Hello,
I’m from the rough south of Italy. I’m new in the world of RPi, I’ve just bought a nice Pi 2 B some days ago and started using it for some lateral applications.
I’ve got Raspbian Jessie w/ NOOBS from RPI official website, actual version is 1.4.2
I’m not a veteran in programming, so GUI approach is enough for me.
The most important feature I need is giving me some trouble here…
I’m trying to run guvcview, cause I need a precise task with a dedicated webcam I bought just for this.
The camera is an Omnivision OV5640 5MP USB, very similar to the official camera module. It’s recognized by the kernel and works very good with Camorama, luvcview, not so good with motioneye… but I need very good picture, shot and video capture, extended camera settings and fullscreen feature so I opted for guvcview.
If I try to launch it without camera, a window says «Guvcview error no video device found»
Then, if I go with the camera, response from LX Terminal is:
GUVCVIEW: couldn’t open /home/pi/.config/guvcview2/video0 for read: File o directory non esistente

Until now I ran rpi-update, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, software-properties-common, repository for guvcview 2.0.1, v4l-utils, and autoconf, gettext, libtool, libjpeg8-dev.
Consider that I don’t know nothing about programming languages, just a tiny bit Arduino, no more and I do not think I’ll go beyond for now
and that makes no sense to use other cameras than this one for the project I need… furthermore, it works with other software…
Can you help me please?
Kind greetings

Cheese/Guvcview cannot find video device
Evening:
What must be done to have Linux recognise the webcam in a HP 2000-210. Tried multiple apps and all report they cannot find devise. The built-n cam does work, so it a problem within the software/apps. I’d think this would be posted somewhere, but googled and could not find answer.
Thanx:
Rick

After I have plugged in my web cam I have to restart the machine for it to find the new device. I also have a tv tuner card installed which is why I have to do that.
Hope that helps easy to try

Hey lgt791:
No, sorry to say that didn’t help. Oh, and BTW, it’s a built-in webcam. I uninstalled/re-installed Cheese and cam came on for a second, then went black and said «no device found», which is highly inaccurate since it came on for about a second? There has to be something in the plug-ins or dependency packages that isn’t configured, but I don’t know what (that just my guess)). But, then, why did it come ‘on» for just a second, IF as it stated, «no device found»? Just another of the games Linux/Ubuntu plays.
Thank You: [HP2000-210 LM17]

How do I go about checking «hardware acceleration»? How do I enable it (if it’s off)? Does LinuxMint 17 require a specific ‘driver» for the built-in videocam?

Have you tried running cheese or guvcview from the terminal ? Then looking at what errors it shows ?
Try that then post back here maybe someone would have some ideas.

REPLY to DrHu:
Thanx for replying. Hmmm…. HP «not ready to help out?» That’s a possiblity, however, I should state the internal webcam worked w/ Ubuntu 12.04. And, it does turn on, albeit just for a few seconds, before going black and saying it can’t find device (which is impossible since it DOES come on for a few secs.) I’ll certainly give the ‘links» a look and see if/what may help. I tried to use a few other «webcam apps» as well, but they did the same…came on and went right back off then «cannot find devise». This is crazy! So, I’ll keep plugin’ away at it and see what I/we can come up with to ‘fix» it.

Ok, I don’t see much for HP and Ubuntu, except for HP 1000 (seems to have been listed), and a later model (not yours) that offered Suse Linux
—laptop compatibility site shows HP 2000-210, but various items not tested (including webcam), template site for users to respond with their findings
Linux = HP site(s)
http://downloads.linux.hp.com/
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/business-servi … FgT4Gfwtok
—none of this will be any real help, since it is more desktop or high end computers that HP is interested in servicing via Linux OS support (RedHat etc..)
- Try this site, see if anything clicks for you, I don’t know your specific model number/version..
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/sear … c=en&lc=en
—I notice that even if I start with Linux, I end up with windows OS data on this site..
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/pfin … ence=0#N64
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu … =ca&dlc=en
- —so they don’t have much except for Suse or RedHat, and for higher end systems..
So, some looking at the system, then
—in a terminal
- dmesg
—check results of device start/stop messages.
—run you application see it blank and stop, then what is the dmesg display showing (maybe some error condition)
But based on what I can locate, I don’t hold out much hope for a newer Linux distribution working with that device (the built-in webcam)
—if the computer has come with the windows OS, I would run that OS and see if all the devices work; since I also found some issues with windows OS and that particular machine.
http://roomforcreativity.wordpress.com/ … -210-1000/
- Unless I could also run the windows OS to run the webcam
—I would probably opt for an external one, lots of cheap ones available, even though it would no lounger be integrated into the case, that at least would work with Linux..
—and if that is the only significant problem, I would leave it at that, and just run my regular apps on the computer (netbook) and go on with my business
- Maybe someone else can offer some additional results
—I am out of choices..
http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/mak … &level=Any
—At some time, it would install (Ubuntu 12), but it is not supported platform within Ubuntu at this time.

Hey DrHu:
I’ll re-interate form my previous post. THE CAM DOES COME ON FOR A SECOND OR 2, THEN GOES BLACK AND READS: CANNOT FIND DEVISE. OK, so WE know it can find the ‘devise», WE know the cam does work, WE do know the cam worked with 12.04, What we don’t know is why it won’t stay on working more than a few seconds with LM17 and I’m positive the problem lies within LM17 or the apps and not within the laptop.. Don’t know if I can find the ‘exact» webcam model HP used, but I’ll try to once again. I’ve been going around the «web» trying to find an answer to this; I can find plenty of posts descibing the problem, but have yet to find one that addresses the answer, which is starting to get a bit annoying. So, perhaps I should be asking a LINUX tech? Is there such a site that I could querrie a LINUX tech? (I don’t know) Really, I don’t think it’s a major problem, but finding the «fix» is turning out to be. I’ll be posting the readout of dmesg shortly, perhaps it will guide us.
Thanx:
Rick

Just open a terminal as yourself not root and type in cheese press enter
You can do the same for guvcview .
If errors post them maybe someone can figure them out.

Hello EVERYONE:
I found this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/338965/h … -in-raring Read through it and NOW am asking for advise. This seems like a lot of «configuring». Would/should this work in LM17? Does this look right and should it work properly? Want to be sure BEFORE I install/enable (better safe than sorry) Why should there be so much «configuring»…why doesn’t ‘cheese» work out-of-the-box? Should this be sent as a bug report?
Thanks:
Rick

Hey:
Could someone translate and advise me on what must be done to get this darn O.S. working properly?
This file contains the list of md5 checksums of all files on this medium.
You can verify them automatically with the ‘integrity-check’ boot parameter,
or, manually with: ‘md5sum -c MD5SUMS’.

This has gone on far too long. I’m really mad because it(LM17) crashed and I lost all the files I’d been rebuilding since/when Ub 12.04 crashed. I implore anyone who can translate this md5sum to explain what is wrong?(if anything) and what must be done to have a properly operating O.S.? HP2000-210 LinuxMint17 64 bit
Thank You:
Rick

Hi, all. I’m new here. Just wanted to say- If you have a USB webcam you chould try changing the path on it. I was having a devil of a time getting my Logitech HD webcam working until I noticed in Camera Monitor the device path read, «dev/video». I changed that to «dev/usb/video», et voila! The camera works just fine. Simple fix, worked for me.

Hey All:
Have «wiped and re-installed» LM17. Well, only a few days on re-install and ‘CHEESE» opens, runs for about 10-15 secs, goes to black screen =»There was an error playing video from webcam». So, we know that it can ‘find» the webcam; we know it did «video» a couple of times,; when it did «open/run» it did so for about 10-15 secs. So, what must I do now? Thanx:

Hey:
STILL cannot get VLC/Cheese/Guvcview to operate built-in HP VGA webcam. Have been through many, many, forums and there does not seem to be a clear answer for fixing this problem. Surely someone must know what must be done to get any of these programs to «reconize» the HP webcam. I hope you’ll provivde the answer so it can be passed along to many others experiencing the same difficulties. I used Cheese in same laptop when I had 12.04 installed???
[HP 2000-210~ HP VGA built-in webcam~ LM17 Cinnamon 64bit~ Intel Corp. Core Processor Integrated Graphic Controller}
When I run ‘cheese» from apps or terminal it reads «No Device Found».

Rick

Logitech.

shamsky

Linux.

В skype.

Webcam Not Detected
Hello all,
I have searched for a solved thread on this and could not find one. The integrated webcam on my Dell laptop does not work, this is what I get:

when I plug a USB webcam, I get this:

Re: Webcam Not Detected
How much is a solution worth to you? $40 or more?
I ask because there are well supported USB webcams that are known to «just work» with Ubuntu and Linux in general. Guys in my LUG use Logitech C270 ($38) and Logitech C920 ($90-ish) webcams. Wish I had a non-Logitech suggestion, because supporting a company that took a long time to support Linux bothers me, but those are the ones we’ve found that are no hassle, plug in and work devices across a wide range of Linux systems.
I did find a post here from 2008-2011 about that model of webcam. People jumped through all sorts of hoops and didn’t get it working. I’ve had webcams die and never work again, but that was a very cheap IBM cam that was sitting in a window taking a photo outside every 30 seconds, 24/7/365 and posting to one of my websites. I think the sensor failed from sun exposure. I replaced it with a cheap webcam that never worked, then finally bought a C920 which only worked on Windows until around 2016. I think google’s success with chromebooks got Logitech to actively start supporting Linux. One day, out of frustration, I just plugged it in and it worked. Moved to a Linux system and it worked too. I was shocked.

Re: Webcam Not Detected
Hello, thank you for the sage response — I bought a Logitech for 44 bucks delivered by Thursday. Again, thank you…I am a civilian and not a tech person though I have been running Ubuntu since Hardy though I have not been in the forums for ages and ages. Did spend hours and hours on this webcam thing for the fun of it, but at some point it is not fun any more and time to bail out — 44 bucks is money well spent, Cheers..

Re: Webcam Not Detected
You already have a «logitech», so I really hope you got one of the models recommended. If it weren’t for this pandemic, these things are usually about $10-$15 cheaper. Ah — supply and demand. Be certain to disable the onboard webcam and perhaps the onboard microphone in the BIOS before connecting the new USB device. It will make your life easier.
With both the C920 and C270 models, our group doesn’t have any issues with using PC speakers — no headset or carefully input limited mic settings are usually needed.
The extra features that work in Windows, mainly logical zoom, work, but not in any interface I’ve seen in Linux. Save these commands:
Code:
$ v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 -c zoom_absolute=200 $ v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 -c brightness=100 $ v4l2-ctl --list-devices $ v4l2-ctl --list-formats
You may have use of them later.
The zoom of 200 is the max. Ranges from 50 — 200 seem to work.
For brightness, 100 is whatever the cam figures out. I’ve had it lower 1 value every minute on video chats where I really didn’t want to stay too long. By 50, I’m in a dark room as far as the chat shows.Because it is a subtle change, nobody notices it gradually change.
There are other settings that can be tweaked using the v4l2-ctl tool. The manpage lists them all. Perhaps there’s some hidden settings in some advanced video tools like OBS, but who has time for that when I can script what I want?

Re: Webcam Not Detected
So yes I bought a 270. The logitech in lsusb that I attempted to use is an old Express that came with a Gateway computer about 30 years ago (!) so I am not surprised that it didn’t work, but what the hell you never know.
Thanks for the code and the tips and the time, I am sure this will all work out. Cheers.
