Ever since a few months ago, I’ve had this issue where the two functions: saving a file and using the scale tool take exceedingly long amount of times to complete, and often result in the error message «Fatal Error: Unhandled Exception» which then causes the app to become unusable and unresponsive (so it must be manually turned off through the task manager) and also causes me to lose all my work since my last save.
Before the issue my file saving and scaling was quick, maybe a second maximum, and I used to save my work almost compulsively, every few strokes or changes while working, but now it takes between 30 seconds to a minute (even for the smallest changes!)
I don’t know when or what exactly caused this issue (I have a feeling it might’ve been a certain application update or Windows update but I’m not sure), this just started happening one day out of the blue and for the past few months I’ve been dealing with this bug.
Has anyone here ever dealt with this problem before and/or knows how to fix it?
I’ve searched the internet for this problem, but this seems to be a pretty rare issue. Most instances of this error I’ve found online happen upon startup, and not during the times I receive the message.
I also use Windows 10 64-bit, always updated to the latest version, and I use Gimp 2.10.14 (not sure if that’s the latest version).

Here are some examples of my usual file size
- [5400×4000] (18 layers, usually 5 visible at a time) — About 70% of the time I get a crash (size of edit doesn’t matter, I could change one pixel and boom, crash)
- [4000×5671] (hundreds of layers, mostly text (up to 100 text layers visible at a time), excluding text layers it’s probably 20 or so layers, and five of them are visible at a time)
- [3840×2630] (hundreds of layers, mostly text (up to 50 text layers visible at a time), excluding text layers it’s probably 20 or so layers, and five of them are visible at a time) — Maybe 5% of the time I experience a crash
- [2720×1890] (32 layers, usually 5 visible at a time) — 100% crash rate for a few months now
What’s weird though is that this issue started one day very abruptly, I used to be able to use these files on this computer (6 GB RAM) without facing a crash at all, with quick save speeds (less than five seconds). Then one day, I got this error, and then had it again and again and again.
On smaller files than this one, I still have trouble saving, but I usually don’t have to worry about facing a crash.
RAM of image ranges between 900 MB and 2 GB. This has remained constant since before I worried about these crashes.
Tile Cache is set to 3 Gigabytes.
I’ve never tried CL before
How much RAM? Without using Gimp, 50 — 60%, When using Gimp, between 60% — 70% out of 6 GB, upon saving, it skyrockets up to 90% — 95% and stays there for about a minute as the computer tries to save it.

Ran a good RAM test lately? such a memory-intensive app could be a bit more sensitive to RAM problems than the regular crop.

What disk is your page file on? How much disk space is free on that disk?
It sounds like something is causing thrashing to me. Does your drive light up when you start the save and stay lit until it is done, with little flicker? That can be from numerous things, but low disk space is a common one. Bad disk areas can cause it as well, if the spot that went bad is in the page file. To check this you can use many tools but I like Defraggler from CCleaner. Just go to advanced in the Defraggler IDE and elect «Check disk for errors». It can also speed things up slightly by making larger files read in a logical manner instead of being scattered randomly on the drive.

I actually keep most of my files on a USB with 64 GB storage (6 GB is free). The computer I use, though, has a 1 TB Hard Disk Drive with 400 GB free.
Upon saving or uploading files, the USB stick lights up and blinks continuously until it is finished, but this has been a feature of the USB ever since I first got it.

I haven’t run a RAM test ever since getting the computer about five years ago. Can you tell me some good places I can take one?

Please check the file name of the installer you used — if it is not gimp-2.10.0-setup-2.exe, then you got an older version and should get the current download from https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
Gimp error
Hello,
Can someone help me, I have install GIMP 2.10 for windows x64 but when I want to launch it, I have an error «fatal error :unhandled exception» (see attached), the configuration of my surface pro is in the attachments.
Thank you very much, I have reinstall it 3 times but nothing
I use GIMP on a Windows PC and I had the same problem. I finally discovered that it was an incompatible plug-in. I had installed Gap for gimp in my previous version. I believe that the plug-in is not compatible with the new processing engine. (just a guess) A simple uninstall through the control panel did not work. When I reinstalled GIMP, it still had the same error. When Windows uninstalls GIMP it leaves behind some files and folders that contain your plug-ins, themes, etc. I had to go and delete all of those folders and then reinstall GIMP for it to work. Here are the folders that you should delete.
C:Program FilesGIMP 2 C:Users\AppDataLocalGIMP
The AppData folder is hidden so you may need to turn on the show hidden files and folders option in the folder options link in the control panel to see it.
This will also delete all of your themes and brushes. If you have any custom themes or brushes, you should back them up before you delete the folders. They can be found: C:Program FilesGIMP 2sharegimp2.0themes and C:Program FilesGIMP 2sharegimp2.0brushes
After I deleted all of those files and installed GIMP again, everything worked just fine.

Fatal error: unhandled exception
Since upgrading from 2.8 to 2.10 I’m getting occasional crashes on GIMP startup with the message: «fatal error: unhandled exception» (see screenshot).
It happens on maybe 1 in 8 GIMP launches and when it does it then happens maybe 2 or 3 times in a row but then after that it launches OK until the next time.
I’ve read some reports of incompatible plugins from older versions causing crashes so I uninstalled and manually deleted any GIMP-related folders/themes/plugins and did a completely clean install but it still happens from time to time.
Any suggestions please?

Fatal error: unhandled exception
I am getting the same error message since the new year.
GIMP was working fine with the latest release, but when it is loading now I just see the blocks instead of text and then the program hangs for a while before displaying the fatal error message.

Gimp fatal error unhandled exception

- What is the size of the images (width × height) in pixels, and the number of layers?
- What is the RAM size of the image (at the bottom of the image display)
- What is the tile cache size set to ( Edit>Preferences>System resources>Resource consumption )
- Is OpenCL enabled ( Edit>Preferences>System resources>Hardware acceleration )
- How much RAM is reported by Windows?

Note: bug reporters are expected to have verified the bug still exists either in the last stable version of GIMP or on updated development code (master branch).
Operating System: Windows 10, Ver. 10.0.18362.1 10.0.18362.1 (WinBuild.160101.0800) C:WindowsSystem32gdi32.dll
Package: latest stable windows Installer from gimp.org
Description of the bug
I upgraded from GIMP 2.10.10 and got the fatal error, nothing but the error. Tried full uninstall. Tried run as admin, reboots, etc, all the same error alert. I do not have LibreOffice installed or ever had it. I have read over the issue submissions that I searched and that came up as similar, nothing gave me a solution, except to maybe go back to the version 2.10.10.
Reproduction
Is the bug reproducible? Always
- Clean install of 2.10.12
- does not start. Alert «fatal error: unhandled exception» …

Revive a broken(?) script

Hello everyone,
A long time ago I posted on this forum to find help to create a script that can automatise some task that I use for work. One of you generously proposed to write it for me and for free (thanks again @Tin Tran)! It worked very well and save me literally hundreds hours of work. Recently it started to provoke crashes when running. I receive the error message «fatal error: unhandled exception».
I try the few thing I think could help. I make a clean reinstall of gimp 2.8, stay here. Try to pass to 2.10.12 put the plug-in, same problem. The crash doesn’t happen systematically, it happen every 1 to 10 times I run the script. I’m starting to be desperate and I don’t know how to trouble shooting the thing anymore.
Can maybe someone give me idea how to search for problem identification if not for solution. I will attach the script to the message if someone want to take a look and see if he can identify any anomaly.
Thanks you in advance and please forgive me for my poor English,
Morphéus

Sorry I tried running the script with 1 tif file and it works repeatedly.
To solve a problem, you’d have to identify what causes it and I am unable to make it error so I can’t fix which doesn’t seem to cause a problem.
If it happens 1 to 10 times then it’s really hard to find out what’s wrong without the ability to reproduce the problem.
the next best thing is to put a try catch around the loop so that if it fails running on one image it just reports failure on that tif and continue on with the rest of thet tif files. That way even if it fails you still have most of your result and examine the tif that failed and maybe rerun the process on that failed tif alone.

Thanks for the answer and good idea with the catch around loop.
But sadly Right know it crash each and every time on my side I cannot run it anymore. When launching it, the script manage to realise the first resize tif pict. but crash when producing the jpeg.
I don’t understand how it works on your side because I clean Install GIMP and both script on another computer, same crash and systematic ones.
EDIT: so no it’s not systemmatic, just really often.

I would need to your sample tif to try to reproduce it. When I tested i just exported a blank image as .tif.

Here is https://www.filehosting.org/file/detail … RWN_4a.tif.
If it only export a .tif and no .jpg it’s mean it didn’t work all the way, the output should be a .tif redimensioned and one .jpg with a scale indicator. When the script crash, it always manages to produce the .tif, it crash during the .jpeg creation or exportation. I also select a part of the initial image with the rectangle tool (I don’t know how it could affect it, but why not at this point).
EDIT: additional observations:
When I encounter the bug, if I relauch GIMP, he ask me if I want to retrive my work, If I do, I will find the picture crop, with the scale indicator draw, so the bug should occur at the export of the .jpeg.

Might be better with another example. That one works here (I think) linux Gimp 2.10.12 Some stats:
The image is 16 bit greyscale with Epson icc. — I kept that icc when opening the image.
Running the script: The backup tif is largely the same as the original unmodified. 16 bit greyscale with Epson icc. File size is slightly larger (maybe some extra metadata)
The jpeg with the ‘watermark’ is created. Nothing special greyscale 8 bit as you might expect.

Thanks you both of you for your help.I cannot understand why it work for both of you but crash so regularly on my side and on both of my computers? Maybe some hardware limitation (like a need of a ton of RAM or some shenanigan like that, could explain the randomisation of crash). I will try on a third computer and see what occur.

Try on a third computer, no luck either. The random crash continue. Any of you know if it’s possible to implemant at least a «loop around» so when it happen, I don’t have to restart Gimp and everything?

If Gimp 2.10 is constantly doing to you. I suggest you install GIMP 2.8 to just use this process.. I mean if it’s working there’s no need to use Gimp 2.10 unless you want the new features.

Начинаю рендерить не сложную сцену (комната 30 м2), мебели почти нет, а при рендере появляется такая ошибка и рендер останавливается, как это исправить? (пишет про какую то line 1378 — но такого объекта нет в сцене!!!)
error: UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: Memory allocation failure; 560000 bytes requested; 1316098751 bytes already in heap.
Last marker is at P:devLocalVSSvrayvraysrcvrayrenderer.cpp, line 1378: Preparing ray server

I have been asked to deploy GIMP to the computer science rooms for the students to use during lessons
I have created a package that installs fine over the network
When I open it, it works fine for an admin user but a «normal» student and staff accounts get error messages.
The error is «C:Program FilesGIMP 2bingimp-2.10.exe» fatal error: unhandled exception
If they click OK on the error, GIMP closes. I’m assuming it’s a file permission issue but I don’t know how to resolve it.
Event viewer seems to be pointing to «script-fu.exe» and «KERNELBASE.dll».
Has anyone got any tips? or ideas? on how to resolve it?

Hmm not sure really, we deploy it here to all machines from PDQ deploy and it works fine.
This is the process steps
%SYSTEMROOT%System32taskkill.exe /f /fi «IMAGENAME eq gimp-*»
gimp-2.10.24-setup-1.exe /SP- /VERYSILENT /ALLUSERS /NORESTART /LOG=.output.logLast edited 13th September 2021 at 03:14 PM.

How did you package it?
Annoyingly the Glimpse renamed GIMP project is now on hiatus, they had an MSI installer
I use https://community.chocolatey.org/packages/gimp

I created a batch file. The command is: «gimp-2.10.24-setup-3.exe» /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /NORESTART /SP- /ALLUSERS
I have tried manually installing gimp on a computer and the users get the same error so I don’t think it’s to do with the network install.
It must be a user access thing. I don’t know if it’s trying to write to somewhere locally on the C drive, not being able to and crashing.
I have just discovered that if I login as an admin and open GIMP, then switch user on the computer and login with a student account I can then open GIMP fine. It’s as if the admin user has opened a file or started a process which the student user doesn’t have access to but by starting the process/opened the file as an admin it works fine
I need to narrow down what GIMP is doing when it starts up
