  2. Could you run 2 instances of TWS, each one listening on a different API port…. One instance of TWS logged into the demo account, and the other instance logged into your real account that has subscriptions to the market data? Then just use one connection for the data, and the other connection for «everything else» ?

By the way, if you have a demo account linked to your other IB account (which has data subscriptions), I do believe that the demo account gets access to the market data, as long as you aren’t using it in another instance of TWS.

  3. it works from my paper a/c . but when I try with the demo a/c that you can open with ib. its supposed to eb 1 week delayed data. but it does not work as they document it on their website.
    https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=1286
the only orders and data that works is forex data

  4. I’m not able to get the IB API working today. Last night, I could not even connect and today I can connect, but my requests are never returned. I’ll try again tomorrow.

  5. The API is working for me again as of this morning.

  6. I see from the screenshot that you are asking data for a stock (TSLA), but are asking for MIDPOINT pricing. I think that parameter is applicable to forex, not stock. Can you try again with «TRADES», instead of MIDPOINT?
Others already mentioned that you should ensure that you have subscriptions to the relevant market data.
Another warning is that sometimes data is not available during weekends (especially Saturdays).

When I try to get historical data for symbols IWM and GLD, I get the
following message:

Error 162, Historical Market Data Service error message: No market
data permissions for ARCA STK

When I make the request, I specify SMART as the exchange.

Other symbols such as SPY, QQQQ work fine.

Has anyone had this problem???

thanks,

Dwight

Same here, got it on IWM a couple of weeks ago, and I never managed to
overcome it (well, I used the Yahoo historical quote downloader). Note
that NyseArca is not Nyse, it’s a «different exchange». Both ETFs are
on NyseArca. It seems that for some reasons unknown to me that IB does
not keep the data or does not have access to it.
Would it work if you suscribe to market data «ArcaBook for Equities»???

«Introducing NYSE Arca, a fully electronic stock exchange that
provides an open and fair market for emerging companies to expand.
After all, we believe that every company deserves a chance to grow on
a more ambitious scale. NYSE Arca’s broader eligibility requirements
allow smaller companies that meet our listings standards to join
us–and ultimately gain visibility opportunities and access that have
never been available to them before.»

Can you get realtime quotes on GLD and IWM through TWS? When I do it
through TWS, I get a contract selection window. SMART is the first (and
works for me when I select it), but ARCA is the second. I get a quote
(it’s closed now, so I just see Last and Change). If I try and open a
realtime chart, I get the same error you get in the menu bar. I never
tried to pull historical for GLD before now, but I guess I’m not
subscribed to the ARCA feed. Maybe check your account settings on the
website?

(continuation) I just checked my account (Trading Access/Market Data
Subscriptions) and I’m not subscribed to ArcaBook ($10/mo). So this error
is correct for me.

Yes I have had the same problem, and it is because Arca went funny.
It is easy to get around though. The problem that you have is that
you are using SMART as a routing for historical requests.

What you need to do is switch from SMART to say ISLAND (that is what
I use) and then you get the historical data without any problems.
Though, don’t do this for ordering because then you will get whacked
with additional charges.

Christian

yes, sometimes. try using ISLAND instead of SMART.

I’ve also had this problem and using ISLAND as the exchange and primary exchnage does work, but don’t use it on all of your historical requests universally as SMART and ISLAND return different open/high/low/close values for the same timeframes

Hi,

It’s my first time to perform IB Paper Trading and upon login to IB I get the following console warnings:

  • Brokerage Warning: Historical Market Data Service error message:No market data permissions for ISLAND STK. Origin: GetHistory: TLT (STK TLT USD Smart)
  • Brokerage Warning: Historical Market Data Service error message:No market data permissions for AMEX STK. Origin: GetHistory: SPY (STK SPY USD Smart)

My algorithm has a SetWarmup which I guess is the what is causing IB to generate the said warnings.  I did not get these with QuantConnect’s paper trading.

Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks,

Jon

Hi Jon,

To receive historical data from the IB API, you’ll need to first have live data permissions in Trader Workstation (TWS).

If you are using a trial account, the only live data available is for Forex, bonds and some Cfds. However, if you have a live account, you’ll need to share data permissions from the live account to the paper account so that it can also access API live and historical data for stocks.

Also keep in mind that IB sends live data to only one of your accounts. That means live data will be available in either your live or paper account, but not live and paper.

Best
Rahul

Rahul, I have a live account with IB. Are you able to give instructions on how to share data permissions between the live account and the paper. I am getting the same error as above when trying to paper trade with IB.
