Game error 201 lotro как исправить

getting this error:

Game Error [201]
Can’t open the data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to write to them. The program will now exit. [201]

I have seen that this error has appeared before (both in lotro and ddo), but there does not seem to be a specific solution?

Win XP, sp3.
game was functioning perfectly right up to server shut down for ROI install.
had the usual red x issue on trying to connect for update. once I got past that, everything seemed to update fine.
I have tried copying backup folder to game folder, re-update and same result. 3 times.

Got the same thing. Wish there was an error log to tell you what file(s) are involved. One odd thing. client_sound_aux.dat is there and has today’s date as last modified but there still are several client_sound_aux_2.datx files. I have confirmed permissions. X64 XP.

I compared a working client to this one and found that «client_anim.dat» is missing.

ah, ty for that hint, I looked at the log, and it had difficulties with client_xxxxxxx.datx . I took the 2 .datx files I was showing in «C:Program FilesTurbineThe Lord of the Rings Online» and put them in another folder (in case they are needed — kept them safe).

restarted game, it redownloaded about 172 files and now I can play.

Thanks so much for your post. I had the same problem and did exactly what you did. The game continued to patch
(only I had 2000+files) and I was able to play. Thanks so much because I would have NEVER been able to figure it out.

I gave up and re-installed. There must be a file or reg. entry that tells the invoker that the game is patched because it doesn’t seem to check the .dat files before it tries to load them.

Game error 201 cant open the data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to use them. The program will now exit 201

Error 201 has a few possible causes, this error is basically the launcher saying «I cannot find, access or use my dat (data) files!».

When it occurs it is usually one of two things, either the game client (Lotroclient.exe) is not being allowed permissions to access them or the files themselves are corrupted or missing usually due to file copy errors during installation but can also be due to corruption that occurs during patching because of file read/write errors on the system.

-Regarding the permissions based cause-

-You need to be running as Administrator on your system.

Even if you log into an Admin account, there can be issues regarding permissions/registry settings pertaining to the user account, to test Windows XP users should see this post here about creating a new XP «Computer Administrator» account (at the bottom under «Operating System Specific Issues») and log off of their current Windows user account and log into the new one to test running there.
Windows Vista and 7 users need to make sure they have User Account Control or «UAC» enabled (even if on an Admin account) because the game is run via «TurbineInvoker.exe» on Vista/7 and that file interacts with UAC to get you the correct admin permissions (it self-elevates) and if UAC is not on it cannot do this.
Both systems need to not be running any of the three game files (Turbinelauncher.exe Turbineinvoker.exe or Lotroclient.exe) under any kind of «Compatibility mode» or «Run as Admin» option.
Less common but just in case also make sure the «Turbine» folder in «C:Program Files» and its subfolders/files are not in «read only» mode by right-clicking Turbine and choosing Properties (note: 64bit users should do this for the Turbine folder in «Program Files (x86)» instead)

-Regarding the installing or corruption based cause-

When you are installing the game and you receive errors copying files (Client_HighRes.dat Client_Sound.dat or Client_Surface.dat) and the «ignore» option is chosen you will later receive 201 errors launching the game.

The reason this occurs is because the installation installed corrupted or partial versions of these files. Look in «C:Program FilesTurbineThe Lord of the Rings Online» and if you sort by file «type» you should find these files below listed.

The file sizes I’ve put down will vary depending on the hard-drive they’re on and the version of Windows reporting it, but yours should be roughly these sizes, (Windows defaults usually to showing file size in KB so the number on the right is the kilobyte size again approximate)

441 MB client_anim.dat 441,000K
288 MB client_cell_1.dat 288,000K
090 MB client_cell_2.dat 90,000K
295 MB client_gamelogic.dat 295,000K
265 MB client_general.dat 265,000K

If yours vary from that by a large amount most likely they are corrupted versions. Now if you received the errors during the installation of the game which is the biggest cause of this, that is usually because those three files that I’ve highlighted above were not copied correctly during the installation.

It doesn’t explain why the file went missing in first place or why the launcher doesn’t detect the missing file(s) and tries to load anyway. How does a system that had the proper permissions for the last patch not have them for this patch? The fact that it had permissions to do most of the patching should bare this out. It should be able to tell the difference between a missing file and the system denying access. I think it’s just a poorly worded error message. Like the «Server full» error. The launcher must be relying on a note left behind by the patcher saying the game is up to date and ready to run. I wonder if there is a way to reset the patcher so that if a file is missing or corrupt it can be replaced without a complete install.

yeah I was originally looking for a «force verify» option on the launcher. There isn’t one that I could find.

Well so much for re-installing. Yet another 201 error. There is a repair option if you have the whole install plant. But it doesn’t repair. It over writes the install and re-patches. Yet another poorly written dialog. None of the fixes stand the test of logic. How can a hash error come and go on the same file? How can the patcher miss a file? Why can’t it tell the difference between permission denial and a missing file? How can I download patches for SoildWorks, AutoCad and GibbsCam and never have a problem. So it’s not the bandwidth, anti-virus, spybot, drivers, permissions, netnanny, clean boot or any of the other voodoo they suggest. Why would a complete new install with the latest installer even need to patch in the 1st place? They should have re-imaged it with the ROI update. So i’m out of ideas.

This has got to be costing them big time on bandwidth to have clients download the same 10GB+ of data over and over again.

And the biggest mystery of all — why does the download and install work flawlessly for so many people and cause some such trouble? Is it connection related (bad hop), hardware related, proxy or firewall related? It is a mystery.

I was also getting that 201 error and after many hours of frustration I finally found a solution!!! It is a bit of an unorthodox solution (cause it requires a second pc or lap top) but at least it is a solution.

I downloaded the installation from the lotro site to another pc then I installed the game. I opened the Turbine folder on program files and then the lord of the rings folder. I copied all the extention .DAT files then pasted them to a flash drive (make sure your flash drive has a lot of space cause those dat files are quite big). Then I opened the lord of the rings folder on the pc I was getting the 201 error. I copied and pasted the Dat files on the lord of the rings folder. And boom game runs and no 201 error this time.

So I was wondering why turbine hasn’t come up with a solution of a download. They could have made a download available on the site including the .dat files, available to those that get the 201 error.

Apparently there are lots of people getting this error, we are just the few that dare to tackle it, there is even a utube video for it ;-). Most of them that get it are potential new costumers for turbine that want to try the game for free. So imagine how many players they loose from this instead they could have come up with an easy fix.

Pando is supposed to download and verify content. But it’s verification system simply doesn’t work. It passes off corrupt files as good, misses some files completely and doesn’t clean up after its self. All along telling the patcher that everything is fine. Pando basically doesn’t do what it was designed to do.

I knew a guy that quit because of it and the sad part is he paid for Moira and never saw it.

So where do I get a disk? After 3 attempts to download and 3 failures to get a complete copy, I am wondering :WTH is the problem over there? I download and run large file games ALL THE TIME with little or no issue. After days of downloading and hours of my time wasted, I still have no game. I have friends that play, and they have asked me to give this game another chance. I agreed to try again (I played for a bit last year), but I didn’t sign up to troubleshoot your broken patch server.

Yes, I know plenty of people have no trouble. I didn’t last year. Clearly lots of people are having issues now. I found dozens of posts about this same error (201) and people are clearly frustrated.

CONCLUSION: I will play your game, pay for a subscription and maybe even buy upgrades…. the day you send me a free game disk that works the first time, along with an apology note explaining how you sent a Goon-Squad over to Pandio and made them FIX THEIR BROKEN VERIFICATION ENGINE!! Color glossies showing goon squad roughing up pandio employees would also help.

simplest reason is theyre updated constantly and for the same reason turbine nolonger give out standaonline patches.. people get confused as to which files they should be using most dont even read or check what theyre downloading and installing

lotro works fine on w7 without needing to use compatability mode in mose cases if your intall of w7 has s1p and is patched AND as long as youve installed dotnet framework 1.1 and dotnet framework 1.1 sp1.

if your having problems downloading from the pando sources, then the source your using is faulty and iirc the worst download is from the signup link try using steam to download and install lotro. steam is usualy more reliable and is a lot faster than downloading via pandohh

i just downloaded the launcher and after 12 days with slow internet to down load it, I get

I can’t tell you how to fix it, but what it is is, is that some (or all, knowing Turbine) of your DAT files are damaged/missing/corrupt. How this could be after freshly patching, I don’t know, and I’m having the same issue. I was planning on reinstalling today, firing the game up, and either purchasing points or resubbing. WB/Turbine are now without my cash, because this is the last straw on a very burdened camel’s back. I may come back to the game down the road, but I am not paying for a patching system that fails on a clean install.

is an old post but can anyone help me understand what this guy means by having «difficulties with client_xxxxxxx.dat»? I’m not tech savvy so here’s my log if anyone knows if moving any of these files out and redownloading them will help me out. Obviously there’s something wrong with the last few lines but not sure if anything else in here indicates anything wrong. Still waiting for support to get back to me.
