UPD:

UUID=27652258-937c-4be5-b12b-83ade6d5ff80	/               	ext4    errors=remount-ro,discard,commit=60		0       1

UUID=5667-4C56					/boot/efi       vfat    umask=0077			0       1

tmpfs /var/tmp tmpfs	rw,size=1g 0	0
tmpfs /var/cache/apt/archives tmpfs	rw,noatime,nosuid,size=1g 0	0

UPD:

Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

Hi! I have an issue with resuming from suspend making it completely unusable. My system is suspending fine, but after it resumes it seems like my disk is unavailable. I am unsure how I could get any useful logs that might highlight the issue (assuming they cannot be written to disk?).  I am able to switch sessions (Ctrl-Alt-1 -> 12) but nothing else. I have to hard-press power button 5 seconds to force-restart.

After resuming, I get a black screen with several lines similar to

EXT4-fs error (device sda4): ext4_find_entry: #####: inode ####: comm...: reading directory lblock0

Here is my pm-suspend.log

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

Have you checked out https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Po … _hibernate

Especially:

Suspend/hibernate doesn’t work, or not consistently
There have been many reports about the screen going black without easily viewable errors or the ability to do anything when going into and coming back from suspend and/or hibernate. These problems have been seen on both laptops and desktops. This is not an official solution, but switching to an older kernel, especially the LTS-kernel, will probably fix this.
Sometimes the screen goes black due to device initialization from within the initramfs. Removing any modules you might have in Mkinitcpio#MODULES and rebuilding the initramfs, can possibly solve this issue, specially graphics drivers for early KMS. Initializing such devices before resuming can cause inconsistencies that prevents the system resuming from hibernation. This does not affect resuming from RAM. Also, check this article for the best practices to debug suspend/hibernate issues.

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

The problem seems to be that the HDD doesn’t power up or immediately down again, compare https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=222669 which also suggests this is kernel version related (and maybe to the latest acpi fuss)

@Florblorb, did you try the linux-lts kernel on this matter?

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

I’ve just been trying LTS this morning (4.4.50-1) and unfortunately that does not work either. The symptoms are slightly different however: With LTS attempts to resume either brings me back to a frozen screen (from before I suspended) or a completely unresponsive black screen.

I only have the following module: MODULES=»crc32c-intel», so I dont think there is much here I can remove (also my problem is resuming from RAM).

I will however look into some of the suggestions here: https://01.org/blogs/rzhang/2015/best-p … ate-issues

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

Please post details of your machine.

If you can switch sessions, and assuming you are on F1, can you switch to the session on F2? Do you get a login prompt? Can you log in on F2? When you switch back to F1 (or may be F7) does the screen wake up?

I think your fstab should read :

UUID=86253f76-bc1a-4e6a-9129-db3410eea1b6       /               ext4            rw,relatime,data=ordered        0      1

and

UUID=AFCF-1FF8                                  /boot           vfat            rw                              0       2

a zero means do not do an fsck.

To run fsck on reboot do:

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

I changed my fstab to your suggestion (added the pass values), suspended and resumed, but no change.

With the LTS kernel I was unable to switch sessions (completely frozen). I reverted back to the newer version (currently 4.9.9-1) and I can switch session after resume, however I am only presented with a blinking white cursor and the occasional log message (similar to the one in the first post), and no login prompt. If I had a terminal open before I suspended, and I switch back to my original GUI session (F7) after resume, I can still type in the terminal, but every command will result in a «command not found» on top of a bunch of other messages that seem to indicate no file system present (would it be useful if I took a photo of this or any other log messages?).

Since I am not sure what stats you would like from my machine, here are a few different outputs.

I really appreciate your help so far, please let me know if there are any other outputs that could be of use!

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

Have you tried this:

Suspend / Resume
With kernels older than 4.6, suspending the T460s by closing the lid when running on battery causes the machine to freeze up entirely. This can be worked around by setting the «intel_pstate=no_hwp» kernel parameter or by compiling the kernel with the patch attached to the kernel bug tracking this issue.

From https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Le … kPad_T460s

Might be interesting?

Andrew

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

I just tried with intel_pstate=no_hwp on my kernel options but it seems to make no difference…

Re: Unable to resume after suspend — EXT4-fs error (read-only?)

I just googled

lenovo thinkpad l460 will not resume

and got dozens of leads. Have you worked through them?

HELP! EXT4-fs error, can’t log in!

I have a Raspberry Pi4 running RaspiOS with a USB hard drive.

I lost power to my house last week, and since then I have not been able to log in.

Even with ethernet is plugged in I cannot SSH or ping the device from anywhere else. When I have keyboard & monitor plugged in I can’t type in my username/password, it just doesn’t respond at all.

It is very important that I recover some data from this device, any help will be very much appreciated!

When I boot up I get these messages
EXT4-fs error (device sda1): ext4_validate_block_bitmap:390: comm fallocate bg 2960: bad block bitmap checksum

Not sure if you solved it. It’s been a while. I can’t walk you through the whole process of solving this, but make sure you make a copy of your SD card before experimenting around. Put it into some other PC and save the image from the card. In Linux this is done using «dd». I assume you already tried fsck /dev/<Your Device>? If not, try that first.

Example:

mmcblk0 179:0 0 59.5G 0 disk
mmcblk0p1 179:1 0 2.2G 0 part
mmcblk0p2 179:2 0 1K 0 part
mmcblk0p5 179:5 0 32M 0 part
mmcblk0p6 179:6 0 256M 0 part /boot
mmcblk0p7 179:7 0 27.3G 0 part /

mmcblk0p7 will rather be something like /dev/sdc7

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/mmcblk0p7/ of=/your_backupdir/raspi-backup-home.img bs=1M

Do not play around with this. If you use some disk descriptor in of= it will overwrite whatever there is.
You might be able to use something like /dev/sdc and write it to raspi-whole-SD.img, then you can write it to a new SD card and save your data by using the a command like:

Code: Select all

dd if=/your_backupdir/raspi-whole-SD.img of=/dev/<insert CORRECT Descriptor here> bs=1M

<insert CORRECT Descriptor without a number here> has to be what shows up after you put in the new card in the system you’re working on, use lsblk twice to see the difference. Make very sure that this isn’t some other disk, or that data is gone for good (maybe have a backup or use a computer where it doesn’t matter).

Check fineshed: no errors found

Press any key to reboo t your system

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11)  built in shell (ash)

Например System Rescue, Parted Magic, Ultimate Boot CD и т.д.
Google  :)

EXT4-fs error on boot? [resolved, I hope]

On boot, after everything is done except the login prompt I get:

Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, type «journalctl -xb» to view system logs, «systemctl reboot» to reboot, «systemctl default» to try again to boot into default mode.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue)

If I «Crontol-D» and login, then «journalctl -xb» at the end is:

Does this mean my hard drive is FUBAR?
Is there something I should run to fix this?
The only things I can find that relate to this are bugs and patches to the kernel.

UPD:

Ext4 fs error device sda3

Does anyone know what this means?

Код:
[ 305.274910] EXT4-fs (sda3): error count: 1
[ 305.274916] EXT4-fs (sda3): initial error at 1300215660: htree_dirblock_to_tree:586: inode 5382874: block 21504551
[ 305.274924] EXT4-fs (sda3): last error at 1300215660: htree_dirblock_to_tree:586: inode 5382874: block 21504551

fsck reports no problems and the system runs fine, but this shows up in dmesg after every first emerge action performed since boot (though that may be a coincidence).
The disk is brand new (

4 months old), but I have had some issues with it in the past (which my IT guy assures me were all my own fault and not a hardware problem).

Thanks for any insights

I would assume it is some kind of filesystem corruption.

Disclaimer: this may be wrong, or even stupid, but it’s probably the next thing I’d do.

1. Figure out what file it is. You can use ‘find -inum’ to get the filename of whatever is using inode 5382874

First, cd to the filesystem root of the ext4 filesystem in question (i.e., the filesystem’s mount point)
Then, do

Код:
find -xdev -inum 5382874

That should tell you the filename of whatever is using the offending inode.

2. Figure out what the file is. You can check to see what package (if any) owns it by doing:

(qfile is part of portage-utils)

2. Figure out how to get rid of the corrupt inode. Probably just delete the file.

3. Check the filesystem for bad blocks:

4. Restore the file if possible (e.g., if it was part of a package, re-emerge the package).

It’s very interesting because quite a while ago my system was shutdown uncleanly (through a fault of my own) and after that fsck reported two lost files; one of which had the very contents of an OpenGL header file.

There’s also this:

So basically my filesystem is slightly messed up in a way fsck can’t detect.

I did rm -rf /usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/pygame/tests /usr/lib64/opengl/global/include and am now re-emerging pygame and eselect-opengl.
edit: rm -rf /usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/pygame failed with I/O error because the inode appears to be gone already, yet is still listed in the directory listing. I think. I wouldn’t know how to proceed. Re-emerge of pygame showed the same errors during the ‘unmerging already installed instance’ part.

Should I reformat/reinstall (it’s not that big of a hassle to me) just to be safe?

Edit2: scratch the above, e2fsck found & repaired the deleted inodes and pygame managed to re-emerge cleanly. So my problems appear to have been solved.

Thanks BoneKracker!

That sucks. If it were me, yeah, that’s probably what I’d do.

Also before installing, I would do some low-level disk maintenance.

Yep, it’s a shame. I’m building a stage4 from the (awesome) Gentoo live dvd as we speak though

What do you mean by low-level disk maintenance? Just this?:

Код:
badblocks -w -o

/badblocks /dev/sda3
mkfs.ext4 -l

/badblocks -j -L Gentoo -O extent /dev/sda3

Or do you mean to reinitialize the partition table? (as my IT guy told me to when I experienced random «disk errors» after I had switched from 32 bit Windows 7 to 64 bit)

Note: after my IT guy told me to wipe the partition table I did a low level format using the official tool from my drive manufacturer, and it reported no errors (which backed up my IT guy’s story about my drive being «confused» by the switch from 32 bit to 64 bit). So I should not have any bad blocks. Right? (I know you’re (probably) not a HDD guru, but you seem to know your stuff, so I figured I might as well ask)

Well, it looks like my system will live to see another day.

I managed to successfully do the stage4 backup & restore and all seems well (though I did have some random consolekit+dbus failure, which I fixed by re-emerging both those packages).

Thanks, BoneKracker, for your guidance, you’ve taught me a lot over these two days

Yes, I meant checking the disk with tools from the manufacturer, reinitializing the partition table, repartitioning, creating new filesystems, and so on. If the tools from the drive manufacturer are saying the drive is in pristine condition, I would not worry about bad blocks.

You may never know what caused it. Maybe it was a solar flare or a manifestation of the coming Galactic Alignment of 2012. You might want to make a point of backing up important data if you were not already doing so.
