FSSound.dll»

[OldModules]
FSSound.dll=1

ApDataMicrosoftFS9FS9.cfg
[OldModules]
FSSound.dll=1

DEMO=0
LOADSIM=1
LOADWINDOW=1
SHOW_OPENING_SCREEN=1
STARTUP_DEMO=
[OldModules]
FSSound.dll=1

Microsoft Dynamic-link library
regsvr32 fssound.dll
Regsvr32 [/u] [/n] [/i[:cmdline]] fssound.dll

At some point FS9.1 began complaining tha tFSSound.dll might not be compatible and offered the choice of loading or not. Loading it causes no problem. I’ve seen this discussed on other forums, where the consesnsus is that it isn’t a real problem, but no one knows what the cause is.
I was wondering if anyone here knows the cause and if there is a solution. It is a nuisance if I start FS and am distracted. Five minutes later its still sitting at that damned dialogue box witing for me to click OK.
I suppose some dufus addon added/modified/replaced/stomped on the file, but don’t know which one is the culprit.

When you load an aircraft you might be installing (overwriting) an older version of it than you need for other aircraft.
This happens often with self installing aircraft (exe.).
That’s my take on that nuisance message.

Crash, have you tried this
Find fs9.cfg & open it in Notepad. Add this entry (it doesn’t really matter where providing it’s a new entry) & exit Notepad saving changes.
[OLDMODULES]
fssound.dll=1
I think the cause comes down to the arthur using a 2002 that has been upgraded for us with FS9 but uses 2002 gauges and sounds. Others will correct me if im wrong (must fo the time)

AJWatson try this
1} Double click My Computer
2} Double click Hard Drive
3} Double Click Documents & Settings
4} Double Click Your User Name
5} At this stage you will need to acces the hidden folders. Go to Tools at the top of the task bar, then Folder options, click on view, in the advance section you should see a tick box called show hidden files & folders tick this and click apply & OK. All hidden folders will come to light.
6} Double click on Application Data
7} Double click Microsoft
8} Double click FS9
9} The FS9 CFG file should be the third one down on the left (well it is on mine)
Open it up with wordpad on copy and paste the added section in my previous versoin.
Let us know how you got on.

Here is my fix. I went into …program files…FS9modules and renamed it to fssound.dll.bak. FS started up with no complaint.
If I find a plane that has no sound now, I will know the culprit. If it can’t be aliased to an FS9 sound file, I’ll get rid of it.
This is the info I have on the dll.

Final fix. Went to and downloaded version 1.6.0.15 beta2 and got no complaint from FS. FS does not like 1.5.0.2 or prior. I don’t like beta software, but apparently some gauge designers are using it and FS doesn’t complain, so I’ll give it a try unless green slime starts coming out of my speakers.
As the last update was over a year ago, I won’t hold my breath till 1.6.x final comes out.

Top man it got rid of .dll box at start up but have lost a few sounds for a/c. Only tried a couple but I’m sure I had sounds for them before.

Hi,Anyone any idea why I periodically get an error message (by no means every time) when I start FS9 telling me that the module FSSound.dll will cannot be loaded and will be disabled? I already have this in the fs9.cfg file:[OLDMODULES]FSSound.dll=1Are there any other reasons why FS wouldn’t want to load the file? Odd too that 90% of the time I don’t get the error message…Martin

That is indeed intreresting. I have Windows 7 myself and, after the configuration file was altered, have never seen the messsage again. I don’t suppose there is any chance that an old copy of the config is being read? That’s doubtful, but you never know with Windows.

Hello,Try this ……(note the difference with OLDMODULES )[OldModules]FSSound.dll=1

That’s cause … all panels (or planes .. not sure) are not using this particular DLL !Regards.Gus.

A search only finds one cfg file, but I also found that, although if I close FS9 («FS(» .. sic) and start it up again I get the same error message, if I reboot the PC, it has gone (using same a/c as before). That would suggest the cause is something else entirely. Curiouser and curiouser …M.

Might be worth checking to see where you have file installed -It should be in this location: Flight Simulator 9ModulesMine is dated 7/23/2002 and is 11 KB in size.It is always possible that some addon has replaced your original copy of the file with one which is problematic.

Mine is V1.6.0.15 (modified 18 June 2004) an is fully compatible with FS9 (doesn’t require OldModules). But I still can’t figure out how to attach a small .zip file to a forum post in this new forum-style. Otherwise I would have.Rob

Hi,I have exactly the same version as you Rob — just one copy (I searched), in the Modules folder. I didn’t know that this later version doesn’t requite the OldModules paragraph in the fs9.cfg. How do you know that? Not getting the error message at the moment (having typed that, I WILL next time I start up FS9 — you know how it goes!) but it does pop up every few weeks.Martin

Because it works without warnings, after removing the OLDMODULES section from the fs9.cfg file Rob

I will ask the obvious question Rob — where can I get a copy of this later version of FSSound.dll ???? I do not believe they allow zip files attachments here any more but presume there must be a source for the file elsewhere. EDIT — Nevermind — Google was my friend and I found it. However FS is still requiring the entry in the oldmodules section of my FS9.cfg file.

Hi All:I ran across 1 or 2 FS9 add-ons that were arbitrarily hard coded to look for FSSound.dll in the root main folder of FS2004 rather than in the usual [FS install path]Modules folder. When I have ine of those add-ons «active» in FS scenery library, I must have FSSound.dll in the root main folder of FS2004 when I load a flight within the scenery area covered by that add-on, or FS crashes (…even though I otherwise also have FSSound.dll in the «usual» [FS install path]Modules folder) !FYI: These are some example entries I always keep at the very top of my FS9.Cfg (and FSX.Cfg) files just in case an add-on installs/uses them:[OLDMODULES]FSSound.dll=1SOARRec.dll=1GaugeSound.dll=1Martin:Perhaps you could try this with an «extra» copy of FSSound.dll in the root main folder of FS2004 in addition to the one in the ‘usual’ [FS install path]Modules folder. Hope this helps !

Hi David,That’s strange …It’s hard to prove long-distance that I don’t use the Oldmodules section anymore , but you have to trust me on that. And at least 10 gauges that use FSSOund (o.a. in the ProjectFokker F70/100).So I don’t have a clue why it won’t work for you…Best, Rob

Hi Rob — I can’t «prove» it via long distance either, but I assure you that without the entry under [OldModules] in my FS9.cfg file I get the usual error message when I start FS2004.I am using the later version as you suggested. No big deal of course, but I did try removing the FSSound.dll=1 entry and up pops the error message when starting FS.Chalk it up to another one of those «Great Mysteries of Life».

Gary, what you say about some software looking for the dll file in the main FS9 folder would explain why I only get the error message on occasion — although it wouldn’t explain why, when I load the same flight with the same a/c after rebooting tyhe PC, the message no longer appears (at least that seemed to be the case last time). Any idea what software might be included here?I haven’t had the error again since I originally posted but next time will try adding a copy of FSSound.dll to the main FS9 folder. By the way, I don’t have an entry in the fs9.cfg file for GaugeSound.dll=1 — never had a problem with that file. My cfg entry is:[OLDMODULES]FSSound.dll=1msxml4.dll=1msxml4a.dll=1msxml4r.dll=1I don’t remember why I added the msxml files — must have been an instruction is some software installation in the dim distant past..Martin

Some aircraft install their gauge files in a gauges subfolder of their
own folder, eg: fs9aircraftnamegauges instead of the fs9gauges
folder then refer to it in their panel.cfg, did you check this?
Also make sure you did not by mistake unzip a gauge.cab file…

Hi Cris,
I have that file downloaded and installed, and have encountered no
problems with it. With my installation, I kept three aircraft: the
emb-135rl, emb-145er, and emb-145xr, with the two emb-145 aircraft
having their sound and panels aliased to the emb-135.
When installing, I extracted all files to a temp folder. Then I placed
the gauges into the emb-135 panel folder, rather than into the
fs9/gauges folder. My emb-135lr panel folder only has two gauge files:
erj.gau and fpda_gear_wind.gau. There should be NO sub folders in the
panel folder.
The following is from the included installation document:
ERJ 135/145 — Full Package — USA Fleet freeware upload (09/20/04)
Reported Problem / Complaint:
— FS2004 program crash when program attempts to load the ERJ gauges
— Unable to see ERJ panel gauges
— FS2004 incompatible with ERJ gauges
Cause:
The Grabowski panel is a FS2000/2002 panel application updated for
FS2004. In order for the Grabowski panel and gauge package to operate
in FS2004, the module «fssound.dll» must be installed in the
FS2004/Modules folder. The «fssound.dll» module must also be
configured in the fs9.cfg file.
This problem is common with almost all 3rd-party pre-FS2002 panel
applications in which sounds were incorporated into GAU files and is
not a panel/gauge defect. The FS2004 program crashes because it is
unable to load the sounds associated with the ERJ gauges and because
the «fssound.dll» is not present.
Solution: (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Verify ERJ Panel gauges exist in the proper file location
Open the «FS2004/Gauges» folder and verify that the following GAU
files exist inside the folder:
— erj.gau 7,684KB
— fpda_gear_wind.gau 9KB
If the above gauge files do exist in the «FS2004/Gauges» folder,
skip down to Step 3.
If the above gauge files do not exist in the «FS2004/Gauges»
folder, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Reinstall the ERJ gauges in the proper file location
Unzip the «ERJ 135/145 — Full Package — USA Fleet» download
again. Find the «erj.gau» and «fpda_gear_wind.gau» files and
reinstall them into your «FS2004/Gauges» folder. Refer to the
Installation Readme for additional help.
Step 3: Installation of the fssound.dll
Unzip the attached file «FSSoundEndUser». Install the
«fssound.dll» into your «FS2004/Modules» folder.
Step 4: Find & Modify the FS9.cfg file
* It is strongly recommended you make a copy of the «fs9.cfg» file
before you make any modifications*
Open your FS2004 (or Flight Simulator 9) folder. Look for a CFG file
called «fs9.cfg». It may be easier to find this file if you
right-click the mouse and «arrange icons by Type». If you find the
«fs9.cfg» file in your FS2004 folder, open it with MS Wordpad and
search for the following command line:
[OldModules]
Add the following command line after [OldModules] so that it now
appears like this:
[OldModules]
fssound.dll=1
If the [OldModules] parameter doesn’t exist in your «fs9.cfg»
file, add it.
Save and Exit. Procedure is complete. The ERJ panel should now
operate properly.
Hope this helps.

[OldModules]
fssound.dll=1
If the [OldModules] parameter doesn’t exist in your «fs9.cfg»
file, add it.
Save and Exit. Procedure is complete. The ERJ panel should now
operate properly.
Hope this helps.

FSSound.dll problems
FSSound.dll is failing to load in my copy of FS9.1. I have made the usual edits to the FS9.cfg, but still the problem remains. Help me figure this out!

Just to rule out the obvious, does your config entry look like this:
[OldModules]
FSSound.dll=1And is there a functioning copy of the FSSound.dll in your modules folder?
If the answer to both is yes, then I got nothing.

Yes and Yes… hence the reason for the post. It is a little mystifying, isn’t it?

Yes it is, I’m sorry I can’t be of more help. I hope someone else can provide some more insight. I’m always curious to see how these sorts of glitches can be fixed in case I ever suffer the same issue.

I was suffering from the same issue; at one time, I thought I had made the changes to the FS9.cfg file.
When I just checked the .cfg file the lines for the [OLD_MODULES] and the FSSound.dll were missing!
So, I made the changes, saved the file, started the Sim and voila! No more message!
Looks like you did that and you’re still having the problem; I think mine was caused when I updated to 9.1!

Couple of thoughts:
1) Is your FS9.cfg entry typed exactly the same as above (i.e. no spaces etc)?
2) Try replacing the FSSound.dll itself with a fresh copy, maybe your one has been damaged.Hope you get it sorted, it’s an annoying little fault.

Hi,
I was having the same problem and was interested to read through your post, and hadn’t thought anything about the cfg as it had always been there, but when I finally looked at the FS9 cfg, that little section had disappeared ! Weird.
At first I typed that little bit using all CAPITALS as shown in viperflyers post, but that didn’t work for me and I did it using upper and lowercase as shown in pfflyers post.
I made sure the little section was posted at the end of a segment, somewhere in the middle of the cfg, although I don’t suppose that means anything. It seems to work now and so good luck with yours.Andy

I’m not sure what was up, really, but I’ve got it working now. I had to try various versions of fssound.dll, though. I downloaded three different ones from FS sites — and one from a dll site! They weighed in at variously 5 kbs, 11 kbs, 15 kbs, and 255 kbs… I tried them all. I’m curious as to know why the 11 Kbs version didn’t work for me. That’s the version I used in my last install of FS — and what I used in this install up until this week — but even replacing that with a newly downloaded copy didn’t fix the problem. I ended up using the 5 Kbs version…

This happened with another user here a few months ago. Somehow the FSSound.dll file got corrupted. Replacing the file fixed the issue.

mines gone too
I checked my FS9 cfg file and there are no lines that says «old modules FFsound dll» or even just sound dll.
I do have a ‘sound dll in the FS9 main folder and also one in my modules folder ,that one may be part of FSUIPC .
I copied the line ‘Old modules FFsound dll» from pfflyers post and put it in the FS9 cfg folder but I don’t think that’s a working dll and doesn’t do anything.
I better quit because as the old adage says «if it ain’t broke don’t fix it» and my FS9 install works fine(knock on wood)

I checked the one in my Modules folder, and it carries version number 1.5.0.0 and weighs in at 13.0 KB. The dll that sits in the main folder in most installs is GaugeSound.dll, which does not require an entry in the cfg file.

Hi,
The cfg is quirky! The GaugeSound.dll which has happily lived wherever it does until a few weeks ago when it started showing up as a box you have to click to get FS to start. I just added it to the oldModules section and now my FS9 starts without any pop-ups. I hope I haven’t spoken too soon.

checked my modules folder
I looked at the sound dll in my modules folder and it says it’s version 9.10 40901 and is 72GB.I still think it’s part of FSUIPC ,I don’t understand why my FS9 install runs fine ,all sliders maxed and no stuttering.
I have had that error message come up in the past ,and put the gauge Sound file dll in the main fs9 folder and that fixed it.
I’ll never understand computer’s.
