Radeon HD 7970 + glxinfo: «Error: unable to open display»
#1
Post
by TheRealBecks » 2015-02-15 14:41
Hello,
after an dist-upgrade a few months ago my PC has no working KDE desktop anymore. Before that update everything was fine. When testing «glxinfo» or «sudo glxinfo» I get following error:
So there is no way to work anymore with the desktop
Here are additional information:

Seems like the update messed up Xorg configuration?
1. If you are running the open source radeon drivers, then
from the command prompt, do this as root:
See if the radeon module is loaded. Again as root:
If it’s empty, then it failed to load.
Check also if modesetting is disabled:
Code: Select all
cat /etc/default/grub | grep nomodeset
It should return nothing. If any line is returned with nomodeset,
then open the file as root with an editor
and remove the string: nomodeset
Reboot and it should work.
To check if you have «real 3D» and not just software llvm, do:
Code: Select all
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer string"
It should say anything other than llvm for it to be successful.
2. If you are using the proprietary Catalyst drivers, then you either have to reinstall
the fglrx packages:
https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary
or if you’ve installed them manually from AMD’s website, you have to run its uninstall
script and install it again. As root:
Code: Select all
sh /usr/share/ati/smd-uninstall.sh
reboot, then:
Code: Select all
sudo sh ati-driver-installer-YOUR-VERSION.run

Reboot, but glxinfo is still not possible

Nope, open-source «radeon».
Any other idea what we could check? Thanks a lot!

Ok, two thinks:
First of all I didn’t know, that «glxinfo» only works when sitting in front of the monitor — so ssh + glxinfo is not possible! So, yeah, glxinfo IS working and now I get an output…! But before I logged me in, I did the following…:
I updatet my PC (via ssh), rebootet, logged me in and startet the terminal. What I can say is… it’s working… a few days ago my graphics still didn’t working and my desktop lagged horribly. But today was an update for «xserver-xorg-core» and now it’s working! I can’t believe it! O.O Since decembre my graphics were broken and now it got fixed! Why did I invest hours of bugtracking with no result?!
Okay, really, thank you for your help!

Intel HD graphics problem. glxinfo/xbmc -> Unable to open display
Hi,
First time intstalling Arch Linux for me, and I can’t seem to get something working, not sure what exactly is wrong but here are the symptoms :
-
When I run «startx», I get a GUI with 3 terminal windows and a clock in the top right corner, which I assume is the normal behaviour…
-
When I run «glxinfo», I get the output:
Error: unable to open display -
I initially encountered a problem when I tried to run xbmc. I got the following error:
Error: unable to open display
XBMC needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rengering.
Install appropriate graphics driver.
Here are the steps I have followed to get to where I am:
-
Install the X Windows System
i. Install stuff:
pacman -Sy xf86-video-driver
pacman -Sy lib32-intel-dri
pacman -Sy libva-driver-intel
pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm
ii. Setup stuff:
— Remove any references to vga or nomodeset from the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
— Add the i915 module to the MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
MODULES=»i915″
— Regenerate the initramfs:
sudo mkinitcpio -p linux
— Reboot -
Install XBMC
— Install stuff:
pacman -Sy xbmc
I’m running on an intel celeron G530, which has built in intel HD graphics. I do not have a discrete video card installed. I’m booting off a SSD, if that makes any difference.
I’m assuming you guys will need the output of some scripts and/or the contents of some setup files but I wouldn’t know what to give you so I’ll wait until you ask!
Thanks for any help guys!
Update :
So, I followed the steps posted here : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1030435
Everything seems to work, the KMS test responds with «1»
There are no more errors in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file :
http://codepad.org/USjbDkg5
However, glxinfo and xbmc still respond with the same errors, whether I run them as user or as root…
Could this be because I’m running off the VGA port on my motherboard and not the DVI or HDMI ports ?

running «groups kevin» output a list which include «video», so yes.

I transfered this over to the «Multimedia and Games» forum, I think it’s more appropriate over there.

Re: Intel HD graphics problem. glxinfo/xbmc -> Unable to open display
Are you using 32 or 64 bit? I thought packages starting «lib32-» were for multilib stuff but maybe I’m wrong.
Try replacing xf86-video-driver with xf86-video-intel.
Try replacing lib32-intel-dri with intel-dri.

So why:
?
Just use intel-dri.
If you are using 32 bit, lib32-intel-dri is the wrong package. You won’t want this package in that case but you will want intel-dri.
If you are using 64 bit, you may or may not want lib32-intel-dri but you will definitely want intel-dri.
So either way, you want intel-dri. pacman will use the correct intel-dri for your architecture. The lib32- packages are just if you want to run 32 bit applications on a 64 bit system e.g. acroread which isn’t available for 64 bit Linux. You might want those later, but get rid of them for now until you’ve got the basics working.
I can’t even find a package called xf86-video-driver. Are you sure this is what you installed? In any case, try xf86-video-intel instead and make sure that no other video drivers are installed. (If I remember correctly, the wiki page on intel says these drivers don’t always play well with others.)
will tell you if you are running 64 bit or not for sure but for installing the intel stuff, you don’t actually need to know as pacman will sort everything out. (Except, as I say, later if you want to run 32 bit apps on a 64 bit system — then you need to tell it you want lib32-whatever.)

I’m having difficulties getting XBMC Live to work on an old laptop. All the places I’ve searched uses glxinfo to check up on the hardware. When I run glxinfo all I get is:
Error: unable to open display
I’ve tried setting the DISPLAY-variable manually without luck. The command xhost +localhost also fails with the same error message.
What should I do to get glxinfo to work?

I’ve installed xbmc on the HDD of a DELL Latitude D600 (x86 with an ATI RV250 (Radeon Mobility 9000)) using the «XBMC Live 8.10»-distibution CD. When I try to diagnose why I’m having problems getting X to work I SSH to the machine and run the command glxinfo which fails.
I would expect glxinfo to work regardless of how the machine is set up. As this is not the case what should be set up for this command to work?
(I hope I provided enough information this time )

First of all, you’d better use a newer version, RC1 or Gold (out in a few hours).
Start Live in «SAFE MODE — AMD/ATI», log on and type «startx».
You will land to a standard X desktop with fluxbox as WM.
From there you will be able to perform all the tests you need — and launch xbmc as well.

Which graphics type are you trying to start on the D600? ATI will not work. The binary ATI video driver won’t work with the graphics chipset on the D600, the Mobility 9000, as it’s considered a legacy chipset by ATI and is not supported under thier binary/proprietary driver. At best you can launch it with the Intel drivers. It’ll work, but it’s very slow.

I’ve now installed Babylon and I’m now able to see output from GLXInfo. Now I just have to figure out how to setup X correctly for XBMC…

I’m trying to get the Open Source Drivers to work as ATIs Radeon RV250 Mobility 9000 card is unsupported in the Binary ATI Drivers.
I’m confident that the Open Source Drivers should work as I’ve seen several post regarding people getting Compiz to work on Ubuntu on a Dell Latitude D600. I just haven’t had any luck yet…
(At one point I did get XBMC to work using the VESA drivers. Boy was that SLOW. Probably 0.1 FPS… )

Hello!
Optimus-manager stopped working for me after a system update recently.
The output during tty mode is…
Error reading current mode : Cannot run glxinfo : Failed to execute 'glxinfo' : Error: unable to open display
There is more output too it but piping didn’t catch it.
I’ll try to update this asap with that info.
System info
OS — Arch Linux
Kernel — 4.19.98-1-lts
WM — Openbox
DM- Lightdm
Laptop — Clevo N855HJ
Version — Optimus Manager (Client) version 1.2.2
Logs
OMboot_setup.txt
OMgpu_setup.txt
OMprime_setup.txt
Here’s a photo of the extra info that pipe didn’t catch.
Will convert into text soon.
Yeah that Python crash has been fixed already (b4d07c7), the fix just hasn’t made its way into a release yet.
Use optimus-manager-git for now.
The…
Error reading current mode : Cannot run glxinfo : Failed to execute 'glxinfo' : Error: unable to open display
…is still persisting after changing to optimus-manager-git.
But there is no python crashing anymore.
I assume you entered that command in a tty session (the screenshot you posted looks like if you did).
Since glxinfo
needs an X display, the error would be the supposed behavior if that’s the case.
If so, could you pls try again in a terminal emulator inside a graphical session ?

optimus-manager --status |& <other_command>
does pipe both stdout and stderr of the first command into the second one, btw 😉
@Kr1ss-XD
You’re correct.
glxinfo is running correctly now.
I’m confused on where this leaves me though.
I made another issue with #204
In which I mention that I do make it to a lightdm login screen.
That means there is an X display getting opened?
It’s when I try and login and the screen tries to create an openbox-session that it blacks out and sends me back to the lightdm login screen.
This seems to be another problem. I’m afraid I can’t help you with that, since I’m not experienced with display managers nor with OpenBox, sorry.
