How to fix GDBus Error org freedesktop PolicyKit1 Error Failed

Background:

I use gdm3+XFCE on my box (amd64, Kali Linux). When I start my XFCE session, I have been getting this error message

Even starting a new XFCE session will not help. So far, it looks that this error message has no consequences, but it is annoying. I found a way to fix this, sharing for interested readers.

I’m not sure what conflict Policy-kit is complaining about.

What I would try is after booting up the machine,
«shutdown gdm3» and then «start xfce» manually.
Double checking if Policy-kit still complains.

The following is how I would do the steps above:
At the gdm3 login screen

Thanks a lot!
Unfortunately, both your procedure and logging in as a new user do not help.
It is not a big deal right now, but I am concerned I may have some troubles in the future.
I have no idea about how to troubleshoot this, so any help is appreciated.

its a new one on me too so if you’re patient with me guessing a lot I try to help OK

Describe where this error shows up? Like in a popup message on the xfce desktop?

Also do you have contrib and non-free enabled in your sources.list?

Are you running a full xfce Desktop? ie: all/most of the xfce packages?

Hello,
I reinstalled those packages, removed a similar policy package for LXDE and saved a new XFCE session.
So far the annoying popup has disappeared and problem solved! Will post again in case it should reappear.
Thanks!

sudo reboot

Re: GDBus Error [Solved]

I added wheezy-backports then installed the MATE desktop from it.

At each login, I see the same error:

I ran this text verbatim, through some search engines and in addition to a Red Hat bug report (on LXDE, marked WONTFIX), it indicated there may be more than one PolicyKit installed. One solution that claimed to have worked, was to uncheck the LXDE PolicyKit box in the MATE Desktop Session Settings. I did this, and the error continued to appear. There is a separate PolicyKit for MATE under the desktop session settings and tried that with both the MATE PolicyKit checked and unchecked. Again, the error continued to appear.

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed

I’ve just updated, and after the update when I tried to access folders in my GUI file manager (nautilus) with root access (by adding admin:// to the front of the path), I get GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: Unix process subject does not have uid set
I tried to search online, it seems that this message isn’t something that has really occurred that often to anyone at all. I’m at a loss. I loaded a snapshot I made 2 weeks ago and it is fine, then I updated again and then it broke again. It must be something that happens during the update that breaks that access. Anyone have similar problems?

Re: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed

I’m also seeing the same thing. I’ve reporting as a bug so it can be tracked (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/70108), then I might try digging through the gvfs repo.

Reverting just that one commit reverts the behaviour (below). However, there could be some other issue that’s preventing this change from working as expected.

Re: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed

Also having this issue. I noticed if I do upgrade the gvfs* packages to 1.48.0-2, I get an «Unable to handle admin: locations» error. Then after downgrading to the 2 cached versions(1.46.2-1 and 1.48.0-1), I get this same GDBus.Error. I’m curious. What other packages could’ve caused this change since it seems to happen with gvfs updated or not? I could check my log and play whack-a-mole, but unsure if that would even solve it.

EDIT: Apologies, Downgrading to 1.46.2-1 again today seemed to have worked. Unsure what happened with the downgrade yesterday that it didn’t. But user error apparently.

Re: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed

Does anyone know if there’s an open issue somewhere on this? It doesn’t seem clearly proven in this thread that this is upstream. Hmm what to do. I use Xfce and now Thunar won’t even start up because of this error:

I’m not really sure about which RHEL version being used over there. One of our community members RJ has opened such a thread earlier https://access.redhat.com/discussions/3959351. Please check the comments and solutions discussed over there. That may help you as well. Apart from this, I also noticed that there a quit a few bugs related to Polikit being logged. Again, it is may not be related in your case. I’m with the confidence that our community members would certainly notice this and try to provide more strength to this thread, hope so.

Hello Ti Saiful,

Welcome to the Red Hat Discussion forum. Please reread your original post, and evaluate how we can help namely as outsiders. We honestly do not know the background of your system such as what Murthy Sadashiva mentioned above. Please examine this post for posting tips, and provide us more relevant details.

From the limited information I see from your original post, I get the idea you are having issues with the polkit service.

Please run the following commands and provide us either the output or a description of the output.

  • Log in as root prior to doing this. If you are having polkit issues, you will have to be patient as you log in.
  • NOTE: The output should only say «running» if all services are up and running properly
  • If the output is anything OTHER than running then there are problems, and run the following:
  • NOTE: If «polkit» appears from running systemctl | grep fail then you ought to consider the info at this Red Hat solution
  • Original content
  • New content below
  • Reload system

You may have to reboot the system.

The above is a bit of a wild guess for your original post If this does not fit your specific issue, please read this post for posting tips, and provide us more relevant details. If this thing I wrote above does not resolve your issue, then by all means, do open a case with Red Hat.

Fix GVfs Admin “Unix process subject does not have uid set” in Ubuntu 21.10, 21.04

Starting in Ubuntu 21.04, when user trying to open file or path via GVfs admin daemon it outputs an error and refuses to work.

This usually happens when you use “Open as Administrator” or “Edit as Administrator” to open folder or edit file via root. Or when you trying to access another user folder in system, and even using nautilus admin:// , gedit admin:// , or other commands in your script or console.

It usually outputs an error look like this:

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: Unix process subject does not have uid set

The issue is caused by a gvfs commit to fix flatpak app network permission requirement problem. To get rid of the error (see bug), reverting just that one commit could be a workaround.

Method 1: Install old GVfs from Ubuntu 20.10 repository:

You can download & install the gvfs .deb packages for the previous Ubuntu 20.10. And here are the links for 64-bit system:

Grab the 6 packages, then open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to install all of them:

Method 2: upgrade GVfs via PPA (recommend):

Upstream has fixed the issue by releasing GVfs 1.48.1. Ubuntu somehow stuck at v1.47.91 in Ubuntu 21.10 & 21.04.

Besides building from the source, I’ve uploaded it into this PPA to make life easier.

1. Open terminal either by searching from activities overview screen or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

2. Then either upgrade GVfs via “Software Updater” or run the apt command in terminal:

After installing the new packages, Log out and back in to apply change.

How to Restore GVfs to stock version:

If you change mind, and want to revert it back, simply run command in terminal to purge the PPA which will downgrade the installed packages:

That’s all. Enjoy!

Try purging the PPA with the updated command. If you have already removed the PPA, install and open Synaptic package manager. Then search gvfs via the tool, highlight it and go to menu Package -> Force Version.

I ended up removing gvfs via “sudo apt remove gvfs” command and reinstalling gvfs and nautilus. Not sure if I recommend it, but it worked for me.

Из ~/.config/openbox/autostart убрал строчку lxpolkit и весь вопрос исчерпан,
Почему до последнего обновления не было конфликта не знаю.

Recently I upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04 to 21.04, and after the upgrade I could not access one of my Windows NTFS drives. The error message is:

gdbus.error:org.freedesktop.policykit1.error.failed:unix process subject does not have uid set.

Other NTFS drives open, but this one gives an error.

Exact same problem here — couldn’t access the drive via «Files» (Nautilus), with same error message.
It appeared to be mounted, though. So I copied the files I needed via the terminal.
After that the Disk showed up normally, also after unmounting/mounting it.

According to this page https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2021/04/workaround-nautilus-admin-not-working-ubuntu-21-04/,
This usually happens when you use “Open as Administrator” or “Edit as Administrator” to open folder or edit file via root. Or when you trying to access another user folder in system, and even using nautilus admin://, gedit admin://, or other commands in your script or console.

So it offers two options; download & install the gvfs .deb packages for the previous Ubuntu 20.10 or use its own repository with release GVfs 1.48.1 package which corrects the error.

If you change mind, and want to revert it back, simply run command in terminal to purge the PPA which will downgrade the installed packages:

sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gvfs

That’s all. Enjoy!

GDBus Error [Solved]

#1

Post

by larry77 » 2013-01-19 10:32

Dear All,
I use gdm3+XFCE on my box (amd64, debian testing).
Recently, when I start my XFCE session, I have been getting this error message

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject

Even starting a new XFCE session will not help. So far, it looks that this error message has no consequences, but it is annoying….any idea about how to fix it?
Cheers

I’m not sure what conflict Policy-kit is complaining about.

What I would try is after booting up the machine,
«shutdown gdm3» and then «start xfce» manually.
Double checking if Policy-kit still complains.

The following is how I would do the steps above:
At the gdm3 login screen

at the console login screen
login as user then su to root or use sudo for the next command.

exit out of root and start xfce manually

or you could also try adding another user account and see if
you get the same error when logging in as a new user.

Precisely! It is a popup showing up after I login.

Yes again. I have enabled also contrib and non-free and I have pretty much the whole XFCE desktop installed.

Hello,
I reinstalled those packages, removed a similar policy package for LXDE and saved a new XFCE session.
So far the annoying popup has disappeared and problem solved! Will post again in case it should reappear.
Thanks!

I added wheezy-backports then installed the MATE desktop from it.

At each login, I see the same error:

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject

Is there a known fix for this?

Debian unstable — LXDE and LXQt
