Page 1 of 2 - Error: F4SE not installed (But it is!) - posted in Fallout 4 Mod Troubleshooting: So as the title says, I keep getting Error: F4SE not installed errors in game in a popup. I know something is wrong, but for all intents and purposes, I have installed F4SE. I launch with it. I have gone back through the steps 5 times now.   Yet in game, certain functions arent working. LooksMenu preset is grayed out. The Morphs are the same. What the heck is going on? I am really lost...

So as the title says, I keep getting «Error: F4SE not installed» errors in game in a popup. I know something is wrong, but for all intents and purposes, I have installed F4SE. I launch with it. I have gone back through the steps 5 times now.

Yet in game, certain functions aren’t working. LooksMenu preset is «grayed» out. The Morphs are the same. What the heck is going on? I am really lost and could use another pair of eyes. Or another non fried mind. Thanks!

You have to run the game via the f4se_loader.exe. Don’t just run your game. The mods won’t work right without it.

Hi all

I’m getting the same problem, even though the F4SE is installed (and its registering on the start up screen), I still get the error message on a new game stating that it’s not installed. I have all the mods and counter mods that are needed, and the bloody thing is installed, but the game is not registering that it’s installed, so none of my animations will work — sometimes the menu for them won’t work either. 

I read in another post a long winded process of trying to get it to work — as follows:

delete the scripts folder in the games data folder , delete falou4prefs.ini and fallout4.ini in your docs folder.

open fallout4.custom.ini 

it should have this in it

delete f4se_loader.exe , f4se_steam_loader.dll , f4se_1_10_64.dll from the games main folder

if there are any other previous versions of these delete them too . check the games data folder and make sure you didnt add those to it there

disable steam cloud .

if you added anything to the games launcher options remove that too

then verify the games integrity 

steam >library

rt click fo4 then select properties

select local files

then verify the games cash 

disable all mods in nmm (uncheck in nmm «plugins») not the games esm or the dlc

just the mods

start a new game with the regular launcher , let when the game sets the options check the resolution make sure it’s the same as your monitor , 

make a save after the mirror

exit game

verify that the .ini’s are not read only

verify that custom.ini has 

[Display]

iLocation x=0

iLocation y=0

[Archive]

bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

sResourceDataDirsFinal=

[Launcher]

bEnableFileSelection=1

re-download f4se from silverlock 

extract the .dll’s and the .exe to the games main folder (NOT the data folder)

when they are in the games folder rt click f4se_loader.exe and select run as admin

open the data folder , verify you have a f4se folder in it , and in the f4se folder verify that ther is a plugins folder 

if it all looks good start the game again with the regular launcher run your new save for a min .

exit game 

now f4se knows what to hook into , 

launch the game with f4se_loader.exe

Your F4SE version must match your version of Fallout 4, then you must make sure you download mods that also match the correct version of F4SE.

Thank you Undeadbob666 — Update:

I have re downloaded all mods and their dependants, made sure they were compatible with my version of FO4 — 1.10.114 — then changed the load order for the animation to be under AFF, and the results are:

i have the menus but no animation

still have the error message come up

when I select a animation from the list the camera pulls back from first person view, but nothing happens

Will fiddle with the load order and see what happens.

Well sorry I figured that would help your case, and was also hoping someone more knowledgeable would come along (they typically do when I comment lol). You’ll have to try deactivating all your mods and activating one at a time until you find the culprit perhaps? Sorry wish I could give an easy solution, but oft times using mods is like wrestling a drunken hobbit in a wet potato sack.

Hi all

I realize this topic is a year old but I ran into the same problem today. I followed your directions and it actually worked. So I saved game shut down to come here and thank you, but a friend came over so I chatted for a bit and reloaded the game, and the MCM is missing again. FML

I have been modding since before the Oblivion days and I have run into a lot of weird problems, but this is a unique one, never ran into this before.

I must have installed MCM 20 times now , both manually and through NMM.

It was there for 30 seconds though.

Note for anyone having this problem in the future (this thread is the top result on Google) — I managed to fix mine by realising that I was incompetent, lol.

When reading the Notepad installation file I missed «Copy the Data folder over too». Make sure you have the .DLL files and the F4SE loader in your Fo4 installation folder, but MAKE SURE YOU COPY THE DATA FOLDER TOO!

Thank you that actually fixed the problem for me, was having the same issue, deleted all references to F4se deleted the ini’s and disabled all mods and verified.

The Fallout 4 Script Extender which is also known as “F4SE” or “FOSE” is a community developed modder’s resource that extends the Scripting capabilities of the game. However, quite recently a lot of reports have been coming in of the F4SE not working. The application is reported to crash while trying to launch or show a black screen for an extended period of time before crashing.

What Causes the F4SE to Stop Working?

We investigated the matter after receiving information about the error and came up with a set of solutions that you can implement in order to get rid of this problem. Also, we looked into the causes of the problem which were triggering the issue and some of the most common ones are listed below.

  • Updates: Developers mostly don’t support third-party modding facilities for their games and therefore try to prevent those in every update of the game. It is possible that the Creation Club updated and is now preventing you from using the F4SE application. Therefore, it is recommended to update the F4SE application.
  • Conflicting Mods: Another possibility is that the mods that you have installed might be conflicting with the F4SE complication due to them being outdated or malfunctioning. Also, if the versions of the mods and the F4SE application coincide it can cause issues with the application.
  • Compatibility: Sometimes, the application might be facing issues with your operating system, therefore, it is always a good idea to run the compatibility troubleshooter for the application and let it select the best settings for you.
  • Plugins: The plugins used by the application might be corrupted or outdated and thus causing the issue. These are automatically replaced by the application if they are deleted.
  • Missing Files: It is possible that certain important files might be missing from the game and thus causing the issue with the launch. The game needs all of its files to be present in order for all of its elements to function correctly.

Solution 1: Updating the F4SE application.

Developers mostly don’t support third-party modding facilities for their games and therefore try to prevent those in every update of the game. It is possible that the Creation Club updated and is now preventing you from using the F4SE application. Therefore, it is recommended to update the F4SE application. For that:

  1. Download the Latest Version of F4SE from here.
  2. Extract the “f4se_1_10_120.dll(the numbers can differentiate depending on versions)”, ”f4se_loader.exe” and the “f4se_steam_loader.dll” to the fallout installation folder.
    Extract these files to the installation folder.

    The default file path is usually:

    C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteamAppscommonFallout 4
  3. Launch the Game by running the “f4se_loader.exe” that you just copied inside the folder.

Note: Replace any Files when asked while copying.

Solution 2: Disabling Conflicting Mods.

Another possibility is that the mods that you have installed might be conflicting with the F4SE complication due to them being outdated or malfunctioning. Also, if the versions of the mods and the F4SE application coincide it can cause issues with the application. Therefore in this step, we are going to disable any conflicting mods.

  1. Open the Nexus Mod Manager.
  2. Right-click on a Mod that is not supported by NMM and is applied through the F4SE.
  3. Disable the mods one by one and try to run the game after disabling each one.

  5. Try to update the Mod and check to see if the problem persists.
  6. If the Mod still causes issues, disable it until the issue is fixed by the Mod developers.

The plugins used by the application might be corrupted or outdated and thus causing the issue. These are automatically replaced by the application if they are deleted. Therefore in this step, we are going to be deleting these plugins which will later be automatically replaced.

  1. Open the Fallout 4 Installation folder it is usually located in 
    C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteamAppscommonFallout 4
  2. Open the “Data>F4SE>Plugins” Folders.
  3. Delete everything inside the Plugins folder.

  5. Make sure to also reinstall all the fallout 4 script extender Mods.
  6. Run the game and check to see if the problem persists.

Solution 4: Run Compatibility Troubleshooter.

Sometimes, the application might be facing issues with your operating system, therefore, it is always a good idea to run the compatibility troubleshooter for the application and let it select the best settings for you. For that:

  1. Navigate to the game installation folder.
  2. Right-Click on the “f4se_loader.exe” and click on the settings.
  3. Click on the “Compatibility” tab.
  4. Select the “Run Compatibility Troubleshooter” button.
  5. Windows will now automatically determine the best settings for your computer.
  6. Test those settings and apply if the issue is solved.

In some cases, it is possible that the game might be missing important files that are necessary in order for the game to run properly. Therefore, in this step, we are going to be verifying the game files. For that:

  1. Open the Steam application and login to your account.
  2. Navigate to the Library and Right–Click on Fallout 4.
  3. Select Properties.
