I am trying to update my VS Code but am getting an error message: Updates may fail due to anti virus software and/or runaway processes.

A log file stemming from my Users was attached, but I am not sure what to check for. I am still new to computers and programming.

I copied the Code.exe file from where my program was installed and pasted it to the temp map: C:UsersYOUR_USERNAMEAppDataLocalProgramsMicrosoft VS Code
I reran the update and it works.

Run the update setup file, with a name like «CodeSetup-stable-…exe», in the following location:

C:Users<:User>AppDataLocalTempvscode-update-system-x64

Replace <:User> with your username. And make sure VS Code is closed.

The same problem happened to me as well. It was because I installed VS Code in another directory other than the default location. The problem happened because after downloading the update in the Temp directory, VS Code tried to locate the previous installation in the default location to update it. As it failed, the update setup file remained with the temporary files. The problem was solved by manually installing the update.

This is how I resolved the problem:

  1. Close VSCode.
  2. Run VSCode AS ADMINISTRATOR by right clicking in the VS Code icon. This process opens VScode.
  3. Now run the same VSCODE update as usual from inside VSCode.
  4. VSCode closes after the update process and the latest VSCODE version is installed.

This happens because you installed VSCode in a specific directory, delete and download again but leave the default directory. This is because the update file looks for the default directory

This problem appeared to me because I moved the files of the setup of the vscode from Partition to another, and the solution was very simple. I opened the file that was in the path that appeared in the alert, and the problem was solved.

Just make sure any instance vscode was closed!

I am trying update my VS code but when I click on update it is showing an error stating «Updates may fail due to ant-virus software and/or runaway processes. Please try restarting your machine before attempting to update again. Please read the log file for more information:» and it has a log file extension which I’m unable to find and I tried restarting and then updating, but still didn’t work. So please guide me as to what I should in order to update the VS code. I have an antivirus, is that causing a stoppage to the update of the IDE VS Code.

This is certainly caused by your antivirus not liking the VS Code installation.
One known example of such an antivirus is SentinelOne.

You would need to disable the antivirus while you are installing VS code,
but there is no guarantee that it will not later on decide to remove some file
of VS Code.

If you are not obliged to use this antivirus, perhaps you should change to
another one. For example, if you are on Windows, then Windows Defender is
pretty good, and it will never conflict with VS Code.

it certainly has nothing to do with process or antivirus, I will bring a solution that works both on insiders and on standard Vscode
Copy Code.exe(vscode) or insiders.exe(if you use insiders)
After copying paste into: «C:UsersYOUR_USERNAMEAppDataLocalProgramsMicrosoft VS Code»
If you have trouble finding it, try looking at C:UsersYOUR_USERNAMEAppDataLocalProgramsMicrosoft VS Code In a folder named «_», After this process just restart your Vscode,

    This product did not download successfully.

    If you search for kb3110221 you will find a link to  KB 3110221: Servicing Update to Visual Studio..

    On that page there is a working download link and a link to  Visual Studio 2015 Update 1 servicing update, which explains

    This servicing update provides fixes to Visual Studio 2015 that address four high-impact bugs that were either found by the product team or reported from the community. This update can be installed only on machines that have Visual Studio 2015 Update
    1 applied. All four fixes are included in the one update installer and can’t be consumed individually. The fixes that are provided in this update will also be released in the next Visual Studio 2015 update.

    This update is available for manual download and installation from the Microsoft Download Center.

  • При каждом запуске Visual Studio Code у меня справа внизу всплывает окошко что нужно установить обновление.

    В консоли Visual Studio Code запускается следующая команда.
    powershell.exe -NoLogo -NoProfile -Command ‘Install-Module -Name PackageManagement -Force -MinimumVersion 1.4.6 -Scope CurrentUser -AllowClobber’

    Но она не может выполнится — пишет ошибки.
    WARNING: Unable to resolve package source ‘https://www.powershellgallery.com/api/v2’.
    PackageManagementInstall-Package : Совпадения для указанных условий поиска и имени пакета «PackageManagement» не найдены.

    Чтобы просмотреть все доступные зарегистрированные источники пакетов, используйте командлет Get-PSRepository.

  • В общем вроде как нашел решение.

    У меня была windows LTSB какаято 2016-го года.

    Обноивил ее до LTSC какойто версии 2019 года.

    После этого комманда установки PackageManagemen выполнилась без ошибок. И проблема решилась.
