Esxi error caused by file

Hi all, I wondered if anyone here could help me I am having real trouble trying to move a VM from one host to another. I've tried live migration, normal migration, cloning, Veeam backup & restore, downloading VMDK from the datastore, FTPing the VMDK from the datastore and each time these methods fa...

For me the dd says:

vmware # dd conv=noerror if=/vmfs/volumes/datastore2/Data/Data-flat.vmdk  of=/vmfs/volumes/datastore4/Data/Data-flat.vmdk

dd: can’t open ‘/vmfs/volumes/datastore2/Data/Data-flat.vmdk’: Invalid argument

I verified that I could make a disk file of the same size as the source disk:

Error caused by file esxi

I’m having an issue when copying a vmdk to another or same data store (NFS) . this can be from our nfs snapshot folder or even from one folder to another that makes no difference. all other files copy fine.

Is it not vmdk that is the issue but the size of files i don’t know.

We are using ESXi 5

Anyone an idea? we cannot restore any backups out of NFS snapshots due tot this issue

i wrote the problem in the title

error caused by file [path to vmdl] during copy of a vm from snapshot on NFS data Store

we try to copy a vmdk out of a nfs snapshot (flat files) to the same or another data store and this copy fails with error error caused by file [path to vmdk]

Copy is done in datastore browser. small files seem to work. even vmdks from 8gb copy fine. when copying 30gb the error occurs. And the errur occurs instantly so not after copying half the file.

Cannot Clone or backup a VM

We are having an issue regarding a certain VM. we can’t seem to back it up using veeam or clone it via vcenter.

error on vcenter: using ESXi 6.5

«Error caused by file /vmfs/volumes/(datastore name)/(vmdk file)»

though however, we can freely migrate it through our 3 host but we can’t clone it. hope someone can help me on this please.

I’ve seen something like this. The problem (I saw before) was an issue with changed block tracking backups corrupting the .vmdk file. Virtually identical description; can move between hosts, VM runs fine, can’t back up or clone. First, try turning off the CBT in your .vmx config file. Shut down the VM. Right click the VM, Edit Settings>Options>General>Config. Parameters. Set CTK to False. Alternately, you can open the .vmx file in a text editor and look for «CTKdisallow=true» and make sure it’s in there. If it says false, change it.

Somehow CBT gets wonky and creates a virtual hdd error. This was an issue several years ago and I haven’t see it since and never gave it another thought.

If for some reason this doesn’t fix your issue it’s super easy to revert.

Hi Pete, Thank you on this. will surely try this after my server backup on the guest VM is done. so to prevent future issues, we relied first on a windows server backup utility just to be sure. then after we will try your suggestion. thank you in advance.

Please refrain from using Windows backup to backup a VM. its the wrong tool for the job. use Veeam B&R for VMware (Not Veeam Agent for Windows also).

I agree it’s the wrong tool, but in the case when Veeam isn’t working due to a problem with a VHD not backing up or cloning using the correct tools, I’d use the native Windows backup rather than nothing

I am trying to remove the remnants of a VM and it keeps failing.  It produces the following error.

Failed — Error caused by file /vmfs/volumes/6000972e-bf4c21fc-5190-2cea7f75efa0/Systems72/Systems72_10-flat.vmdk

The object I’m trying to delete is a folder with 13 flat.vmdk files.  I have tried deleting the folder and I have tried the individual files with no success.

I’m working with ESXi 6.7

Edit: I created a folder systems72bad and was able to move the folder and files into that folder but I still can’t delete them.

Esxi error caused by file

We have a number of rogue VMDK files that dont appear to be connected to anything, we can move, rename these files but cannot delete them, they all appear to be -flat files e.g «SRV-FS_1-flat.vmdk»

I have tried the following —

reboot of the vcentre

reboot of the backup server

reboot of the named VM

tried removing from vcentre and the host management pages

the error I get is —

Delete Datastore File

Description Delete the source file or folder from the datastore

State Failed — Error caused by file /vmfs/volumes/59c386ab-acc6bf16-6452-b499bab20938/trashfolder/SRV-VEEAMMGR-flat.vmdk

Can anyone advise how to remove these files?

>>> . that dont appear to be connected to anything
Please don’t mind me asking, but how did you determine this?
.vmdk file are virtual disk files, which contain the user data, and it’s fairly uncommon that they become orphaned.

Many thanks for your response. I have checked each of the hosted servers and none have links to these files. these files are showing date stamps from last year.

I would have thought if the file was renamed the server(s) that had any locks on the files would have gone offline / shown some errors please correct me if I am wrong on this point.

I am looking again at this today, concentrating on the srv-adsync machine.

The one thing that might be of useful info is that we have had a rebuild of the VCENTRE server, which was a windows based to the appliance based, my thoughts are did this faulty vcentre have something still open with these servers when it failed?

the disk store these files are on is our replica store so live machines wouldn’t have been hosted on it

VMware vSphere 7

  • VMNAME.vswp
  • DISKNAME-flat.vmdk
  • DISKNAME-ITERATION-delta.vmdk
  • VMNAME.vmx
  • VMNAME.vmxf
  • vmware.log

It looks like you are uploading to an NFS share, perhaps a NAS, if so enable CIFS/SMB and copy it using windows directly to the NAS

I’m not sure of the finer details of your setup, but hope this helps. I sometimes come across issues with uploading to VMWare Datastores, so I’ve taken to, where possible, uploading using an SCP Client (for example, WinSCP). The issues I generally see is the speed of upload for large ISOs. Uploading using an SCP client is so much faster and more reliable.

You have to enable SSH access on the VMWare ESXi, and of course, it is wise to switch off SSH access afterwards. I’ve pasted in some useful links below rather than reinventing the wheel.

Overall set of steps:

— Enable SSH (either through the ESXi host settings, or from the console of the ESXi host)

— Download an SCP client

— Connect to the VMWare ESXi host/datastore

— Switch off/disable SSH again

Hope it helps. Quick tip, pay close attention to the path that you’re uploading to, being sure to follow the guidance and get the ISO in to the right location.

Had the same problem, your using html5, login using the non html5 option, thinks it’s using flash. html5 not 100% yet.

SSH and SCP are only required for uploads to local host, the OP seemed to be uploading to a remote datastore, over NFS (which for some reason they have now revoked).

They also provided two IP addresses, one of which I assume is the host, the other the IP for the storage, but with things unclear and the OP coming back to edit their post and remove the screenshots, but not update us, we have but to wait for more information.

Had the same problem, your using html5, login using the non html5 option, thinks it’s using flash. html5 not 100% yet.

To be clear, in what version did you have issues?

non-HTML5 is called flex, formerly flash client.

I’m going to be taking a different approach, since you also have the other thread about AD Controllers.

Check DNS first, as others have suggested in both threads, but also check the health of your physical network; notably your switches. You might have a network error caused by cabling, hardware or firmware. This could explain both problems.

Rod-IT, thanks for the extra info. I thought I must be missing something where you made reference to the two IPs and NFS, but if the OP has edited it and i didn’t see the original full post, that makes sense. Thank you for that

That makes no sense at all.

You never mentioned AV at the start, nor did you answer any questions asked, so how are people supposed to aid you if we dont know the details.

For what it’s worth though, you dont get any points for awarding yourself best answer.

I encountered this in our vsphere environment, and to fix it I opened the esxi hosts webpage that the error referenced, and accepted the certificate warning that Chrome/Firefox presented, went back to vsphere and it worked

I have had this error before (vCenter / ESX 6.5) and had to connect directly to a host to upload a file to a datasore when i was unable to upload to the same storage via vCenter.

I have seen this before as well. If you do not have a proper security certificate on your hypervisors, and you try to upload a file through vCenter, the process fails due to the invalid certificate. One work around, normally works, is to browse direct to the hypervisor, get the invalid certificate warning, and proceed to the hypervisor. Once this is done, retry uploading your file through vCenter.
