use the same library for `SwipeRefreshLayout`.

This is a follow up to a post that I made a few weeks ago. Here’s the link to the original post for context: Periodically Backing up Files Stored on Server

To sum it all up, I created a scheduled task on my server to execute a batch file twice a week. The batch file produces the expected result, so there’s no issue there. The problem is that I used my user credentials in the scheduled task to get it to run. I found out today that the task didn’t run over the weekend because I had changed my password on Friday. When I went to the scheduled task settings and changed the password to the current one, however, it worked without issue.

My question is, what account should I be using to execute this scheduled task so that I don’t have to worry about this same scenario happening again? I tried creating a dedicated account that’s sole purpose is to execute this task, but I can’t get it to run. I keep getting access denied while running the batch file.

Is there something built into Windows Server that could help? Thanks!

    EDIT: I was on my phone when I posted this earlier and I missed the part that you were getting access denied. So if you are trying copy data to another server, the account you used most likely doesn’t have access to the destination and/or the account needs admin rights on the PC where the backup is occuring.

    gMSA’s are pretty awesome for several reasons. It’s an AD account where you don’t know the password and it auto rotates the password every 30 days by default. You create gMSA’s via Powershell. You have to assign access as to who is allowed to use this account via powershell and it’s done at the computer account level. So you would assign Server1 the ability to use the gMSA account and no other person or computer can use it(although you can assign multiple servers access to use the same gMSA if you want). gMSA’s can be used to run scheduled tasks, windows services, and IIS apppools to name some examples. Microsoft recommends to use these wherever possible.
